Scopes Brought to you by our own in-house astrologer who now goes by her numerologically correct name of “Ya Righta.”

^ Aries:

d When picking up hitchhikers this month, take care to notice any loose change that they may drop, grab the money, then drive. This is likely the only good fortune you’ll have this month.

_ Taurus:

e Scorpio:

Your Aries horoscope for today is both happy and sad. Happy that you’re looking at it, and sad that you’re going to turn away while shaking your head. This is your life, and you should feel perfectly free to bugger it up royally.

` Gemini:

Everything you read today may turn out to be a complete crock of $&*!, or alternatively contain very insightful tidbits detailing the most intimate details of your unconscious self.

a Cancer:

Libra:

Your worst fears may come to light today when you come face to face with what may or may not be a yeti. Back away slowly…Yeti or South ender you are smart to steer clear.

f Sagittarius:

The very thought of coming up with a horoscope for you made me laugh. However, after a great deal of effort and star searching we’ve got nothing!

I do not think this horoscope means what you think it means. But what does it really mean? Or does it mean anything at all? Have we lost you yet?

g Capricorn:

b Leo:

h Aquarius:

c Virgo:

i Although your faults are easy enough to see, you must really make an effort today to let people truly understand the depth of your problems. Whine away darling, whine away.

Your legs look nice today. Show them off in some kind of very short skirt that nearly shows your bits and pieces. Yes, Derek, we’re talking to you! You can’t hide from the rest of the day, so I suggest you burst headlong into it without waiting for anyone to catch up.

Wednesday will be a good day for you this month, but which Wednesday in particular is up to you. Your ability to speak may be impaired this month as you experience repeated foot in mouth syndrome. Might be best to keep quiet at the next staff function too.

BURT’S BEES Aloe & Linden Flower AFTER SUN SOOTHER The Burt’s Bees after sun soother is one of my favourite “after sun” products. I do always keep a bottle of pure Aloe Gel in the cupboard too. This product is super hydrating but not greasy at all. Obviously, if you cook yourself, this product isn’t going to change that, but if you slightly overdo it, it can really save your skin. The only downside of this lotion is the smell... It’s a bit old school. Otherwise, Burt’s Bees After Sun Soother is an awesome product. Love it.

PETER VINCENT

CITIZEN at LARGE

A week after my sixty-fifth birthday, I dropped into my local credit union. The service rep glanced at her screen and chirped “Congratulations! You now have a ‘Senior’s Account!” I barked back that I didn’t WANT a Senior’s account, that the last thing I needed was yet another reminder that the years are ticking away, and soon I will be wearing a mesh hat and those wraparound sunglasses. No thank you. The service rep explained to me that a Senior’s account has no monthly fees and no checking fees. My resistance slipped away like a dose of salts. Free stuff! As time moves along, I find that there are age perks all over the place. I get 50% off ferry fares most days, 15% off certain days at the Pharmasave, 10% off at the Fritz theatre, 10% off most motels, and the big daddies, a massive property tax deferral and an additional $2000.00 “Age Credit” off my income tax. The ugly truth is, I don’t need the perks - and neither do the vast majority of Canadians who have reached the magic age of 65, particularly the ten million baby boomers (those born between 1946 and 1966.) Three quarters of us own our own homes mortgage free. As a group, Canadian boomers stand to inherit an insane $750 billion over the next ten years, averaging about $180,000 a head. So why the perks? Why does merely attaining 65 years qualify me for all this manna from heaven? Age may have been relevant sixty years ago, when the government took notice of seniors eating cat food and coming to unhappy, impoverished ends at average seventy-one years of age. Thanks to the $76 billion the government now pumps into CCP and Old Age Security, the number seniors living below the poverty “As a group, Canadian of line is now a mere 5.2%, one of the boomers stand to lowest rates in the world. And those inherit an insane $750 seniors are now living well past eighty, billion over the next with chronic health issues that are ten years...” increasing the $220 billion national medical bill exponentially. No, the vast majority of seniors can manage quite well without the generous government discounts, thank you very much. It’s not as if the various levels of government couldn’t use the cash infusion if these perks were eliminated. Schools are closing, our roads are abysmal, bridges falling down, vast wilderness areas are being patrolled by one guy in a pick-up. Nevertheless, nobody dares touch the senior citizen holy grail. No elected official would be so suicidal as to suggest government withdraw perks from the very demographic that put their butts in office in the first place. The ones that could really use a leg up are the ‘young adults’ aged 20 to 29. An astounding 43% are still living at home with Mom and Dad, many with a massive student loan, many working in McJobs. And if they are not living in their parent’s basement, they may well be living rough - 20% of the homeless in Canada are aged 16 - 24. Hell defined. Time to take a hard look at who gets the breaks. The single mom ferrying across to clean senior citizens’ houses for $12.00 an hour, while that senior sitting in the ferry seat beside her pays a half price fare? There must be a better way.

