The folded flag is symbolic of the tri-cornered hat worn by the Patriots of the American Revolution. When folded, no red or white stripe is to be evident, leaving only the blue field with stars.* It is generally presented to the appropriate family member of a fallen service member or civilian services such as law enforcement and fire department, often accompanied by the words, “Please accept this flag as a symbol of our appreciation for your loved one’s honorable and faithful service.”** According to the United States Flag Code, the 13 folds are symbolic passing of the 13 truths. I’m excited about this issue of FireWatch Magazine because, like most of you, I look forward to a fresh start in 2024. The articles in this edition will hopefully get us thinking and acting on ways to be healthier and happier this year.

There’s no shortage of advice online about being healthy. There is so much advice; deciding what to try is hard. So, we don’t try anything. Instead, we settle into our bad habits because it is easier and takes less brain power and energy.

So, where should we start?

In this issue of FireWatch Magazine, we’ve reached out to people with experience in each field and asked them to share a little advice on one of our Dirty Dozen ways to be healthy and happy.

There are many ways to be happy; we could never include them all. But the twelve we have chosen could give us a good start.

I plan to try a few.

Please meet up at FireWatch LIVE Brews and News, our new monthly socials starting this month (see inside the issue for location and time). Let’s get together and form a bike club, run club, yoga group, or something. If we team up, we can stretch our resolutions past February.

13 FOLDS, FROM PG 2 5. The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, “Our country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right, but it is still our country, right or wrong.”

6. The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

7. The seventh fold is a tribute to our armed forces, for it is through the armed forces that we protect our country and our flag against all enemies.

8. The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered the valley of the shadow of death so that we might see the light of day.

9. The ninth fold is an honor to womanhood and motherhood, for it has been through their faith, love, loyalty, and devotion that the character of men and women who have made this country great have been molded.

10. The tenth fold is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since he or she was first-born.

11. The eleventh fold, in the eyes of Hebrew citizens, represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies, in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

12. The twelfth fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

13. The last fold, when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost, reminding us of our national motto, “In God We Trust.”

For anyone who may take issue with the religious aspects of these truths, remember those who have served and died did so, in part, to ensure and protect your religious freedoms, freedom of speech, and all other freedoms bestowed on us as American Citizens.

The Devil in Your Living Room

Do you have one? That invisible presence who beckons you to the couch and convinces you that you don’t need to move. You don’t need to get dressed. “Grab some snacks and sit down, my pretty.” I have one. He smiles and tells me it’s okay not to care, to be lazy, and depressed. He talks me into staying home when I’ve been invited out; he sometimes even makes me lie. But he is not alone. His little demon companions live in my kitchen and constantly entice me with sugar, spice, and everything naughty. They are relentless. They’ve allied with fast food delivery and streaming services. I appreciate Netflix checking on me after hours of mindlessly watching television; it asks, “Are you still watching?” I don’t even have to answer; my devil answers for me. “Yes, my pretty.”

Life Without My Devil

I imagine what life would be like without my devil. I picture myself as fit and energetic, airing up the tires on my bicycle and mounting the bike on my car. The vision includes a short battle with spiders and webs who have decided to live on my bicycle (oh, wait, that is the devil again trying to tell me it’s not worth it.) I see myself laughing with friends, drinking lots of water (they always tell you to drink more water, blah blah blah – shut up, demons!), feeling good in my clothes, breathing normally, etc.

This one thought always comes to me: “Let’s Start on Monday!” It’s a jovial sound from my devil and his demons. They try to negotiate with me.

They tell me, “Let’s start on Monday. But, before Monday, you should eat all the junk food because you won’t have anymore once you start.” They laugh and laugh because they know this little trick will tack on another 5 pounds and steal my energy for the Monday start that never comes.

Battle Plan

Okay, it is time to fight this demon. I have to find a way to get away from him and his lovely comfortable couch, warm blanky, large bowl of yummy buttered popcorn, and…..damn! He’s in my head again.

Breathe. Just breathe.

STEP ONE The first thing I will do is battle the smaller demons in the kitchen. They are attached to the junk food in there.

I will get rid of the junk food and be mindful of what I eat. I remember someone once told me to treat food like fuel, “Don’t take in more than you burn,” they said.

It seems so simple. But the devil will lose some of his power if I can eliminate the demons. I may concentrate on this for a while because it won’t be easy. The devil will try extra hard to get his minions back. He will likely manipulate the T.V. with Snicker commercials.

