I went for it and after a couple tries I had a pretty nice line.

The applicator brush is beautiful and smooth. You can easily do a clean thin line or a more creative and trendy shape. I would recommend this product but my only critic would be for all day wear you may need to apply a primer and be sure to let it dry before applying a shadow to prevent smudges and really allow it to set.

LET’S TALK ABOUT COUNSELLING If the idea of counselling makes you uncomfortable, you’re not alone. Most of my clients have said it took them a really long time to gather the courage to contact me. They’ve also said they wish they’d done it way sooner!

If you’ve never seen a counsellor before, you might share some familiar concerns: • I’m not crazy, and I’m not weak. Isn’t that who counselling is for?

• I’m worried I won’t like my counsellor.

• My loved one thinks I’m going to say bad things about them.

• I live in a small community, and I’m concerned about my privacy.

• I can’t afford to pay for counselling.

• I don’t know what to expect.

There isn’t a person on earth who knows how to do everything flawlessly. That includes navigating emotional landscapes, and negotiating the complexities of human relationships. It’s a mark of intelligence, strength, wisdom and maturity to recognize that you can benefit from another’s expertise, and to consult with them accordingly.

It’s extremely important that you do like your counsellor. You need to feel comfortable with them, and be confident that what they offer will be useful. If you don’t find the right match on the first try, don’t be afraid to keep looking. A good counsellor will encourage you to find the right counsellor for you, and may even recommend a colleague!

Your friends and family can rest easy. A good counsellor will keep the focus of every session on you – your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs; your behaviours, discoveries, and solutions. You’ll be so enthusiastically engaged in learning about yourself, you won’t even remember to focus on anyone else!

Your privacy is fully protected. Professional counsellors are bound to a code of ethics that includes uncompromising confidentiality. Your counsellor can’t tell anyone else about your sessions, or even that you’re seeing them. Most counsellors also have a protocol for when they encounter clients in public. There are rare situations in which they may be required, by law, to share specific information. A good counsellor will review this with you, and clarify their individual policies. If they forget, make sure to ask!

Now more than ever, the expense of therapy doesn’t have to get in your way. Even if you don’t have an extended health plan that covers the cost, more and more counsellors are finding creative ways to make their work accessible. Be sure to ask about Special Rates, Sliding Scale, or Fair Fees.

Swingin' into Sp r i n g Salt Spring Singers present

at Fulford Hall May 11-13th, 7:30pm

The most swingin’ Salt Spring community event of the Spring hits Fulford Hall from May 11-13. That’s when Salt Spring Singers and the Swing Shift big band combine forces with special guest Bill Henderson for a concert that’s sure to have the audience’s feet tapping.

“It’s mostly swing and a lot of Canadian music,” said Swing Shift’s music director and conductor Derrick Milton. “The choir will have a blast working with Bill.”

Milton worked with the Singers music director Don Conley on the selection for the concert, which is called “Swingin’ Into Spring.” Both the Singers and Swing Shift will perform some tunes from their own music files. The repertoire includes jazz standards like Satin Doll, Lullaby of Broadway and I’ve Got a Gal from Kalamazoo.

The concert includes two Cole Porter tunes, Another Op’nin’, Another Show and Just One of Those Things, as well as other 30’s and 40’s pieces and, of course, Henderson’s original compositions.

“We sang pop and jazz as part of our Broadway show a couple of years ago,” said Conley. “At that time the choir found the hardest thing was the rhythm but we pulled through. The key is getting everyone on the same page.” The choir and band got together recently to work on the swing rhythms that are needed to pull off the songs and Milton was delighted with the outcome.

Salt Springer, Mike Reveley, has written the choral arrangements of Henderson’s songs Take Back This Land and When I Sing. The concert features an arrangement by trombonist Keith Ollerenshaw of Oscar Peterson’s Hymn to Freedom. “The concert is a collaboration of many different music groups on the island,” added Conley. “It’s a real community effort.”

Swingin’ Into Spring takes place on May 11, 12 and 13 at 7:30pm at Fulford Hall.

Advance tickets are available at ArtSpring for $18 and are $20 at the door.

Children are $5. There will be a cash bar and just maybe a little dancing room.

