The Galiano Literary Festival is a 3-day festival designed with readers in mind within an intimate and interactive environment. Patrons can chat with their favourite writers, have their books signed after a reading, and be part of the literary conversation.

GALIANO LITERARY FESTIVAL

The Festival takes place at the scenic Galiano Island Oceanfront Inn from Friday February 19th to Sunday February 21st on Galiano Island, BC. It kicks off on Friday at 1pm with our Author Workshops, which include learning the techniques of short fiction to understanding the process of poetry writing.

Paradise LOST? NO ACTION IS NOT AN OPTION

This latest work by Salt Spring Island’s artist collective MONAD sets out to draw further attention, provoke thought and inspire action through Performance Art, Environmental Talks and Public Discussions. The focus being, our environment and in particular, St Mary Lake.

These series of events are the outcome of the collaboration between Anna Haltrecht and Luis Araújo, and are open to all who wish to witness and/or participate, and to experience the Lake in a whole new way.

Wednesday February 24th & Saturday the 27th, 7:30pm (bar @ 6:30).

PERFORMANCE ART EVENTS Immersed in a Video Art installation, the two performers will use movement and imagery, drawing in the audience, as part of the narrative. Inspired on the lifecycles of St Mary’s lake, a crucial resource for life on our Island.

‘Paradise Lost?’, aims to empower the audience to initiate action to protect and preserve our Nature’s Environment.

Revlon ULTRA HD MATTE Lipcolor Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolors are available in six shade selections however, at some point I sure hope they do an entire range of colours. I really love this formula and the limited colour selection was the only flaw I could find in the product.

Personally I think Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor takes the idea and formula of a liquid lipstick to a very new and exciting level.

I think describing them as matte can be a bit misleading as they aren’t truly matte in finish.

They wrap lips up in a nice cushy almost balmy layer of colour that feels lightly hydrating. I think they apply, look, and feel like a lip gloss on my lips versus a lipstick, likely why they have branded it a “Lipcolor.”

As it sets the finish develops a little further and looks almost like it has a cream or semi-matte finish but still the very comfortable, lightweight feel remains on lips with a little hint of nice moisture, definitely not dry and cracked.

I give this a 9 out of 10 and would definitely say it will make your lips pucker perfect this Valentine’s Day. $11.99

It is with so many fond memories I announce my exit from 7 years of successful partnership with Genevieve Price and The Fishbowl Magazine.

As a new mom and a new Albertan, life has taken me away from the local loop of the island, and as most of you know, Genevieve is more and more immersed in the community. My rock and roll lifestyle is now more ‘rocking chair’ and I couldn’t be happier about it!

It only seems right that Genevieve become the sole owner and operator of Fishbowl Magazine and keep bringing you a great magazine full of local events.

As best friends and business partners we have watched our little guppy of a magazine grow into an island staple and I couldn’t be more proud of what our passion for the island created. A lot of blood, sweat and tears went into building this brand and I’ll never forget the experience!

I am so excited for Genevieve in this new pursuit and know she will rock this.

NATURAL HEALTH NOTES with DR. PATRICK CALLAS TOP 4 BARRIERS to Healthy, Effective & Lasting Weight Loss Have you been unsuccessful at losing weight or keeping it off? Many of us are. Why is most weight loss unsustainable?

There are key barriers that must be removed before effective weight loss can truly begin.

Here are my Top 4 Barriers to Weight Loss: 1. Diets 2. Leaky Gut 3. Stress and Hormonal Imbalances 4. Positivity Drop the Diets: To lose weight we are fed starvation diets that we can’t effectively or happily sustain. Most diets will cause temporary weight loss because your body is reacting to a drastic change. However, your body inevitably adapts to the initial shock of the new diet or you will become sick of the restrictive diet. Diets tend to make us frustrated and unhappy.

Instead the answer is better nutrition. The focus needs to be on adding in more wholesome foods that help stabilize and boost your energy, and increase lean muscle mass.

Fix Your Leaky Gut: Food sensitivities are a type of slow acting allergy in the gut. Your food sensitivities cause an inflammatory reaction, which irritates the gut lining and leads to little holes in our intestines. These holes allow a cascade of an increasing amount of foods becoming sensitivities and causing inflammation. The net result is weight gain around the abdomen, fatigue, and a feeling of constant hunger even after eating.

