Hooray, its finally here! We will gather together in person to worship. Sunday, August 16, 2020 Blended Style Service 9:30 am in the FLC Sanctuary We are finally able to come together physically in worship, however, we will not be singing or praying/speaking out loud as a congregation. Evidence exists that droplets in the air, produced when singing or speaking loudly, can also transmit the disease. [Covid 19] We require everyone who is worshiping with us to wear a mask and respect social distancing. Family/household groups can sit together and everyone else needs to maintain proper social distancing (6 feet).

Special Congregation Meeting—10:30 am, Sun., August 30, 2020 First Lutheran Church President Virginia “Ginny” Larson, hereby, calls a special meeting of the congregation to act on the recommendation of the FLC Church Council to replace one member of the Pastoral Call Team (committee). Katie Davis, previously elected as one of the three Call Team members from the Church Council, as required by the FLC By-Law Part XIX, A., resigned from the Council to concentrate on her job, service with the FLC confirmation ministry and family. The Council recommends Council member, Sue Loch, to be elected to the Call Team in her stead. Arrangements are being developed to attempt to allow people to attend virtually if they decide not to attend in person due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Overcome Disappointment with Gratitude Our granddaughter, Camilla Rose, aka “Milly”, turned 1 year old in July. [Have I mentioned lately that I’m a grandpa?] What was disappointing was that we could not be with her and her parents for her birthday. Nevertheless, we are filled with gratitude, because she is a healthy one-year-old, and we got to see a great video of her enjoying her cake! We let gratitude overcome our disappointment.

During these unusual times of isolation and social distancing, I was reflecting recently on the concept of being disappointed. This pandemic, the riots, the injustice to people of color and all of the precautions can all get a person feeling down. One of the antidotes for these disappointments, I find, is being grateful. We have seen America pull through difficult times before and come out better. I am confident that we as a nation can do it again and be better for it. We look to God for guidance. With hard and soul-searching work, guided by Holy Spirit and God’s Word, we shall make this world a better place for all together. Gratitude to God for the good will help us along the way. Look for something to be grateful whenever you face a disappointment. In any loss see what you can learn, seek God’s new direction, find a way to serve others—and be grateful for salvation, forgiveness and life in Christ. For instance, I am grateful for the Psalms. During the Reformation and all the challenges and dangers that the Reformers faced in the sixteenth century, Martin Luther recommended Psalm 31 to his wife, Kate, for strength and solace. Here are some highlights of this psalm that can help us today in the challenges we face in the 21st century... Psalm 31: 5 Into your hands I commit my spirit; deliver me, LORD, my faithful God. ... 14 But I trust in you, LORD; I say, “You are my God.” 15 My times are in your hands; ... 24 Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD. Yes, our times are in God’s hands. Don’t forget that. No matter what disappointments we face, it is good to remember that we, our challenges, and our blessings are in God’s almighty and loving hands. He’s got this. And in the midst of any disappointments we are eternally grateful for God and His Word of life. + + + Our FLC Church Council decided it is time to re-open for Sunday worship. We have been looking forward to for months. Hooray! This will be done with great care to love one another with safety in mind—a new normal for now. Make sure not to miss our Peace & Power broadcast, or tune into the radio or website, for our August 2 worship service. We are happy to welcome Bishop Regina Hassanally to greet us and bring the message. I thank everyone who put together the celebration for my 40th ordination anniversary into the pastoral ministry for the July 12 service. I was overwhelmed and humbled to be so honored. I am so thankful to my dear wife, Joan, who has been my best friend, supporter and encourager and a real partner in this endeavor. May the Lord direct our steps together. In the light of His love,

The FLC weekly burger drive thru has been a huge success. As of July 16th, we have currently served over 660 meals. Meals are consisting of either a hamburger, pork patty, or chicken sandwich, chips or potato salad, and fruit. We are fortunate to be able to fund this food ministry with monetary donations. In addition, we have received food donations from Hy Vee, Hormel, and Mrs. Gerry â€™ s. We have also received a $2000 grant through the ELCA. The food ministry team is planning on continuing the drive thru until the end of August at which time they will reevaluate for the fall. A huge thank you to Joe LaFrance, Janice Hammer, Cindy Gandrud, Jill Johnson, and the Social Ministry Commission for helping to organize this wonderful ministry, and to all of the amazing volunteers who are helping serve. For the 24rd year I will be riding in the Habitat 500, but this year it is a Virtual Ride. We still have to pay the registration fee and raise funds, but the biking is on our own. Back in 1997 when I decided to experience the challenge of a long bike ride to raise money for Habitat for Humanity, I never dreamed that I would keep on riding for all these years. Yet, two bikes and over $196,000 later, here I am. I believe that Habitat for Humanity provides a wonderful opportunity for us to live our faith as we give people the opportunity to become the owners of simple, decent, affordable homes. The funds I raise come back to our local Freeborn-Mower affiliate, which, in turn, sends a tithe of all donations to the International organization. In the past, the First Lutheran family has generously supported my efforts both financially and spiritually. There usually has been a between services coffee for me during June, but that could not happen this year. Throughout the rest of the summer you can drop off your donations in the church office or mail them to me at 1129 Lakeview Blvd. Checks can be made to either First Lutheran Church or Habitat for Humanity. Please remember that no contribution is too small. If you would like to give on-line, you can go to the Habitat 500 website, click on Donate to a Rider, and type in my name. There is, however, a fee for using this service. Please remember that no donation is too small. I treasure them all. If your finances do not permit you to make a monetary contribution, please keep me and my fellow riders in your prayers. NOTES FROM GRATEFUL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

