Preaching series for August We prayerfully consider our liturgy and worship services each week. It is our hope that you are enjoying our summer series on Marriage and Peter: Through the Eyes of Matthew. Our third installment for August is on the Psalms. We have chosen four Psalms that will bless us in our journey with the Lord. The Psalms are like an electrical outlet, there’s power as soon as you plug in. Get Zapped!!!
August 5:
Psalm 1
August 12:
Psalm 61
August 19:
Psalm 51
August 26:
Psalm 32
If you have been timid in your faith then you’ll really enjoy the jolt of this preaching series on the Psalms.
THE MISSION OF FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH IS: TO GATHER, EQUIP, AND EMPOWER PEOPLE TO JOYFULLY DO 1
CHRIST’S WORK.
PRE-KINDERGARTEN AT FLC & ROOM CHANGES In June, the First Lutheran Church Council entered into a 2-year lease agreement with Independent School District #241 (Albert Lea Area Schools) to lease space for Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) classes for 4 year-olds in our community. VPK will use what has been our Youth Room on the lower level of the church. The classes run in two sessions daily 8:00–11:05 am and 12:00–3:05 pm in accordance with the school calendar. The School District is making the major needed improvements to the room, with a few things being done by FLC’s building staff. The lease agreement is a matter of public record and can be found on the School Board website. VPK had formerly been in Halverson School, then The Children’s Center, but new regulations required the need to find a new space. The connection for this partnership came as a result of a meeting with the local RICC group (Rural Impact County Challenge), who are working on the need for additional child-care in our community. As a result, plans have been formulated to move the FLC Youth Room to the 2 nd floor of the church. Plans have been made and approved by the FLC Council to remove some partitions, enlarging some rooms, to accommodate Sunday School needs along with Youth Ministry needs. Many of these rooms are unused or used for storage. The storage can be moved up to the unused 3 rd level. Much of the work can be done by volunteers. The main cost will be for carpeting that is needed for noise abatement and air conditioning. We already have $15,000 on hand that will go a long way toward this need. Here are drawings of the spaces: Today and New Plan.
We have prayerfully considered these plans with the FLC staff and leadership teams. What an opportunity to have up to 40 families served through VPK at First Lutheran Church! It’s a great community partnership. “Ponder anew what the Almighty would do.” What about 2nd floor accessibility for special needs students? Right now we do not have anyone in the Junior-Senior High age group that participates in Youth Group that needs elevator access to the 2 nd Floor. This could change in the future. We also have additional unused floor space on the 3 rd floor that could be used to serve community needs if we had an elevator serving all 4 levels of the Parish House. We have a team studying the feasibility of an elevator and where it might be located. There may be wider community resources that could help fund that eventually as we are open to further partnerships for community needs. Another idea in the works is a “Quiet Space” for a parent with small children in the Sanctuary. This would be under the Bell Choir loft. Three pews would be moved to make an open space where a child could be brought during the service; the child could move around or sit quietly on the floor with the parent right there to supervise and still be in worship. This would be one more way to ensure parents with small children feel welcome in worship. The nursery would continue to serve a valuable purpose as well for the youngest of children who need it. Please pray for our continued efforts to meet our church and community needs. 2 May the Lord direct our steps. ~ Pastor John Holt

REFLECTIONS ♫ ♫ ♫
PARTS TO WHOLE!!!
Music is such a vital part of worship. We want to keep the tradition of an SATB Choir burning brightly at First Lutheran Church. WE NEED YOU!!! WE NEED ALL OF YOU WHO CAN SING AND WILL COMMIT!!! Choral music is written in 4 parts--Sopano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass. For us to sing as--actually to be--an SATB Choir, we need ALL four parts well-covered!!! We are like a sports team--we need depth in the ranks to consistently produce vibrant, full-sounding, glorious SATB choral music. I know, I know--it is hard to find the time to commit to choir rehearsals and Sunday AM Services. If you have the gift, please open your hearts and voices and listen to God's call to be a part of something that is bigger than any one of us. IT IS THE WHOLE that matters…. but each individual when joined together makes up the whole! In 1 Corinthians 12:12-27, we read, "There is one body, but it has many parts. But all its many parts make up one body. It is the same with Christ. We were all baptized by one Holy Spirit. And so we are formed into one body. It did not matter whether we were Jews or Gentiles, slaves or free people. We were all given the same Spirit to drink. So the body is not made up of just one part. It has many parts." YOU are one of the parts that we are looking for. WE HAVE OPTIONS FOR YOU TO CHOOSE! If you don't want to commit for a whole year, consider committing for either the Advent/Christmas Choir this fall OR the Lent/Easter Choir in winter/spring...... We love it when you CHOOSE BOTH!!!! We are praying that the Holy Spirit moves among us to stir some of you to be a PART of this wonderful tradition that is vital to worship!!!! See you in September!!!! PLEASE CONSIDER JOINING ONE OF OUR CHOIRS— First Lutheran Church Choir--OK--IT IS CRUNCH TIME. WE NEED NEW MEMBERS FOR ALL PARTS IN THE FLC CHOIR!!! Open to ages youth through adult--Wednesday Rehearsals from 6:30 to 8 PM. You don't have to read music! We will work with you! Consider the Advent/Christmas Season OR the Lent/Easter Season OR CHOOSE BOTH! The Choir starts back on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at 6:30 in the choir room. First Lutheran Church Hand Bell Choir--Open to ages youth through adult--Wednesday Rehearsals from 5:30 to 6:25 PM. We are looking for music readers for bells! The Bell Choir starts back on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at 5:30 in the bell loft. We are several ringers short, so please consider being a part of this fun, vibrant ministry. Spirit Express Band and Singers--Open to ages youth through adult--Tuesday Rehearsals from 7:15 to 8:45 PM. We are always looking for singers and band players! Thanks for your prayers and support. Peace, Tim tim@flcal.org 507-373-6424, 303-887-4513

We try to be available in emergencies. Do not hesitate to call the church (373-6424), if you have not seen a pastor and would like to request a visit. If you call the church office after hours and get the recording, keying option ❸ will send your call directly to the pastor on call. No name is automatically put on a printed prayer list. We ask permission before we include a name on our printed prayer list. Please let us know if you want to be on the prayer list or be visited. ~Your FLC Pastors
Personal Visitation by the Pastors To support people at the time of illness or injury, pastors do make personal visits in hospitals, homes or Care Centers. Many hospitals, like the Mayo’s Methodist & St. Mary’s Hospitals in Rochester no longer give pastors access to lists of patients. So, if we happen to be there visiting someone, and we don’t know about someone else hospitalized, we have no way of discovering that person any more. Hospitals do NOT call pastors/churches to inform them of admissions, and have not for decades. So, please, call, if you want us to know.
PRAYER REQUESTS Our Continued Prayers are requested for healing and wholeness for:
