Festival Service Celebrating the 100th Birthday of First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. Bishop Steven Delzer is the Preacher. Past Clergy will join in the festivities. The Metro Brass of Des Moines will be guest musicians.

A number of other musicians and singers will join in the festivities. A banner procession commemorating 100 years of First Lutheran Church will lead the procession that morning.

Dear Friends in Christ,

In Memoriam Dan Borland 1956-2018 It was with shock and sadness that we heard the report of the sudden death of Dan Borland on Sunday, February 24. Dan was the Peace & Power director for many years here at First Lutheran Church.

On February 24, he was in his usual place in the Sanctuary for the 8:00 am service, operating the cameras and sending the signal over to KAAL TV for broadcast to the many people who were stuck at home due to the blizzard. Dan was doing what he loved, serving the Lord faithfully. It was apparently shortly after the service that he died of an apparent heart attack. His car was parked across Clark Street where he was found. Our hearts go out in sympathy to Dan’s wife Linda and their family. May God’s Spirit give grace, comfort and peace to them, and all of us who mourn his passing, + + + God’s Space Where is God? Everywhere? Where two or three are gathered in His Name? In my heart?

It seems our lives are so full in so many ways. The wonderful gifts of our electronic devices and social media can fill our lives. Work, school, family, daily duties, entertainments, sports...the list could go on of all the good things that fill our lives.

Lent is a good time to ponder deep, important spiritual questions. So, with that in mind, under the catalyzing leadership of Tim O’Shields, we have developed our mid-week Lenten worship series under the theme of “GOD’S SPACE: A Lenten Journey to Freedom”. Each week, beginning with Ash Wednesday, we’ll look at God’s place in our lives. We hope to give practical advice, as well as inspiration, to ensure that God is allocated His rightful space during overflowing days.

In the Book of Revelation, in chapter 3, the Apostle John shares the letter to the church at Laodicea.

He writes that He knows their deeds, actions, that with which they occupy themselves. He says it shows that they are lukewarm. They have lots of good in their lives, but do not realize their poverty of spirit and spiritual blindness. Then He reminds them of His love for them and calls them to rethink their approach.

This well known verse follows: “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” (Rev. 3.20) I look at this midweek Lenten series as a gracious invitation for each of us, and all of us together, to take a fresh look at ‘God’s Space’ in our lives. There He calls us to discover, or rediscover, room to have childlike faith, room to be with God, room to share the Good News of salvation, room to grow in humble service, room to grow in faith, and to always remember that there is room at the Cross for each of us, no matter what. This God Space in our lives leads us to a new sense of Freedom to live life abundantly! Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10.10) None of us make enough room for God in our lives. We too often put other things in what should be our God Space. Nevertheless, by His grace and the merits of Jesus, God always has room for us. This hymn by Ira F. Stanphill (1946) entitled ROOM AT THE CROSS FOR YOU reminds us where the source of all grace and redemption is—at the cross of Jesus Christ. Come with us to the cross this Lent.

The cross upon which Jesus died, Is a shelter in which we can hide; And its grace so free is sufficient for me, And deep is its fountain as wide as the sea

The hand of my Savior is strong, And the love of my Savior is long; Through sunshine or rain, through loss or in gain, The blood flows from Calvary to cleanse every stain.

Though millions have found Him a friend, And have turned from the sins they have sinned, The Savior still waits to open the gates And welcomes a sinner before it's too late.

♫ ♫ ♫ MUSICAL REFLECTIONS ♫ ♫ ♫ March blessings as we come to the Season of Lent.

I believe that Lent is the most exciting time of the year. During this holy period, we walk with Jesus as he teaches us through his messages and through the parables. The Disciples called Jesus "Rabbi"--because he was their teacher. Jesus is our teacher today! Jesus' message during his earthly walk was one of love and forgiveness. In our March 10th lectionary, we will contemplate forgiveness. One of my favorite hymns is Forgive Our Sins as We Forgive. Please meditate over these powerful words, which really are a prayer: "Forgive our sins as we forgive," You taught us, Lord, to pray; But you alone can grant us grace to live the words we say.

How can your pardon reach and bless the unforgiving heart-that broods on wrongs and will not let old bitterness depart?

In blazing light your cross reveals the truth we dimly knew: how trifling others' debts to us; how great our debt to you!

Lord, cleanse the depths within our souls and bid resentment cease; Then, by your mercy reconciled, our lives will spread your peace. AMEN!

For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Matthew 6:14-15

Celebrating our Centennial year at First Lutheran is a once in a lifetime event!! We can be very proud of our heritage and we want to celebrate it. We are doing just that during this whole year!!

This excerpt is from Part V - Reasons Against Church-Going #5 - The members are not sociable: Well, even if they are not, what has that got to do with it? Do you think the church is a sociable? If you think the church was organized by Christ for your entertainment, you certainly mistake the mission of the church. The church of Christ is the “Communion of saints,” i.e., the church is a body of forgiven sinners organized for the purpose of bringing God’s pardon for sins to other sinners. The church is a body of laborers in the vineyard of the Lord, of people who work hard to build the kingdom of Christ here upon earth. The church is an army led by Christ, the Captain of our salvation, into battle against sin in all forms in all places. The church is a hospital where sin-sick sinners are nursed by other sinners who have recovered somewhat from their sins, but who are by no means perfect saints in this world. So do not criticize their crutches, bandages, weak hands, and limping walk, but thankfully receive the gospel they bring for your own cure.

Sociability, entertainment, amusement, etc. in the church is not the object for which our Savior suffered and died.

A CENTENNIAL COMMEMORATIVE QUILT IS PLANNED.....Will you help?

The suggestion has been made that we make a special quilt to commemorate our 100th birthday. We will provide fabric squares that each family unit, whether single or several family members, may design to be a part of this project. You may sign the square, draw a picture or pictures, appliqué, embroider, paint or decorate the square however you wish. Plans are to have the squares available in the Gathering Space after the middle of March to sign out. Further instructions will be provided at that time. This is an opportunity for everyone in the congregation to participate in a keepsake for the future! Look for more details in coming weeks.

Personal Visitation by the Pastors To support people at the time of illness or injury, pastors do make personal visits in hospitals, homes or Care Centers. Many hospitals, like the Mayo’s Methodist & St. Mary’s Hospitals in Rochester no longer give pastors access to lists of patients. So, if we happen to be there visiting someone, and we don’t know about someone else hospitalized, we have no way of discovering that person any more. Hospitals do NOT call pastors/churches to inform them of admissions, and have not for decades. So, please, call, if you want us to know.

We try to be available in emergencies.

Do not hesitate to call the church (373-6424), if you have not seen a pastor and would like to request a visit. If you call the church office after hours and get the recording, keying option ❸ will send your call directly to the pastor on call. No name is automatically put on a printed prayer list.
