Rejoice in the Lord
* Dear Friends in Christ, “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.” This iconic verse from Luke 2:11 (King James Version) has carried the Christmas story to many hearts over centuries. How can we be prepared to receive this good news afresh again each year? We have Advent. Advent is the season in the church year before Christmas. It begins this year on Sunday, December 2. Advent is the time we prepare for the celebration of Christmas. It’s good to use this time to prepare our hearts and minds. The term, “advent” can have many meanings—start, introduction and arrival. For us as Christians, the definition of Advent might best be: beginning. Advent is observed so we can prepare for the beginning of Jesus’ earthly ministry and the beginning of new life for all of humankind. It seems much of our culture embraces the celebration of Christmas, or at least the secular celebration, with gifts, gatherings and garland. As soon as the Thanksgiving turkey has been eaten, if not before, we enter the Christmas season, and Advent is rolled right into it, if not forgotten. I recently read what a pastor wrote about Advent and Christmas as really being about beginnings. Christmas is just the beginning. Without the cross and the empty tomb we’re missing the true meaning. The saying goes that Jesus went “from cradle to cross to crown.” With only the birth, it’s just an interesting story. If we only had His birth and death, it would just be another tragic story as a footnote in history. But with His Resurrection and Ascension to reign on high, we know the cradle, the cross and the crown! That’s what makes His humble birth so spectacular! Another way to say it is: Without the Cross and the Empty Tomb, Christmas really isn’t that much. But with “the cross and the crown” the cradle, which was really the most humble manger, makes it a “WOW!” event of the highest position. The Son of Almighty God came to earth to be with us and become the Messiah, our Savior, Redeemer and Lord. It is LOVE in the flesh! Now that’s really something to celebrate! “Oh, come, let us adore Him... Christ the Lord! Blessings to all who joyously sing: “Glory to the new-born King!” In the Light of His love,

♫ ♫ ♫ MUSICAL REFLECTIONS ♫ ♫ ♫ Merry Christmas Season! In a few days, we will gather in our beautiful Sanctuary and light candles and sing, "Silent Night, Holy Night--all is calm...". Well, the truth is, there is not a lot that is silent or holy or calm about the holiday hustle and bustle that seems to infect our world between October and December. I am far from cynical, but the world--its disguised attractions and distractions--loud and unholy-often displaces the silence and holiness and the calming peace of the true meaning of Christmas. I found this little poem and wanted to share it: You won't need a special star to find me--I'm no longer just in Bethlehem, I'm right there where you are. You may not be aware of me--amid the loud celebrations. You'll have to look beyond the stores and all the decorations. But if you take a moment from your list of things to do--and listen to your heart, You'll find I'm there for you. You're the reason that I came, and you'll find me... in the stillness--in the quiet--in the calmness as I'm whispering your name.

