A new member welcome reception for all who have joined in 2020 and 2021 will be held Sunday, December 12 at 9 a.m. in the church parlor. This will be an opportunity to meet the pastors, church staff, fellow new members, and other active volunteers in the church. Refreshments will be served. RSVPs to the office (373-6424) are appreciated, but not required.
The FLC Nominating Committee presents candidates for the upcoming call committee. The candidates are: Nicole Morrison, Jennifer Levisen, Dan Liebsch, Lilah Aas, Tom Larson, Bob Ackland, Roger Oberg, and Tom Hovde. The candidates will be selected by vote at the continuation of the Annual Meeting on January 16th at 9:15 a.m.

A few words from Pastor Roger Fun RANDOM facts (in no particular order) about Pastor Joy Knoppel (she/her) 1. My favorite color is RED! We’re talking Taylor Swift/red lipstick/rosebud red. 2. I love lasagna. I’m actually nuts about lasagna. It is one of the few dishes I can make for myself.
3. I hate cooking. I am excellent at cleaning up though, so if you cook I will 100% clean up afterwards. 4. No, I am currently not seeing anyone and do not have any children. Yes, I am open to both one day. 5. I love international travel. I have had the privilege of visiting Costa Rica, China (multiple areas), Hong-Kong, Taiwan, India, Paris, Prague, Germany, and Norway. I also had a ten hour layover in Switzerland where I got off the plane, found some gelato in the city park, and then fell asleep in that park until my next flight. I’m not sure if this one technically counts…
6. I care deeply about doing anti-human trafficking work. In the future I hope that FLC will be open to fighting for this cause too. 7. Seven is my favorite number. 8. I have a puppy named Boba. He is a bernedoodle (hypoallergenic) who loves being with people and eating peanut butter. I am going to work towards getting him trained as an official therapy dog as I would love to do ministry with him in hospitals, nursing homes, etc. I believe that animals are excellent caretakers. 9. I’m a straightforward kind of person. If you want to know something about me, just ask. I am extremely honest and will tell you if I feel uncomfortable. 10. I care about the church. I care about doing justice, loving kindness, and walking humbly with our God (Micah 6:8). I care about unity and welcoming the poor and the marginalized. I care about learning who God is and how God is working in our lives. I care about having hard conversations and being uncomfortable, because being uncomfortable means that something new is on the horizon. Most of all, I care about reminding each and every one of you that you have been beautifully and wonderfully created in the image of God. Know that your life is precious and know that you are deeply loved by our Creator.

Shared Ministry Information Just as the seasons of the year change, First Lutheran Church is moving into an exciting new season of growth and change. The Holy Spirit has inspired us to try something new, and Fusion was born. As we move forward, leadership has decided to embrace a new collaborative approach to ministry. Shared Ministry empowers pastors, staff, lay leaders and congregation members to discover their passion in ministry and find ways to serve the congregation, the community and the world. God blesses each of us with talents and gifts and sends us out to share the Good News of Jesus Christ in many and varied ways. Shared Ministry allows our pastors to work on an equal basis of shared work and worship. It also engages the congregation to share in that work and ministry. Expectations:
- Whatever is discussed with one pastor in pastoral confidence will be shared with the other pastor in order that everyone may experience the benefit of combined wisdom and care. - Responsibilities and planning for funerals, baptisms, and weddings will be shared by both pastors. A rotation schedule or other flexible system will be determined by the pastors. - For the present, both pastors will have Fridays as their day off. - Sharing of Ministry involves not only the Pastors but the staff and members of the congregation. - Suggestions for new ministries or changes to present ministries will be welcome. This is an evolving process and these expectations and job descriptions as given below will be subject to revision and change as we move forward. - Mutual Ministry will be another resource in the transition to a successful shared ministry. - You, as a member of First Lutheran Congregation, are an important part of Shared Ministry.

If you have any questions, please reach out to one of our Transition Team members listed above, they would be glad to help. Thank you for 25 years of generosity. From my first timid requests for funds of support in 1997 to my final year of participation in 2021, I have been filled with a sense of overwhelming gratitude to the members of First Lutheran Church. Not only have you donated to a cause I love and support, but you have also sent notes of encouragement and prayers. Additionally, three times First Lutheran has fed the riders and support crew with feasts that remain legendary. For all of these I give my deepest thanks. This year I raised the largest amount I ever have: $14,325.00. My 25 year total is $220,683.35. Many families in the Albert Lea area have benefited from your generosity as they were able to purchase a home. Operation Christmas Child Another year for collecting boxes for Operation Christmas Child has just been completed. Our church has given
109 boxes to be sent to children around the world. Thank you to all who generously contributed boxes, gave postage and sent your prayers. You have again shared your love of Christ.

Reduce stress at the holidays…..
Reduce Stress at the holidays is a theme that we hear every year. There are some very practical (no cost) tactics that can actually help. Laugh. It’s impossible to be stressed when you are laughing. Get moving. Exercise is not only a good distraction; it also boosts norepinephrine. Meditate. Stress increases the levels of harmful LDL cholesterol that causes dangerous plaque buildup in the arteries. Meditation has been known to lessen these levels. Take a mini vacation. Our brains are not wired to be on all the time and our bodies aren’t meant to be stimulated 18 hours a day. You don’t have to travel— just turn off your cell phone, stay away from all types of media, and avoid e-mail for half a day. It will make you feel as if you are on vacation without leaving home. Last, reach out to family and friends, including your FLC family.
Parish Health and Wellness is looking for Families and Individuals that are interested in making a difference in the lives of our homebound congregation members! This involves visiting a member(s) of our congregation on a monthly basis at your convenience. The goal is to simply visit with them, take prayer requests, show them they are cared about and, most importantly, build a relationship that can make a difference in your life and the person you are visiting. Epiphany Party Wednesday January 5th 4:30 pm Families are invited to come decorate cookies, craft, sing songs, and make a chalk blessing in the Sanctuary from 4:30 - 6:00 pm. If you would like, stay for a pizza dinner at 6:00 followed by worship at 6:30 pm
Library Children’s Section We have a Children’s Corner Section in the library that was set up a couple of years ago. The shelves are at child level with four small chairs to sit on and read. These books can be checked out or enjoyed while Mom and Dad are choosing their favorite reading material. Some of the books and authors are, ”Miss Fannies Hat” by Jan Karon, “The World is Awake”, “A Celebration of Everyday Blessings” by Linsey Davis, and “I’ve Loved you forever” by Hoda Kotb. They can also read books about Bible characters such as “Joseph and His Brothers” “Baby Jesus is Born” and ‘Baby Moses and the Princess”. There are a few older favorites as well like “The Giving Tree”. Some of these books the library has purchased but we do accept new or gently used books. Please bring the children and let them explore the wonders of reading.

STARS Mentoring Program Give the gift of friendship this holiday season! STARS mentoring helps youth who are in need of guidance and support by providing volunteer adult mentors. MENTORS ARE: Role models, advocates, cheerleaders, and a friend who makes a positive difference in a child’s life. People who provide guidance and support for at-risk children. Meeting with their mentee 2-4 times per month to have fun and do activities together. STARS (Success Through Adults Reaching Students) is a non-profit organization that serves both Freeborn County and the eastern portion of Faribault County.
