+ Rejoice in the Lord! + Psalm 40:1-2 I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. 2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. The psalmist begins by describing a time when he waited patiently for the Lord. Most people do not exercise these two attributes very well: waiting and patience. In our fast moving world of instant gratification, if we’re honest, we don’t like to wait for anything or anyone and patience is in short supply. Waited patiently implies a certain confidence that what, or in this case, who the psalmist is waiting for will arrive in perfect timing. The patient waiting pays off, the Lord turned to me and heard my cry. We do not usually equate our crying with patiently waiting. In fact, the patience and the waiting seem to imply that everything was fine. This is certainly not the case; the psalmist has been continually crying out to the Lord. It’s like a bawling baby in a crib with no one attending to the baby’s needs. But the good news is that the Lord does hear our cries and attends to our needs. The Lord comes and acts, and His actions are life-saving. 2He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire. Have you ever been in a slimy pit? Have you ever been stuck in the mud and mire of life? This image is of a slippery pit dug deep into the dirt of the earth with no place to get sure footing. It is a place of constant falling and stumbling. The pit, mud, and mire is in the earth and unmistakably low—like the grave. When someone is feeling low, it’s like being one foot closer to the grave. It’s an inescapable situation where the only means of survival is the hands of someone else to pull you out of the pit. The hand that helps is the hand of the Lord, our Savior. This is who we worship, our saving God who lifts us out of the pit and sets us on a firm place to stand. The Lord lifts us from the lowliness of the grave. The Lord’s action is salvific and life changing. As we are pulled out of the pit, life conditions and our surroundings change. This is significant because salvation means that God doesn’t leave us in the same condition, He found us. When the Lord, our Savior, shows salvation happens, things get better, and life drastically improves. Blessings, Pastor Sean Forde

A box will be placed in the area outside the church office to collect them. Half the supplies go to Albert Lea Schools and half will go on the truck in October. EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT OF THE MONTH Hello! For those who don’t know me, my name is Kara Heinemann and I am blessed to serve as the Church Administrator here at First. I have been here about 4.5 years and love it. My job at the church is very broad but I spend a lot of my time on finances, personnel and coordinating meetings and events. I am in the office Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 8-5 and work periodically Thursdays and Fridays from home! I love what I do at the church and thank God, and the congregation every day for giving me the opportunity to work at First. My husband Brien and I live on an acreage just outside of Glenville with our son Breckyn, who is 4 years old, and our Mini Australian Shepherd dog Lola. I grew up on a farm in Glenville where my Dad was a hog farmer, I am a farm girl and love everything about being outdoors and in the country. As a family, we love to ride on our “Ranger” (side by side vehicle), do yard work, camp when we have time, ride horses, go up north to the cabin, swim and just spend time together! As most parents would admit their children are their pride and joy, our son is the light of our world and our pride and joy also. Breckyn was born with Cerebral Palsy and we spend a lot of time traveling the country to get him the best medical care possible. In 2019 we will travel to Boston, MA 2 times, Galveston, TX and St. Louis, MO. We truly believe that God has blessed us with Breckyn and we will do anything in our control to help him to be as independent as possible. As a family we have vowed to love the life God has given us, to trust God’s plan, pray often, and to live each day to the fullest!

+ Rejoice in the Lord! +

Dear Friends in Christ, I’ve been using this heading for my Messenger articles for some years: + Rejoice in the Lord! + It’s a reminder to me of the passage from Philippians 4: 4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Whatever we face we can always rejoice in the Lord. We rejoice in the Lord when things are going well, victories are won; we can also have rejoice in the Lord when things are uncertain, or a victory eludes us. The key is that we are in the Lord. God’s gracious invitation to life in Him, Jesus’ atoning death and resurrection, and the faith-producing work of Holy Spirit all work to bring us joy even in the dark valleys. Well, we are by no means in a dark valley as a congregation, but we are facing significant change. The future can seem uncertain, but God is still on His throne. This month we bid a fond farewell to two highly-valued and beloved men on our church staff. Tim O’Shields has served faithfully as our Minister of Music and Worship here for six years. He has received a call in his life to serve the Lord in the ministry of Word and Sacrament as a pastor. He departs for his final preparation, a year of internship in Spokane, Washington. Pastor Sean Forde, Susan and their family are “going home” to Florida. He served faithfully here for three years and made a significant impact on our congregation and community. These two departures are positive and good, even though I and many of us will sorely miss their presence. We could be tempted to worry, to be “anxious about anything” with these changes. However, I hope you will all join me in heeding the above verse, and “in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Then will have “the peace of God” and our hearts and minds will be guarded in Christ Jesus, as we live... ...in the Light of His love, Pastor John F. We are using the Albert Lea Taxi Service. Those who need a ride to church can call 383-3341 to schedule a ride to the service of their choice on Sundays, or Thursday evenings. Just let the driver know to bill FLC.

Personal Visitation by the Pastors To support people at the time of illness or injury, pastors do make personal visits in hospitals, homes or Care Centers. Many hospitals, like the Mayo’s Methodist & St. Mary’s Hospitals in Rochester no longer give pastors access to lists of patients. So, if we happen to be there visiting someone, and we don’t know about someone else hospitalized, we have no way of discovering that person any more. Hospitals do NOT call pastors/churches to inform them of admissions, and have not for decades. So, please, call, if you want us to know.

We try to be available in emergencies. Do not hesitate to call the church (373-6424), if you have not seen a pastor and would like to request a visit. If you call the church office after hours and get the recording, keying option ❸will send your call directly to the pastor on call. No name is automatically put on a printed prayer list. We ask permission before we include a name on our printed prayer list. Please, let us know if you want to be on the prayer list or be visited. ~Your FLC Pastors
