+ Rejoice in the Lord! ~ He is Risen! + God continues to inspire us to be more, do more, and give more. God’s inspiration is found in our everyday thoughtfulness of others, in our kind deeds, and in our moments of hospitality and generosity.

Inspiration is what allows hymn writers to put melody to Scripture so that we can sing high notes and praises to our God. It is found in our can-do attitudes that make all the difference in how we navigate the hurts and pains of life. Inspiration is all around us, but what inspires me most, my dear congregation, are your God stories.

Many of you have come into my office to share your stories of God’s love, mercy, redemption, salvation, and triumph. Even suffering failures and setbacks, your attitudes of total trust in the Lord serve as shining examples and testimonies of your courage and faith. You inspire me to no end. This is why I love our Good Friday service so much. It is the one time in our church year where our members get to share their God stories in worship. Couched in the context of the seven last sayings of Jesus Christ on the cross, we hear inspirational stories of how our members receive and offer forgiveness, endure suffering and persevere, and experience God’s grace in the midst of life’s challenges. We have members sitting in the congregation whose stories truly remind me of little David overcoming gigantic Goliath. Your God stories inspire, encourage, and motivate others to tell their stories as well. Let’s start a movement of sharing our personal stories of God’s redemption.

It is our hope to offer more opportunities for all of us to have an opportunity to share our stories and witness to God’s love, redemption, and salvation in our lives. Our hope is to move from being a pastorinspired church to being a community full of inspirational people, who uplift, encourage, and motivate each other through our life-giving and redemptive God stories.

SUMMER MEN’S STUDY—WEDNESDAY MORNINGS AT FLC Love Does is a book by Bob Goff. Join with several men Wednesday mornings at 6:30 am in the Multi-purpose Room at church , beginning June 5, to discuss it. We’ll have a few copies on hand to borrow, or purchase for $550 each. Together we hope to “Discover a Secretly Incredible Life in an Ordinary World.” All men are invited to attend regularly every week, or occasionally whenever you can. Coffee & water usually provided.

NEW BOOK BY FLC MEMBER DEALS WITH ALZHEIMERS DISEASE Patti Hareid, daughter of Ralph and Marjorie Peterson, kept a journal as she and her family struggled in the days of her father’s Alzheimer's disease. Her parents were beloved leaders in our congregation and community, as well as to their immediate family. This small book documents from her journal writings her personal journey on this difficult road. Just 80 pages long, it gives insights into the strains this disease presents to a devoted family. I recommend it to you all. Patti donated a copy to our church library; it will soon be available to check out. It is also available online at Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

Boese, Professor of Organ at St. Olaf College. The organ dedication was preceded by the dedication of the renovated Bethany Hall.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT FLC LIBRARY CORNER MAY 2019 This is another great book by the man who authored The Five People You Meet in Heaven and Tuesdays with Morrie. Mitch Albom has written a true story, Have a Little Faith, over a period of eight years, two faiths, and two communities separated by many miles. The book begins when Mitch Albom receives an unexpected request from his former New Jersey rabbi—deliver the rabbi’s eulogy.

Having not followed his faith for many years, Albom decides he needs to get better acquainted with Albert Lewis, his boyhood rabbi. Now living in Detroit, Albom makes many flights back to New Jersey to capture the real essence of the man who has asked him to write and deliver his final words. While on this journey of renewed faith, Albom also encounters a Detroit pastor, a reformed convict and drug dealer, who preaches to

the poor and homeless in a church in downtown Detroit with a hole in its roof. Moving between two worlds, Christian and Jewish, African-American and white, impoverished and wealthy, Albom sees how these very different men employ faith in fighting for survival for themselves and their followers. Although the texts, prayers, and histories are different, the author begins to see a striking unity between the two worlds and between beliefs everywhere. As with all of his books, Albom practices tithing one-tenth of his profits from his book sales to charities. The church, synagogue, and homeless shelters in this story are the recipients with this book’s proceeds.

Five youth and two adults will be going to Colorado on an adventure trip. Please be praying for us as we are on our trip. We ask specifically for safe travels to and from Colorado, safety while hiking in the mountains, and that we have open hearts to experience God in a new way. We also ask for you to pray for us by name: Jacob Moffitt, Ryker Rofshus, Mady Dreyling, Sydney Collins, Mason Drescher, Staci Waltman and Jordan Winter. Thank you for supporting us on this trip!

