starring the most awesome John Bateman I don’t exercise. I find it uncomfortable and time consuming. Believe me, I’ve tried exercising. At one point I even manages to exercise for a month* (*a month here is represented by a total of four, non consecutive weeks based on exercising once a week).

In years past I have attempted, cycling, weight lifting, swimming, complaining and tai-chi.

Of all the different varieties I have worked through, the most painful seems to be running. It’s not just because my lack of motivation ranks on a historical scale. It’s also because when I run I look like an idiot. No, I look like more of an idiot.

A brief look at ancient history informs us that humans ran for two reasons. Number one was to run toward something and far more importantly, number two which was to run away from something. Historically we didn’t run in circles.

However these days things have changed. People will walk out of their house or jump in their car, find a place to run in a big, (or small) circle, only to return home again and reminisce with a friend or family member about “the burn”. Even more odd are those that choose to stay in their house and run of a moving belt. I assume this is to avoid running from something out in the big bad world.

I’m sure by now my bullet-proof argument has convinced everyone in the world to not run, but not so fast. I actually think people should run for a very specific reason: Cancer.

In my life I have very few people that I consider to be actual heroes. One of these people is Terry Fox. Not only did he show unthinkable courage in the face of the ultimate adversity, he has come to personify a global effort to find a cure for cancer.

Years ago, I might not have viewed the Terry Fox run as an important event to participate or contribute to. Now I do. In the last fifteen years I have had several close family members forced to deal with cancer. Luckily the survivors have outweighed those lost, but believe me, the losses that I faced were profound. There aren’t many people that have not faced cancer personally or through a loved one.

It isn’t enough that cancer awareness, prevention and effective treatments are at a historical high. We need to keep our feet going until there is a cure. On Sunday September 27th, I am going to go out and look like an idiot while I run (maybe walk) for Terry Fox. You should come too.

Fight Cruelty with Kindness

Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, the late sixties, my father, an arch conservative, button down General in the Canadian Air Force, was commanding officer at Canadian Forces Base Cold Lake, Alberta. The Vietnam War was raging, there were riots in the streets, and every mother’s son was lighting up to the protest songs of Dylan, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, and an army of other misfit troubadours. Revolution was in the air, even as far away as Cold Lake Alberta.

Pierre Eliot Trudeau was running for Prime Minister - that long haired, caped Liberal standing tall against the might of the USA, matched with a beautiful wife who hung with Mick Jagger. One of Trudeau’s whistle stops was CFB Cold Lake. It was incumbent upon my father to greet him at the airport and roll out the red carpet for this man who represented everything that rubbed the General the wrong way.

Of course, my rebel friends and I were caught up in “Trudeaumania.” The anticipation of actually seeing Pierre in person sent us into a tizzy. On the morning of his arrival, I festooned the family station wagon with Trudeau stickers, flags, and bunting in the true blue Liberal colours. I packed it with my rebel buddies and parked ourselves on the airport road, cheering like little girls as Trudeau’s entourage (followed by my father’s “The anticipation staff car,) made its way to the Officer’s of actually seeing Mess. When Dad saw the highly Pierre in person sent recognizable family car decked out in us into a tizzy.”

Slowing down is a big reason my husband and I moved to Salt Spring from Vancouver. Over time, we have seen the contradiction of our wish to have more time for play is met with demands of a heavy workload. For instance, there is no shortage of animalrelated issues or programs designed to help improve things for future generations of Islanders. It’s my ideal, utopian dream, that our Gulf Islands could be a humane community for its animals and people.

Yet living here five years has taught me just how deep the contradictions go and highlighted how tough it is to persevere through the dark sided way irresponsible people treat other beings, especially animals, like they were “less-than.” Do we think that it’s okay to: leave a box of sick kittens at a community mailbox? Giveaway free animals online? Abandon cats or relocate wildlife up the mountain? Drive like a maniac on our poorly maintained roads? Tie up a puppy to a rope outside for the day...everyday? Leave our pooch in a parked car on a sunny day?

