FIRST STAGE THEATER ACADEMY IS THE NATION’S LARGEST HIGH-IMPACT THEATER TRAINING PROGRAM FOR YOUNG PEOPLE Dear Families, Theater training is more than learning skills to perform on a stage; it’s a transformative journey that equips you with life skills, where creativity becomes your compass, empathy your script, and resilience your standing ovation. For more than 30 years, the classes within the First Stage Theater Academy meet students where they are and offer an experience unlike any other. Our philosophy is teaching life skills through stage skills throughout all our course offerings. Our professional Teaching Artists create a safe, positive learning environment that allow for students to take risks and conquer fears all while being fully supported. We believe that theater training for young people is where the imagination takes the spotlight, has the power to ignite minds, touch hearts, and change the world. We hope you can join us this summer! NEW STUDENT ORIENTATIONS GRADES K5–12
These open house orientations allow new families to learn more about the program structure and policies, ask questions, and get a glimpse into the classroom content!
REQUIRED FOR NEW STUDENTS
• Attending one orientation session is required for new students. A parent or guardian should also attend.
• Indicate the orientation you plan to attend on the registration form. ORIENTATION DATES: June 5, 2024 | 6:00-7:00PM June 8, 2024 | 10:00-11:00AM LOCATION: All orientations will take place at the Milwaukee Youth Arts Center.
PRESENTATIONS
Every Summer Academy session will culminate in a lively presentation of class work for family and friends. One, two, three, and four week classes will hold presentations on the final class day. Details will be noted in the welcome letter you will receive a week prior to your class starting.
EXTENDED CARE
Extended Care is designed to help busy working parents. This program offers students an opportunity to participate in games, memorize lines, practice scene work, meet new friends, or just hang out. Extended Care will be available Monday through Friday at the Milwaukee Youth Arts Center location only. • Morning (Grades K-4): 8:00-9:00AM at $50 per week
• Morning (Grades 5-12): 8:00-8:30AM at $25 per week
• Afternoon (Grades K-12): Class end time to 5:30PM at $50 per week If you would like to enroll your student in Extended Care please select the option on the registration form. If your student registers for both morning and afternoon care, the cost is $90 per week. LATE FEES Students who are picked up after 4:30PM will be placed in extended care as a safety precaution. Students are not allowed to wait outside unattended. Should you ever be running late to pick up your students, always notify the Academy Office. The first time you are late to pick up your student, you will be given notice. All following instances will result in a $20 late fee. If your child is not signed up for extended care and you pick them up late during extended care two or more times, you will be charged the full extended care amount. 4
ACADEMY CURRICULUM
Our exciting acting curriculum varies in intensity with age, experience, and length of session. Acting is at the core of everything we teach and it takes a lifetime to master. STORY DRAMA Bring a storybook to life through exploring motivations, choices, and actions while creating dialogue and improvising scenes. PLAYMAKERS Use improvisation and theater games to create a story and develop your own theatrical masterpiece. CREATIVE DRAMA Imagine, enact, and reflect upon improvised situations. Through this process, students come to understand theater, themselves, and the world around them.
ACTING THEORY Explore character, relationships, action, and text while developing overall acting skills and confidence. VOICE & MOVEMENT Build strength, flexibility, awareness, and expression through a class devoted to the fundamentals of two of the actor’s most important tools. MUSICAL THEATER Increase your versatility and work on new vocal and dance techniques while exploring the art of telling a story through words, music, and movement. SHAKESPEARE Examine dynamic language, characters, and plots in scenes and monologues from one of the most influential playwrights in history. IMPROVISATION Develop expressiveness, spontaneity, and train your brain to think quickly and with reason through improvisational character and scene work. PLAYWRITING & DESIGN Develop storytelling skills and learn the art of bringing stories to the stage through creative design. COMPANY CLASS Work with a professional director to broaden performance skills, deepen knowledge of theater, and produce a show. 5

INTERNSHIPS Have you taken a First Stage Theater Academy class before? Do you see yourself as a mentor? Do you want to put your office skills to the test? Are you in 8th grade or higher? If you answered yes to any of these questions, the First Stage Theater Academy Internship program is for you! CLASSROOM INTERNS: Interns serve as role model, guide, mentor, and teacher’s assistant. Once classes begin, teachers and students count on our interns and look forward to working with them each day. OFFICE INTERNS: An intern may serve as an assistant in the Academy Office, answering the telephone, taking attendance, light customer service, making copies, filing paperwork, compiling data, delivering messages, etc. Student’s may earn tuition credit while serving as an intern. SCHOOL YEAR INTENSIVE AUDITIONS Audition for one of our School Year Intensive programs while you are taking class this summer! Extended contact hours and progressive curriculum in these multi-session classes empower each student to maximize their artistic skills as well as emphasize commitment, responsibility, critical thinking, and personal expression. Auditions will be held during lunches and details and permission forms will be sent home with students during their sessions.* School Year Intensives which run September – May include: • Advanced Acting (Grades 5-9) • Advanced Musical Theater (Grades 5-12) • Organized Chaos (Grades 7-12) • Young Company (Grades 9-12) Contact the Academy office at (414) 267-2970 for more information on these programs. * Please note that all students must re-audition each year regardless of past participation.

