+ Rejoice in the Lord! + Dear Friends in Christ, As the New Year is rung in, the song “Auld Lang Syne” is often heard. From a little Internet research I discovered that “Auld Lang Syne” was originally a Scottish poem that was later set to music. The phrase “auld lang syne” translates literally to “old long since” in English and means something akin to “times gone by,” "long, long ago", "days gone by", or "old times", and might be loosely translated as "for the sake of old times". The sentiment behind it seems to be that as the new year dawns, our thoughts often go to the past year, and even further back to long past years. Even though some of the verses of the song refer to raising a cup of some sort of beverage as they remember the old times, I thought of some connections that could be made to faith in life. Here are the lyrics to the song and some comments, applications and Bible passages that could be used to point to our faith: Should old acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind? 1 Should old acquaintance be forgot, and old lang syne? CHORUS: For auld lang syne, my dear2, for auld lang syne, we’ll take a cup of kindness3 yet, for auld lang syne. We two have run about the slopes4, and picked the daisies fine5; But we’ve wandered many a weary foot6, since auld lang syne. CHORUS We two have paddled in the stream, from morning sun till dine; But seas between us broad have roared7 since auld lang syne. CHORUS And there’s a hand my trusty friend! And give me a hand o’ thine! 8 And we’ll take a right good-will draught, for auld lang syne.

1. Think of the old acquaintance as our Lord God in Jesus Christ. Nothing and no one is more important to remember and keep in mind than the fact that we have a loving God and Savior. (John 3:16-17 & I Corinthians 15:1-4) 2. “My dear”—Who is dearest to you? Family and friends, but always our dear Lord & Savior. (John 15:12-17) 3. The words “cup of kindness” reminds me of the Cup we share in the Lord’s Supper, and the kindness of the One Who gave Himself for us, and keeps giving Himself in the Sacrament, so we never forget. (I Corinthians 11:23-26) 4. Many adventures of life with our gracious God watching over us. (Psalm 121:5-8) 5. Many blessings from God to recount. (II Peter 1:3-4) 6. Often weary in life, God is my strength. (Psalm 27:1, 1314 & Matthew 11:28-30) 7. Has anything separated you from a close, personal relationship with Jesus? (Romans 8:38-39) 8. Let the New Year be a time where you renew your connection to Jesus. Invite Him into your heart and life. He longs to take you by the hand and lead you in faith and life. (John 1:9-13; Matthew 6:21; Matthew 22:37-38)

As we transition to the New Year, we have successes cheered and regrets remembered, newborns celebrated and loved ones mourned. With Christ we face a hope-filled future as we boldly enter 2020. To gather with friends and family and remember the people and God we cherish is a good thing. Do not neglect our gathering together at church each week. It is vital to keep faith strong. (Hebrews 11:23-25) + + + May you experience a close, vital relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in this New Year by the power of His Holy Spirit, as you live and breathe... ...In the Light of His Love,

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT FLC? Miss Fannie’s Hat is a treasure, a heartwarming story of unselfish love. To best describe this book about a ninety-nine old who has lots of hats and loves them all, I quote the author, Jan Karon. She writes “My grandmother, Miss Fannie, was so wonderful I wanted to share her with everyone. I wrote Miss Fannie’s Hat to give both children and adults a sense of family, to give them the grandmother or great-grandmother they may never had, or always wished they had. Briefly, the story is about sacrifice and the rewards that can come when we give with a willing heart.”

More new books in the library. And they are for the Children’s Corner. Already checked out and returned by a grandma who wanted to share them with visiting grandchildren, they are ready for another checkout. Jan Karon, the beloved author of the Mitford series, is the author of these books, also. Violet Comes to Stay and Violet Goes to the Country present the cat of Cynthia Coppersmith, one of the main characters of the Mitford series. She marries Father Tim and has a cat named Violet. Now her beloved cat stars in her own books. Filled with beautiful illustrations, they send a very positive message Just looking at the covers of these books will be along with touching stories. In Violet Comes to Stay, enticing enough to make you want to read them. So, Violet, through trial and error but never giving up, please do so at the First Lutheran Church Library. finds her forever home. In the second book, Violet visits in the country with her new “human mom”, gets in lots of trouble but wins the heart of grumpy Uncle Leo.

We would like to give you all the opportunity to thank her for her years of service, say farewell and give well wishes to her at her new position. Julie will be greatly missed around here. Her smiley face, positive attitude and bubbly personality will be missed at First Lutheran! Thank you Julie for a wonderful 18 years and we will sincerely miss you!

New Coffee Policy Effective January 1, 2020 Sunday mornings there will be 6 pots out on the tables in the Gathering Space. There will not be pots on every table due to many of those pots getting wasted. If your pot is empty, please, check other pots on other tables, if the table is not occupied, or get a refill at the treat table. Thank you for your understanding as together we are faithful stewards of all the blessings God has given us!

We want all of our groups and members to enjoy the refreshment of coffee; however, in order to be good stewards of our resources we have implemented a policy on coffee usage. All groups that meet will be provided coffee, if requested. The number of pots that will be filled will be limited. If you need more, once they are empty, please, ask. We are limiting the number of pots we will fill as we have been dumping/ wasting too much coffee.

What a great response to our Fall Stewardship Appeal around the theme

Giving !

We have asked all First Lutheran Church people to respond to the invitation to set a goal for giving in 2020. Thanks to all who have faithfully and eagerly responded! A generous member of FLC offered a “Challenge Grant” of $5,000 to encourage us all to submit an intent card. This person believes in the value of supporting the church generously and of setting a giving goal to put substance to good intentions. This grant will be released when we reach a minimum of 240 responses. Have you responded yet? For those of you who have not yet submitted your Spirit of Giving “Statement of Intent for 2020” card, there is still time to do so. 1. Paper cards are available in the church office, from an usher on Sundays, or 2. you can respond to the link on our website, or 3. scan this QR code on your mobile device. We are well on our way to the minimum goal of receiving 240 “Statement of Intent for 2020” responses, which will release the special $5,000 Challenge Grant. As of this writing we had received 166 “Statement of Intent for 2020” responses. Let’s not leave that grant unused. We only need 74 more of you to respond. Why do it? Why set a goal? Who cares? It’s a way of honoring our God. Goals help us to make good on a good intention. God cares about our hearts, and He says in His Word—Matthew 6:21: For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. May you experience God’s pleasure and blessing as you embrace and are embraced by the Spirit of Giving ! Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. (Ephesians 5:1-2)

Sunday, January 19th, 2020 Join us for an afternoon of Skiing and Snow Tubing. We will spend the afternoon at Mt. Kato. You have the option of skiing or snow tubing. You must decide which option you are doing when you sign up.

MISCELLANEOUS FLC INFORMATION Personal Visitation by the Pastors To support people at the time of illness or injury, pastors do make personal visits in hospitals, homes or Care Centers. Many hospitals, like the Mayo’s Methodist & St. Mary’s Hospitals in Rochester no longer give pastors access to lists of patients. So, if we happen to be there visiting someone, and we don’t know about someone else hospitalized, we have no way of discovering that person any more. Hospitals do NOT call pastors/churches to inform them of admissions, and have not for decades. So, please, call, if you want us to know.

We try to be available in emergencies. Do not hesitate to call the church (373-6424), if you have not seen a pastor and would like to request a visit. If you call the church office after hours and get the recording, keying option ❸ will send your call directly to the pastor on call. No name is automatically put on a printed prayer list. We ask permission before we include a name on our printed prayer list. Please, let us know if you want to be on the prayer list or be visited. ~Your FLC Pastors
