Community Prayer Service AZ -One Ministry Center 335 W. Clark, Albert Lea, MN
The biennial First Lutheran Church Leadership Elections Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. The Nominating Committee sent out a report in late April with the names of those who had accepted nominations at that time. Further nominations will be announced at the meeting. In addition, nominations can be made ‘from the floor’ at the meeting. The Nominating Committee members [Mollee Tscholl–chair, Lynn Kermes, Kristin Larson, Mark Light, John Sorlie, Debra Strosahl and Terri Stadheim, along with Chad Adams and Pastor John Holt, advisors] wish to thank all who have supported their endeavors with your prayers, suggestions, responses and willingness to honestly reply to the opportunities to serve in leadership in First Lutheran Church. May the Lord direct our steps as a community of believers together.
The Social Ministry Commission of First Lutheran Church, 301 West Clark Street, Albert Lea, MN, will host its Lutheran World Relief Ingathering on Saturday, May 20, from 7:30 am until 12 noon. A semi-trailer will be set up in the parking lot behind the church, off of St. Mary's Avenue (east side of the church). Follow the signs for entering and exiting. Quilts, Fleece Tied Blankets, School Kits, Personal Care Kits, Sewing Kits, Baby Care Kits, and Bars of Soap will be collected. Refer to lwr.org/parish or call LWR at 800.597.5973 with specific questions. Please, carefully follow the LWR Packing Instructions. Monetary donations collected at the Ingathering will be forwarded to the LWR Quilt & Kit Shipping Fund. Make CHECKS to LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF. Our 2017 Fall Ingathering is scheduled for Saturday, October 14.
Rejoice in the Lord!
Dear Friends in Christ, Christ is risen! He is risen, indeed! Hallelujah! Set within the final chapter of the fascinating and inspiring book of Hebrews in the New Testament is this gem of assurance: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8) It comes amidst exhortations to love, hospitality, remembering the imprisoned and mistreated, honoring marriage, avoiding the love of money, and another assurance: ...God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5) From time to time we need assurance. The most important assurance is the assurance of salvation. No matter what happens in this life you are thoroughly loved by our awesome God; Jesus paid the penalty for your sin; Holy Spirit calls you to trust God’s promises. The end of the story is good! In Christ we have the assurance that all will be well. We need to keep this in mind when challenges come our way. God is our truest and best resource for hope, strength and life. He promises to direct us and never leave us alone. The early disciples discovered this after Jesus’ resurrection. He is still there for us today! And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. (I John 5:11-12) Two places we can look for this assurance are the Word and Sacraments. The Word is the Bible. The Sacraments are Holy Baptism and Holy Communion. These are basic, fundamental to the Christian life. If you wonder, or if you wander, turn back to the Source, Jesus! He comes to us, without our merit, in the Word and Sacraments. This is the treasure of the church! And, it’s in the church (the people of God gathered around Word and Sacrament (ref: Article VII of the Augsburg Confession)) where we are encouraged in this assurance. Hence, the Book of Hebrews states: Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (Hebrews 10:23-25)
Summer is coming. Much fun is to be had on weekends. I encourage you to come to church each week. Don’t neglect this important gathering. Come Sunday, or come Thursday evening. Out of town? Find a church where you are and experience what God will have in store for you. It takes a little effort, but what is that compared to what He has done for us? It’s worth it! It is vital for our faith and life together. + + + The National Day of Prayer is Thursday, May 4. What is Feed My Starving Children?
At the Eagan Pack Site In the Twin Cities
Feed My Starving Children is a non-profit Christian organization committed to feeding God’s children hungry in body and spirit. The approach is simple: children and adults hand-pack meals specifically formulated for malnourished children, and we ship these meals to nearly 70 countries around the world.
We’ll pack meals from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm More details coming soon.
Youth Service Project The youth going on the summer trip to the Boundary Waters served muffins, coffee, and juice on Easter Sunday April 16.
FLC SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS FLC Matching Scholarship was given to Tyler Egge. Kimberly Olson Goddard Scholarship was given to Anna Wallace and Nicole Everding. General Fund Scholarship was given to Tim O’Shields, Noah Iverson, Joshua Forde, Andrew Field, Samuel Jensen, Anna Wallace, Nathan Wallace and Bryanna Laite. Recipients of the above scholarships were selected by the FLC Scholarship Committee on the basis of their character, achievements, and, most of all, their service in the church and community. The Matthew C. Nesse/Richard Moore Memorial Scholarship was given to Nathan Wallace. Recipients of this scholarship are chosen by the Chuck Nesse family. Gordon D. Aas Scholarship was given to Noah Iverson. Recipients of this scholarship are chosen by Lila Aas. Norm & Joyce Fredin Scholarship was given to Nathan Wallace. MUSICAL NOTES Happy May! Christ Is Risen! Thanks to our choirs (FLC Choir, Spirit Express, Sounds of Joy, Rays of Light) and instrumentalists who worked hard and used their gifts to make our Lenten Journey, Palm Sunday, Holy Week, and Easter--all vibrant worship experiences. Thanks to all and To God Be the Glory! Many of you ask for Seminary updates. By the third week in May, I will finish my first 5 courses. Being at Luther Seminary has been a rich experience in every way. I have learned so much and my access to learning resources and references has exponentially increased. Some of you may have known Rev. Dick Spande, who served at Ascension Lutheran in Albert Lea for many years before he passed away in 2015. His wife, Beth, recently called me and said that she wanted me to have his pastoral library/all his books. She said she wanted those books to be used and to live again. I went to her home and she and I loaded the books as she shared memories of his ministry. My library grew by about six full shelves on my book cases at home. I WILL use those reference and Bibles. To God Be the Glory! We are planning to have the Jessica Lokken-First Lutheran Church Summer School of Music and Art from July 17 through July 21 with the Commencement being held on Saturday afternoon, July 22. Applications are available in the Church Office or at our website: flcal.org. The school is open to children who have completed second grade through college age students. This year, we will offer chorus and art as the backbone of the school. Our specialty offerings include harp, hand bells, and percussion. If you have any questions, please call me at the church. Rays of Light Children's Choir (K-Grade 4)-Wednesdays: 3:30-4:15 PM--through May. Sounds of Joy Children's Choir (Grades 5-9) - Wednesdays: 4:15-5:15 PM --through May. The First Lutheran Church Hand Bell Choir-Wednesdays: 5:30-6:25 PM. The First Lutheran Church Choir meets on Wednesdays at 6:30-8 PM. Spirit Express meets on Tuesdays at 7:15 PM for the Singers and at 7:45 PM for the Band with the Singers. We, the Spirit Express, are committed to worship leadership and music in our 10:30 Service.