STEP TWO Once I’ve gotten ahold of my eating habits, I’ll incorporate an activity. I’ll pick one day a week that I block out for myself to go for a walk, a bike ride, or even to the gym. Whatever day I pick, I’m sure my devil will think of something clever, like thunderstorms or back pain. I might need some help with this one. Maybe I can find a friend who will meet me once a week and help me fight my Devil.

STEP THREE By step three, my new healthy diet and the joyful weekly meetups with friends will have diminished the devil somewhat. I cannot lose sight of his power. He is one “I deserve chocolate cake and a marathon of Lord of the Rings movies” away. It is true what they say: when you stop eating sugar and other junk, you begin to crave it no longer. That’s cool. I have defeated the pantry demons once and for all!

Oh, no. It’s Halloween, then Thanksgiving, then Christmas. Why are all holidays centered around food?

Back to step three. I’ll add another activity to my schedule (“You don’t have time, my pretty.” – says you know who). Maybe I can add a second and third day to the workout schedule. I’ve heard that 30 minutes daily, three times a week, is good. I can do that!

buy a couple of new outfits. It’s time to get a haircut, a facial, and a massage! By step four, it will become clear that the devil in my living room was a liar. He was a manipulator. Truth is, there is so much out here in the world to enjoy! I can be active with friends or alone if I feel like it.

STEP FOUR

I have control.

Step Four. I’ve had my eye on step four for a long time. This is the reward step. This is where I pack up those giant jeans and super-size t-shirts. I may even

NATURE

Being in nature helps to disconnect from the trappings of the world. There are many ways to enjoy the outdoors. Finding local parks near you is a good first step.

Most local parks have mapped walking and biking trails. In Pasco County, Florida, you can visit the Pasco County website for park locations and information about each park. Most counties have similar sites; the Pasco County website has classified their parks into ten categories to make finding the adventure you seek easy.

Athletic Parks

These parks include sports fields such as baseball, softball, football, and soccer.

Most athletic parks include playgrounds, and some even have walking trails.

Beach Parks

Beach Parks include water features such as swim areas, kayaking access, boat ramps, and fishing areas.

Community Centers

Community Centers are in a more urban environment and usually include a building where classes are held. These are locations where events and festivals are commonly held, and they typically include ball fields, playgrounds, and picnic areas.

Fresh Water Lakes

These parks have canoe or kayak activities, fishing areas, and even boat ramps.

Historical Parks

Pasco County is home to one Historical Park, the Oelsner Indian Mound. “This Indian mound is all that remains of a late Weeden Island period community, probably settled about AD 1000 and inhabited for several hundred years…”

Neighborhood Parks

These parks are smaller but offer a plethora of activities. Depending on the size, they are designed to be part of a neighborhood and feature playgrounds, ball fields, basketball courts, and more.

Wilderness Parks

Wilderness Parks are the largest of the parks and include camping and cabin rentals. Some include RV camping and equestrian trails.

Gulf Coast Parks

These parks are ideal for hiking, with elevated trails featuring the sparkling Gulf as a backdrop. You can find areas to fish, canoe, picnic, and more.

Preserves and Conservation Areas

Preserves and Conservation areas are primarily for walking and hiking. With few distractions, these areas ensure a real connection to nature.

Recreational Complexes

These parks provide many opportunities to enjoy sports, fitness trails, playgrounds, and picnic areas. Many offer swimming pools, fishing areas, and gymnasiums.

Americans have never been more disconnected from the food they eat than they are today. Mass-produced food isn’t only the highly processed sugar-infused foods on grocery shelves. Mass production techniques and artificial preservation are also in the meat section of every grocery store in the United States. Most beef, pork, chicken, and seafood found at local grocery stores are mass-produced to supply the largest population possible at the lowest possible cost.

While the mass production of our meat supply became more and more systemized and centralized, America’s health began to decline rapidly and steadily. Diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and cancer are the top killers in our society. The greatest tragedy of our modern diet is the exponential rise of obesity and diabetes among children.

These conditions are primarily lifestyle-driven and can be avoided if we understand that our food and its treatment before it reaches our tables is critical in taking personal responsibility for our health and vibrant longevity.

It is unnatural for cows to be force-fed corn and grain.

It is unnatural for cows to be injected with hormones and steroids that rapidly increase their size. It is unnatural for humans to consume this meat. Feedlot meat found at any supermarket passes harmful steroids and chemicals to consumers. The negative health impact of a cow’s bad diet does not end when it is processed. Those substances are STILL IN THE MEAT! These items get into the human system, resulting in the declining health of the consumer.

