THE MISSION OF FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH IS: 1TO GATHER, EQUIP, AND EMPOWER PEOPLE TO JOYFULLY DO

CHRIST’S WORK.

+ Rejoice in the Lord! + Dear Friends in Christ, What a great month we have coming up here at First Lutheran Church!  Sundays in July will feature Pastor Forde’s 3-week message series on Psalms and the companion book he wrote for us, entitled A Hop, Skip and Jump through the Psalms. Then on the last Sunday of the month, Tim O’Shields will bring the message for us. Don’t forget to worship each week. The 8:00 am service on Sunday is early enough that you have much of the day to do other things. The 10:00 am Sunday service is late enough so that you can sleep in, or take a walk, before church. If you plan to be gone over the weekend, be sure to worship wherever you find yourself, or, like many, come to the Thursday evening service at FLC in the Chapel. If you happen to miss the message here at FLC, you can always catch up by seeing the video of the message on our website: www.flcal.org. Vacation Bible School will be held at FLC on Monday-Thursday, July 15–18, 12:30–5:00 pm each day. Stop by and catch the excitement and energy. Then come for the closing program on Thursday, July 18, that will be the Chapel service for that day. You’ll be glad you did! Centennial Community Day will be held on Saturday evening, 4:00–7:00 pm, July 27. It will be a fun and meaningful day for FLC and the whole community. Held in Central Park, the goal is to celebrate our Centennial, and also thank the Albert Lea community and our neighbors. Tim O'Shields, our Minister of Music & Worship finishes his tenure here at the end of July. Besides preaching the message on Thursday and Sunday, July 25 and 28, there will be a farewell event to honor him and express our gratitude. Plans are still being formulated for that event. A Minister of Music Search Team has been formed to ‘replace the irreplaceable’. Please, keep our efforts in your prayers. Members of the team are: Rachel Christensen, Tom Eaton, Sandy Jensen, Julie Johnson, Jamie Kyllo, Brenda Ludtke, Mary Jane Pierson, Dawn Thompson (chair), and Rich Yost. Wow! We have had record rain falls this spring! It’s great to see the lush green growth of all the vegetation in God’s beautiful creation. The Apostle Peter ends his first letter with these words: But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen. (I Peter 3:18) To grow in grace and knowledge, it takes being filled with the Living Water of our Lord (John 4:10 & 7:38). This happens when we gather together (Matthew 18:20), read, study and meditate (Joshua 1:8) on His Holy Word (Psalm 119:105), and spend time in prayer and praise. I encourage you to remain humble & curious... listening for His calling. Take time this summer to be led by the Good Shepherd and experience “He leads me beside the still waters; He restores my soul” (Psalm 23:2b-3a). Then you, too, will be lush, growing and fruitful, giving glory to Christ with your life! 

♫ ♫ ♫ MUSICAL REFLECTIONS ♫ ♫ ♫ I hope your summer is going great! Well--the time has come! This is my final Messenger article. Wow! These six years have really flown by. It would be impossible to thank each of you individually for the love and support you have shown in these six years. I am not going attempt to list the names of everyone who has made my time here a joy. If I tried to do that, I would miss someone and then feel terrible! So, I am going to thank God for the goodness that He showed when I was called here in 2013. Here are some of my favorite Scriptures on thanksgiving as I say "THANK YOU" to First Lutheran Church: Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him; bless His name. Psalm 100:4 Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 The Lord lives! Praise and thanksgiving to my Rock! May God, the Rock of my salvation be exalted! 2 Samuel 22:47. Give thanks to the Lord and call on His name; make known among the nations what He has done. 1 Chronicles 16:8 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body, we are called to peace and to be thankful. Colossians 3:15 These are some of my fondest memories here at First Lutheran Church: When I came here in 2013, my waist was 33 inches. As I ate hot dish after hot dish and enjoyed much cake and baked goods in our nearly weekly funeral lunches, I quickly plumped up. Thanks to the local "Y" for helping me take those lbs off! Now, I generally decline the funeral lunches! Most of you know how much I love the story of Christ's birth. Some of my fondest memories will always be the beautiful music that told that story of Christ's birth at the Hanging of the Green and the Christmas Eve Services. Alleluia! The Crèche Walk and Cross Walk also told those beautiful stories about the birth, life--death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Thanks to Julie Lokken for helping bring those stories to living color! First Lutheran Church Choir--I will never forget you. You gave and gave and gave. You always gave your best! Spirit Express--your 15+ year commitment to leading worship is amazing! Thank you! "Big", festival services need brass, other instruments, and timpani. Thanks to the faithful brass, instrumentalists, and timpanists that truly made amazing music year after year! Starting the Easter Vigil Services will always be a highlight. Thanks to the MANY participants who contributed to acting out the powerful stories of redemption and resurrection! Every Holy Week Service for all these six years will always be great memories! It is all about the story of Christ and Holy Week stories are very powerful! My colleagues on staff of FLC--I love you and will never forget you! JT--We made a great team! Thanks to Pastor Holt and Pastor Forde for all the love, support, and encouragement as you embraced me on the pastoral ministry team. It was a privilege to lay out the Centennial Service and be a part of it! To God be the glory for 100 years of mission and ministry at FLC. May God bless this church in rich ways in the next 100 years! Peace, Tim O'Shields 4

SPECIAL BEQUESTS RECEIVED IN MAY Vern Jahnke often attended worship and other events and meals here at First Lutheran Church over the last several years. You would usually see him with his good friend, Audrey Sorenson. Audrey became a member of First Lutheran Church some time ago, but Vern continued his membership at Grace Lutheran Church. A few months ago, Vern moved into Thorne Crest Senior Living where he was residing at the time of his death on May 3, 2019, at the age of 91. We are so grateful that Vern remembered First Lutheran Church in his estate plans. On May 16, 2019, we received two bequests from Vern: $ 30,643.44 — for First Lutheran Church, and $ 35,753.12 — for Peace & Power Vern had these investments in Certificates of Deposit at a local bank, with a “Payable on Death” designation with FLC and P&P being the named beneficiaries. We thank God for Vern’s good planning and friendship with us here at First Lutheran Church. Blessed be his memory.