I am astrologically bound to look at the world with rose-coloured glasses and remain hopeful even in the face of tremendous ugliness. For many of us, the solution is in the reduction of suffering and promotion of kindness. If only beings suffered less, there could be more joy. We are all in this together, after all.

Needless to say, a lively discussion ensued back home, culminating with a suitcase tossed on my bed. Somehow I managed to convince the General to tolerate me until I finished the school year, at which point I promptly hitched to Yellowknife to work in the gold mines, but that’s another story.

The point is, that election was historic. Trudeau won against all odds, by marshalling out the youth vote - truly a Canadian political first. Fast forward to 2015. All us baby boomer rebels have been quietly crushed into boring old Canadian conformity.

Mortgages, families, second and sometimes third families, pension worries, car payments, hot tubs and health care have somehow turned us all into our fathers - arch conservatives clutching at ourselves, reluctant to rock the political and economic boat, lest it affect our golden years. In the previous federal election, Stephen Harper was on the ropes, yet he won handily. Similarly, in the last provincial election, Christie Clark had memorized her concession speech, only to be swept back into office. No matter how much we bitch and complain, it appears when we enter the ballot box, the ghosts of our fathers whisper in our ear. We put our “X” beside the safe bet - to Mr Harper. To Ms Clark. This time, go to the attic, pull out that old leather jacket with the fringe, fire up Neil Young on the iPad, and rediscover your rebel yell. After forty-odd years, let’s vote for change again.

I cannot say it plainer: We each have a responsibility to be kind. Intending kindness in our actions becomes a momentum-driving force for good in the world. For some reason, “kindness” is a soft-sell and yet is the antidote to almost all villainry. I say “almost,” because there will always be those folks who are psychopathic and do not care for kindness unless it benefits them directly. The rest of us have no excuse.

One way we could be kinder on Salt Spring is to SLOW DOWN. On our streets, for example, driving the speed limit or less is helpful not only to the high-volume of vehicles and bikers in the summer, but also to animals who attempt to cross. Deer, dogs, cats, rabbits, and people are all at risk from the non-kind act of making speed our demon.

Another way to put some kindness into the world is to sign up to volunteer and fundraise for the BC SPCA. We are gearing up for the 2015 Scotiabank & BC SPCA Paws for a Cause taking place on Sunday October 4th at Heiwa and Mouat’s Park. This is the first walk here in five years and we are coming together to fight animal cruelty. Why not put some good into the world and join us? YOGA & MORE ON GOOD HABITS

“Considering that our habits create our life, there is arguably no single skill that is more important for you to learn and master than controlling your habits. You must identify, implement, and maintain the habits necessary for creating the results you want in your life, while learning how to let go of any negative habits which are holding you back from achieving your true potential.” ~ Hal Elrod How in shape or out of shape you are. How happy or unhappy you are. How successful or unsuccessful you are. Are essentially a result of your habits.

Last month I talked about making new habits so small (5 minutes; of jogging, yoga, meditation etc. everyday) that it would be easy to fit into your schedule, thus having a greater chance of success in establishing a new habit. Choosing habits that are incredibly easy to start and maintain are key.

Below are ideas for easy ways to establish you in new habits by associating or combining the new habit with something you already do.

For instance, when I get home from work I sit in my parked car for 5 minutes and meditate. I am in a comfortable, warm place and it is quiet. If I were to go into the house to meditate I would get distracted and waste time and possibly not meditate at all. This method has been helpful for me to develop the very good habit of meditating regularly.

Another habit I have been working on is to make sure I eat a raw veggie or fruit with every cooked meal. It is easy because when I have finished making the meal, I just have to remember to throw a carrot or piece of cuke on my plate and I am set!

Here are some more examples of how we can connect good habits with activities we already do: • upon arising in the morning - do 10 sit-ups or push-ups or 2 yoga poses • brushing teeth - repeat 3 positive affirmations 3 times • sent an email - get off your chair and stretch; have a drink of water • driving in car - 10 deep breaths; work on good posture • riding on bus - attempt to empty your mind & relax your shoulders for a few minutes • making meals - phone your mother (put her on speaker phone).

