unday, December 5, is the second Sunday of Advent. Another Christmas is just around the corner. I think this season is best characterized as a time of “great expectations,”(to borrow the title of the novel

by Charles Dickens).

In Advent we wait in expectation for the coming of Christ, born again each year at Christmas. And we look back, as did those first Christians, to the prophetic words of December 5 - Craig Goodrich Isaiah who encouraged the people of ancient to preach Israel with the hope and expectation of a child to be born and who would be named “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).

Of course, Jesus Christ did come into this world (and we believe he will come again!). He did not meet the expectations of some who were expecting a great and powerful ruler or king. And yet, others saw that on a deeper level Jesus did, in fact, establish the beginning of a kingdom. For Jesus showed us that God’s power or might is seen and known in humility, in righteousness and in love. Not perhaps what was expected, but what was truly needed.

What are your expectations in this Advent Season?

My hope and prayer is that God will surprise all of us and that in Jesus Christ he will once again give us not what we expect or want, but everything we need, even as we pray “Thy Kingdom come.”

We continue in the sermon series “The Power of His Name.”

Protestant missionaries, who first arrived in Korea in the 1880s, were active at a time of cultural and spiritual crisis. This exhibition presents a sampling of the photographic record of that time, particularly the period prior to the Second World War. The photographs reveals Koreans’ fascination with these foreigners and the essential role of missionaries as spiritual mentors and teachers. The Friday morning panel on Christianity in Korea includes Reverend Jim Laney, Reverend George Wirth, Professor Donald Clark, and Mr. William Brown.

SAVE THE DATE: The Partnership Ministry & Community Ministries will be working together to present the 2011 Urban Ministry Conference January 13-17. The Partnership Ministry will be sponsoring two events, Dinner and A Movie on Friday night January 14 and a Spiritual Retreat on Saturday January 15, both events to be held at First Presbyterian Church. • The Conference will focus on “Building the Beloved Community” based on Ephesians 2:14: “For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility.” • Friday’s night Dinner & A Movie will feature “Invictus” the story of how a South African soccer team became a symbol of overcoming the barriers of apartheid in the wake of President Mandela’s victory.

The film, starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon will be a perfect introduction to Saturday’s conference.

n November 4th at its annual meeting in Denver, Colorado, The Samaritan Institute presented our Pastor, Dr. George Wirth, with its highest honor, The National Samaritan Award. The annual Award, established in 1989, “celebrates individuals who have made significant contributions to human health and growth, demonstrated a religious sensibility in their work, and personally and professionally exemplify the ideals of the Samaritan Ministry.”

Former Award recipients include: Dick Bolles, Barbara Bush, Rosalynn Carter, Peter Drucker, Betty Ford, Millard Fuller, Karl Menninger, Norman Vincent Peale, and John Templeton.

The Samaritan Institute, founded in 1972, has its international headquarters in Denver and encompasses a network of professional counseling centers in 380 communities throughout the United States and in Tokyo, Japan.

The Institute’s Samaritan Ministry promotes holistic health: integrat-

ing mind, body, spirit, and community. Its interfaith programs, supported by 26 denominations and faith traditions, provide over $20 million of subsidized counseling for those who cannot afford the full cost of counseling.

With George Wirth’s encouragement and support, the Samaritan Counseling Center at First Presbyterian was founded in 1998 and is accredited by the Samaritan Institute. Our Center continues to serve church members and the community at large through individual, couples, and group counseling.

In receiving the distinguished Award, George Wirth gave an eloquent and most inspirational address, giving credit to the Institute and the Ministry Centers and to those folks who financially and otherwise make the work of care giving possible. Present at the Award ceremony were FPC members Barbara Wirth, Tom and Charlotte Shields, and Jerry and Pam Hassebroek. Tom Shields, a member of the Institute’s National Board of Directors and of the local Center’s Board of Directors, was privileged to present the Award to Dr. Wirth.
