Virus & Vaccine—Unseen Threat & Unseen Protection As the New Year begins during this coronavirus pandemic the hope of the world seems to be the vaccines that are being developed and already being administered. It’s nearly miraculous how they have been developed so quickly (at “warp speed”). Here are a couple of observations: We cannot see the virus, nor can we see it at work when it begins to attack ones body. We cannot see the virus, but a blood test can determine if one has it. We cannot see the virus, but we can see it’s effects on people who become ill from it. We cannot see the virus, but we can see the outward protections like masks and social distancing. We cannot see the vaccine, nor can we see the internal protection it affords in the bodies of people. We cannot see the vaccine, but we can see how it is applied to one’s body. We cannot see the vaccine, but we hope to soon see the outward changes in our society as the vaccines take effect in more and more people. Are you still with me? I think we can draw a spiritual parallel here. We cannot see the spiritual condition of a person’s heart, but it effects our life now and for eternity. We cannot see the spiritual condition of a person’s heart, but God can. We cannot see the spiritual condition of a person’s heart, but often we can see it’s effect on a person’s life for good or for not so good. We cannot see the spiritual condition of a person’s heart, but there are some outward practices we can do that affect and protect our hearts. Ash Wednesday— February 17, 2021 Ash Wednesday starts Lent, the church-year season that begins a time of penitence and spiritual renewal. Lent helps us reflect on Jesus’ death. Some people give up a luxury or vice during Lent as a form of self-denial; others undertake a project that benefits others.

ALTAR GUILD AT FLC The Altar Guild is made up of approximately 25 First Lutheran Church women who serve faithfully in maintaining our altar area in the sanctuary and chapel. They serve the Lord through preparing communion, making sure the baptismal font has warm water for baptisms, washing chalices after communion, and filling all the candles with oil. They set out the flowers and arrange all the plants for Easter, Pentecost and Christmas. In addition, they donate and arrange the fruits and vegetables that adorn the altar on Thanksgiving. Even through the pandemic, the altar guild has been coming in on Mondays to clean, fill candles, change paraments and put out decorations and plants for the various holidays. The group hasn’t been able to have their usual meetings, but they have kept in contact through e-mails and phone calls. It’s been an unusual and disruptive year, but we hope to bring back a sense of normalcy in 2021. The altar guild is open to all, so if you would like to join us, we would love to have you.

Spirit of Giving Fall Appeal Results As of 12/21/2020, 145 Statement of Intent cards had been submitted to the church office.
5 respondents were unable to set a specific goal for their giving in 2021. 140 respondents set weekly, monthly or annual goals aggregating to $319,601 of planned giving for 2021. Thanks to all who responded in faith with sharing their giving goals. What a great response in these difficult times. To our faithful God be the glory! You can still participate by filling out a paper "Statement of Intent" available in the church office, or clicking the link on the church website, or by scanning the QR code here: To discern your response to God’s call to give: Pray for Guidance Count your Blessings Trust God Grow in Generosity Set a Goal to Give Share that Goal with your Church Experience Joy And, remember: Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH ANNUAL MEETING The FLC Church Council hereby calls for the reconvening of the First Lutheran Church Annual Meeting (which was recessed) in the Sanctuary on Sunday, January 31, 2021, at 11:00 am, or as soon as possible after the morning worship service. Business items that are in the plans include: 1. Another look at the 2021 Budgets in light of 2020 final financial statements with possible changes to be adopted; and 2. Presentation and proposed adoption of numerous and extensive amendments and revisions to the FLC Constitution to bring it into compliance with the ELCA model constitution for congregations. FLC members can pick up printed copies of the revised constitution in the church office for their review. Also, we hope to get a link on the FLC website for members to access the revised constitution from their Internet connected home computers. In case of inclement weather, reconvening of the annual meeting will be postponed one week. It is hoped that a Zoom meeting connection will be set up that can connect FLC members to participate in the Annual Meeting remotely. MEETING GUIDELINES FOR FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH All meetings must be scheduled through the FLC Office to be placed on the Building Calendar. Meetings must be within normal business hours M-Th 8-5. If your meeting needs to be after hours, a staff member must be present. To coordinate a staff person to be present, please contact the FLC office.
Meetings are limited to the Multi-Purpose Room, Bethany Hall and the Parlor