COMPANY CLASS FOUR WEEK SESSIONS — SERVING RETURNING STUDENTS ENTERING GRADES 9–12 IN FALL 2024 BY AUDITION ONLY Company classes will work with a professional director for four weeks to broaden performance skills, deepen knowledge of theater, and produce a show. As a member of Company class you will be expected to:
• Serve as a role model of teamwork and positive energy for all other students. • Support and encourage each other to do your best.
• Take on the additional challenge of both class work and rehearsal. • Carry the Company Class legacy of leadership, energy, discipline, focus, and joy. SIGN UP FOR AN AUDITION

• If you would like us to hold a spot in a different class should you not be accepted, please note on form. AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
1. A memorized monologue of 1-2 minutes in length, classical or
contemporary, based on which class is your first choice.
2. If you want to be considered for a musical, you will need
to prepare 32 bars also of a musical theater song, which you will sing acapella, unless it is noted that an accompanist will be provided on the audition signup.

Designed for students on the autism spectrum, Next Steps classes help students take their next steps as an artist and a person. First Stage strives to create a safe space for all students to express themselves and develop as individuals without judgment or fear of failure. Guided by our philosophy of teaching life skills through stage skills, students will experience the joy of theater arts each day with a team of teaching artists and special education professionals. CLASS SIZES: 8 students; our classroom model includes teams of lead teachers, special education professionals, and resource teachers with approximately a 2:1 student to teacher ratio. Family aides may accompany a student to class as necessary and agreed upon between the family and First Stage. HOW DO I REGISTER FOR FIRST STAGE THEATER ACADEMY? All registrations are processed on a first-come, first-served basis, accepted by mail, fax, or online at www.FirstStage.org. Please register as early as possible, as space fills quickly. Please complete all information on your registration form to ensure your registration is processed as soon as possible. WILL I RECEIVE A CONFIRMATION OF MY REGISTRATION? Confirmations are sent for the class(es) for which you have registered via email. Please read your confirmation thoroughly when you receive it. This confirmation will also list any remaining balance, which is due by Friday, May 24, 2024. Any remaining balances will be automatically charged one week prior to the class starting. IS THERE A WAITLIST FOR CLASSES THAT ARE FULL? Waitlists are established for classes that have reached the enrollment limit. Students on wait lists may be called for enrollment should a cancellation occur. While we cannot predict when or if a cancellation would occur, we encourage you to be added to our waitlists, which are created on a first-come, first-served basis. Any money received will be applied to registered classes only. Any money received for waitlisted classes will be returned. WHAT DOES MY TUITION INCLUDE, AND WHEN IS MY TUITION DUE? Tuition includes all materials and one Academy t-shirt per student. A $75 minimum deposit for Summer Academy is required with your registration. If signing up for the automatic payment method, the remaining balance will be deducted automatically on Friday, May 24, 2024. You may change the credit card payment method or submit full payment via cash or check at any time. Balances must be paid in full by Friday, May 24, 2024. If the balance is not received, we will not be able to hold your placement in the class. DO YOU OFFER REFUNDS? There is a $25 administrative fee for all refunds. Full refunds (minus the fee) are available until Friday, May 24, 2024. Students withdrawing after that date will receive a gift certificate good for one year towards future classes or tickets to our productions. No refunds or tuition credits are given after the first day of class. WHAT IF MY CHILD NEEDS TO MISS A CLASS? Due to the nature of the program, we are unable to offer make up classes. Please use good judgment about bringing your student to First Stage Theater Academy. If your student is sick or contagious, please keep them home. Parents of students who become ill during the day will be promptly notified and are expected to arrange to pick up their student immediately. Please contact the Academy office if you know in advance that your student will be absent. First Stage Theater Academy also reserves the right to send children home due to inappropriate or disrespectful behavior. CAN MY CHILD SWITCH A CLASS? If families find that they have a scheduling conflict or other emergency circumstance and need to switch their course selection, please contact the Academy office to request a change. Students will not be moved from their assigned group after the first day of class. Please be aware that switching class is contingent upon space availability in the desired class.
