A
s we sense the season changing all around us with cooler temperatures (finally!) leading us into the fall, we continue our series “The Sermon On The Mount,” focusing this Sunday on the title “A September 26 George Wirth to preach Change Of Heart” from the text in Matthew 5:21-37. This passage from the Bible quotes Jesus’ familiar words “You have heard that it was said…. But I say to you,” over and over again, indicating the changes He challenged us to make in the way that we live and in our relationships with others. I encourage all of us to read these verses prior to worship on Sunday morning, and to consider what a difference it would make in our families, our church, our city and nation and world if we actually took Jesus’ words to heart. I believe Fr. Henri Nouwen understood that challenge when he wrote the following insight: “Indeed, living a spiritual life requires a change of heart. Such a conversion may be marked by a sudden inner change, or it can take place through a long, quiet process of transformation…What is new is that we are set free from the compulsions of our world and have set our hearts on the only necessary thing…” Come join us this Sunday as we talk together about what that “only necessary thing” means, and how we can embrace it with all of our heart, mind, soul and strength. I look forward to seeing you in the sanctuary, and as always hope that you will encourage others to come along with you!