Do this at least once a week.

• eating meals - gratitude time!

• watching TV - lay on the floor and stretch your legs; or lay on the floor with your legs up on the couch • commercials - do sit-ups, push-ups, yoga or some other exercise the entire time of the commercial • bedtime - think of 3 things/people you are grateful for, visualize a positive/productive next day and go to bed 15 mins early so you can read Do all of the above and be healthier, have a calmer mind, be filled with gratitude and...your mom will love you!

Have you read Plato’s The Republic?

No shame if you haven’t, I can’t say that I have. However, knowing the basic premise will give you an idea of the direction this story is headed. In The Republic, Plato wrote about his idea of a “just man” and an ideal community. It is important to consider that even a great mind can be flawed, and as this fictional novel shows, human beings usually revert to the same patterns of behaviour they’ve always had.

The three central voices in this story, who each have their own dedicated chapters are as follows, Maia, a young woman from the 1800s, who being frustrated that as a woman she will never be free to explore intellectual pursuits, is plucked from her time by Athene to become a Master (teacher) in the Just City; Apollo, who is both a God and incarnated as a young boy; and Simmea, a girl of eleven who is kidnapped by slavers and sold at a market, only to find herself delivered to be raised in the Just City. We are also introduced to many historical characters, not least of whom is Sokrates, and we see the lively debates that erupt as “We are also introduced a matter of course. Is a copy of a to many historical work of art still art? Is there such a characters... & we see the thing as platonic love? Is it best to lively debates that erupt remain detached from children? as a matter of course.” If we take away choice in the pursuit of excellence are we still being just? This makes for fascinating reading.

Jo Walton is an award winning Welsh-Canadian author of many science fiction and fantasy novels. Her book, The Just City, seems to not fit into the sci-fi category so much as the “imagine if” category.

Imagine if the goddess Pallas Athene decided to embark on the experiment of re-creating Plato’s city. Imagine if, being omnipotent, she could travel in time to assemble all the world’s greatest philosophers and minds, in fact anyone who’d ever had a fervent wish and prayer to her that they might one day have the experience of living in “The Republic”. Imagine if her brother Apollo had a desire to see what life is like through human eyes, and so he became one of the thousands of children brought to this place to be raised by the learned Masters. Imagine if it works. Imagine if it doesn’t.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and calling Colorado home, Gregory Alan Isakov has been traveling all his life. Songs that hone a masterful quality beyond his years tell a story of miles and landscapes, and the search for a sense of place. Music has been a stabilizing and constant force. “I’ve always had this sense about music and writing that I sort of have to do it. Like I’ll implode without it. I probably wouldn’t do it if I felt any other way.”

Jonathan Byrd is a preacher’s son, a Gulf War veteran, and a Kerrville New Folk award winner from seven generations of North Carolinians.

A Jonathan Byrd show is musical theatre, bringing together the Texas songwriting tradition with southern storytelling and hot guitar picking in the line of North Carolina greats Doc Watson and Tony Rice.

A stalwart of modern folk music, Byrd has released five solo albums with a surprising variety of musical directions, and an acoustic collaboration with fellow songwriter Diana Jones.

NATURAL HEALTH NOTES with DR. PATRICK CALLAS VITAMIN DEFICIENCIES: Are You Getting Enough Vitamins?

Part 2: Vitamin B12, Methylcobalamin Did you know vitamin B12 comes in different forms when you get it in supplements at your local health food store?

The most common forms of vitamin B12 are cyanocobalamin, adenosylcobalmin, hydroxycobalamin, and methylcobalamin.