Coaches needed The Salt Spring Island Special Olympics team is looking for coaches. They need volunteer coaches and helpers. Training is available to those people that are interested.

We need help with Bocce.

It runs Thursdays 3-5pm at Centennial Park. Start date yet to me determined.

The Salt Spring National Art Prize (SSNAP) The 2017 Parallel Art Show (PAS) will run during the SSNAP 2017 Exhibition.

It opens a week later on September 29th in the ArtSpring galleries, but closes the same day on October 22nd.

The intent is to feature Salt Spring Island's artists who submitted an entry to SSNAP, and to promote our community of artists to the growing number of SSNAP visitors.

It is hoped that the Parallel Art Show will become a regular feature of SSNAP. All Salt Spring artists who submit an entry to SSNAP will automatically have their names and images sent to curators Anthony Matthews and Matt Steffich for consideration for the Parallel Art Show. Unlike SSNAP, the Parallel Art Show is not a blind jury. It is an invitational show from amongst all SSI artists who entered SSNAP, and not a rejection show. Each SSI artist may be selected for both shows, either, or neither.

Once the curators have invited 30 to 50 artists to take part in PAS, they will work with each artist to select the pieces for the Parallel Art Show; these do not necessarily have to be the work submitted to SSNAP. The work chosen can be any size or medium, as decided by the curators and the artist to create an interesting art exhibition.

It is expected that the artists will need to sit the show unless enough volunteers are raised to sit both SSNAP and PAS. Artists will be responsible for delivering work and picking up unsold work.

In the future, the 1 to 3 curators should change every exhibition. The SSNAP Steering Committee with the Director should choose the curators.

Ruckle Heritage Farm Day Sunday, May 7 th 10am to 3pm

Ruckle Heritage Farm Day is a long standing educational family day for the community and visitors alike. Scheduled for Sunday, May 7,10:00 to 3:00, this event displays heritage farming and crafts side-by-side with nature in the beautiful Ruckle Farm’s setting. As few free family events remain, this day has proven in the past to bring out a large crowd to experience the beauty of this magnificent Park, made particularly unique & special with the ‘oldest operating family farm in BC’ tucked right into the middle. The day is geared toward children & educational farm related themes, free family fun! This event invites participation on every level, be it volunteering, attending, or taking part in the day’s many hands-on activities. Previous year’s fun filled day was thanks to over 100 volunteers giving of their time. With 2016 being cancelled, we hope to see everyone back again for another great day of fun at the farm.

Typically, the day and event will look something like this... Educational booths are located in the Heritage Farm area demonstrating such old crafts as spinning & weaving, basket making, quilting, and others. The Blacksmithing group is alongside the old forge building, and the ice cream & butter are being churned fresh at the Milk House with the Brown Swiss cow nearby. The 4-H Club provide their information & animals for display as well as sell baked goods. The Lions Club are making BBQ’d burgers & hotdogs while the kids are getting their faces painted or trying their hand at log sawing or nail hammering or the fish pond or the tug-of-war! Alongside the old heritage barn are farm product displays such as wool, hide items, and antique tool display. The Quilters are busy on a project while other finished works are displayed around the barn for viewing. Inside the barn the old farm equipment is on display while a film of ‘The Making of Ruckle Park’, featuring interviews with Lotus Ruckle & other local farmers is being shown. Later, the farm manager runs his border collies through their paces doing a sheep herding demonstration. Also on hand are the farm’s turkeys, bottle-fed lambs and the 4-H animals. The Fire department displays their old Firetruck and we have “then & now” tractors for all to see. Local acoustical music for added entertainment! Folks can walk all over the grounds enjoying a day at the farm - don’t forget to look inside the white heritage house for another peek into the past. Sunny skies on order!

Celebrating 15 Years of Planning Your Special Days If you live on Salt Spring it’s not likely you haven’t seen Tami Benoit Moulton around the island. Then again, if your “roll” is slow you may have missed her because this energetic dynamo is always on the move. This year, Tami celebrates the 15th anniversary of her successful wedding and events company Salt Spring Spirit of Events. With an island style theme, it only takes a few short minutes of chatting with Tami to know that this is the kind of girl you want in your corner for your events, big or small.