Balance Your Hormones: Several hormonal imbalances may cause weight gain. Here we will briefly discuss cortisol and thyroid hormone.

Cortisol “the stress hormone” needs to be in adequate levels throughout the day in order for you to wake feeling refreshed and have a steady level of energy throughout the day.

Prolonged or severe stress puts cortisol out of rhythm, leading to a fatigue, weakness, sugar cravings, emotional hypersensitivity, inability to cope with stress and anxiety.

Low thyroid hormone causes easy weight gain, fatigue, depression, cold intolerance, and muscle cramps. Women are more susceptible to low thyroid function and standard medical testing of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) is inadequate.

Put a Pause on Positivity: The Weight Loss Industry is bursting with false positivity. All it does is create false hope and guilt when you can’t achieve its fantastic claims to easy weight loss. Step out of the cycle of phony fast fixes and self-guilt about your inability to lose the weight or keep it off in the past.

To shed your body weight, you absolutely need to shed the weight of your guilt, frustration, and self judgment. Here a counsellor, ND or other good emotional support may be necessary.

Finally, a bonus weight loss tip! The best time to exercise for weight loss is the first 2 hours after waking. A recent study by the British Journal of Nutrition showed an up to 20% increase in weight loss when exercising before breakfast and within the first two hours of waking. Exercise smarter, not harder.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS! Dear Singing Amma, We are pregnant with our first baby, are both a bit “older” for first-timers, and so, super excited! - but also a little, um, anxious. Could you tell us some important things to know about what to expect with this big newness we are embarking on?

Eagerly, Parents-to-Be Dear Eager Newbies!

SO exciting, and congratulations!

The first thing to tell you is this: having a baby will change your lives. I’ve sometimes heard soon-to-be parents (especially ones who’ve got a lot of life experience under their belts and are accustomed to having life be a certain way; who are living life by design) I’ve heard them say “This baby won’t change our lives. We like our lifestyle.

We are adding a baby to it, that’s all!” I inwardly cringe at this sentiment. Babies are never a “nice, little addition to life.” They may enter the world small in stature, but boy do they make an impact when they arrive! Expect life to never be the same - in truly wonder-filled ways – even though initially it won’t always feel like that.

Expect far less sleep than you’ve ever experienced in your life – and not because of your own social or natural, night-owl choices, but based on your new family member’s nighttime needs. I strongly encourage and recommend sleeping in the same room and, if possible and if you’re comfortable with it, the same bed. (King-size beds make the best “Family Beds.”)

Expect to be so moved by the wailing cries of this little human that it feels like it could tear your heart out and leave you feeling utterly useless in those first days and weeks if (when!) you can’t determine the cause, and therein the remedy, for these outbursts. I recommend checking for hunger (breast-feeding is best), diaper-changing (I am a very strong advocate for using cloth diapers – best for baby and the environment!) and, holding – being “inarms” is a strong, instinctual, human need in earliest life. (Don’t worry, you won’t “spoil” them. The verb “to spoil” deserves its whole, very own column. Later.)

Expect your adult sexual interests to be altered, and for some, to feel almost non-existent for a while. This is normally an uncharted, hush-hush area of life that needs to be talked about more openly so that when new parents experience a lowered libido following childbirth they understand this is natural and normal and based on hormonal fluctuations combined with utter exhaustion. (No, you have not suddenly “fallen out of love” with one another, though you may experience a profoundly deep sense of falling in love with someone new – your sweet and most precious Baby!) I recommend taking turns getting as much sleep as possible and being gentle, kind and loving with one another.

Expect a ka-zillion little changes: to have company in the bathroom, to realize just how fascinating basic human functions really can be, and to forget what quiet sounds like… Oh! - and, heaps-and-tons of BIG Love!

this February This February the ArtSpring Presents series showcases a fabulous range of performances. On February 2nd, actor and musician Chase Padgett (who brought the wonderful 6 Guitars to ArtSpring last season) returns with his newest one-man masterpiece Nashville Hurricane. Padgett plays a range of characters as each one tells their side of the rise, demise, and resurrection of the best damn guitar player you’ve never heard of: Nashville Hurricane.

Incredible pianist, gifted songwriter and singer Michael Kaeshammer returns to ArtSpring for his sixth time on February 9th! Michael’s energy and talents are so engaging to the ArtSpring crowd that we couldn’t resist the opportunity to bring him back.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with your sweetheart and longtime Conductor and Artistic Director Jon Washburn as he leads the nationally renowned Vancouver Chamber Choir in an acappella programme that traces choral repertoire back to the Gregorian chant on which it is based. On February 13th, Washburn teaches a choral workshop open to all voices – full choirs as well as individuals.