UPDATE FROM THE CALL COMMITTEE As a committee we want to update you on the progress of the Call search for associate pastor. We have had some interviews at this point. We will continue to get candidates from synod to interview as they come in. The committee is preparing for the next steps of possible second interviews. At this point we have no candidate for a second interview. Rev. Barb Streed of synod is in communication with us and will forward candidates. The committee asks that you keep us in prayer and First Lutheran Church for this search. As chair I can tell you that our concern is for the right person for this calling. You told us what we needed and we will pursue that with much prayer. Thank you once again for your patience. We are actively working for you as a congregation.

New Year Greetings from the FLC Transition Team Many thanks from the Transition Team to the Worship, Music and Arts Team and the many volunteers who made our live nativity, “Love Came Down,” such a blessing for our congregation and surrounding community. We would also like to thank all who came out in support of this Christmas story celebration with their presence and financial gifts that made this ministry possible. The Transition Team would also like to extend heartfelt thanks to the congregation for their continued encouragement and support of our work during a challenging year. We are listening to you. We continually strive to adapt to our changing circumstances, exploring and implementing new ways to address the needs of our congregation and community. This year we have overseen the process of improvements in our communication pathways, the delivery of faith formation content, enhancing our connections with the larger church and reaching out into our community to respond with compassion to those in need. Although much about our life and ministry has temporarily changed, you—the people of First Lutheran Church—have stood alongside us during this past year. A LITTLE HUMOR T'was 3 weeks before Christmas, And all through the town, People wore masks, That covered their frown.
Now it’s December And cases are spiking, Wave two has arrived, Much to our disliking.
The frown had begun Way back in the Spring, When a global pandemic Changed everything.
It’s true that this year Has had sadness a plenty, We’ll never forget The year 2020.
They called it corona, But unlike the beer, It didn’t bring good times, It didn’t bring cheer.
And just ‘round the corner The holiday season, But why be merry? Is there even one reason?
Airplanes were grounded, Travel was banned. Borders were closed Across air, sea and land.
To decorate the house And put up the tree, Who will see it, No one but me.
As the world entered lockdown To flatten the curve, The economy halted, And folks lost their nerve.
But outside my window The snow gently falls And I think to myself, Let’s deck the halls!
From March to July We rode the first wave, People stayed home, They tried to behave.
So, I gather the ribbon, The garland and bows, As I play those old carols, My happiness grows.
When summer emerged The lockdown was lifted. But away from caution, Many folks drifted.
Christmas is not cancelled And neither is hope. If we lean on each other, I know we can cope ❤️❤️

MEN’S BOOK DISCUSSION/STUDY Men’s Book Discussion/Study Resumes January 13, 2021 The Men’s Searchers Group plans to meet again in January 6:30–7:30 AM each Wednesday in the FLC Parlor. The Book to be discussed is The Great Divorce by C. S. Lewis. Come regularly or occasionally.
All men are welcome. Enjoy the fellowship. If you want coffee or something, bring your own.
JANUARY 2021 SPECIAL OUTREACH CAUSE The Special Outreach Cause for January 2021, is the Weekly drive-through food ministry, resuming on Thursday, January 7, 2021. Funding is needed at $200–$300 weekly to serve the approximately 100 meals each week.
DECEMBER 2020 FLC COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS 1. COVID-19 strategies In person worship remains suspended. Live broadcast of Peace and Power on KAAL continues on Sunday mornings along with the KATE radio broadcast. The worship service is also posted on the FLC website . Staff continues to consult with the local Department of Health and ELCA to evolve the FLC operations as appropriate. 2. The FLC drive through nativity experience was deemed a success. There were over 230 cars that drove through. The Council expressed appreciation to the many volunteers and donors to make this event a success. Undesignated donations from the free will offering will be given to support the FLC food ministry program. 3. The initial review and comparison of the FLC constitution to the ELCA model constitution has been completed. The findings will be presented to the congregation in January 2021.