Catering to all varieties of events and specializing in weddings, Salt Spring Spirit of Events was founded after Moulton planned her best friend’s wedding in 2003 and fell passionately in love with event planning. She has a natural sense of style and such a strong attention to detail that this business was an easy transition for her.

Tami is a strong member of our Salt Spring community and donates her time to many island initiatives. You’ll also find around the soccer or ball field throughout the summer months. If you can’t find her simply listen for the loudest cheer. Her loyal and loving demeanor paired with a reliable and conscientious approach to event planning makes her a superstar and a core member of this island family.

Mouat’s Trading: A COMMITMENT to COMMUNITY for

110 Years!

This year marks the 110th anniversary of Mouat’s Trading Company. To say that Salt Spring was a different place back then would be somewhat of an understatement. Most of what is now Ganges didn’t exist, yet then, as now, Mouat’s was the hub of the downtown core.

Initially, Mouat’s was an, “everything under one roof” general store. Here was the place to purchase hardware, house supplies, petrol, lumber and even produce. Mouat’s actually purchased or traded for much of the produce that was produced by islands farmers. Although they no longer sell produce in their commercial hub, Mouat’s did construct the Thrifty’s building in 1992, which has become an integral component in downtown Ganges.

As a matter of fact, it’s hard to step into a building in the commercial core that doesn’t have a connection to Mouat’s in some way. Trading is also landlord to TJ Beans, North End Fitness, The Post Office, the CRD and The Tourist Bureau.

The most notable of the Mouat’s buildings is the main location which houses Home Hardware. The layout here is definitely a result of the many incarnations of this building over the years. This has ensured that the “general store” feel has not been lost. Also within the walls of the main building is the Housewares store, Bed and Bath Homeware, Pegasus Gallery, Fever Tree, Burger Bar 537 and, of course, the European hair salon. In addition to these, Mouat’s also owns the Harbour Building which has been home to the Old Salty Shop and Mouat’s Clothing Co for many years.

Trading has been overseen by the same family for over a century passing from Mouat’s to Toynbee’s, grandchildren of Jane Mouat, in 1969. The Mouat fingerprint in Ganges is a testament to the generations of this family who have remained dedicated to building the Community on Salt Spring.

When it comes to supporting the Island community, Mouat’s Trading intentionally remains quiet, instead of letting their countless community contributions speak for themselves. Not lost on this legendary business is the fact that Salt Springers have been instrumental in supporting shaping and building the entire Trading family throughout the decades. It is truly a symbiotic relationship.

On Saturday, May 27th, Mouat’s Trading is inviting community and tourists alike to share in celebrating their 110th anniversary. On that day, head down to the main hub and join in on a day of, camaraderie, community and cake. Bring the kids, so when they celebrate the 200th anniversary, they can remember when.

Dear Singing Amma, I would love to see more discussions around long distance grandparenting. What can we do to maintain true contact with our beloved ones that live further away?

Signed, Far-Away Grandma Dear Long-Distance-Grandparent-Love, Awe, I hear you, Grandma! It can be so hard to live far away from our little loved ones.

Let’s explore some “old school” and some technology-driven ways to create or maintain relationships with our littles who live miles - and sometimes oceans – away.

Letter writing is a fabulous connector across distances and, as your grandchildren grow, they will have these physical remembrances of you to carry with them throughout their lives. I was recently clearing out some old treasured papers and came across some letters from my amma; my eyes immediately teared up when I recognized her handwriting. It was almost as though I could hear her voice again as the memories flooded through. Precious.

Choose a regular time each month and hand-write letters to your grand-children.

Write about your daily life, as though they might be walking through a day with you; share your thoughts; share memories you have of your child who is now their parent.

When you go on trips pick up a postcard for each grandchild. Share a few words about your travels, even if it’s just to a neighbouring village. Again, these will be little windows into your life you are offering them a peek through.

Although I am a very strong advocate for “less screen, more green” – (as in getting kids away from hours of daily doses of technology, out from behind screens and into the great outdoors) – long-distance grand parenting is the one area I make the exception to this otherwise life and health affirming rule. Technology – even the lowly telephone! – can bridge miles and create smiles at both ends of the line.

