Dear Friends of First Tee,
IT IS TIME TO REFLECT on another historic year for First Tee — Greater Philadelphia and the many ways we have made an impact on the lives of our students. Our staff has continued to excel and grow our programs, but we know our work has only just begun.
Fortune seems to be on our side as a direct result of the endless support from those who care about our young people and our mission. This year, we served over 45,000 young people through numerous programs at 21 green grass locations and 105 schools and youth service organizations. We hosted over 145 visits to the golf courses and saw over 4,300 students in the process. Not only have we continued to build and foster our Caddie Academy and PGA Jr. League Teams, but we have also added more exciting opportunities to the lineup. Additionally, some of our students have received scholarships to prestigious schools and are excelling both in the classroom and socially.
As you flip through these pages, please take the time to read about what we do, but, most importantly, look at the smiles and joy that can only be provided through the generosity of donors and friends like yourselves. We have always operated with the principle that, “Young people don’t care what you know, until they know that you care.” We will continue to create safe spaces for our young people to call home and we will continue Building Game Changers. If you have not visited our new and improved John F. Byrne Golf Club in Northeast Philadelphia, we encourage you to stop by and see our facilities! The newly renovated clubhouse opened in April and will continue to serve as a safe haven for our kids and community.
2023 marks First Tee — Greater Philadelphia’s 20th Anniversary. Those who founded the Greater Philadelphia Scholastic Golf Association 42 years ago, would be so proud to see the incredible growth and intentional impact we have made over these 20 years. We look forward to seeing you at our Leaders & Achievers Gala on November 30th at the National Constitution Center. It will be a great night to celebrate the first 20 years and kick off the next 20 years.

From
Brian Medley, 2022 Coach of the Year:
“Having been in the business of education for over 30 years, I was very intrigued when the opportunity to join the First Tee family arose. Knowing that the organization’s foundation is built on molding young lives by focusing on the values and belief systems that make young people successful, I was elated when I met Rebecca Kelly and was invited to join the group as a coach.
My experience as a first-year coach has been nothing short of amazing. Each season brought new faces and new personalities. I was able to connect with a diverse group of youth ages 7-17 (and their families) who all brought a hunger and thirst to learn the game of golf. More importantly, these young people wanted to engage with other youth to share experiences based on the character education discussions we had even BEFORE we picked up a club to practice the game.
I am so looking forward to another rewarding year in 2023 and can’t wait to continue to inspire young people and mold them into Game Changers not only in golf, but also in life.”

“
I know you have my kids’ best interests at heart. I can’t thank you enough from the bottom of my heart. It keeps me sane and blessed to be able to be part of a program that helps me develop my children physically, mentally, and emotionally.” - First Tee Parent

Our coaches are fully committed to mentoring our young people. They are the reason why we are able to create safe spaces where our young people can learn and thrive. Above, Coach Kyla, 17, is seen handing a participant her scorecard at this year’s Drive, Chip & Putt contest.
Youth Day
On April 30th, PGA WORKS, in partnership with the local PGA Philadelphia Section, hosted Youth Day at Union League Liberty Hill. Over 100 young people, many of whom are First Tee participants, loaded onto a bus at Walnut Lane Golf Club and traveled down Henry Avenue to Liberty Hill’s practice facility for a day of fun. Youth Day was just the start of many activities during the week-long PGA Works Collegiate Championship, hosted at both Liberty Hill and The Union League Golf Club at Torresdale by The Union League of Philadelphia.
PGA Professionals from across the section provided instruction regarding golf, life, and career skills at Youth Day. Surprise visits from Gritty and the Phillie Phanatic resulted in many smiles and a little fun too. The day ended with a Q&A run by our good friend, and the CEO of Junior Golf, Gavin Parker, PGA, and Joanna Coe, PGA, Director of Instruction at Merion Golf Club.

Caddie Academy
“My name is Andi Jones. I am 15 years old and I am a Freshman at Cheltenham High School. I started caddying in the summer at Huntingdon Valley Country Club. Before I caddied, I didn’t think I would see many other girls caddying, but during my third or fourth time on the course, I was in a group of all-girl caddies. That inspired me to improve myself every time I went out. Before I caddied, I was also a little nervous, but everyone was incredibly nice and supported me when I was starting out.
When caddying at Huntingdon Valley, I am in a positive environment that allows me to learn valuable lessons, which I use in every part of my life. For example, skills I have improved include communication and responsibility. Communication is a versatile skill and I know I will need it with whatever venture I end up doing. I meet new people every time I caddie. I need to be able to talk and communicate with my player, when needed, or if I have a question I need to ask. Caddying has also taught me how to be more responsible, as well as learn from my mistakes. It has helped me mature and grow into an accountable person. The lessons I have learned I apply to my life now, like during school and other activities. In October, I had the great honor of speaking at the J. Wood Platt Scholarship Outing. That was very exciting! J. Wood Platt helps girls get into caddying and gives out scholarships for girl caddies for school and that’s what I spoke about.
I am grateful that I was able to caddie and have the experiences to help make me a better person. Caddying has been great and I can’t wait to do it for many more years to come.”

