from the director

At first glance, Matilda may seem like a silly children’s show. The colors are vibrant, the music is upbeat, magic abounds, and hilarity ensues. It is only when we look a little closer, we see the depth, darkness, and wisdom that is crafted into the story.

In the song “When I Grow Up”, we hear the kids dreaming of what it will be like to be older, bigger, and taller When they are older, they will be “brave enough,” “smart enough,” and “strong enough”.

Miss Honey reminds us that as adults, we often still wonder what it will be like when we are brave enough, smart enough, and strong enough. Because – spoilers, kids – we adults don’t have it all together. We are still growing, learning and changing. We are a beautiful mess.

Matilda reminds us that no matter our age, we are capable of hard things NOW. We don’t have to wait to feel like we are enough. Stand up for what you believe in. Use the gifts and power given to you by our Heavenly Father.

Adults, listen to the voices of the young. Keep your eyes open for signs of abuse and neglect. Don’t forget your dreams, your imagination, and your sense of wonder. Children, (and adults), you can do BIG things. Don’t let the bullies pick on you or those around you. Be brave. Speak up. You can change the world.

Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. - Proverbs 3:3

Thank you for your support of this cast, the show, and First Act in general! We could not do what we do without you! Now sit back, relax, and enjoy the wonderful world of Matilda!

To the King!