Via technology so much is available now! Google “skype and similar options” and you’ll find a number of programs through which you can make free domestic and international calling and video-calling via the internet. Find a time and day of the week that works for both of you and create a regular Video-Visit!

Now, what will you talk about? Reading bedtime stories is a great thing to do this way. Read them the classics, favourite books from your childhood, and books you loved reading to your own children.

Teaching preschoolers finger-play songs is delightful. If they are in nursery school ask the parents to get a list of the songs the kids are learning and then, if you don’t know the songs, ask me! I will put some YouTube videos up to teach parents and grandparents for just this purpose!

Engage children in interesting conversations. Refrain from asking questions that will get a “yes,”“no” or “fine” response. Try: “Let’s share our three favourite and our three least favourite moments of the day. Ready? Acid Reflux and Stomach Health For those who’ve never experienced severe acid reflux, be grateful; the pain is so severe, that it is sometimes mistaken for a heart attack!

In a healthy stomach, there is a lot of acid production, and the pH is generally around 1.5. This acid provides protection vs many infections (including C. difficile), and is needed to digest/absorb protein, minerals, and certain vitamins. The walls of the stomach are uniquely designed to resist the acid levels, which is why we normally experience no discomfort. The lower esophageal sphincter (LES) closes off the stomach from the esophagus, keeping that acid in place, preventing reflux.

During acid reflux, the stomach acid (HCl) is not being appropriately contained within the stomach, and is moving up into the sensitive esophagus. How does that happen? Fundamentally, the LES is weak; ironically, this can be due to low stomach acid (aka hypochlorhydria); strong acid in the stomach is what strengthens the LES. Unfortunately, it is too commonly assumed (even by healthcare professionals) that the problem is one of excess acid. It might seem counter-intuitive, but it’s more likely to be low stomach acid levels causing your heartburn.

So how do we treat heartburn? This is an area where conventional medicine and naturopathic medicine will often disagree. A commonly prescribed pharmaceutical option is a proton-pump inhibitor (PPI), such as Nexium, Losec, or Prevacid. They are designed to prevent your body from producing stomach acid, and are an excellent medication for those who suffer from peptic ulcers, esophagitis, or H. pylori infections. It is not , however, a good medicine to be used long-term for acid reflux.(ie not more than 6 weeks, preferably much less) It is estimated that 40% of all people on PPI’s do not have an evidence-based reason for their long term use. Long term use of PPI’s is associated with magnesium deficiency, fractures, chronic kidney disease, pneumonia, and C. difficile infection. Note that stopping a PPI will usually result in some temporary rebound symptoms, which can be managed effectively by your healthcare team.

A better solution, for most cases, is to treat the cause of the problem; and strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter. This can be done directly, with D-limonene (derived from citrus fruit), or indirectly, by supporting the stomach’s natural acid production with bitter herbs or HCl betaine. In some cases, it can be useful also to avoid certain foods, and to maintain an upright posture after a major meal. It’s also crucial to consider stress; we all need to slow down at mealtimes, take the time to reflect on our meals, and permit the transition into ‘rest and digest’ mode. There is a reason why so many cultures have a long tradition of giving thanks at meals, and the cost to our health for our high-stress, rushed lifestyles cannot be over-stated. So please, slow down, and chew every mouthful. Amen.

Things Got Real I walked up Mount Erskine today. It hurt.

We took the steepest route. There is a fair amount of vertical!

I see those photos from you people on Facebook and Instagram of your happy faces with captions about your many trips up and the gorgeous sunny views and I imagine that is me! I imagine I jogged up and sit triumphantly at the top stretching my tight gluteus maximus, sipping my purified water I brought up in my Swell bottle.

Or maybe I do a little yoga up there on that gorgeous moss lawn to the side of the rock outcrop with that view... No one can downward dog like me. I attract a crowd of onlookers who clap at my mastery of the ancient practice...

But no. It is not that way at all. I started at the bottom splashing through mud paths in my new awesome blundies. I get 2 minutes in and I gotta pee. I find a tree off the path to squat behind and search with paranoid glances around as I noticed a few other hikers in the area. I drip on my tights and secretly wipe with my scarf.

Only I will notice or care.