Report from Happiness Is A Blanket...

The “Happiness is a Blanket� quilters sent 142 quilts on the Lutheran World Relief truck on May 18, 2019. We also donated 7 full sized quilts, 18 baby quilts and 2 comforters to the Salvation Army, and 1 to the American Legion Auxiliary.

We want to thank everyone who contributed material and money to this project. Please continue to remember us as you are cleaning closets or finding good usable things at garage sales. We can use fabric, bedding (sheets, pillow cases, mattress pads, comforters, bed skirts) table linens, drapes, curtains and jeans. This means we

used many yards of fabric for the 142 quilts that were sent on the van. Besides the fabric we use fill for warmer quilts and sheets for lighter quilts.

They are sent to various climates.

We also welcome anyone interested in joining the group. You do not have to know how to sew as there is a variety of jobs to be done such as ripping, tying, ironing, cutting, etc. ~Quilters If you have any questions, please contact Audrey Christensen 373-2770 or Bonnie Trampel 373-1665.

♫ ♫ ♫ MUSICAL REFLECTIONS ♫ ♫ ♫ Summer Greetings! The words of a favorite worship hymn of many people in First Lutheran Church, "Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart." God's calling has been burning in me for my whole life. This calling to be a pastor in Word and Sacrament has been quite a journey so far. Many folks ask me, "Where are you with your studies?" To be ordained as a pastor in the ELCA requires a Masters of Divinity (MDiv) Degree from a Lutheran Seminary.

The MDiv Program is a four-year program--three years of academic study and one year of internship.

Some people choose to complete their internship in Year Three and then return to the Seminary for their last year of study. I chose to complete my academic work first and then end my MDiv journey with what they call a culminating internship. I completed all my academic work in May. I have been called to St. Peter Lutheran Church in Spokane, Washington for my internship. This church does not have a regular pastor, so I will be their Intern-Pastor. I will be Synodically-authorized by the Bishop of Eastern Washington-Idaho and Bishop Delzer of our SE MN Synod to preside over Communion and to do baptisms. Those are two things that interns cannot do before Ordination, unless they are Synodically-authorized. This church also has the largest food ministry in Eastern Washington to feed hungry people. I have prayed "Your will be done" for my internship assignment. I prayed that I would have opportunity to work in a ministry that feeds hungry people.

God is good. After the one-year internship and after you get "final" approval from Luther Seminary and from the Synod, you graduate with your MDiv. Then you are "drafted" from a pool of new candidates for Ordination at an ELCA Event at Churchwide in Chicago, fondly called "The Draft". You are then assigned to your "First Call" for three years. After those three years, you become a free agent and can move as you are called. Bishop Delzer says, "The First Call is only three years--not a lifetime!" I am looking forward and saying, "Your will be done."

I will be here through July 31st and will preside in my first service at St. Peter on August 18th. I need to be there about a week before that, so I will be packing and moving from August 1st on. Sean graciously gave me the Message time on Sunday, July 28th (and Thursday, July 25th), so I can have a last time to preach here and share my words of gratitude. This is truly an exciting time, a scary time with a move to the west coast, and a time of sadness as I leave a congregation that I truly love and will never forget. Please pray for me as I will always pray for First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. Thank you for six beautiful years.

Habitat 500 Bike Ride —July 14-19, 2019

MESSAGE SERIES IN JUNE Sunday School has ended for the Summer, but the worship, learning and celebration continue each week at your church. We have our traditional worship service at 8:00 am each Sunday using the great hymns of the church. This service is broadcast at 10:00 am on Channel 6—Peace & Power, and on KATE Radio at 11:00 am. Each Sunday at the 10:00 am Praise & Worship service we have the “Children’s Bucket” message, where we ask one of the children to bring an object—living or inanimate—in the bucket. The pastor then uses it to have an object lesson “on the spot” for the children and all of us. It’s fun.

Thursdays, at 6:30 pm, worship in the chapel at FLC, is a nice option for those of you who will be busy or out of town over the weekend.
