veryone has experienced some kind of life challenge - the loss of a job, death of a loved one, loneliness, illness, or divorce. Many people struggle alone, but this February 19 - was never God’s Chris Moore-Keish to preach intention. In Galatians 6:2, we are told to “Bear one another’s burdens.” On Sunday, February 19th five members of our congregation will be living out the Book of Galatians’ challenge as they are commissioned as Stephen Ministers, these members are: Bonita Diana Cox, Floy Daugherty, Rodrick Glass, Charmaine Smith-Campbell and David Williams. These soon to be commissioned Stephen Ministers have been meeting every Wednesday evening since September for training and are willing to help people who are struggling and need support. What do Stephen Ministers do once they are commissioned? • They listen – as the person they are paired with talks through their difficulties. • They maintain confidentiality. Care receivers need to know that what they say to the Stephen Minister will remain in confidence. • They pray daily for their care receivers asking for God’s support and healing. Please join us at the 11:15 a.m. worship service when we commission our new Stephen Ministers and listen carefully for God’s call upon you and the ways you can “Bear one another’s burdens” for those in need. s picture is worth a thousand words? Up until the invention of the printing press (1459), art was a primary means of experiencing the Gospel. Art captures what words can February 26 - struggle to convey. Lindsay Armstrong to preach Great art shakes us into revelation and fits us with new sight: in-sight, and we do not see the world, or in this case, God, God’s word, and our lives, in the same way ever again. Great art shocks. It drops us into difficult places. It comforts. It directs attention. It rewires our senses. When encountering great art deeply, we walk away changed. So it is with genuine excitement that I invite you into a Lenten journey with Rembrandt. FPC’s walls will be adorned with reproductions of Rembrandt’s masterpieces on Jesus’ parables and life. The art and scripture passages they illustrate focus our Lent sermon series entitled “Seeking the Face of Jesus”. I’ll collaborate with an array of art historians for a Sunday School series in Fifield Hall designed for further exploration of the artistic and theological aspects of the particular Rembrandt and scripture highlighted for the day. Our Lent small groups will be discussing the book: The Return of the Prodigal Son. This Lenten journey is not about great masterpieces hanging on walls. It is a series about the living God who speaks through various mediums and calls us even today. Join us for Ash Wednesday on February 22 and again February 26 as we begin our Lenten journey.
