+ Rejoice in the Lord! + Dear Friends in Christ,
Lent & Spring & the Fruit of the Spirit Galatians 5:22-23– But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Lent began in February and goes all the way through March until our Resurrection celebration on Easter Sunday, April 4. So, how’s Lent going for you? Some people find meaning in giving up something for Lent, like TV, certain foods, beverages or habits. It can be a spiritual discipline that helps to remember and focus on the sacrifice of Christ for us. The other day, Joan and I read in our morning devotions, about the fruit of the Spirit as delineated in Galatians 5. The author suggested we focus on just one of the nine aspects of the fruit of the Spirit for a week or more at a time. What a great idea! So, I am passing this on to all of you who might read this article. Instead of, or in addition to, focusing on what you might give up for Lent, try giving attention to one of the nine fruit of the Spirit in your life. Now, let me make it clear: this is not just making more effort to be more loving, joyful, peaceful, etc.... although that may be part of it. Rather, note that this is fruit of the Spirit. For the particular chosen fruit attribute on which God is calling you to concentrate, you need to seek the Spirit of God to accomplish that in your life. For example, you might pray: “Holy Spirit of Jesus, I sense You want to increase in me the fruit of [ kindness ] in my life. Help me to listen to Your voice in my heart. Guide me in prayer and Your Holy Word to discover Your direction for me. Send others to me to speak truth into my life. Show me what I must let go and what I must embrace to have Your will done in my life in this area. Accomplish in me what I cannot do for myself. Help me to notice Your work in my life and be open to all You would do, even in difficult circumstances. And, thank You for loving me and revealing Your path for me. I give myself anew to You today. May the character of Jesus be formed in Your servant so that You will be honored and glorified; through Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord. Amen. The etymology of the word Lent comes from words for the Spring season. In spring the daylight hours lengthen, warming the earth, and we think of planting gardens and fields, and looking forward to the fruits later in the year. Even though we till and plant, it is God who gives the growth. Likewise, in our spiritual lives it is God who brings forth the Fruit of the Spirit in us. “For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose.” [Philippians 2:13] May you sense the pleasure of Almighty God this Lent as you seek to grow... ...In the Light of His Love, Pastor +

