We’ve also continued to grow our product lines with an expanding family of innovative brands founded by passionate hunters who are driven to make the best gear in the world. The idea for the FOB (Forward Operating Bino Harness) has been kicking around in my mind and in notebooks for years. When we were finally able to dig into this project just over two years ago, our team at FHF Gear started by going through every review we could find on our own products as well as every competitor product. We went through every blog and video and we wrote down the ‘The Goods,’ ‘The Bads,’ what people loved, and what they hated. Then we tried to solve all the problems and wrap those solutions into one product. In the end, we came up with what I think is the most technically advanced and innovative system on the market.

The design and testing phases for the FOB took about 2 years, with nearly 30 prototypes tested in over 10 states and 3 countries. We have a hands-on approach when it comes to design, which means every prototype is handmade by me or the team, before we put it through its paces in the field. It’s a process of building, testing it, taking it back, building it, testing it again, and continuing to modify it until we’re happy with it. I don’t want to put something out there that I wouldn’t use in the field.

One of the main goals of the FOB was to make it as modular as possible. Not everybody hunts the same. Not everybody carries the same equipment, and not everybody wants it in the same place. For me it’s being able to set up your kit in a way that you want to use it. Specter uses First Lite’s nature-based algorithm to create large-shape disruption for whitetail hunters. This distorts and hides the human body, which inherently stands out in the natural environment.

The visual disruption is created by incorporating large regions of both light and dark colors (macro break up) found in the tree canopy. These regions of dark and light work against the human figure at long engagement distances and angles specific to the whitetail hunter.

Specter uses a finely tuned color palette to blend the body into its surroundings. The pattern utilizes selective colors derived from whitetail regions: Trees, leaves, limbs, and sky tones were all measured to create Specter’s seven median colors. Doing so also prevents ‘blobbing’ through controlled contrast, making Specter highly effective across varying distances, elevations, and focus points.

Using our nature-based algorithm that mimics naturally occurring patterns in combination with textures, shapes, and elements specific to tree stand hunting, we created a scattering of small-tomedium-sized elements (micro break up). This effectively blends the hunter into their surroundings at close engagement distances and angles specific to the whitetail hunter.

By carefully utilizing science-based disruptive shapes, Specter has an unmatched built-in sense of depth. The pattern’s elements create focal confusion and disruption that ensure deer are not able to pinpoint the human figure. The contrast and disruptive coloration of Specter also confuse a deer’s peripheral vision, keeping hunters from being exposed.

Salt and pepper

8 oz. sliced bacon

¼ cup mustard, Dijon or coarse-grain mustard

2 onions, sliced

½ cup pickled jalapeños

3 tbsp. olive oil or lard

3 carrots, diced

3 tbsp. flour, optional

3 qts. venison or beef stock

PREPARATION

1. Lay the belly on a cutting board with the grain running horizontally. Season well with salt and pepper then rub the entire belly with the mustard. Lay the bacon across the belly horizontally, then scatter half of the onion and pickled peppers over the belly, leaving a 2” border.

2. Roll the belly up tightly from the bottom to top. Tie the belly securely with butcher’s twine.

3. Preheat the oven to 325°F.

4. In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil or lard over high heat and brown the belly well on all sides.

5. Add the remaining onion and carrots to the pot and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

6. Add the optional flour and cook, stirring constantly, for about two minutes.

7. Add the stock and bring to a simmer. Put the lid on the pot and place in the oven until tender, about 5-7 hours, turning the belly at least once and adding water or stock if the level falls below a point halfway up the belly. Once tender, move the belly to a board to rest for about 20 minutes and reduce the sauce until slightly thickened. Cut the strings from the belly and slice thickly against the grain, then spoon the sauce over.