The Welcome Ministry Team was organized and established in 2012 to provide a more welcoming atmosphere in the Gathering Space of the church. The duties and tasks of the team have evolved over the years, but the main idea is to make a point of welcoming people to the church, both members and visitors. Special attention is given to visitors when we have the pleasure of sharing our church with them. Small bags are provided by the team to the visitors. The adults receive a bag containing a copy of the Most recent Messenger, a copy of the devotional Christ In Our Home, a pen, a First Lutheran Church brochure, and a prayer block. The child bag includes a flashlight, a small reading book and a prayer block. Visitors are encouraged to fill out a card with their name, address and phone number. If they are interested in membership or want a Pastor to call, that information is recorded. Those cards are passed on to Life and Growth Commission and they are contacted, if requested, and arrangements made as required. The Welcome Team makes a point of visiting with people and answering questions. If we see someone we do not recognize, we try to greet them and introduce ourselves and engage in conversation. Serving on this team is a blessing, as you have an opportunity to interact with large numbers of people and get to know our members better. The Welcome Center opens at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday morning and closes about noon after the 10:30 service attendees have left the church. We always welcome new members to serve with us. We meet every other month on Sunday morning at 9:15 to sign up for the next 6 weeks of Sunday assignments. We have one or two people in the center each Sunday, as staffing allows. At present, we have 9 members: Nyaroup Jal, Cindy Gandrud, Bonnie Trampel, Pam Stern, Carol Olson, Joyce and Norm Fredin, Bonnie Schneider, and Jo Hanson, Chair. If you would like to join us, 6 we would welcome you with open arms!

CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION QUILT While discussing the history of the church and identifying gifts and memorabilia of the First Lutheran Church congregation, a suggestion was made to make a quilt to commemorate our 100th Anniversary on September 9, 2019. Ultimately, it was decided to make two quilts and invite families and the Sunday school and confirmation classes to participate. A small group of volunteers agreed to take the various quilt squares and assemble the quilts. In the process of planning the quilts, Kim Zenk was contacted for ideas and guidance. She very graciously offered to provide all the of the material to make the quilt squares. Families, children, and young adults were invited to make a square that represented their faith walk, their family or scripture picture they wanted to share. Each quilt would contain approximately 80 squares. In addition, various groups, staff members, and events were pictured on the squares. Marge La France, Sue Jensen, Audrey Christensen, Pam Stern and Jo Hanson assembled the squares, sewed the quilts, and prepared them for presentation at the Centennial Celebration and hanging. PVC pipe was obtained to hang the quilts, and both were covered with plastic to protect them. Al Blenka, Pam Stern and Jo Hanson applied the plastic, and Al was kind enough to hang the quilts where they can be seen and enjoyed by everyone in the area outside the Multi-purpose Room and Bethany Hall. Thank you everyone for participating in this project. Your handiwork and love will be a blessing to First Lutheran Church for many years to come.

Wednesday mornings 9:30 in Bethany Hall Starts August 19, 2020 To teach a lesson, Jesus often told a parableâ€”an earthly story with a heavenly meaning. The Andy Griffith Showâ€? continues to have a huge worldwide following. This study features lessons based on four classic episodes and applies Biblical principles and scriptural references. Join Andy, Opie, Barney, and Aunt Bee for the parables of Mayberry. 1. Andy's English Valet - Lesson: The Secret Service - Ephesians 6:7 - Andy Taylor tries to be a gentleman to a gentleman's gentleman allowing Malcolm the valet to work off a debt he can't repay. However, It's Andy who serves a higher purpose when he makes Malcolm feel at home by accepting help he doesn't want. Finally this master sees that the only thing better than being served is being of service. 2. Class reunion - Lesson: A Peace of the Past - Psalm 85:8 - Andy and Barney make peace with the passed girlfriends, that is when they look up the old gang to check on their old flames. But it's an awkward date, when Barney finds that true love can be truer for others and Andy learns that some people just can't come home again. As the past gives way to the present, our boys look for a peace filled future. 3. Dogs, Dogs, Dogs - Lesson: Begging for Mercy - Matthew 5:7 - A pack of lost pups hunts for refuge with Andy and nearly turns the courthouse into a doghouse. Then Barney chases the dogs out - only to fetch them right back when his conscience attacks. As the pack turns the jail into the pound, Opie reminds them that neither man nor dog should have to beg for mercy. 4. The Darlings are Coming - Lesson: Crime and Commitment Proverbs 16:3 - When a hillbilly family comes to pick a friend up, Andy has to lay the law down. As Mr. Darling stands by a betrothal promise, his daughter Charlene falls hard for the Sheriff, and Andy works overtime to stay true to his duties as Peace Officer. When each one tries to win, it's an amazing display of uncommon commitment. 10
