Capital Grants June 2026

Capital Grants offer three-year agreements for standalone capital items to achieve specific environmental benefits that can also be used to support and complement Sustainable Farming Incentive, existing Countryside Stewardship Mid-Tier, Higher Tier, and Wildlife Offers, and Environmental Stewardship (ES) Higher Level Stewardship. You do not have to be in an Agri- environment scheme to apply.

What is available?

There are eighty capital items available within six groups: air quality, assessments, boundaries/trees/orchards (including the former hedgerows and boundaries grant items), improvements, water quality and natural flood management. There is a funding limit for four of the item groups.

There is no funding limit for items in the Assessment or Improvement groups.

• Air Quality: £25,000 maximum.

• Boundaries, Trees, and Orchards: £35,000 maximum.

• Natural flood management £25,000 maximum.

• Water Quality: £25,000 maximum.

You should prepare the evidence and supporting documentation required before applying. You must send all the evidence needed to support your application within 10 working days of submitting it.

Catchment Sensitive Farming Officer Support

For capital items that help improve water and air quality, support from a Catchment Sensitive Farming (CSF) adviser may be required. If the CSF support is not obtained, these items will be removed from the agreement. Applicants will need to show:

• how pollutants are reaching a watercourse or underground aquifer.

• where ammonia emissions are coming from.

• how the proposed activity will prevent air or water pollution and how it helps to reduce flood risk while also including a suitable range of capital items.

CSF will focus support and approval at farms where the largest improvements in water and air quality and reduction in flood risk are likely to be achieved. The effects of a water pollutant, flood risk or ammonia on a sensitive protected site will be considered as part of this.

For some capital items, supplementary grants can be used. Some capital items may also need additional consent and payments will not be made without the appropriate consent.

What will the grant not cover?

The capital grant cannot be used for the following:

• any capital works done (or materials purchased) before an agreement starts.

• planning application fees or other transactional fees.

• agent fees or other advisory fees.

• meeting legal requirements, including planning conditions, tenancy agreements and environmental regulations

• any works on a Scheduled Monument (including any works on the boundary of these sites).

• any works on common land, parcels or shared grazing rights.

• any works undertaken as part of another grant or obligation.

• in-kind contributions (this means the value of donated work or services) or gifted materials where you have not incurred a cost for them.

How to apply?

Capital grant applications are done online by the Rural Payments Service, although any supporting maps and any documents must be sent by e-mail or post to the Rural Payments Agency. Applications are open all year round. Each application can include items from all six groups up to the relevant limit. Only one application per Single Business Identifier (SBI) can be made per calendar year. You cannot include land parcels that already have capital grants in an existing Higher Tier, Mid-Tier or Capital Grant agreement that are incomplete or have not received their final payment. The round of the scheme will close to applications when the available funding is committed. Funding is not guaranteed even if an application has been submitted and is eligible.

The Rural Payments Agency will check all applicants against an insolvency register. If your application is not financially viable, an agreement may not be offered. For applications including capital expenditure of more than £50,000 in total, a statement from a registered accountant must be submitted from a registered accountant to support the application.