PLEASE CONSIDER JOINING US FOR the CENTENNIAL--LENT--EASTER CHOIR!!!!!!!! The commitment is ONLY for February, March, and April. We practice on Wednesday Evenings and sing for Sunday Morning Worship at 8 AM three Sundays out of four. We ARE the First Lutheran Church Choir and we meet on Wednesdays at 6:30 in the choir room. We sing most Sundays at the 8 AM Peace & Power Service. This choir will prepare for Lent, Holy Week, Easter, and the Centennial Celebration Service starting in February. WE NEED YOU!!! COME ON DOWN!!! First Lutheran Church Hand Bell Choir--Open to ages youth through adult--Wednesday Rehearsals from 5:30 to 6:25 PM. We need bell players! Bells are open to all ages for those who read music and are willing to commit. Spirit Express Band and Singers--Open to ages youth through adult--Tuesday Rehearsals from 7:15 to 8:45 PM. THE SPIRIT OF GIVING TEAM November is coming to a close and the preparations begin for celebrating the birth of our Lord. Thanksgiving reminded us of all the blessings we have as we shared food and fellowship with friends and loved ones. Over the past several weeks and again at the annual meeting, we heard about a shortfall in our giving that is worrisome if we want to continue our growth and outreach into the community. We have talked about what is needed to wipe out the deficit and start a new budget year whole and without concerns that programs will have to be cut or reduced. We are about to celebrate 100 years of ministry. That’s a very big deal! God has richly blessed our congregation with every imaginable gift. All that we have God has provided. As you and your family prayerfully consider what you can do to help reduce the deficit, please consider the part your faith plays in your decision, how much you trust God and believe his promises, did you pray about it, do you recognize the need, the possible results if we don’t clear the deficit and your financial ability to give that addition to your regular offering. At this joyous time of year when we are giving to many causes and planning gifts for friends and family, it is important to remember the greatest gift any of us has ever received...the gift of our salvation because God sacrificed His Son, Our Lord for our sins. The ultimate example of sacrificial giving. Let us love one another and the community we live in enough to make our own sacrificial gift of returning part of what we have been blessed with so that First Lutheran Maycontinue to provide a meeting place, a welcome home, and a source for spreading the gospel message here and everywhere. WHAT’S HAPPENING AT FLC
The cookbooks have been ordered. They will be available some time in January 2019. Due to cost changes and shipping costs, the price for the cookbooks will be $16 each. The cookbook is a 3 ring padded binder containing 610 recipes. When asked, we said the cookbook would be $15. We got the final costs on submission and found that $16 is the correct price. Thank you for your patience and understanding. While compiling the cookbook, we received 4 or 5 recipes that called for raw eggs. We contacted the U of M Extension Service and were told that it was safer not to use any recipes where the eggs were not cooked. We tried to call each person who had submitted one of these recipes, but we wanted to make sure you were aware why the recipe was omitted in the event we missed anyone. Regular and Holiday gift certificates to give in place of the actual cookbook are available at the Welcome Center and in the Church Office. If you want to reserve a book before they arrive, you may do so by signing up in the church office or by calling Marge La France or Jo Hanson. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Looking for a book to read during the holiday season? I would like to recommend The Christmas Box by Richard Paul Evans. A young couple and their 4 year old daughter move from their cramped apartment to the home of a widow named Mary. Their move came because of an ad asking for a young couple to live in and care for an elderly lady. While moving into their quarters, Richard discovers a Christmas box in the attic. The box originally was meant to hold a Bible, but several letters are found inside written by the owner to a deceased 6
loved one. The discovery of the box and its letters leads to Richard discovering the real meaning of Christmas. Have a tissue nearby, as this story may bring a tear or two to the eyes of the reader. There are several other books on the shelves of our church library by the same author. Come explore the library for other stories of the Christmas season waiting to be read as you sit by your lighted Christmas tree sipping on a cup of hot chocolate or hot apple cider. May each and everyone have a very blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year from the First Lutheran Library Board.

HELPING OTHERS IN NEED The Social Ministry Commission is sponsoring a Salvation Army Christmas Angel Tree & Mitten Tree (Tree’s set up in the Gathering Space) A few pointers: You can take a tag or tags and purchase something for a child of that age. (Most people spend $15-25). Return your gifts unwrapped to the tree by Friday, December 7, 2018 with the Angel Tree tag. If you would like you may include the wrapping paper as part of the gift and the parent can wrap it. The Mitten Tree is there for your donations of hats, mittens, and scarves. These items will be taken to local charities for distribution at Christmas time. Help make someone’s Holiday Season a little “warmer”.
Report from Happiness Is a Blanket quilters,
pillow cases, blankets and mattress pads. We cannot use down quilts or rubber backed fabric. We always welcome anyone interested in helping. We meet on Tuesday mornings from 8:00 to 11:00 am. On October 13, 2018, the quilters sent 123 quilts You do not have to know how to sew as there are on the Lutheran World Relief Van. During the time various jobs to be done, such as tying, ripping, presssince the last Lutheran World Relief drive we have given the Salvation Army 4 comforters, 2 blankets and ing and cutting blocks. 10 quilts. We also donated 1 quilt to the American Legion Auxiliary. A very special thank you to all who participated in Operation Christmas Child—from the Sunday School class that brought their boxes as a group to each individual who packed their own to all the generous donors of money for postage. Each of you should feel good in your hearts for sharing the love of our Lord. Thank you to all for another generous year —122 boxes were given from our First Lutheran family this year. 12

Personal Visitation by the Pastors To support people at the time of illness or injury, pastors do make personal visits in hospitals, homes or Care Centers. Many hospitals, like the Mayo’s Methodist & St. Mary’s Hospitals in Rochester no longer give pastors access to lists of patients. So, if we happen to be there visiting someone, and we don’t know about someone else hospitalized, we have no way of discovering that person any more. Hospitals do NOT call pastors/churches to inform them of admissions, and have not for decades. So, please, call, if you want us to know.