From the Inside Out

interview with a ten-year-old about big feelings PART TWO: In part one of this interview (July, 2016 Fishbowl) our ten-year-old told us how it felt to have a (self-professed) temper tantrum. We continue our interview here. ammaLisa: Are you aware of feelings building up inside before you have a tantrum? ten-year-old: Um, well sometimes… every time mum gets mad at me, it feels like I’m getting mad, and after about ten times, um… I can feel that weight going on top, and on top, and on top, till it’s going way up high and I’m going to explode. ammaLisa: Wow. You told me one thing that helped was some drawings you’d done after a tantrum. Can you tell me about that? ten-year-old: Oh… that time mum came in and told me things to do, like go for a walk or ride your bike or stuff like that, and when I didn’t want to do them …I got annoyed. Then I chose drawing. My first drawing was scribbles all over a page and my second drawing was a rainbow with “happy” in the middle. I did the drawings in My Feelings Book.* ammaLisa: Did you get mama to write any words or did you write any words to go with the drawings? ten-year-old: No. I just wrote “happy.” And on the other I wrote “mad.” ammaLisa: Right. Cool. I love the scribble. Because scribble can be such a great expression of how we feel inside, right? ten-year-old: Yeah. And sometimes, when I’m feeling happy I do, like, happy colours of scribbling. ammaLisa: Oh nice! So what are “happy colours?” ten-year-old: Well, usually mad colours are red and black…. and happy colours, I’d say, are your favourite colours. Note: *My Feelings Book is a singing amma creation specially designed for kids to get their feelings out on paper - a very effective way for children to process big feelings. Get your copy at www.thesingingamma.com or simply supply your child with paper and colouring tools – crayons, felt pens, pencil crayons. Let them choose which tools they feel like using and which colours. In a pinch, simply give them a pen and any scrap of paper. Let them know “When you are done screaming you could draw your feelings out. Then I could write the words that go with your picture if you want.” Follow through with writing verbatim what they have to say – it can be empowering and validating just to be heard and acknowledged. Remember: all feelings are acceptable. ammaLisa: Is there anything else you’d like to tell parents about when their tweens have meltdowns? ten-year-old: Yes! have a really good book and it’s called A Touch, a Kiss and a Hold (by Linda K. Leavitt). There’s a grandma who yelled at mommy, then mommy yells at me but then when I grow up and become a mum I’ve learned. And I don’t yell. Because I know that’s not ok. I know how it felt. Send your parenting questions to: the.singing.amma@gmail.com or www.facebook.com/thesingingamma Could a private session with the singing amma be helpful for you and your family? email: lisasigurgeirsonmaxx@gmail.com to book yours today!

