Rejoice in the Lord! Dear Friends in Christ, One of the Bible verses I committed to memory as a young adult, and also was required to memorize by Rev. Dr. Stensvaag, is Isaiah 40:10: Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. These are times where we could give in to fear. The coronavirus pandemic, economic woes, social unrest, racial injustice, farm commodity and livestock markets in disarray, all can make us wonder what the future holds. This time of year when we want to settle back, celebrate the 4th of July, gather with community members for a parade, fireworks and the county fair, has changed and made the threats to our way of life more stark. It would be easy to just retreat into an attitude of defeat and despair. God’s Holy Spirit inspired the Apostle Paul to write to his young protégé, as we read in 2 Timothy 1:7: For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. America has gone through harrowing times before in our history. The Great Depression began in 1929, and then, years later World War 2 came about. In his first inaugural address as president in March of 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) spoke these now famous words: So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is...fear itself — nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. My father found FDR inspiring, so much so that my mother told me years later that they gave me my middle name, Franklin, after him. I don’t know about FDR’s faith life, but I do know that individuals, families, communities, even nations can be paralyzed by fear. Perhaps, FDR was Spirit-inspired to utter those now famous words to help our nation move forward. There will be struggles ahead for all of us to get through these perilous times. I’m glad to be part of a congregation that is not paralyzed into fear. Using the opportunities before us, we are encouraging one another, feeding the hungry, proclaiming the Gospel effectively to an ever-widening audience, innovating ways to grow in faith and deepening devotion together to our Lord and Savior. These disciplines, born out of love for God and people, energize us to serve more effectively with joy and fulfillment. The Apostle John wrote, as recorded in I John 4:18a: There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. Always remember the perfect love of God demonstrated in our Lord Jesus Christ, whose death atoned for our fears and failures. Then He rose from the dead to new life in God’s love. It’s God’s love that will lead us through as individuals and communities of believers to triumph in the midst of uncertainties, even without the fireworks and fairs, because we rely on the certain love of our God. So, Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. ~ Hebrews 10:23 We look forward to meeting together safely to celebrate in person the goodness of God and faith. Until then, let us not take our faith and calling lightly, but always remember the God who calls us to faith, not fear, because He is with us, to bring us out of the darkness into life... ...In the light of His love,

The Special Outreach Cause Offering for the month of July is Compassion International Special offering envelopes will be available from the ushers at church services. Please, make checks payable to FLC. Adiel Sthif Espinoza Jorge Age: 8

First Lutheran has two immediate volunteer positions they are looking to fill asap. These positions are important and vital to our ministry at FLC. Please contact Kara Heinemann at 507-373-6424 if you are interested. HISTORIAN- We are looking for a person interested in leading a small team of people to find and preserve items of historical value for the church. If history and collecting information is your interest this is a great volunteer position for you. REMEMBER this is your history and it can only be accomplished with your help. TECHNOLOGY AGENT– We are looking for one volunteer who has experience in navigating a website platform. This individual would be responsible for helping to update and maintain the FLC website. 3
FLC COUNCIL JUNE 2020 UPDATE
The Communication Task Force is working on ways to help with communication around the church. The visibility of FLC and the events that occur here are very important and the team is working on ways to improve communication. Stay Tuned! The Revitalization Task Force approved two new items to be implemented. 1. To Increase the visibility of First Lutheran Church within the congregation and community 2. To record the contemporary worship service and post it to you tube and or Facebook to reach those who enjoy that service. The Thursday night Food Ministry Program held its First meal on June 11th where they served 37 meals! The program is going great and the support has been outstanding! A council/staff retreat is planned for August 8th at the Barn at Chapeau Heights where the council will discuss and create an action plan from the Life Game Focus group discussion. The Council still has an open position for a Youth Chair person. If you are interested or know anyone interested, please contact Kara Heinemann at 507-373-6424. Kristin Larson volunteered to step up and be the council Secretary, we are so grateful for her and welcome her to the team! The Nominating Committee is working hard to get a Minister of Music search committee together to start the interview process. It has been determined by the council that we will seek out a Minister of Music that has organ skills but has a focus on contemporary music! The Call Committee Chair has a report in the messenger to update you all on the call process and where we are heading!! Please read that for an update!

FLC CALL COMMITTEE UPDATE Dear FLC Community. We have good news that the council has tasked us with the search for an associate pastor. We as a Call Committee can now move forward with the completion of the Ministry Site Profile. Many of you have contributed to the information that will be included in this profile. Thank you! We have a general timeline from the Synod for moving forward. We should hopefully be ready to reconvene soon. We now have the defined Call, and we as a committee will finish the profile for that purpose. Once this is finished and approved by our committee the MSP will be sent to the church council for approval. When everyone is in agreement, we will submit it to the Synod this fall. We hope to be interviewing after the first of the year. Once again Covid has been a large factor in this process. We will keep you informed, and be assured we are working!! Our “Counting Crew’ is PRICELESS! First Lutheran Church is blessed to have 2 teams of members committing to 2 hours every other Monday to process the offering. SPOTLIGHT OF THE MONTH Hello, My name is Brent Peterson, I have recently had the pleasure of joining the staff here at First Lutheran Church in the role of “Building and Grounds supervisor.” I look forward to working with all of you to make this wonderful church shine!