We start the incline. At first I think, no worries. I can do this no problem! Thirty seconds later I am dying. My lungs burn and my calfs ache. I contemplate how it is only gravity that is making this so difficult. Damn you gravity!

The daughters are holding back for me. I fake a stop to take a photo just so I can catch my breath. “Go on girls! You need not wait!

I don’t want them to hear me panting! I feel like I am dying.

It starts to hail! It’s beautiful, but we all get soaked. I kinda love it because I am bloody hot by now from working it!

The last big steep climb and my lungs feel like they are going to burst through my ribcage. My throat aches. Snot is dripping from my nose as I gasp for air and my legs are fatigued and I feel like just lying down. “I’ll wait here! The forest is nice. Who cares about the view...”?

Suddenly, the hail stops. The birds start to chirp. I can see that the sun is starting to push its way through the rain clouds. I can tell that the sun is shining on the summit like a glorious golden prize!

It gives me the motivation to push to the finish! I pull myself up by the trunks of the small trees that line the way. The sun is my beacon and the bench at the top my ribbon!

I made it! It was worth it. It was not the vision I imagined it would be, but better because I really earned it!

I highly recommend this hike.

Issues starring the most awesome John Bateman

It doesn’t matter during which season you happen to be reading this article because it’s always flu season on Salt Spring. Do you know how I know it’s always flu season? Because if someone has the flu, they are more than happy to tell you all about it. My first question to people that stride up and announce that they are “carrying” is, “Why are you talking to me right now?” I think people have a theory that complaining about having the flu is the only known cure.

You always seem to make the mistake of asking someone how they are, seconds before you realize the person you are asking has the flu.

By then it’s too late and there are never any speeding cars to jump in front of. The next thing you know it’s twenty minutes later and you have a gruesomely detailed account of everything that has excited that person’s body in the last week.

Not only are people quite giving of this information, it can often turn into a phlegm laden competition in which one tries to outdo the other.

“Oh man, I have the flu.”

“Me too! I’ve had it for 4 weeks.”

“Four weeks? That’s a vacation. I’ve had this flu for 3 months. It’s called the ‘ninety day flu’.”

Stop! That conversation was just getting going, but I like you so I’ll cut them off there.

It’s well known that Salt Springers love putting labels on things.

“The ninety day flu” is a term I’ve heard many times on the island.

Strangely I have never heard of a thirty or sixty day flu, probably because those numbers aren’t as impressive as ninety. Here on Salt Spring we also have the Christmas Flu, the summer flu, the rainy flu and the Saturday Market flu. While some of these are legitimate ailments, most of them seem to come in the aftermath of too much drinking, too much hot-boxing, too much money spending or consuming too many pieces of pie. I actually believe that the “Pie Lady” flu is real, and that its yearly occurrence on the Monday after the Fall Fair is coincidental.

Although it often comes across as complaining, Islander’s actually embrace their flu. It brings people together. It boosts their immune systems. It gives everyone something to talk, or even brag about. Salt Springers are quite proud of their history. The petroglyph in Fulford, Grace Islet (for a while) and The Ganges Fire Hall are all pieces of history that Islanders stand behind (for a while). The flu on the island has just as much significance as anything else here. I have a theory that the flu that people get today, is the same one that was carried by our forefathers. It’s just been going around in circles for over a century.

Let’s have our flu designated the world’s first “heritage flu” by the Island’s Trust. Because without our heritage flu, we might actually find important things to talk about.

CITIZEN at LARGE

A ROUND PEG in a SQUARE UNIVERSE

The Break by Katherena Vermette This book comes with a Trigger Warning. I can’t say that I’ve read a lot of books that start off that way, but I know a lot that probably should. It can be an important part of the author’s process. Acknowledging the difficult subject matter and the painful memories that reading this novel might evoke for those who have suffered trauma. The author states in her warning, “This book is about recovering and healing from violence.”

I actually think it’s her inclusion of the aspects of recovery and healing that make this book so powerful. The Break is an important, award winning, first novel by an author who will make you feel connected to her words. Author Katherena Vermette gives us characters in a family that we can easily identify with even if at first glance we might think that we have nothing in common with them. They are our mothers, our sisters, our children, our friends.

