Adam Devito The Pageant of the Masters is the Festival of Arts’ crowning jewel and Photography arguably one of the most unique productions in the entire world.

On each evening of the Festival of Arts summer schedule, ticket holders are amazed and enchanted by ninety minutes of tableaux vivants (living pictures), incredibly faithful recreations of classical and contemporary works of art, with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original pieces.

An outdoor amphitheater, professional orchestra, original score, live narration, intricate sets, sophisticated lighting, expert staff and hundreds of John Repka dedicated volunteers have won recognition for the Pageant of the Masters Oil as the best presentation of its kind.

The Irvine Museum Collection at the University of California, Irvine presents “Along El Camino Real,” an exhibit that explores the history of the California missions. These outposts were connected by El Camino Real (the Royal Road or the King’s Highway), which today approximates Highway 101.

The first mission in what is now California was founded by Spain in San Diego in 1769. Over the next 54 years, 20 more were established, stretching as far north as Sonoma. In 1821, Mexico declared its independence from Spain and claimed California as a province. The missions were greatly restricted during this period, and their vast land holdings were taken away. By 1850, when California became the 31st state of the U.S.A., most missions had been abandoned and were in ruins. It wasn’t until the 1890s, when artists began to portray them as relics of California’s romantic past, that a serious effort was made to preserve and restore the structures.

The earliest views of the California missions in our exhibition are selections from a set of etchings by Henry Chapman Ford (18281894) published in 1883. The oldest paintings on display are the “Mission San Juan Capistrano” and “Chinatown, Los Angeles” both painted by Alexander Harmer (18561925) in 1886. What is now one of the most beautiful gardens in California is shown as a dry, dusty yard, with just a few geraniums against the pillars of the arcade.

Also on display are works by such noted California artists as Alson S. Clark (1876-1949), Alice Coutts (1879-1973), Edwin Deakin (18381923), William Lees Judson (1842-1928), Elmer Wachtel (1864-1929) and William Wendt (1865-1946). These paintings show many of California’s 21 missions. The most popular with artists, however, was our own Mission San Juan Capistrano, whose beauty and elegance earned it the nickname “Jewel of the Missions.

No Justice, No Peace: LA 1992 March 8 - August 27, 2017

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the LA Uprising, CAAM presents No Justice, No Peace: LA 1992, an exhibition that examines one of the most notorious episodes of urban unrest in American history. On March 3, 1991, Rodney King led the California Highway Patrol on a high-speed chase that concluded with a struggle, during which some of the officers beat King with their batons. The brutality in the videotaped arrest sent shockwaves around the world and enraged many in the already-frustrated Los Angeles African American community. On April 29, 1992, when a predominantly white jury acquitted the four officers accused in King's beating, rage turned to violence.

With powerful photographs and videos, historic documents, posters, flyers, and other ephemera, No Justice, No Peace: LA 1992 considers decades of complex socio-political history that contribute to underlying tensions among Los Angeles' marginalized groups and communities, and examines race relations, socioeconomics, and equality in America today.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present a series of film screenings, conversations with filmmakers, and online content exploring the shared influences of Latino and Latin American filmmakers and the work they created or presented in Los Angeles during the past halfcentury. From Latin America to Hollywood: Latino Film Culture in Los Angeles is centered on a period that began with the social, cultural, and political environment of the 1960s that sparked the Chicano and New Latin American cinema movements and extends to the present day. The Academy’s programming is grounded in its extensive series of oral histories with notable Latino and Latin American filmmakers. Their films will be presented together with public conversations about filmmaking and, in some cases, will premiere new Academy Film Archive restorations. The Academy’s programs will offer a rare opportunity for audiences to experience first-hand the perspectives of filmmakers including Gregory Nava, Lucrecia Martel, Edward James Olmos, and Alfonso Cuaró

The works in this exhibition are inspired by Ana Tzarev's travels through Asia, Africa, the Pacific and numerous other regions.

Tzarev's vivid paintings celebrate cultural diversity with exceptional insight developed from years of research and her remarkable knowledge of global history, spirituality and the arts. Her works portray both historic and present day rituals, as well as the traditions and rhythm of daily life in a wide range of scenes from flower markets and rice harvests in Southeast Asia to traditional dances of West African tribes; from Japanese kabuki and tea ceremonies to life along China's rivers.

What happens to ordinary entities of domestic life when they are driven into territories where their standard uses or functions are suspended and upended and new meanings are forged? Interstitial seeks to answer this question through the examination of new and recently-created free-standing sculptures by contemporary Los Angeles-based object makers whose work exists in the interstices, the spaces between the historical genres of the decorative arts, still life, and abstraction. In the exhibition, artists Jeff Colson, Renee Lotenero, Kristen Morgin, Joel Otterson, Rebecca Ripple, Aili Schmeltz, and Shirley Tse take quotidian and overlooked objects outside of their usual settings and modify, disassemble, and/or reassemble them, catapulting the objects into other dimensions, ones that are, at times, strange, comical, and unnerving. These works reside in the interstitial space: in between the memory of their previous function or usage and their abrupt and unexpected presence in the museum.
