Every January, the Christian church worldwide marks the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. This ecumenical “octave,” or eight-day observance, lasts from January 18 (the Feast of St. Peter) to January 25 (the Feast of St. Paul). The week is based on Jesus’ prayer to his heavenly Father in John 17:21 that his followers “may all be one … so that the world may believe that you have sent me” (ESV). Jesus knew that if Christians were fiercely divided, people outside the faith wouldn’t want to learn more about him.

Every January, many Christians resolve to read the entire Bible in one year. That’s a worthy goal, but God doesn’t require us to read a certain number of verses or chapters per day. Instead, he tells us to simply be in his Word — and thus be with him — so he can grow our faith, light our path and assure us of his love and forgiveness. God’s Word is a precious gift, but we need to “unwrap” it!

HAPPY NEW YEAR to our First Lutheran Family. It is the first days of 2019 and it’s a time to think about new beginnings. If we’re in the comfort of our homes reading this article, we must be thankful for the past year of 2018, because it’s only by the grace of God that we’ve made it to see this day or any day. For in him we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28). As we recognize this truth, let us begin this New Year with confession of any shortcomings and failures over the past year. We begin this day with thankful hearts for God has blessed us with bright and endless possibilities of another, day, month, or year. In writing my new book entitled, A Hop, Skip, and Jump through the Psalms, I’m delving into some of the human emotions highlighted in the Psalms. The Psalms give voice to our feelings, which include our mountain top moments and our monumental failures. The book begins with Psalm 33 that bids us to begin this day— joyfully with a song, with joy in our heart and a song upon our lips. Why? Perhaps in recognition of the Acts truth above or any of God’s many truths, but chiefly because the word of the Lord is right and true; he is faithful in all he does (Psalm 33: 4). It is our New Year prayer that as you grow in wisdom, love, and knowledge of the Lord, that He will bless you mightily, fill you with joy, and bestow upon you his wonderful peace. January 21, 1951- sanctuary light, which burns day and night, reminding us of the eternal presence of God, was dedicated in memory of Earl Clifford Billings by his parents. January 25, 1973 - annual meeting pot luck supper was very successful - 13 potlucks hosted at the same time - 250 in attendance. January 21, 1979 - first televised Peace and Power broadcast over KAAL-TV of Austin. January 1, 1988 - First Lutheran Church became part of the EVANGELICAL Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). JANUARY 5, 2004 - Terrazzo flooring poured in sanctuary replacing original cork board flooring. Services held in Bethany Hall. Major sanctuary cleaning. Bible racks added to pews.

As we enter the Season of Epiphany, as cold as it may be outside, the days are beginning to get longer as we head back to brighter and warmer days. This beautiful, tranquil season always brings me to my knees in thanksgiving and celebration for the Light of Christ coming into this dark world. Here is a beautiful poem by M.S. Lowndes:

Lord, you are the light this world desperately needs. Let our lamps keep burning bright so the lost may come to see the light of your love--burning brightly in our hearts-chasing away the darkness--revealing who you are. May your glory be seen in everything we do--in our everyday happenings. May our lives acknowledge you--no matter where you send us--whatever land we live in. May your light pierce through the darkness--penetrating deep within-- to stir up desire to truly seek your face--and come fully into your light and receive your saving grace. WE NEED YOU FOR THE CENTENNIAL--LENT--EASTER CHOIR!!!!!!!! The commitment is ONLY for February, March, and April. We practice on Wednesday Evenings and sing for Sunday Morning Worship at 8 AM three Sundays out of four. We ARE the First Lutheran Church Choir and we meet on Wednesdays at 6:30 in the choir room. This choir will prepare for Lent, Holy Week, Easter, and the Centennial Celebration Service starting in February. This is your chance to make a real contribution to our worship and it is a short-term commitment. Come on Down--Please!!! First Lutheran Church Hand Bell Choir--Open to ages youth through adult--Wednesday Rehearsals from 5:30 to 6:25 PM. We are looking for music readers for bells! Bells are open to all ages for those who read music and are willing to commit. Bells resume in late January for the second half of the season. Men’s Fellowship Hey, Men! It’s a New Year and time to resolve to grow in faith. One way of doing that is to get together with other men in a small group to discuss faith issues. So, we have a group starting in January to do just that. Here’s the scoop: Wednesday mornings; 6:30–7:30 am, beginning January 2, 2019 at Snap Fitness in Downtown Albert Lea The front door will be unlocked. Just walk through to the back and go down stairs to the lower level. The book we’re using is Unoffendable: How Just One Change Can Make All of Life Better We have several books on hand to borrow or buy ($15). Come regularly, or come occasionally, whenever you can. Bring a friend if you’d like to. You don’t have to be a Bible scholar to attend. You can just come and listen or join in on the discussion. It’s a low stress get together...really. We laugh, and we talk some sports, too, of course. One of the men who came last year said, and I quote: “It’s the best hour of my week.” Interested, but a bad time for you? Give me a call and let me know what might be a good time for you, and we’ll try to set up another time for some great men’s fellowship. No obligation, just opportunity.
