Praying for Amparo; God’s protection… The word amparo means protection in Spanish. It means the protection of a living creature from suffering or damage. It is also the name of an Advocacy program designed to help Migrant Minors in the US. The program’s full name, Accompanying Migrant Minors with Protection, Advocacy, Representation and Opportunities (AMMPARO). It’s just one of many answers to serving children who are forced to flee their communities because of violence, poverty, environmental displacement or lack of opportunities. Where is your family’s country of origin? Are you proud, neutral, or disinterested in your heritage? These are questions that I asked in a recent Immersion Bible Study, and the conversation was great and lively as participants spoke of their heritage and shared stories of their parents’ and grandparents’ journey to America. Many emigrated from Scandinavian and European countries like Norway, Germany, and England. One of our passages for the season of Lent and our theme of AMPARO reminds us how to treat the foreigners in our midst. God cares for the foreigners living among us. Leviticus 19:34 The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God. Replace the word Egypt with America in the passage and you’ll begin to see that God wants fair treatment for all people regardless of where they’re from. The truth is, the word “American means people who come from someplace else.” A quote by Andrew Zimmern, “You see, we were all foreigners at some point in our history”. This Lent God reminds us of that truth and how to treat people today. The good news is that God loves you and the foreigner residing among us. God is the one calling us to treat them well. God bids us to remember that we all were once foreigners, and he reminds us to be hospitable to the those living right here in the Albert Lea area; our Sudanese families, our Karen families from Burma, our South American families and all who would call Albert Lea and the surrounding area—home. As you journey with the Lord this Lenten season, remember God’s love for the foreigner and remember God’s love for you. In Christ, Pastor Sean 2

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT FLC? The Special Outreach Cause for March is: Noisy Offering for the local Salvation Army Food Shelf Please pick up special offering envelopes from the ushers at church services. (Make checks to F.L.C.) Goal is $500 To give NOW to the special cause you can text the word Noisy and the amount to 507-788-8767. Last months special cause, Helping Families Fund, raised a total of $1,177.54.
Life Line Screening, a leading provider of community-based preventive health screenings will be in our community on Friday, May 11, 2018 at First Lutheran Church. Ultrasound screenings to identify risk factors for Cardiovascular disease include: Carotid Artery (plaque buildup-a leading cause of stroke), Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (an enlargement or weak area in the main blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body), Peripheral Arterial Disease (hardening of the arteries in the legs), a Heart Rhythm Screening (an EKG to detect Atrial Fibrillation-irregular heartbeat) and an Osteoporosis Risk Assessment for men and women. Being proactive about your health by knowing your risks helps you and your doctor address problems early. Pricing is by tests performed.
Have you volunteered to bring treats for Sunday mornings? Ask a couple friends to help out. There is a sign up sheet on the serving table in the Gathering Space. We serve approximately 16 dozen each week. If you prefer not to serve donations are gladly accepted.

Additional SCHOLARSHIPS Available Current College Age Students may also apply for: Evelyn D. Stadheim Memorial Medical Scholarship The Evelyn D. Stadheim Memorial Medical Scholarship is available for up to $5,000 for students pursuing graduate level education, or in their final year of undergraduate education, in the medical field, e.g., nursing, medical or osteopathic physicians, chiropractic, physical therapy, occupational therapy, exercise science, etc. Qualifying recipients should have a connection with First Lutheran Church. This could include members, former members, or close relatives of members: spouses, siblings, children, grandchildren, first cousins, nephews and nieces. Recipient(s) will be selected by the FLC Scholarship Committee from applications available at the church office or by submitting a letter of request.
LOCAL DISASTER RELIEF VOLUNTEERS WANTED!!!! People in the Albert Lea community are partnering with First Lutheran Church to form a disaster relief team here in Albert Lea. This team will act when a disaster such as tornados, fires, flooding or any tragedy happens. This team of volunteers will be on a list and when a need is present you will be contacted to help. You could be volunteering to do a variety of things from sheet rocking, cleaning, painting, cleaning up debris to name a few things! Training is expected to happen sometime late March. Help make a difference in our community when disaster strikes!!! Adult Bible Camp at Mount Carmel Several members of FLC have already registered for a short week of Bible Camp for Adults at Mount Carmel Camp near Alexandria for Monday–Thursday, August 20–23, 2018. PERSONAL VISITATION BY THE PASTORS To support people at the time of illness or injury we pastors do make personal visits in the hospital, homes or Care Centers. MUSICAL NOTES What a beautiful time of year for reflection and renewal. I love Lent and the buildup to Holy Week and Easter. We have many special services during Lent, Holy Week, and Easter. Our choirs are working hard to prepare beautiful music with deep meaning for this speciaI time of year. We need you to help us in choir. Please consider joining us for this short-term commitment to choir for this Lent -Easter Season. There may be more benefits to joining choir than just making music. Pastor Holt recently shared an article with me that says there are profound effects by participating in choir. Daniel Pink, author of 'WHEN': The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, said this in a January 9, 2018 Catalyst interview: "Choral singing is the new exercise. Research shows that the benefits of singing in a choir (not singing alone, but singing TOGETHER) are massive. The results are reduced need for pain medication, increased production of infection-fighting antibodies, reduced symptoms of depression, increased sensitivity toward others, improved mood, and much more." The much more is joining a welcoming community in First Lutheran Church that loves to sing TOGETHER, tell the stories of our Awesome God through music, and make music to the glory of God! We need you for this short season. COME ON DOWN!!!
ONGOING IN MARCH— First Lutheran Church Choir--Open to ages youth through adult--Wednesday Rehearsals from 6:30 to 8 PM. You don't have to read music! We will work with you! First Lutheran Church Hand Bell Choir--Open to ages youth through adult--Wednesday Rehearsals from 5:30 to 6:25 PM. We are looking for music readers for bells! Spirit Express Band and Singers--Open to ages youth through adult--Tuesday Rehearsals from 7:15 to 8:45 PM. We are always looking for singers and band players!
SPECIAL THINGS IN MARCH: Maundy Thursday, Thursday, March 29 at 7 PM-Experience the Living Lord's Supper. Great Vigil of Easter, Saturday, March 31 at 7 PM--This beautiful service starts with a blazing fire outside the church! We will carry the Light of the World back into our Sanctuary--THIS IS THE FIRST SERVICE OF RESURRECTION!!! We will journey through the Old Testaments stories of liberation and restoration as our YOUTH SHARE DRAMATIC INTERPRETATIONS OF THESE SCRIPTURE READINGS!