kind ACT ON WHAT MATTERS

paws with Sean Hogan

In view of recent happenings in the world that brought more darkness to our lives, it dawned on me that now is a good time to shine brighter and inspire others to do the same. A quote by Margaret Mead is an encouraging reminder. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” A call to action for activists of every type, we who stand up for the weak, speak for those who cannot, offer dignity when there is hopelessness, Mead’s words have rallied many humans across the world to come together and take a stand. “What is at stake?” becomes the rallying question. Our actions may be small or large, subtle or dramatic, somber or enthusiastic. It only matters that we act. Doing so is a way of honouring our commitment to what matters to us. People and animals matter to me. I happen to share this value with a small group of thoughtful and dedicated Salt Springers. Together, we rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome approximately 150 cats a year in our small 700 sq ft shelter. We help dogs, too, by reuniting lost ones with their owners, through emergency fostering, and at our popular Doggie Daycare at the Saturday Market. It matters to us enough that volunteers gave over 6,500 hours last year to our mission. When I reflect on the many animals’ lives saved, improved through well-matched adoptions, and learned from when faced with dark problems to solve, I recognize the courage needed to do this work. Lives are at stake and there is an “It only matters that apparent endless lineup of lost, sick, we act. Doing so is a and injured animals who need our way of honouring our assistance in one way or another. commitment to what Through fundraising, we work together to improve lives for animals matters to us.” and people. Our 100% non-profit organization does it’s work only with the generous money and time people give to our mission. Help comes in many forms from handson service for the animals in our care, fostering orphaned kittens, and counting Save-A-Tape receipts. When kids have Twoonie Birthday parties or bake sales, when businesses host our coin boxes and give to our gift baskets, and when people attend our events with enthusiasm, together we make a difference. Two events in August will give you a chance to come have some fun as well as contribute to our cause. Surely this pawsitivity puts some much-needed good energy back into the world! At ArtSpring August 5, 6, 7 the pre-show and intermission concession for the play The Grand Illusion will be a by-donation fundraiser for the local SPCA. On Monday, August 8th at the Salt Spring Public Library, join us for our 2nd Annual Just for Cats Film Festival. Tickets are $5 and $10, shows at 3:30 and 7pm. We will have popcorn and drinks, SPCA merchandise, and representatives from Petsecure Pet Insurance who are sponsoring the festival.

My Food Matters

by CHEF KEN BRUDNER

GMO...OMG!!

I’m not a scientist, a worker in a food manufacturing plant, a doctor or an expert in food engineering. But, one thing I think I have is basic common sense. When we consider, if at all, the changes in our food system in the last 20 years, we tend to accept and blame changing times and the generations that pass who by very nature, establish new trends and ideas that change Man’s very existence. But often we do not realize that in any life situation the basic fundamentals of energy that nature provided cannot be altered if it is going to remain the same as it has been forever. If there is anything that can be incredibly simple and complex at the same time, it would have to be a seed. Do we all consider what actually happens from seed to fruit and back to seed and then realize how amazing that perfect system is? Well, how could we, when we are allowing for that perfect system to be compromised by food engineers that are paid huge salaries to expedite positive results to maintain a genetically modified way of eating. Already, it has stormed its way to centre stage of our food globe. Like anything, we tend to accept what is offered and is on the shelf without a thought if it has a label, a brand name and nice colors to the packaging. Most of us took marketing in high school. We learned of the power it can have and how it could make or break a company. Every single person on this planet needs food. Be sure to know that the marketing skills of the most proficient are being sought out and hired to help reach the goals of certain food manufacturers like Monsanto. GMO’s are everywhere. Please note that anything that has soy, corn or canola that is not organic will be a GMO product. Those sunflower seeds in those little packages that were roasted with canola oil, or corn starch in cookies or corn syrup in chocolate bars, tofu in your miso soup and soya sauce for your sushi all are a GMO product if they are not organic. I only have 500 words for this column so, if you can and even if you have little interest at this time, gather some information about the cons of GMO technology that is changing what and the way we are eating. If you care to look for pros of this industry, please keep in mind the source and the billions of dollars that have been made so far. These devilish companies don’t want that to change. Sadly, Canada has now approved GMO salmon. This is a major step for the biotechnology industry and many steps back for proponents of a natural system. Despite the power and the seemingly carte blanche opportunities these companies have, our biggest vote is at the cash register. Let us demand what is supplied.