NEW LSS’ EMERGENCY CARE PLANNING SERVICE In our congregation and community, and all across Minnesota, there are dedicated caregivers that provide support day in and day out for their loved ones. Often worry and strain accompanies caregiving. There is a new service from Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota (LSS) that helps caregivers build peace of mind by working with them to develop a plan for any potential situation when they could no longer care for their loved ones. LSS’ Emergency Care Planning Service works directly with caregivers and their families to thoroughly assess their needs and create a comprehensive plan that meets those needs. Through a generous grant, LSS offers this Emergency Care Planning service temporarily at no cost. Carol Huesman of Detroit Lakes started assisting her husband, Ken, with daily tasks in 2018 as his physical abilities started to decline from Pulmonary Fibrosis, a lung disease he was diagnosed with three years earlier that started to affect his ability to breath. Last February, Carol, Ken and their two adult sons met with Laura Hawk, regional coordinator with LSS Caregiver and Companion Service, to develop a plan for Ken’s care if Carol suddenly became unable to provide care. Ken passed away in April of 2020, but Carol said having a plan for his care offered peace of mind as they planned for his increasing needs. “It was reassuring that I wouldn’t have to go over how to care for Ken with everyone in our circle,” Carol said. “Laura made a document with all of the information they’d need that we kept right on our fridge.” Creating these plans can also help older adults stay in their home during a temporary emergency, such as their caregiver staying in the hospital. “It’s planning for an emergency, but ultimately, creating a roadmap for when your loved one transitions into a new phase of their life when they need more care,” Laura said. “Planning empowers the caregiver and entire family with information and choices that include ways to keep loved ones at home.” Through Emergency Planning Service, LSS works with caregivers and their families to answer questions such as: Who would care for my loved one if something happened to me? What tasks would that care involve? What resources are available in my community to support my family in providing care? “Help is out there, but as a caregiver, you have to be willing to reach out and ask for it,” Carol said. “I know that it helped my husband a lot. He didn’t feel like we were on our own. We had just a great amount of support and caring people.” This Emergency Care Planning service is temporarily available at no cost. Thank you to all of you who were able to participate in the second part of the Annual Meeting on Sunday, January 31st after the worship service. A quorum was declared with 75 in person and Zoom attendees. Two items were discussed: a) Updating the First Lutheran Church’s (FLC) constitution to align with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America’s (ELCA) model constitution b) Updating the FLC Core Value Statement To pass the two motions, a simple majority was required. The motion on the proposed constitution results were: Approve: 61 Do Not Approve: 14 The motion carried. In accordance with our current constitution, this adoption of the proposed constitution requires ratification at the next Congregational Meeting. The motion on the proposed Core Values and Beliefs statement results were: Approve: 63 Do Not Approve: 12 The Core Values and Beliefs were passed with this vote and will be placed on the website as adopted. What is Medicare Certified Home Care Program and how could we help you? Our Medicare Certified Home Care is as it states, we are certified through Medicare. How can you qualify for our Program? The Criteria is that you are Homebound and need a Skilled Service. Homebound, means it is difficult for you to leave your home, down step, into a car, etc. Usually a person who is homebound uses a walker or a cane. You may have postsurgery restrictions or are weak from a recent hospitalization or have dementia. Being homebound has nothing to do with being able to drive and it is not a choice. A person would need to think twice about going anywhere because it is so much work. This does not mean that you can never leave your home during this period of Coverage. What you CAN do: Someone can take you to doctor’s appointments, Someone can take you to Church, and Someone can take you to a hair appointment or a special famiInside Story ly Headline event. However, if you are able to hop in the car and go to Walmart with your daughter and get groceries, you probably are not homebound and would not qualify. However, during this pandemic, people could be homebound because of Covid restriction. Skilled
Services: There must be a need and you would benefit from one of 3 skilled services: A Skilled Nurse, a Physical Therapist or a Speech Therapist. We need a doctor’s order for the Skilled Service. It will be ordered by your primary care physician. A Registered Nurse would complete an assessment to determine if an individual would qualify, and what Skilled Services would be beneficial to the individual and Goals would be discussed. Progress would be documented to show improvement to meet those Goals. When individual’s goals are met they are discharged from the program. Because of the improvement, you are able to get back to your normal life and routine.
Good Samaritan Society Home Care will bill Medicare on your behalf and all services are usually paid 100%. Personal Visitation by the Pastors To support people at the time of illness or injury, pastors usually do make personal visits in hospitals, homes or Care Centers. However, during the restrictions due to the corona virus pandemic, visits are limited to telephone calls. Hospitals only call pastors/churches to inform them of dire emergencies where family requests them to do so. So, please, call us, if you want us to know. We try to be available in emergencies. Do not hesitate to call the church (373-6424), if you have not talked to a pastor and would like to request a call. If you call the church office after hours and get the recording, pushing number ❸ on your phone to reach the pastor on call. We are glad to make home visits as requested when it is safe to do so. No name is automatically put on a printed prayer list. We ask permission before we include a name on our public prayer list. SETTING CAPTIVES FREE Though St. Patrick’s Day has become a secular “holiday,” March 17 commemorates the life of a Christian missionary. St. Patrick grew up in a Christian home in Britain but wasn’t very devout until he experienced crisis. As a teen, he was captured and sold into slavery in Ireland, escaping after six years. “The Lord opened my unbelieving eyes” in Ireland, Patrick later said. God led him back there, and he converted tribe after tribe to Christianity.

BELIEVING IN Sometimes we get caught up in thinking we need to understand God in order to have faith. But faith is more about trust than knowledge; it’s more about believing in someone than believing information. A child, for instance, doesn’t have to know the precise roads to Grandma’s house; he only needs to believe in his parents and their ability and desire to get him there safely. Similarly, we need not understand all the intricacies of how God works; we can take a cue from the disciples and let belief in the risen Christ transform and empower us. In the words of Madeleine L’Engle (The Rock That Is Higher): “The disciples did not bother to try to understand the resurrection body. They doubted, and then they believed. They believed something so wonderful that it changed this broken, fragmented, beaten-down little group of men and women in a moment from depression to enthusiasm, from despair to new life, vibrant and unafraid.”

During the First Lutheran Church (FLC) “Life Game,” that was held in the first calendar quarter of 2020, many innovative ideas were shared for enriching the ministry of FLC. These ideas and suggestions have driven the work of the FLC Council over the past twelve months. However, our work is not done. Therefore, we need people to engage and to continue work and ministries of FLC. First Lutheran Church elections will be held at the May congregational meeting. There are many opportunities to serve! The nominating committee is now actively working to find individuals who are willing to engage in FLC ministry teams (commissions) and committees to further the ministry of FLC. If you are interested (or know someone that is), please contact a member of the nominating committee by April 1, 2021. CONFIRMATION CLASS ANTI-BULLYING POSTERS
DRIVE THRU FOOD MINISTRY In June, 2020, the First Lutheran Food Ministry began. The need for it was brought to the Social Ministry Team by Jennie Edwin, Christian Education Director, and the vision became reality. A committee was formed to lead this ministry. Joe LaFrance and Janice Hammer are Co-chairs, and Jill Thompson is the Volunteer Coordinator. These three, along with many dedicated volunteers, have prepared and given thousands of meals to community members on Thursday nights from 5:00-6:00.
In summer and fall, grilled meals are prepared; in winter, a hot meal is prepared in the kitchen. Just drive up and receive a homemade meal! Thank you, thank you to the tireless leaders, all the volunteers who are too many to list and the donations and memorials which allow this wonderful ministry to continue.