We thank Llanerch Country Club for hosting The Match! Raising over $100,000 in support of both J. Wood Platt Scholarship Trust and First Tee, The Match provided a fun day on the course for our young people as both caddies and standard bearers!

April 2nd was a beautiful day in the Greater Philadelphia area, not only because of the weather, but also because we celebrated the Grand Opening of a PGA TOUR Superstore in Plymouth Meeting. Because of our incredible partnership our young people and staff were invited to the Grand Opening for a check presentation.
In addition, the PGA TOUR Superstore is now a program location hosting classes weekly. They will provide funding, similar to this year’s $25,000 Teen Retention Grant, to bolster programming and engagement for our older participants.
Educational Endowment
In 2022, we launched our Educational Endowment Scholarship Program. This initiative allows us to better support our youth in their schooling. We awarded nearly $16,000 to four of our young people in their secondary education endeavors. Students receiving scholarships attend the following schools:

Giving young golfers the chance to compete and take their game to the next level has been a part of our mission from the beginning. Our goal, in partnership with First Tee, is to give kids a chance to play at great facilities and compete in exciting tournaments. We are providing the resources needed to improve their game and confidence, all while giving them the opportunity to network, make new connections, and build friendships. We are working to ensure that the scholarship continues to grow.”
– Courtney Curcio, PGA REACH Philadelphia Director
Pro-Junior Qualifier & Championship
The Philadelphia PGA Section hosts a Pro-Junior Championship each year where PGA Professionals across the area come together with a team of juniors to compete. This year, Coaches Anthony and Rocco represented First Tee — Greater Philadelphia with two teams of individuals who qualified to participate in the event. The Pro-Junior Championship took place at Bellewood Country Club in July.
Par 3 Family Shoot Out
A new program location this year, Bridge Street Golf at Snipes Farm hosted the Par 3 Family Shoot Out. Twelve families, with a grand total of 57 people, registered to partake in the first-ever event of its kind in August.
First Tee Championship
A two-day event, this inaugural tournament took place at both Walnut Lane and John F. Byrne in a late September. Paired with a Drive, Chip & Putt Competition, 91 students showed up to take on the links and show their skills. A 27-hole event for those 14 and up and an 18-hole event for those 13 and younger, this event allowed our young people to put their on-course skills to the test.
Jr./Sr. Tournaments
Staples to the tournament rotation each year, the Jr./Sr. Tournaments blew participation out of the water. Overflowing events took place at Walnut Lane and John F. Byrne at the end of October and beginning of November, respectively.

In the Community
Bridging the gap between the classroom or the youthserving space and the golf course is how we grow the game. Walnut Lane Golf Club and John F. Byrne Golf Club host numerous field trips per year exposing thousands of students to the game of golf and all it has to offer.
Outreach is one of the single most important parts of First Tee – Greater Philadelphia, because it shows we are committed to strengthening our community. Growing up in Philadelphia, I recognize the challenges young people face daily, which is why it is so important for me to continue to bridge the gap between our future Game Changers and First Tee.”

Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School is The School that Works. Each week, during the school year, 12 CRPHS students join us at First Tee to learn the ins and outs of our business. These young people work alongside our staff completing tasks and learning skills that complement the education they’re receiving and will better prepare them for college and the workforce beyond.
Our relationship with First Tee is truly a partnership. We both share the same philosophy of HIGH EXPECTATIONS AND HIGH SUPPORT and challenge our students to bring their best every day. The entire team at First Tee truly engages our students in their business and helps to instill the core values we both share.”

Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School Partnership
“Hi! My name is Samirah and I go to Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School. I work at First Tee — Greater Philadelphia for my Work Study Program.
I chose to work at First Tee because I wanted to gain experience playing golf and getting to know more about the golf industry. First Tee is a great opportunity for me to get into golf and learn how things work around the game. First Tee is the best job I have had through my high school years and I hope that I get more chances to work here my Junior and Senior year. I really love working at First Tee, because it gives me the community and work family that I need and I love the fact that I can receive that love here. I also love it here, because the staff gives me the support I need when I am having a difficult time understanding something or just need some encouragement.
While here, I get to play golf, ride in golf carts, and help send out thank you notes to people who have donated to First Tee. I also get to go to events that we have and meet people who support the cause. I have attended a lunch meeting at The Union League and visited a clothing company. I also met Mike Quick and was able to take a picture with him - that was the best day of my life, because I had an awesome conversation with him. First Tee takes me to events that benefit me in life and my future and it also shows me what different jobs I can have or have an interest in. The staff shows me that I can have my own job as an entrepreneur or work for people that have opportunities for me in the future.
First Tee gives me the courage and the positive attitude I need for different work spaces outside of school.”

National Opportunities
Throughout the year, First Tee hosts National Opportunities for teens all over the country. These opportunities range from an academy focusing on discussions surrounding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, to a college scholarship program, to playing Pebble Beach Golf Links with a PGA Tour Champions player. These events give our young people the chance to travel the nation, make friends with participants from other chapters, and meet mentors who will advocate for them for the rest of their lives.
A few First Tee chapters also host events to which our students travel, giving them additional opportunities to grow their skills, meet new people, and experience new places and things!