August 26-28th at the Fulford Ball fields Tony Head played Slo-Pitch like it was a religion! He very much loved the game. He saw it as an opportunity for everyone to get together with their kids and have some fun on weekends throughout the summer. Tragically Tony perished in a highly publicized fishing boat accident which also claimed the lives of 4 other family members in 2002. “It devastated us. Through this time, our Island joined together to mourn the beautiful soul he was” recalls Danielle Head, Tony’s eldest daughter. At the time of his death, he was a Lieutenant at the Salt Spring Fire Dept., a fisherman, carpenter, father, friend and most of all- a big kid at heart. “He was well known in our tight-knit community”. Tony Head was born on Salt Spring Island in August of 1969 and spent many of his adolescent years between the Island and Galiano where his family was based. Danielle and her young family now have the privilege of playing on the same fields her dad once did. For the past 13 years, the local Slo-pitch association has dedicated their year-end tournament to Tony and the family. The family now wishes to continue to honour him in an even more special way. This year marks the first year where the family has created an Invitational Tournament. Teams from the Salt Spring league as well as Galiano and Victoria leagues will be joining in on the fun. “We want to open our arms to the public, those who knew Dad and would like to welcome them to come down and catch up with his Family and old friends,” says Danielle The 13th annual, 1st Invitational Tournament will see partial proceeds go right back into the Salt Spring community. “Two things Dad loved were his Kids and Community” Danielle now works for Island Savings, which just launched a new fundraising initiative called The Full Cupboard. The program’s goal is to ensure no Island child goes hungry. “We’ve discovered startling facts about childhood hunger and who relies on a food bank”. This year the tournament will be partnering with Island Savings’ The Full Cupboard by raising funds that will go to supporting the Salt Spring Island food bank. The tournament runs Aug 26-28 2016 at the Fulford Ball Fields. For more information or to get involved, sponsor or volunteer please contact Danielle Head at tonyheadmemorial@gmail.com Or www.tonyheadmemorial.com for more info.

NATURAL HEALTH NOTES with DR. PATRICK CALLAS

Depressed, Anxious, Fatigued or Overweight? Your Thyroid May Be Low Your metabolism is the speed and efficiency of which all the processes of your body run. If you are fatigued, constantly cold, losing muscle mass, overweight or feeling depressed, then your metabolism is slow. A master switch to turning up your metabolism is your thyroid. Many North Americans have low functioning thyroids. Standard lab tests for thyroid function are inadequate and their inaccuracy is contributing to an epidemic of untreated low thyroid. Disorders of Low Thyroid Function Low thyroid function can cause anxiety, panic disorders, mental dullness, low sex drive, sexual dysfunction, fibromyalgia, obesity, swelling, carpal tunnel syndrome, and some forms of headaches including migraines. Also irritable bowel syndrome can be aggravated by low thyroid. One study showed that 75% of women with PMS actually had subclinical hypothyroid and that 60% of these women had complete resolution of their PMS with thyroid medication treatment. The Best Way To Test Your Thyroid The best way to test if your thyroid is suboptimal is by doing these two simple things: • Request a Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) blood test from your Naturopathic Doctor or family doctor. • Measure your oral temperature with a thermometer. Use a glass thermometer. Most digital thermometers unreliable. Take your temperature by placing your glass thermometer under your tongue just like your mom did when you were little. Measure your temperature 3 hours after waking and then every 3 hours for 3 days. For women who are menstruating, do not record your temperatures 3 days before menstruating because your temperature will be higher then. Average all of your temperature readings and see how you compare to normal body temperature. Normal body temperature measured orally is 37˚C. If your average temperature is below 37˚C, especially more than 1˚C below, and you are experiencing any low thyroid symptoms, then your thyroid could benefit from a reboot. Different Names for Low Thyroid Function A low functioning thyroid that causes you symptoms and that is not found on standard lab tests is called subclinical hypothyroidism, sub-laboratory hypothyroidism, or Wilson’s Temperature Syndrome. In other words, your thyroid may be under-functioning and causing you problems, but it does not currently fall under the medical category of Hypothyroid. Brrrrr It’s Cold In Here Low thyroid slows everything in your body down. Many people experience feeling cold – colder than most other people in the room. A slowed body feels more fatigued, lower mood, and more pain. A slowed body experiences poor digestion, weight gain, swelling and more. Is it time to turn up your metabolism? A healthy functioning thyroid can make you feel happier, healthier, younger, and more like yourself. If your thyroid has been low for a long time, you may not even realize how low you are actually feeling. For more information about your Thyroid health or any other health questions, call me at 250-537-0035, write me at islandnaturalhealth@gmail.com or message me on FaceBook page DrPatrickCallas.

