the arts live here

After two amazing seasons of the new FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre, it’s clear that the arts live here! Downtown St. Catharines is Niagara’s new home for the creative arts and the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre is the heartbeat of this exciting transformation. I would like to thank our dedicated patrons, sponsors and supporters for their continued support as we launch into the Centre’s third season. During our third season, we look forward to featuring more of our hometown talent, as well as attracting top national and international performers to the city. This September we are proud to host the Celebration of Nations / Célébration des nations in St. Catharines at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre. With the generous support of the federal government, and as part of Canada’s 150th anniversary, this gathering is an important opportunity to learn, share and reflect on our shared history with First Nations in our community. Please share this wonderful event with your family and friends as we work as a nation to repair and strengthen our relationship with our First Nations communities. Enjoy the third season at your First Ontario Performing Arts Centre, and I look forward to seeing you throughout the year at Niagara’s home for the arts. Cheers,

WALTER SENDZIK Mayor, St. Catharines

“

I like the saying: ‘The world is as you are.’ And I think films are as you are. That’s why, although the frames of a film are always the same — the same number, in the same sequence, with the same sounds — every screening is different. The difference is sometimes subtle but it’s there. It depends on the audience. There is a circle that goes from the audience to the film and back. Each person is looking and thinking and feeling and coming up with his or her own sense of things. - David Lynch

Welcome

TO OUR 2017/18 SEASON As we enter our third season, the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre continues to carve out our role as both a vibrant community meeting place and centre for artistic excellence. Central to our work is the desire to engage a diverse cross-section of our community. This season, we continue to find new ways to showcase our vibrant local arts scene alongside exceptional artists from North America and beyond. We also acknowledge the anniversary of Confederation and continue to reflect on how we can take action from the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

We are proud to launch a new partnership with Kakekalanicks Indigenous Arts & Consultancy to present Celebration of Nations / Célébration des nations, which aims to honour the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding achievements of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples within Canada. This programming series will open our season with a significant gathering from 8 - 10 September, featuring Canadian icon Buffy Sainte-Marie (and many more), and will close our season with a highly anticipated world premiere of Kaha:wi Dance Theatre’s Blood Tides. As always, we encourage you to take risks when choosing your HOT TICKET performing arts experiences for this season. Whether it be an exceptional contemporary dance performance, a circus spectacle or participating in an epic Choir! Choir! Choir!, the season is packed full of opportunities for all to enjoy.