The methyl form of vitamin B12 is the most active and useful to our bodies. Supplementing with the other forms of vitamin B12 provides us less immediate and arguably less overall benefit. Cyanocobalamin is the least useful form of vitamin B12 to us. The cyano- in cyanocobalamin stands for cyanide. A little is not particularly harmful to us, but sure is not necessary. The reason some vitamins and mineral use cyanocobalamin or hydroxycobalamin is to save them money when buying the raw material.

What is the Function of Vitamin B12?

Vitamin B12 is necessary for proper energy metabolism, immune function and nervous function.

Causes of Vitamin B12 Deficiency • Naturally-occurring vitamin B12 is found in animal products so vegetarians and vegans are more susceptible to vitamin B12 deficiency without appropriate supplementation.

• Deficiency is often caused by stomach irritation because sufficient stomach acid is needed to cleave B12 from our food so we can properly absorb it.

• Alcoholism depletes all B vitamins and will lead to deficiencies in vitamin B12 amongst others.

Vitamin B12 Deficiency Symptoms The classic vitamin B12 deficiency symptom is pernicious anemia. However, the brain and nerves tend to be affected first. Impaired nerve function can cause numbness, a pins and needles sensation, or a burning feeling in the feet, as well as impaired mental function. Deficiency of methylcobalamin may contribute to age-related cognitive decline.

Vitamin B12 is stored in the liver, kidneys and other tissues so deficiency symptoms may take up to 5 years to show up. If you suspect you are at risk of low vitamin B12 or have tested for low levels in your blood, start supplementing today.

Sublingual (under the tongue) vitamin B12 is the best form to take. When vitamin B12 absorbs under the tongue it avoids the lengthy process of digestion and is directly absorbed into the bloodstream so it can travel to where it needs to go.

Sublingual vitamin B12 is the next best thing to intramuscular injections.

Vitamin B12 for Cancer Chemotherapy depletes blood levels of vitamin B12. Blood tests may still show normal vitamin B12 levels during chemotherapy, but they are most likely false. Chemo drugs turn vitamin B12 into an inactive or useless form that still reads as normal on our current blood tests. Anyone undergoing chemotherapy must supplement with sublingual or intramuscular vitamin B12 to maintain healthy levels and help prevent nerve damage (neuropathy), which is all-too-common with chemotherapy.

That means Fall Fair, Pride and my next 6 month check up. How could six months have passed by?

Check-ups have become markers for me. As they draw near I try to reflect on the time that has passed since my last. I think about a few things like...

Has life been fulfilling? By that I mean was there richness?

Did I learn anything new, face a challenge fearlessly, or do anything awesome? I should have answered yes to at least one of these. This falls back to the commitment of living life fully engaged. As we are pulled along the conveyer belt of day-today life, it helps to remind yourself there is purpose in it and be present in all the little moments while living with intention. Take it all in deeply for each moment is fleeting.

Did I work hard, did I live honestly and harmlessly?

Post cancer, I have new drive to work harder then ever to build awesomeness. To do things that matter on a larger scale then just survival but rather do what makes a difference to even just one person, the planet, my family, and myself gives me great drive.

And speaking my truth has become something I cannot deny myself.

In the past I would hold feelings in somewhere deep inside. That place was zapped away and there is no room for hidden feelings anymore. I feel the need to express them all, and often. I envision every suppressed feeling as baggage piling up and weighing me down. I can’t carry it anymore so I carefully dispose of it, honestly, and without anger.

Did I spread some joy, laughter, or help someone in need?

All we do here in this existence is like ripples in the pond of life.

What do you want to spread as those little ripples reach all sides of the pond and all you share it with! A chain reaction of richness, love, respect and fun is a nice choice of legacy. Make it better for those you touch and let that spread!

Forgiveness, acceptance and no judgement.

Forgive yourself if you fell off your manifesto even just a little, forgive others if you feel they have treated you wrong (because you don’t have room to carry their shit) and don’t judge anyone as that is not productive and let’s face it..keeping yourself on track is a full time job!

