Dear Friends in Christ,

Living Generously! I like the T-shirts I see people wearing around First Lutheran Church when certain special events are going on. The T-shirts say “LIVE GENEROUSLY”. It’s often a meal or other event where the Thrivent organization helps sponsor it. I love the camaraderie and laughter as people serve together for a common purpose. Proverbs 11:24-25 says: One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. One of the things I notice about people who are generous is the JOY with which they live life. Generosity flows out of a grateful heart. Generosity is not limited to finances. It also includes our time and abilities. (Think: Time, Talent & Treasure) A recent article in Thrivent Magazine tells that generously sharing your time and talents through volunteering benefits your social connections, self-esteem, quality of life, cholesterol, blood pressure, happiness, brain function, longevity, gratitude and more! 1 Timothy 6:17-19 says: Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. + + + Our special outreach cause for July is to support Compassion International (CI). We are designating July 9 as our Compassion Sunday. In addition to the opportunity to give a special gift, we will be telling you how you can sponsor a child in need somewhere in the world. My wife, Joan, and I have been sponsoring a child for years through CI—first a boy named Wilder until he completed the program at age 18, and now Miguel in Bolivia. Our grown children do this as well. It gives us all joy to help others in Jesus’ Name. For $38 per month, the CI program makes sure the child is helped with food, education and the Gospel. + + + On Sunday, July 23, (Thursday, July 20) Pastor Forde is kicking off our new Sunday message series called “First Summer”. Report from the Quilters... The “Happiness is a Blanket” quilters sent 161 quilts on the Lutheran World Relief truck on May 20. We also donated 2 quilts to the Annual Good Earth Village Quilt auction, 6 full sized quilts to the Salvation Army, 2 for Holidays Head and 1 to the America Legion Auxiliary. We want to thank everyone who contributed material and money to this project. Please continue to remember us as you are cleaning closets or finding good usable things at garage sales. We can use fabric, bedding

(sheets, pillow cases, mattress pads, comforters, bed skirts) table linens, drapes, curtains, clothing and jeans. This means we used about 1,230 yards of fabric for the 161 quilts that were sent on the van. Besides the fabric we use fill for warmer quilts and sheets for lighter quilts. They are sent to various climates . If you have any questions contact Audrey Christensen 373-2770 or Bonnie Trampel 373-1665. ~Quilters 3

We want to invite you to a special event taking place at our church on July 30, 2017.

During the month of May, people could sign up to win a book, and on June 04, the winners were drawn. The library board is pleased to announce JoAnn Palmer and Maxine Hanson as the excited recipients. We are privileged to have Charles Johnson from Music Serving the Word performing a concert of sacred music accompanied by Dale Niehaus on the piano. We have been blessed to hear Mr. Johnson in concert at Mt. Carmel on several occasions and wanted to share this wonderful experience with others. Please join us at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 30, 2017 for an afternoon of music. We hope you will invite friends and family to join us for this community event. There is no charge for this concert. It is time to think "Relay for Life"! Your First Lutheran team will be selling Madeleine's chocolate chip cookies after church services on July 9th. The cookies are $1.00 each. Produce has been planted. We planted green beans, corn, tomatoes, onions, potatoes, beets, carrots, peppers, and sunflowers. We have been spending most of our time weeding and watering. We have 8 youth who have participated so far. We are looking forward to sharing our progress next month!

The First Lutheran Church women are kicking off their project to celebrate the Centennial Anniversary of First Lutheran Church with a historical cookbook. We encourage your participation.

Forms for submitting recipes are available on the table outside the church office and at the Welcome Center. You may also find the form online at CookbookPublishers.com. All recipes must be submitted using the Cookbook Publishers recipe form whether typed or handwritten. Be sure to include your printed name and phone number on the line provided at the bottom of the form in the event there are questions. The recipes need to be clearly written and legible. Please be sure to check ingredients and include complete instructions for preparation, including pan size, baking time and temperature, and how each ingredient is incorporated. Please note if the recipe is sugar, salt or gluten free. You will see icons in the upper right corner of the form, so if one of them applies to your recipe, please check the box. We are looking for recipes that have meaning to the church or to your family. Recipes may include a note giving a brief history (2 or 3 lines) such as, my grandmother made this every Christmas and we continue to serve it annually. Or in the case of First Lutheran Church, perhaps a recipe was used for a salad luncheon or pot luck years ago and has not been served for a number of years. We also welcome heritage recipes from all the Scandinavians and other cultures represented in our church family. We would love to have every member represented in this very special celebration cookbook. In addition to recipes, we are looking for historical information dating back to the early life of our church. If you have a story or an event, please write a brief paragraph for possible inclusion in the book. We welcome pictures or drawings of church life as well. We will not be able to use everything, but we hope to share interesting stories or facts about First Lutheran Church throughout the cookbook! MUSICAL NOTES Happy Fourth of July! The weather is warm and summer is in full bloom! However, as a Minister of Music and Worship, I am fully engaged in planning worship and music for All Saints Day, Thanksgiving, Advent, and (believe it or not) Christmas. As we move through the summer and head into the fall. I want to reach out to ALL potential choir members who are interested in joining our vibrant choir beginning in September. There are weekly practices and singing in weekly services most weeks, but there is no measure for the joys of sharing music with others and in service to God! A family member recently shared an article from the May 2017 Reader’s Digest regarding ways to stay youthful, healthy, and vibrant. One of the top “things to do” was to SING! The article cited an extensive study of people who joined a choir. Those people who did join a choir were compared to another study group of folks who do not sing and did not join a choir. The choir folks were determined to be in overall better health, were less likely to use any medications, felt more “Included” and less lonely, and were less susceptible to injuries--overall better quality of life! The study determined that the breathing of choir singers is “better’ than the breathing of non-singers. Better health and well-being was attributed to better breathing as well as the emotional benefits of creating harmony with a group. Another study in Sweden also determined that when groups sang in unison, their heart rates slowed down and eventually synchronized. This could have long-term positive impact on both heart and mental health. These are powerful benefits AND choir is simply put, MUCH FUN! Please consider joining us in the fall as we all seek to honor God in our worship services. In Psalm 96:1-2, God’s Word tells us: Sing to the Lord a new song; Sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, bless His name. Proclaim good tidings of His Salvation from day to day. ALLELUIA! In my journey to Ordination, I am taking a Seminary course called Who I Am As a Christian Public Leader. In that course, I am working through goals and objectives, including preparing and sharing a sermon. ALL youth (those who have completed first grade all the way through recent High School graduates!) are invited to participate at NO COST. A snack and lunch will be provided. What? A rewarding learning experience for all participants. The school offers CHORUS AND ART AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT to ALL Participants. Opening Assembly for LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, plus CHORUS AND ART, Snack and Lunch are all scheduled from 9 AM through 12:15 PM Monday through Friday. Additional specialty (ELECTIVE) courses are also offered to all participants. Every effort will be made to place students in these courses. ELECTIVE Courses include: Hand Bells, Harp, and Percussion. These ELECTIVE courses are scheduled from 12:15 PM through 1:45 PM Monday through Friday. Dates: Monday, July 17 through Friday, July 21. The Commencement Concert, Art Show and Reception will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 5 PM in the First Lutheran Church Sanctuary. Times: OPENING ASSEMBLY for LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, CHORUS, ART, Snack, and Lunch runs from 9 AM through 12:15 PM Monday through Friday. ELECTIVES (You must request these on the application.
