THE MISSION OF FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH IS: TO GATHER, EQUIP, AND EMPOWER PEOPLE TO JOYFULLY DO 1
CHRIST’S WORK.
Rejoice in the Lord
Dear Friends in Christ, For whom do we exist? It’s good to ponder this often at all stages of life. The first question: in “The Westminster Shorter Catechism” (1649) asks, “What is the chief end of man?” The response is, “Man’s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.” Martin Luther’s Small Catechism states in its explanation to the first commandment: “We should fear, love and trust God above anything else.” From these I would conclude that we exist for God. In First John 4:7-8 we read: Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. From this I would conclude that the living out of our existence for God is realized when we love. Later in that chapter in verses 19-21we read: We love because He first loved us. Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, Whom they have not seen. And He has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister. This challenge and opportunity to love one another is a calling from God to the individual and also to the community, i.e., it’s a personal, individual calling, as well as a corporate calling. Jesus’ forgiveness, which we in turn give to each other makes this all possible. We exist together for the glory of God, which is lived out in our love for Him and for others. I really like our First Lutheran Church motto: First Lutheran Church—F.L.C.—For the Love of Christ First Corinthians 10:31, reminds us, “…whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” This is why Church, the Body of Christ, exists. And, in Mark 12:30-31 Jesus reminds us: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. ’The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” During this month of February, when Valentine’s Day rolls around, one can’t help but think of love and how it’s lived out in our lives. One thing we can know is that when we love and forgive others, God is glorified, and we fulfill the purpose of our existence. We exist for God and for others. This realization pulls one away from the self-centeredness that is the root of sin. It helps make this world a better place. The church exists for us to join together to glorify God and love one another and love the world in need. That’s what we do in corporate worship, where we worship the Triune God and are encouraged in living our lives for Him, exercise generosity and just have sweet fellowship with each other. Soli Deo Gloria! (To God alone be the glory!) ...as we gather, live and love for each other. + + + Some other notes: We are in the process of the new Lighting Project in the Sanctuary. New LED bulbs have been installed in many of the fixtures with more to come. This will save electrical power and the high replacement costs for the old-style bulbs. It should improve lighting for Peace & Power. The new controls will improve efficiency and better control lighting, especially for special events, concerts, and programs. There may be some disruptions during the process of getting all of the electrical and electronic controls installed, but we trust the final result will enhance the worship experience in the Sanctuary each week. We observed the 40th Anniversary of Peace & Power in January. Soli Deo Gloria! The Centennial cookbook is about to be released. The Centennial banners with pictures of all former pastors are in the works. (The original pictures are not lost.) The other Centennial committees are doing a great job preparing and sprucing up our beautiful building. May God be glorified in our celebrations. In the Light of His love, 2

♫ ♫ ♫ MUSICAL REFLECTIONS ♫ ♫ ♫ Happy February--the month when we celebrate 'love'!
God IS love and He loves us. We know that in our minds, but often we don’t live that way. The reality of God’s love surrounds us day by day, as revealed in God's Word and through Jesus Christ. John 3:16: For God so LOVED the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but would have everlasting life. Our God of promise shows us every day that: God’s love is steadfast and unchanging! God’s love comforts us! God’s love is revealed to us through Jesus Christ! God’s love is poured into us through the Holy Spirit! God’s love compels us to love one another! Valentine's Day is a day when we tend to go 'all out' to show our love to others. God's example of love is a constant flow of love--all day long-every day! Not only in this 'love' month, but in all of our lives, I pray that we live in the love of God and live to show that love to others, as Jesus taught us. Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 1 John 4:7-8

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT FLC February Centennial Celebration Community Engagement
We are giving thanks to the Humane Society and SEMCAC. We will be accepting donations for the Humane Society and SEMCAC every Sunday in February along with having the thank you cards to write on! Here are a few items that the Human Society is requesting: dog & cat toys/treats, dog food, baking soda, bathroom cleaner, dog leashes/collars and bowls/beds. The full list of items the Humane Society needs may be picked up at the Community Engagement table or in the church office. The
SEMCAC shelter needs basic need items that we use every day such as shampoo and conditioner, deodorant, soap bars, laundry soap, diapers, toilet paper, and toothpaste/toothbrushes! Our goal is to make a box pyramid near the community engagement table in the gathering space. Individuals can bring in donated items anytime of the week and the boxes will be ready to fill! There is a complete list on Facebook and the slides before services. Thank you for your generosity and gratitude!"
Special Congregational Meeting February 24th at 11:45 in Bethany Hall The Agenda items will be: Amendments to the 2019 Budget Bylaw Changes

VISITING & LETTER WRITING TO IMMIGRANT/REFUGEE PEOPLE Conversations with Friends (CWF) invites English and Spanish speakers (age 22 and older) to become visitors or letter writers to those in the Freeborn County Adult Detention Center. CWF volunteers visit as a group in a classroom setting, attending at least one visit per quarter. CWF letter writers commit to writing one letter each week. This is an opportunity to live the Gospel by accompanying those experiencing tremendously challenging times. Our brothers and sisters in ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) detention are suffering from isolation, uncertainty and/or fear as they face deportation and, as a consequence, likely permanent separation from their spouses, children, relatives, and friends. They have lived and worked in the U.S. for a median of about fifteen years, many as long as twenty and even thirty years. Through our ministry they come to know that we in the community truly care; they are not abandoned, not alone. Training is Saturday, February 16th, 2019, 9:00 am–1:00 pm, at a location in Albert Lea to be announced. After attending, there is no obligation, simply an invitation. For more information, please contact Pastor John Holt at 507373-6424, Carolyn Smith of CWF at 507-402-8299, or visit our website: www.conversationswithfriendsMN.org. Personal Visitation by the Pastors To support people at the time of illness or injury, pastors do make personal visits in hospitals, homes or Care Centers. Many hospitals, like the Mayo’s Methodist & St. Mary’s Hospitals in Rochester no longer give pastors access to lists of patients. So, if we happen to be there visiting someone, and we don’t know about someone else hospitalized, we have no way of discovering that person any more. Hospitals do NOT call pastors/churches to inform them of admissions, and have not for decades. So, please, call, if you want us to know.
We try to be available in emergencies. Do not hesitate to call the church (373-6424), if you have not seen a pastor and would like to request a visit. If you call the church office after hours and get the recording, keying option ❸ will send your call directly to the pastor on call. No name is automatically put on a printed prayer list. We ask permission before we include a name on our printed prayer list. Please let us know if you want to be on the prayer list or be visited. ~Your FLC Pastors