They are us.

In the opening moments of this novel a young Metis mother, “I actually think it’s Stella, is being interviewed by her inclusion of the the police regarding an incident aspects of recovery and she has witnessed happening healing that make this outside, near her home. Each book so powerful.” subsequent chapter is from a different character’s perspective and gives us some background on the events that led up to the violent act she sees. Several distinct voices emerge, all girls and women, with the exception of the chapters focused on one of the investigating officers, Tommy Scott, a Metis policeman. Although he’s the only male character with his own point of view, there’s no disruption of our attention as we gently experience the subtle shift between storytellers. Gradually, there’s a very steady flow of insight that happens as the story unfurls. We learn a little more, and a little more with each short chapter and slowly we put together some pieces and although we’re hearing some terrible things, they are things that need to be heard. To be recognized. To be seen.

There is an honesty to this story that must be acknowledged. These are strong, weary, passionate, sad, and loving people. This novel wouldn’t work if the author had neglected to make her central characters authentically flawed. There is no perfection here. There is regret, there is hurt, there is pain. But The Break shows us the power a family’s love can have to heal. A power we can all wield, if we so choose.

You will never meet John Farvolden, so here’s a life in a nutshell. After finishing high school, John hitched a ride to Yellowknife, where he found work at the ill-fated Giant Mines. Shortly after, he was fired - for giving an impromptu SNL performance in the mud room, mimicking the no-nonsense shift boss. John didn’t fit well in the workaday world.

A budding career as a fire lookout in the high Rockies ended just as quickly when John failed to make his 4:00 pm radio call to Headquarters. Fearing something was amiss, two helicopters were immediately scrambled at great expense, only to discover him snoozing in a field of alpine flowers. John did not work well without constant supervision.

Shockingly, he was accepted into Military School Officer Training. As a confirmed night owl, the early morning revelries did not agree with John. One 5:00 a.m. morning, the drill sergeant found him still lying in bed, languidly blowing smoke rings at the ceiling, with that famous sardonic little grin. He was promptly drummed out of the Army. John didn’t like square boxes.

After military school, things went dark. Somehow he scratched enough money to fly to Thailand, travelling deep into the jungles along the Thai/Cambodia border amid the chaos of the fall of the Pol Pot dictatorship. He soon found work in one of the NGO refugee camps, distributing food to the hundreds of thousands of Cambodians fleeing the bloodbath of the Killing Fields of Cambodia. He had found his calling.

Every few months I received a crumbled blue air mail letter post marked from some collapsing third world hell hole with little information and no return address. For a time, the letters came from Central Africa, chronicling life amidst the famine, the drought, the amputees, the orphans, the child soldiers of powder keg dictatorships.

John contracted malaria, and was flown back to Canada to convalesce. Six months later, even more hollowed out and gaunt than his normal tall, pencil-thin physique, John flew back to Thailand. Eventually, he married a lovely Thai woman and fathered three children, all the time working for private relief agencies. Years later, he bundled up his family and settled in Kelowna, working graveyard in an emergency shelter, helping those that most of us step over.

So what counts in Life? A job that matters? A family that loves you? Your health?

John didn’t pay much attention to his health, preferring the sedentary existence of late nights alone, chain smoking till dawn. Doctors diagnosed emphysema.

Dangerous looking liver spots appeared under his scalp. John took remedial steps, but the damage was done. Soon after, a massive stroke left him paralyzed, unable to speak, in a semi-private facility populated by ancients with Alzheimer’s. John accepted his fate with typical Far Eastern grace and aplomb.

You will never meet John Farvolden. He died in that facility surrounded by family this past March 31. For those who measure success by cars, Caribbean cruises and big checking accounts, John wouldn’t be of much interest. But there are tens of thousands of people, descendants of those he saved in refugee camps, that owe a debt of gratitude to John. To them, and to those of us lucky enough to have brushed shoulders with John, he will remain in our hearts till our dying breath. Let him serve as a reminder of how a man lives his life is what matters - as Apple founder Steve Jobs put it, to make a small dent in the Universe. Without fanfare, without a spotlight, without as much as a footnote, John did just that. Farewell old friend.