Blackie and the Rodeo Kings member and multi Juno awardwinning musician Stephen Fearing returns to ArtSpring on February 19th. His performance features original songs and instrumentals that are described as “rugged, edgy, unapologetic all the while tender, intuitive and genuine” (Earshot).

Formed in East Berlin in 1985 and still with its original members, the Vogler Quartet quickly established itself as one of the finest quartets of its generation. The quartet teams up with captivating Canadian pianist Ian Parker on February 23rd for a dynamic evening of classical music.

Anna Haltrecht and Luis Araújo of Salt Spring’s MONAD present a four-day event in the ArtSpring gallery that runs from February 24th to 27 called “Paradise Lost?” No action is not an option.

“And I was like...”

“So he said that it was like going to cost me like another five dollars. And I was like . . .” Insert whatever expression fits at this point, likely an expression suggesting shock and disgust something foul stuck to the bottom of your shoe. The human face has 42 muscles, giving rise to 21 distinct facial expressions and a gamut of in-between nuances. “. . . And I was like . . .” followed by the appropriate grimace has become the new form of communication - newspeak of the millennium.

It’s not just spotty teens that are embracing this conversational quirk. From cradle to grave, people are regressing to pantomime as the default mechanism of communication, compelling the listener to look up from their lunch to see what hellish mock expression is on the talker’s mug. Words are facing extinction.

There are other disturbing markers. “Up talk” is now an official word, meaning someone who ends a statement as if it were a question? Like that. According to sociologists, “up talk” is predominantly employed by the privileged, entitled white girl class to appear less intelligent and thus less threatening to the privileged white male playing field. White males speak up talk to appear more feminine and less threatening to women.

These horrid conversational distractions can be traced back to San Fernando Valley, immortalized by the 1982 Frank Zappa tune “Valley Girl.” Despite the obscure provenance, North American (and by extension global) culture has embraced it.

Want more? A growing number of US states no longer require children to learn cursive writing, focusing rather on keyboard skills. We are averaging five hours of TV, ninety minutes on digital TV, and five hours on our smart phones. Per day.

In 2007, 31% of Canadians did not read a single book. Not one. Of those Canucks who did bother to pick up a book, 11 million read the latest Harry Potter - essentially TV in print form. After Harry, the predominance of best sellers was from the self help category. This past Christmas, the best selling books were colouring books for adults.

This sorry state reflects the North American 21st Century zeitgeist.

As author David Foster Wallace put it, the “anesthetic against loneliness.” Finding meaning and purpose without putting in the work - as if viewing Downtown Abbey will somehow by osmosis imbue culture, or watching a thirty second YouTube clip featuring the Pope or the Dalai Lama will thunder-strike enlightenment. Or signing an on-line petition to halt the cruelty visited upon elephants in Thailand will compel the handler to lay down his whip.

Years of print experience has taught newspaper publishers to set a hard count for an opinion column at 750 words - 1200 words for magazines. That is the attention span of the average reader. Communication is fast becoming a lost art, supplanted by theatrical gesticulation, keyboards, and Kardashianesque histrionics. It’s high time we get back to the hard work of the English language. Let’s get back to using our words.

Cupcakes for

ANIMALS National Cupcake Day is upon us, on Leap Day,

Monday February 29th.

This is the second year on Salt Spring that the BC SPCA in partnership with local animal heroes will bake off hundreds of delicious cupcakes to raise funds for SPCAs and Humane Societies across Canada. In 2015, local supporters raised nearly $1,500 locally in one day of cupcake selling at schools, businesses, and in front of the Fire Hall in Ganges.

This year, we are inviting more animal lovers to sign up and bake a difference for animals in need by hosting a cupcake party at work, home, or school. It’s a fun and engaging way to get people of all ages involved for animals.

My Food Matters

Daily Dairy, Considering we are the only species on the planet that eats the milk of another, shouldn’t that raise concerns about its popularity in the common household? Why is this overlooked and seemingly not a concern based on the billions spent on dairy every year?