No end of reasoning will get her to shift her position, even when it is something we know she will enjoy once she gets there. Any suggestions? signed, Trying-to-be-Patient Parents Dear Trying Patience It can be challenging to find our selves in a circular, spiraling, behavioral pattern with our children. Patience can indeed be a key ingredient. “Patience is an inner pause, a moment we give ourselves to breathe through our initial reaction so we can move to the place where a calm, thoughtful, peaceful response is born.” ~ L.R. Knost If it feels impossible, in the midst of the furor, to take that breath, to create that “inner pause,” it can be helpful to buy yourself time. Say you need to go to the bathroom. Go in there, gently close the door, lock it if need be, and, well, just breathe! It is amazing what removing yourself from the heat of the moment and taking a few breaths can do for shifting energy.

Sometimes there can be such a thing as “too much patience” – or rather, too much allowing certain behaviors to rule the roost. It is OK to feel angry or frustrated, and to let your children know. Say how you feel, without attack or blame: “I feel really angry right now! I feel like yelling and stomping my feet!” Then model positive ways to get yourself through the upset. Say: “The thing is, we all get upset sometimes. And that’s OK. Right now what I need is to burn off some energy and regain my equilibrium.” Then let them know you are going for a walk or a bike ride, if there is someone to leave the kids with, or, if not, to go dance or do jumping jacks in another room.

I strongly recommend less reasoning! In the context of your adult relationships, if something is bothering you does it help for a partner or a friend to point out all the reasons why it shouldn’t bother you? No? Yeah, kids too. Engaging in reasoning during an upset is actually giving attention to the behavior you wish to change, and so, reinforcing it.

Practice saying less. Make one statement about what you see and what you expect. “I see a very angry face! It sounds like you are very frustrated. I am not going to discuss or argue with you about this. We made this plan last night. We are leaving in five minutes. I expect you to be ready and to meet me at the door. While I am getting myself ready to go, I’ll be knowing how upset you are.” And then stop talking. Go about your business and be ready, by the door, in five. Thenresist the temptation to engage further on the car ride! Put on some music, get silly, be playful and enjoy the ride!

Death, as a result of life, is constant. We know this, we are surrounded by it, and due to endless reminders through news and media we are unlikely ever to forget, even if we are so blessed as to not have experienced loss personally.

No matter how close, death is always too near for comfort and it has been dancing far too close these last few months. I have been fortunate in the sense that I have not personally lost anyone but my loved ones have been losing theirs, a part of themselves, and thus I have lost as well.

These deaths have not been the predictable sort either. They have not, for the most part, been death due to old age or the end of a journey with sickness. These deaths have been unexpected tragedies.

With the numerous deaths my friends and family have been forced to deal with as of late I have been counting my blessings…and my people.

Now, this is not news but it made me realize that the more people you are surrounded by, the more likely you are to suffer. Larger families experience more tragedy, frequent losses, and an array of intense emotion. The trade-off there is that you have a larger support group and folks to love and be loved by.

As C.S. Lewis wrote, “To love at all is to be vulnerable.” Ain’t that the truth.

Which makes me wonder. Is it good that I have a smaller than average family surrounding me?

For all of the love a family at all is to be vulnerable.” has for one another I have for my Ain’t that the truth.” mom who raised me, an only child, on her own. To lose my mom would be the same as losing both parents and siblings for me and I cannot imagine what losing her only son would be like for my mom.

Not to say that having siblings or multiple children is like having replacements for those you lose. There is no replacing a loved one. But certainly having large friend and family circles is worthwhile in that you have a large support group which is especially important when tragedy strikes.

I have been unsure how to support my friends through these rough times. I know they are spending time grieving with their family and I don’t wish to pry or say the wrong thing. I also know that people often feel abandoned by friends during times of crisis. People shy away for exactly the same reasons: not knowing what to say and not knowing how to act.

Death is life altering, life changing. Death is constant. Death is a part of life. Support your friends who are grieving just as you would hope for them to support you.

But most importantly, “What do we say to the god of death?” as written by the merciless George R.R. Martin, “Not today.”
