Jodhpur: Chief Minis- ter Ashok Gehlot on Sunday inaugurated the third phase of the Rajiv Gandhi Lift Canal that will play an important role in providing water till 2054. Rs 1,799 crore will be spent on the third phase of Rajiv Gandhi Lift Canal and the work of this project is to be completed in May 2025.

Minister Mahesh Joshi, Former MP Badri Ram Jakhar, AICC member Vaibhav Gehlot, and other public representatives were also pre- sent. Gehlot also laid the foundation stone and inaugurated many important schemes.

A total of 1,030 MLD will be produced jointly by the Rajiv Gandhi Lift Canal and the proposed pipeline. Drinking water can be supplied to estimated 80 lakh population of 2167 villages by the year 2054 including Jodhpur city, Phalodi, Pipar, Bilada, Bhopalgarh and Samdari towns and 1830 villages of Jodhpur district, 211 villages of Barmer and 126 villages of Pali.

“In 1983, the leaders of western Rajasthan were witnesses when Rajiv Gandhi gifted the work of canal. I have seen the problem of water closely. I requested Rajiv Gandhi and got the gift of Indira Gandhi Yojana. No stone was left unturned to get rid of the water problem,” Gehlot said.

Speaking in the event, Osian MLA Divya Maderna expressed gratitude to CM Gehlot and said that CM Gehlot understood the problem of water after being an MP for 25 years.“CM has been serious about the arrangement of drinking water supply. He fulfilled my father’s dream in Osian region. My father’s dream was fulfilled in the first budget itself,” she said.
