+ Rejoice in the Lord! + Dear Friends in Christ, “Convict, Convert, Consecrate.” These are the words that our pastor in Minneapolis would often say in the prayer that he prayed before giving the Sunday morning sermon. Other times I have heard pastors pray, “May the words of my mouth and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, our Rock and Redeemer.” Still others have begun with: “Grace and peace to you from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” Amen. These words were meant to help the direction and result of the Sunday morning message. In a sense they set the ‘trajectory’ of the message. Dictionary.com defines trajectory as: “the curve described by a projectile, rocket, or the like in its flight.” The trajectory of a rocket is crucial in it’s ability to launch a satellite into orbit. Many of us will be watching football games this fall. The trajectory of a quarterback’s pass makes all the difference in whether it will wind up in the hands of his receiver down the field. We often use this same word for the direction of a life or an organization. Now as we conclude our Centennial Year here at First Lutheran Church I’ve been thinking about the trajectory of our church. We have some great opportunities before us in the hiring and calling of new staff to enhance an already wonderful staff. We have a very able Church Council and other Teams to direct the ministries of our congregation. We have so many faithful pray-ers and people who do so much in serving in a wide variety of roles in First Lutheran Church. We have so much for which to be thankful that is a great basis for a hope-filled trajectory into the next century here. In the midst of a rapidly changing world and culture we might wonder what the future will bring. We listen to the promises of God’s Word: 11

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

To seek God with all your heart is a great purpose for the life of an individual or a congregation. The T. R. I. P. practice of prayer helps us land at a place that will effect our trajectory. T. stands for Thanks; we thank God for all the blessings. R. stands for Regret: we confess to God our shortcomings. I. stands for Intercession; we ask God’s Holy Spirit for the help we and others need. And P. stands for Purpose; we listen for God’s leading for an action we are to take today. What a great way to start each day, or a new year, a new season in life, or even to begin a new century! A theme that has emerged for me from our preaching texts from the Narrative Lectionary we resume this fall in our worship services is a sort of trajectory: Created, Called & Consecrated. We are created in God’s Image and for His glory. He has called us to faith and to serve in His Kingdom. He consecrates us as we yield ourselves to His purposes for our lives. It really has to do with our heart, for which God really cares. Let’s all enjoy our celebration, especially on September 8, when we have our All-church 100th Birthday Worship Service and Party! Please, make every effort to come and enjoy a full church sanctuary together. Whether we focus on the convicting and converting power of the Holy Spirit, or the words and meditations of our hearts, may the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ always direct our life together, and our trajectory as a church, into a bright, hope-filled future to the glory of Almighty God. OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD SHOEBOX PROJECT FLC will again be assembling and collecting shoe boxes to be sent to children around the world.

CENTENNIAL - Did You Know? September 30, 1984 - 116th Anniversary of First Lutheran Congregation Reverend Franz Einar Wulfsberg was the pastor of Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church at that time 1984 - Stephen Ministry, a lay ministry training program, began for 30 persons. Training took place over a two year period and was led by Pastor 1919 Fran Odden September 13, 1995 – a latch key choir program begins for elementary students September 2006 – the first joint rally Sunday with First Baptist, First Presbyterian, Vineyard, First Lutheran, and Trinity Lutheran Churches was held in Central Park, including a picnic, carnival, and games for families September 2009 - Open Doors Month - Blue Zone Vitality Project - faith initiative - encourage people to come to weekly church services for better health September 14, 2014 - a dedication service was held for the back-lot project. The project included the new back entrance, canopied drop off area, two level parking area, and a new garage September 2015 - Morning Muffins for YFC started. FLC supported the ministry by baking muffins to be served on a regular schedule 4

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT FLC The Social Ministry Commission of First Lutheran Church, 301 West Clark Street, Albert Lea, MN will host its Fall Lutheran World Relief Ingathering on Saturday, October 12, 2019, from 7-11am. A semi-trailer donated by Crossroads Trailer of Albert Lea will be in the parking lot behind the church, off of St. Mary's Avenue (east side of the church). Follow the signs for entering and exiting. Quilts, Fleece Tied Blankets, School Kits, Personal Care Kits, Fabric Kits, Baby Care Kits, and Bath Size Bars of Soap will be collected. Please follow the packing instructions found in the LWR Guidelines. We really appreciate the sturdy and easy to handle boxes! Remember the 40 pound limit!! LWR has an urgent plea for school kits! We hope you have taken advantage of all the sales on school supplies. Education is critical in helping poverty-stricken children. The contents of a school kit could mean the difference between getting an education or not. In areas where LWR works, required school supplies may be more than families can afford. Monetary donations will be forwarded to the LWR Quilt & Kit Shipping Fund. Make checks payable to Lutheran World Relief.