artcraft August at Artcraft. The month starts off with a new showcase on the stage: “Life.Forms” with paintings by Chintan Bolliger and basketry forms by Donna Cochran. It is a dramatic meeting of worlds and other worlds; with expressive, abstract and fantastical paintings revolving around a giant, three dimensioned planet. “Life.Forms” runs until August 24th on the stage at Mahon hall. Two days later the final showcase of the summer will take its place, when Leslie Corry recreates the geographic and cultural landscape of Eastend in Saskatchewan. Corry evokes the spirit of the animals and people who have survived and thrived in this unique area, with sculptural pieces and a series of prints. Her show will run until Artcraft closes on September 18th. Outside the hall the 2016 Landart series will be up all August, with distinctive, thoughtful and exciting outdoor installations by Diana Lynn Thompson, Paul Burke, Melanie Thompson and Laura Keil. With one of the Art Pianos on site, the coffee can and nearby food carts Mahon hall is a busy and attractive place to hang out. Artcraft continues inside with 100 artists from Salt Spring and the other southern Gulf Islands. Now in its 48th season it is getting reviews describing it as “better than ever”

Yoga

Sitting. Is it really the new smoking? Yes. Spending less time sitting down really can add years to your life. All in all, we sit too much! We are meant to move! In her book “Don’t Just Sit There” Katy Bowman, one of the world’s leading bio-mechanists, talks about the difference between “static” vs “dynamic” sitting and standing. Staying in one position too long will create problems in the body. If you don’t have awareness of how you are holding your body, problems will arise, whether you are at a sitting, or a standing work-station. One would think that going to a yoga or exercise class, the gym or for a run every day would counteract the ill effects of hours of inactivity. Exercise is certainly a step toward reducing our sedentarism, but it is not enough to counteract the ill effects of the sedentary lifestyle. Katy says we need more “movement” not just “exercise”. If you look at a 24-hour period, a daily 30-90 minute class or workout will only amount to 3-6% of your time. Katy refers to this as being “sedentary” and “active”. Katy talks about the importance of the 3 MMM’s to help us bring more “movement” into our day. Micro-movement, Mini-movement, and Macro-movement. • Micro-movements can be done standing or sitting. Try shifting your weight from foot to foot; step back, or forward, with one foot and stretch the heel; wriggle your toes; roll your shoulders or gently swing your hips from side to side. Also, be as tall as possible keeping the spine elongated, but not stiff. You can wriggle and move through the spine as you sit or stand. Wriggle and move like a cat! Be “in” your body! Feel it! Micro-move it! All day! • Mini-movements. Every 30 minutes take a 3-minute walk or stretch or other miniworkout. This will increase your movement time by 48 minutes in an 8 hour work day. This does not substitute a Macro-movement workout. See below. • Macro-movements. Include a 30 minute (minimum) workout. Such as yoga, Pilates, jogging, walking, gym, etc., every day. Yes, every day. Other ways to increase movement: Walking or riding your bike as much as possible instead of driving; working in the garden; using the stairs instead of elevators are ways that you can bring more movement into your life. Legs up the wall is a great way to reverse the flow of energy in the body. It doesn’t have to be hard, and it doesn’t always need to be “exercise”; just move! Not moving has resulted in self-induced joint-rigidity in many people. When we keep moving we tone muscle, keep connective tissues moist and supple, and blood oxygen flowing evenly, to all areas of the body. Yoga takes you through a full range of movements. A select number of yoga postures could be used for one of your Mini-movement options; and a full yoga class for one of your Macro-movement options. You can do it... whenever you are ready. See you on the mat! ~ Dorothy Dorothy teaches yoga classes, pranayama, meditation & retreats locally & worldwide. Visit www.santosha-yoga-retreats.com or phone 250-537-7675

A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab Ahhh…time for summer reads, and I am so very happy about it. It is the best feeling in the world to put your feet up, have a glass of something cold, and dive into a new book, whilst sitting in the sun. My most recent read was the very engaging “A Darker Shade of Magic” by V.E. Schwab. Predictably, it was the cover that drew me in. It has been popping up all over Bookstagram for quite some time, seemed to be well reviewed and I was so certain that I would love it that I even used my precious birthday (bookstore) gift card to purchase it. I was not disappointed. Fantasy can be an escapist genre, but I mostly enjoy it because I love the idea that someone out there is dreaming up these incredibly complex, unique worlds. It never ceases to amaze me that every time I discover an author who is proposing something unusual, they also manage to make it so believable and captivating.