Anyone over 50 should recall how milk was glorified in our early years. Do you remember the milk box built into your house with the two doors so that your “milkman” could deliver you more? Or the milk “smile” displayed every 15 minutes during a commercial break in one of the most massive campaigns in marketing history, subliminally labelled as an extension of a mother’s breast milk, apparently? If you had Oreo’s in your cupboard, you’d most likely have the white liquid in your fridge.

Studies and findings regarding food issues and benefits are presented to us almost every week. However, food guides can take years to get updated.

The scientifically based recommendations state that 2 cups of milk or soy beverage, 1 &1/2 cups of yogurt or 3 oz. of cheese and more for people over fifty will give you the proper amount of 16 essential ingredients and a good source of calcium.

However, I’m sure many of us consume a lot more. It wouldn’t take much. So then a question should be raised. What would happen if we ate more than recommended on a daily basis? Vegetables, we can assume can be put on a bottomless plate. But does it hold true for other food groups. The recommendations imply that you get at least “this” much, don’t they?

A serving? What is that? Many times a serving is determined by food manufacturers and restaurateurs. If you order a milk shake at your favourite parlour and it is (you can count on this) more than what the government recommends for a whole day and you can with no problem polish it off, you’ll probably polish it off.

The point is; it isn’t that healthy when you compare it to other things. Non-animal sources of calcium, for instance, leafy greens, nuts, dried basil, parsley are generally both healthier and more easily absorbed. A doctor will not tell you to stop eating vegetables when you have a cold but he/she may tell you to refrain from dairy.

Multiple cultures are everywhere. Certain foods that have been manipulated for producer’s advantages over the years are very difficult for certain individuals to digest. Some experience certain foods for the first time when settling in a new continent, most notably North America. Many of them cannot tolerate the milk from a cow for instance because of lacto-intolerance.

Just a side note; it takes 1000 gallons of water to produce 1 litre of milk.

I am not advocating that we all stop eating dairy. But perhaps we should take a little better look at the amounts, find some alternatives and not forget the dairy hiding in baked and cooked products.

STARTING...AGAIN... & AGAIN... & AGAIN...

No, I am not just talking about yoga.

I am talking about every project you initiate whether it be exercise, healthy routines, meditation, business, art, writing, etc. You name it; the first step is starting.

Next, it is important to know that to keep the project or routine going, it is likely you will have to start over, and over and over again! If you don’t recognize this common and important cycle, of starting and stopping, you may feel like your project or routine has failed.

Or worse, that you are a failure in life! Obstacles happen! It takes wisdom and experience to know that when an obstacle arises it may cause you to temporarily stop. You must keep your vision strong and know that you can work through it; or stop, regroup and start again. Stopping is different than quitting. Just start...again!

Meditation is a great way to practice this principal. In meditation you try to stay “in the present moment”. The mind will inevitably wander into thought. You must notice when you have wandered and gently bring yourself back over and over again.... possibly 30 times in 10 minutes! That is what the practice becomes; wandering - come back - wandering - come back. Some days are better than others. Ideally we would like to stay in meditative bliss for the entire designated time. Luckily we get the benefits of meditation even if we wander off many times. Even seasoned meditators will have days when they struggle.

Just like with meditation, we wish we could stay on target all the time, but it is challenging. If you recognize the “start - stop start - stop” cycle you will not feel like a failure if you “fall off the wagon” because you know that it is a natural cycle that happens with everyone. That way, it will not take you as long to get back on target each time. The feeling of failure is the worst enemy of success. Don’t let fear of failure cause you to quit. Fear is a part of the natural process. Develop a healthy relationship with fear.

Want to start a healthy routine to last the rest of your life? Imagine how many times you will be “starting again”. Lots! Some days, weeks, months or years will be better than others. That’s life!

One of my favourite quotes has been the Nike quote “Just do it!”.

Lately I have changed it to “Just start it...again!”.

Last Bus to Wisdom

by Ivan Doig This book is jam-packed full of excitement and adventure. It’s the only way to describe what befalls 11-yearold Donal Cameron as he makes his way from Montana to Wisconsin, then back again, and to many points between. In the summer of 1951, Donal’s been living on the Double W ranch with his Gram, who’s the cook there. Orphaned, Donny has nowhere to go when Gram needs surgery for “women’s troubles” so she sends him via “dog bus” (more commonly known as the Greyhound) all the way to her sister Kate’s in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. As he travels he has a string of mishaps, humorous and otherwise, and also meets a host of rich characters.