The Special Outreach Cause Offering for the month of September is Accompong, Jamaica Well Drilling and Drum Set. Friends at First will start meeting again for lunch. NO Program. Tuesday, September 17, 2019 11:30 a.m. in Bethany Hall Menu: Lasagna, lettuce salad, garlic bread and cupcakes.

This community has to raise its own funds for projects, maintenance and development. The people have to travel quite a distance for water and are in need of a well closer. Also, they are encouraging the kids of Accomong to preserve the unique culture of their ancestors and they are in need of a drum set. Special offering envelopes will be available from the ushers at church services. Please, make checks payable to FLC.

Volunteer Appreciation and All Servants of the Lord Supper will be held on Wednesday, September 25, 2019 in Bethany Hall from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. This supper is to thank everyone who does any type of volunteer work in the Church. This includes all Ushers, Choir members, Altar Guild members, FLCW members, Quilters, Crafters, Messenger Crew, Monday Counters, Confirmation students, parents & group leaders, Sunday School Teachers and helpers, Sunday snack servers, Commission members, Welcome Ministry Team, etc. If you have helped at any time here at First Lutheran Church you are invited.

FLC COUNCIL UPDATES Minister of Music Search Committee- the Committee has completed 9 telephone interviews. Two on site interviews were held the week of August 19th. We are hoping to have someone hired the last week of August or first week in September. Keep praying that the Holy Spirit will lead us to just the right one. Interim Pastor- The Synod has been contacted for suggestions. The process is underway. Call Committee- Pastor Holt will be convening the Nominating Committee in the next few weeks to complete a few items. Recruiting a Youth Chair, Vice-President, a Final Nominating Committee Member and to get a Call Committee in place. Associate Pastor of Teaching and Family Ministries- Keeping in mind succession planning, the council is considering the concept of the next pastoral call being a “Co-Lead Pastor.” Then in May 2021, when the term of Pastor Holt’s Call here is completed, we would have our new Lead Pastor in place. Then our church would call a second pastor to serve the congregation’s needs. Accessibility- You will be noticing over the next month or so that we are adding a few features for accessibility. The unisex bathroom on the main level will have a handicap switch on it so that it is more accessible. The front door off Clark Street will also have a new handicap door switch due to the current one leaking hydraulic fluid. Budget Shortfall Provide congregation with monthly updates via verbal, screen and messenger announcements. FLC’s Peace and Power Congregation will be invited to donate to our general fund in appreciation of their worship experience. Three fundraising events (Taco John’s, Pizza Ranch and water sales at the 4 th of July Parade) have been held thus far. There are two additional events planned, Taco Johns and a Polka Music Worship service and dinner. For additional Council Information, a copy of the council minutes is available at the welcome center or Clark Street Entry.

We are using the Albert Lea Taxi Service. Those who need a ride to church can call 383-3341 to schedule a ride to the service of their choice on Sundays, or Thursday evenings. Just let the driver know to bill FLC.

Personal Visitation by the Pastors To support people at the time of illness or injury, pastors do make personal visits in hospitals, homes or Care Centers. Many hospitals, like the Mayo’s Methodist & St. Mary’s Hospitals in Rochester no longer give pastors access to lists of patients. So, if we happen to be there visiting someone, and we don’t know about someone else hospitalized, we have no way of discovering that person any more. Hospitals do NOT call pastors/churches to inform them of admissions, and have not for decades. So, please, call, if you want us to know.

We try to be available in emergencies. Do not hesitate to call the church (373-6424), if you have not seen a pastor and would like to request a visit. If you call the church office after hours and get the recording, keying option ❸ will send your call directly to the pastor on call. No name is automatically put on a printed prayer list. We ask permission before we include a name on our printed prayer list. Please, let us know if you want to be on the prayer list or be visited. ~Your FLC Pastors