At First Tee – Greater Philadelphia
, we operate two golf courses within the City of Philadelphia limits. In partnership with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, we are able to provide the game of golf in an affordable, accessible, and welcoming manner. Walnut Lane Golf Club is situated in the Roxborough section of Philadelphia on the Northwestern side of the city and John F. Byrne Golf Club is located in Northeast Philadelphia. Both of our golf courses provide manageable tracks for our young people to learn on and for the public to call home.
“The Eagle project is the culmination of years of camping, community service, and earning badges that teach valuable skills, sharing many values with First Tee. With the 25 volunteers I supervised, I put in a foundation and installed a large shed at Walnut Lane. We also hung signs directing hikers safely through the golf course to the trails on the Wissahickon Trail. I chose this project because I wanted to give something back to an organization that has helped me mature. Doing my Eagle project at First Tee was a great way to bring together the two most important activities in my life.
How did I get here? When I was six, I signed up for the local First Tee program and the doors opened to a lot of adventures. I got to play on the First Tee PGA Jr. League team in middle school, led by Coach Anthony. This experience helped me earn a spot on my high school golf team. First Tee also introduced me to the world of caddying, recommending me to the Sankaty Head Caddy Camp on Nantucket.
I’ve been offered so many impactful opportunities over my 18 years, and many of them are thanks to First Tee.”

“What John F. Byrne means to me is entirely too much to put into words, but I’ll try.
John F. Byrne has taught me more than just how to play golf. I mean this with my entire heart.
If I had the chance to play golf at any course on planet earth, I would choose John F. Byrne. It’s managed by the greatest staff I have ever spoken to. They are so welcoming and helped make me who I am today. I’ve learned things like etiquette from Coach Johnnie. Coaches Rocco and Anthony have worked on making adjustments to my swing (and my Ping Pong game). Maggie and Rebecca always have a smile to share. I’ve spent lots of time in the simulator that lets me work on my game no matter what the weather is like outside. I’ve also made friends and had tons of fun helping to clean golf carts. Being at John F. Byrne is the best part of my day.”

Mike Quick Celebrity Invitational presented by
Each May, we gather at The Union League Golf Club at Torresdale for the Mike Quick Celebrity Invitational. Featuring an all-star cast this year, Dr. J, Jason Kelce, Brandon Graham and more hit the links with our young people as their caddies for the event. The event raised over $195,000, with Jacobs Telecommunications graciously providing the title sponsorship for the day. After golf, attendees traveled across the street, yet again, to visit our brand new facility at John F. Byrne Golf Club!
Auction for Game Changers
Our second Auction for Game Changers was off to a running start. We raised over $240,000 for our programs and young people. Taking place from February 3 - February 13, experiences featured Secession Golf Club, Calusa Pines Golf Club, and so many more. A Pebble Beach Raffle was featured for the first time in First Tee — Greater Philadelphia history.
3-Club Challenge
Taking place on the Thursday of The Masters each year, the Advisory Board gets together to celebrate all that we do. This year, the $9,000 raised benefited our programs at Pennsauken Country Club. While the weather didn’t cooperate, The Masters Watch Party took place at Walnut Lane Golf Club, and guests enjoyed a rainy day watching amongst friends.
Roast & Toast honoring Michael J. Brown
Raising over $1 million, we celebrated Board President Michael Brown’s 60th Birthday in May at Walnut Lane Golf Club and Union League Liberty Hill.
Advisory Board Glow Golf
The Advisory Board introduced a new event to their lineup this year by hosting Glow Golf at John F. Byrne in October. Eighteen teams traveled to the Northeast at dusk to take on the links with Glow Golf Equipment and their sticks, raising nearly $9,000 to support our programs.

Over $1 million raised!
First Tee Invitational
presented by In 2022, First Tee — Greater Philadelphia celebrated our 20th Annual First Tee Invitational. Hosted on the same property since 2002, CHUBB continued to lead the charge with sponsorships for the event. Two full shotguns of golfers took to the golf course to support First Tee and learn more about our mission, raising $275,000.
Girls Golf Tea Time Tournament & Fashion Show
Another successful day of celebrating our young women took place in early August at The Union League Golf Club at Torresdale. Temple Women’s Basketball Coach Diane Richardson joined us as the keynote speaker for the afternoon. She inspired our young women to continue to say YES to things that allow them to grow, learn, and positively impact those around them. The event raised over $26,000 in support of our Girls Golf programming.

Inside Golf
Being a part of First Tee brought me out of many situations that I never thought I would persevere through! Coaching kids made me feel more connected to First Tee than ever before and it also expanded my knowledge in the collegiate golfing world. I am proud to say I have broken many barriers thanks to First Tee!” - Dakota Baker, Paine College
We have always had a great partnership with our friends at InsideGolf TV Showcasing our mission and our impact, Harry Donahue and Ken Selinger have been documenting all things Golf in the Greater Philadelphia area for years.