In “A Darker Shade of Magic” there are four Londons. Yes, you heard that right, four Londons. Each one is recognizable by the colour attributed to it; Red London, White London, Grey “It never ceases to amaze London, and the mysterious me that every time I Black London. This colour discover an author who scheme obviously accounts is proposing something for the inspiration behind unusual, they also manage the delightful cover art, and to make it so believable it’s really a brilliant concept. and captivating.” The parallel Londons have an ambassador, Kell. He is a rare magician type who is able to travel between worlds, officially sharing communications between the royalty of each London and unofficially conducting his own business, as dangerous as that appears to be. In Grey London (which is really our London, back in the time of Mad King George) he meets a wanted thief, cutpurse and all around adventuress, Delilah Bard. Lila is a dynamic character and she explodes into Kell’s story arc like a firecracker. The way these two play off of each other makes for a very compelling read. This is a tale of politics and power. Of magic and control. There are many layers to this story, and each is as delightful as the last. Luckily for me, and for anyone else who enjoys this book, author V.E. Schwab has just recently completed the second book in this series, “A Gathering of Shadows”. Just bring on the sun, I’m ready for my next summer read!

20th Annual Salt Spring

TOY RUN Come out & join us for a weekend of fun! August 26 – 28th

Our mission is to RAISE MONEY & DONATE TOYS TO LOCAL FAMILIES IN NEED. This is a 100% volunteer run event, with something for everyone to enjoy, so whether you are a rider, passenger or spectator, there is something for everyone. From cheering on the bikes along the parade route, participating in the motorcycle games, socializing, visiting local onsite food vendors, kicking back in the ice cold beverage garden, enjoying a wonderful dinner or dancing the night away, this weekend will keep you smiling and having fun! The event has evolved from a handful of motorcycles taking a ride around the island and culminating with a family BBQ at the Irwin home, to over 100 local and visiting motorcycles touring the island and enjoying a weekend packed full of fun. This year we have a Silent Auction with donations from local Artists, Craftspeople & Retailers. We are proud to be featuring two of Salt Spring’s finest bands: Friday night, Soul Shakedown will be playing in the orchard and Saturday night, Happy Daze, will take to the main stage after an amazing dinner, catered on site. There is no admission to the grounds, however, we encourage everyone to bring a new, unwrapped toy, gift card or cash donation and all are welcome to come out and join us for a weekend of fun at the Farmer’s Institute. All proceeds help our local families, with the aid of Santa’s Workshop.

ENVIRONMENTAL CORNER

REDUCE YOUR PERSONAL CARBON FOOT-PRINT Going green isn’t as tough as you think. Slowly make the switch by making one easy change each month of the year. If we all do it, these simple changes will make a big impact!” 1. Take your own mug to the coffee shop. We all know this. Try to remember. 2. Turn your computer and monitor off at the end of the day. Your computer may go to sleep, but it’s still sucking up energy. 3. Save paper. Pay as many bills on-line as possible 4. Use cloth napkins instead of paper napkins at dinner. 5. Share your magazines — read them then pass them on. 6. Swap your household cleaners. You will be surprised how much cleaning you can do with vinegar, dish soap and baking soda. 7. Go meatless one or two days a week and cut down on portions. 8. Buy household plants such as Aloe Vera, Areca Palm, Boston Fern & Spider Plants to help clear the three main household toxins: benzene, formaldehyde & trichloroethylene. 9. Skip the bottled water. Use a water filter to purify tap water instead of buying bottled water. Not only is bottled water expensive, but it generates large amounts of container waste. 10. Buy rechargeable batteries. Learn to dispose of old batteries properly 11. Repair your leaky faucet (especially if you live in a drought-prone area), install water-saving toilets and shower heads, and only run the clothes washer or dishwasher with full loads. 12. Switch to chemical-free cleaning products or make your own eco-friendly cleaning products.