My Food Matters

GOLDEN OLIVE OIL Olives are one of those foods that most of us either love or hate.

However olive oil is another story.

Preferred by Chefs around the world it has become a billion dollar industry.

If you purchase a true, unadulterated brand, despite the cost, you might be better off.

The other options, although bountiful, may be compromising the health benefits of this popular cooking oil.

Alarmingly, most olive oils in grocery stores have been altered in one form or another. Some that are labelled “Extra Virgin”, theoretically the first pressing of the olives, are far from that. Often, companies mix in other types of oil such as soy bean and call it Extra Virgin.

You can call a product whatever you want as long as there is an ingredient’s list. Call a processed vegetable burger a vegetable burger but, if you look at the list you may have to scroll down awhile till you see any trace of a vegetable.

The same goes for olive oil because of its billion dollar status around the word and its alleged mafia involvement.

So unless you buy it directly from a producer or a certified distributor, the olive oil in your kitchen marked “Italian Extra Virgin” is very likely, a fake. Sometimes it is not even from Italy. At worst, it’s not olive oil at all but a vegetable oil disguised with coloring and aroma.

Natural Mamas is a community for Mom’s who advocate and concern themselves with real food, healthy living & conscious parenting. They performed a study on Extra Virgin Olive oils and found that these brands were found to be questionable and contained other oils that are mixed with the better stuff.

• Bertolli • Mezzetta • Safeway • Carapelli • Newman’s Own • Star • Colavita Filippo Berio • Pompeian • Whole Foods • Mazzola • Rachel Ray In the same study, these olive oils did meet the extra-virgin standards: • Corto Olive • Lucero (Ascolano) • California Olive Ranch • McEvoy Ranch Organic • Kirkland Organic I suggest you choose Extra-virgin olive oil that has been cold pressed. This preferred method offers more healing properties and flavour. It should also be comprised of mostly monounsaturated fat that grows more solid when cold. When refrigerated, it ought to become thick and cloudy, however, this is not a fail-proof test, simply because adulterated oils may also become thick and cloudy in the refrigerator, i.e.; low grade refined olive oil.

Keep in mind that some manufacturers cut with different oils to create more yield making sure there is sufficient good stuff to promote solidification.

The better quality oil from olives is Extra Virgin, the first pressing. Generally, the second pressing is called olive oil and the third is the pressing of what’s left including the seeds, normally called pomase oil.

I suggest you purchase Extra Virgin Olive Oil that comes in a dark glass bottle, claims to be cold pressed and has a fruity flavour. The next step would be to enjoy it!

The Marsh King’s Daughter at Mahon Hall May 5, 6 & 7

This month, from the producers of Wild Swans, a rare fairy tale comes to life at Mahon Hall. The Marsh King’s Daughter, presented by Real Play Productions and adapted from Hans Christian Andersen’s story, is played by 24 Salt Spring youth, ages 4-15.

The story begins in Egypt where Pharoah Khufu (played by Keshua Welch), is influenced by the god Set (Levi Welch), losing his inner harmony and falling into a deep state of inexplicable sadness. The entire kingdom also succumbs to this sadness. Only Khufu’s eldest daughter, Princess Nefertiabet (Lila Adam Gordon) is immune. Determined to heal her father and restore the kingdom, the princess ventures out into the dessert and prays to the Goddess Aset (Lyla Luke) for guidance.

The story then journeys to the Marsh King’s Kingdom and to the land of the Vikings on a great adventure in which courage, faith, devotion, love and a little help from the Storks, prevail against all else.

Under the guidance of directors Kate Nash and Veronika Mckee, the youth of Real Play Productions have had a hand in all aspects of creating this production: play building, acting, dancing, singing, set design, costume design, makeup and stage management.

Play building is a unique process in that there is no initial script to work from. The entire company, together and in small groups, starts with the skeleton of the story and works each scene, and each dance, feeling out the story and getting to know it inside and out.

Pulling music from many genres (including songs by Jain, The Eurhythmics and Kanye West), bringing us to the vibrant lives of ancient civilizations and touching on questions asked throughout the ages, this production is sure to provide lasting entertainment. Runs May 5th, 6th and 7th at Mahon Hall. Tickets at Artspring and at the door.