Just when you begin to think you’ll be on the blasted bus with him forever, Donal finally arrives at Aunt Kate and Uncle Herman’s home. Unfortunately, Aunt Kate turns out to be a real piece of work.

She’s not cruel, just completely ignorant of how to care for a young boy. Unhappy, Donny takes solace in his Uncle Herman’s sense of “The language serves humour and stories. However, after to evoke time & place one altercation too many, Kate but it also endears ships him back off to his Gram, you very quickly to where he’s likely to end up in our young hero.”

Foster Care as she’s still in recovery at the hospital. Now this is where it gets really interesting…turns out Herman’s had enough of Kate’s controlling ways and he joins Donal on yet another dog bus ride, headed wherever the road may take them. The second half of this novel has more twists and turns than you can imagine, and we soon discover that these two runaways make an excellent team.

This story is written with just about every colloquialism and slang word you can imagine people in that time and place would be fond of. I feel like Donny’s voice and expressions are stuck in my head now. I find it hard to even write this review without filling it up with “phooey” and “ain’t”. The language serves to evoke time and place but it also endears you very quickly to our young hero. The author tells an old fashioned western-esque story, but it’s one that you just can’t be cynical about (and believe me, it’s in my nature to try). It’s an honest and colourful coming of age story. Vivid in landscape, and in this case brilliantly nuanced.

For centuries potters have been transforming the earth into art, with the understanding that one’s life is a like piece of clay, with no one but themselves to transform it. Now the Salt Spring Island Potters Guild prepares to transform the profile of ceramic artists and potters on Vancouver Island and The Gulf Islands by launching The Salt Spring Island Ceramic Awards (SSICA), a biennial ceramic prize, promoting the artistic and technical excellence in ceramic art.

Calling out to all resident artists in the communities of Vancouver Island and The Gulf Islands, Salt Spring, known for its creative passion in promoting the arts, is honouring both emerging and established Island artists by providing them with the opportunity to compete for up to $4,200 in prize money, with the first artist taking home $3,000. The Salt Spring Island Potters Guild member Judy Weeden reflects, “Being one of the oldest Potters Guilds in Canada, our intent is to celebrate and honour these ancient traditions practiced with such excellence on our West Coast Islands.”The best part, jurors will not know who the artist is, so it does not matter “who” the artist is, what matters is the artist’s creative skills that demonstrate originality, quality, and integrity, resulting in a work that holds a creative visual impact and a depth of meaning.

Juror David Lloyd expresses, “What I look for in a good piece of ceramic art is in the piece in its entirety. I want to turn it around and around and enjoy it as if it moves. I love to pause quietly with a sense of respect for its maker, revealing their command of technical virtuosity and character.”

Artist exposure will be extensive, as Salt Spring Island is known as one of Canada’s premier art communities. In total, 50 to 70 final works will be selected by a three-member jury with professional skills in ceramic curation, creation and education. Original works will be exhibited and for sale at historic Mahon Hall on Salt Spring Island, from October 6 to October 16, 2016, with winners announced at the Gala Awards on October 16, 2016.

SSICA welcomes emerging and established ceramic artists and potters from Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands to prepare for and submit original sculptural and/or functional ceramic work, consisting of fired clay, with the Call for Submissions opening January 15 to May 31, 2016.

Did you know that now is a great time to get your outdoor-loving, free-roaming cats sterilized? Most females don’t start their heat cycle until the days get longer and brighter in March. Once they do, it’s only a matter of instinct for the meandering tom to impregnate and add more kittens to our already overpopulated island.

Our SPCA is here to help residents of low-income get their kittens and cats spayed and neutered with our SNIP-funded vouchers for reduced cost surgeries performed by our awesome local veterinarians. Through the “pay-it-forward” design of the SNIP fund, for as little as $42 per cat, users contribute $30 back into the fund and pay $12 for annual pet identification with www.bcpetregistry.ca. Since it began in 2014, there have been nearly 200 vouchers issued for local animals.

Many cat aficionados are convinced that neutered male cats make excellent pets when children are involved. Maybe it’s their calm way of lounging or appreciation for human contact in the form of snuggles, but most boy cats I have got to know after they were neutered were particularly affectionate and good with people.

Nothing against the female cats, who even after being spayed, tend to stay quite connected to their territorial-management brains. After all, being the only caregiver to her kittens she brings into the world, protecting and providing are jobs to which she knows instinctively.