People who avoid eating meat may do so because they physically feel bad afterward. These people could be experiencing an immediate toxic reaction to the chemicals and contaminants contained in the processed meat.

However, there is good news for meat lovers. Pastureraised, grass-fed cattle live in their natural environment.

They eat the food they were designed to eat and grow to their natural size. No hormones or steroids are required during their lifecycle. This produces “clean” meat for consumers. People who have had prior difficulty eating meat purchased from stores or restaurants find that they can enjoy meat once again when it is sourced from local, responsible farmers.

The farm-to-table food sourcing does two things for the local community. First, it shortens the supply chain because

the producer and consumer are in the same neighborhood.

This allows both parties to work together to produce healthy, naturally-raised food. Second, it provides the consumer with the cleanest source of food available. Eating is something we must do frequently to survive. Given this, common sense dictates that the food is of the best quality, free of unnecessary contaminates. Food isn’t just something we eat to satisfy our hunger; FOOD IS MEDICINE. Once this concept is embraced, eating clean, locally sourced products is the only alternative. Respect for ourselves, local producers, and the animals that feed us will make all parties healthier and happier throughout their lives.

FOR BETTER HEALTH

FARM-TO-TABLE EATING Food Choice

Defining healthy eating habits can be difficult without structure. Some people don’t eat all day but then binge at night.

The lack of food throughout the day causes the body to crave fats and proteins, but instead, we feed it carbohydrates and low-fat or no-fat options and diet sodas, which never seem to satisfy the cravings.

In the August 2023 edition of FireWatch Magazine, Kim Kasem, owner of Pride

The idea behind fasting is to give your body time to tap into its fat stores for energy by limiting the availability of glucose and carbohydrates for fuel. The most popular fasting schedules consist of 12-hour or 16-hour fasting, leaving an eating window of 12 or 8 hours, depending. Sleep time counts towards fasting hours!

Example of 16-Hour Fast EAT from Noon until 8:00 PM; Lunch, Healthy Snack, Dinner, Healthy Snack FAST from 8:00 PM until Noon the next day: Sleep, drink water, teas, coffee, and apple cider vinegar. *No Sweeteners!

There are claims that staying active while following an intermittent fasting schedule can result in weight loss of 6 to 8 pounds per month.

When #TEAMFIREWATCH asked Kim Kasem, owner of Pride Strength Training in Tampa, what she would recommend most for weight loss, she answered, “I am a big advocate of intermittent fasting because it is the only thing proven to work with cancer patients.”

According to Cancercenter.com, “Fasting may reduce glucose levels in the blood, making it harder for cancers to grow.”

Strength Training, shared her thoughts on food choice: “On my journey, I realized that once I started to eat more and exercise less, I began to see positive changes in my body. I began feeling better mentally.

Before, I was doing what everybody thought I should: eating small meals throughout the day: fat-free cottage cheese, tuna fish, eggs, chicken, and vegetables. I was eating a balanced diet, but I wasn’t eating enough.

You see, I used to do fat-free everything.

I would eat an entire 32-ounce container of fat-free cottage cheese and still be starving. Then, I started to eat the wholeor low-fat version. I found that I could eat a small portion of whole-fat cottage cheese and be full, versus an entire container of fat-free and still be hungry. It turns out that when you eat fat-free foods or drink diet soda, the preservatives in those products make you hungrier.”

HOW THE MILITARY SHAPED M E

As a kid growing up on the streets of Baltimore City, Maryland, I found more opportunities for bad deeds than good. But I had my grandfather’s and father’s military service to look up to; they had both served in the Army during World War II. My father passed away in 1970, and my mother did her best to raise five kids, but there was no shortage of struggles for her and for me. I needed to help support my mother and siblings, so I quit school in the 10th grade. I always wanted something bigger and more exciting in my life. I wanted off the streets and out of my dead-end town; that is where the Army comes into the picture.

It was the Fall of 1978 when I joined the Army Reserves. For the next six years of my life, I served at Fort Meade, Maryland, and while there, I finally graduated from high school.

When my service in the Reserves ended, I attended community college and earned my Associate’s Degree. After graduation, I couldn’t find a job that challenged me, so I turned back to the Army and enlisted, this time in the regular Army; it was 1986.

With any start of service, there is always an ending, but I kept returning.

Over the course of my military career, I served in the Army Reserves, the regular Army, and the Maryland National Guard. My Army life has taken me all over the world and has been the catalyst for knowledge and experience at a level I could never have imagined. I admit I would not be where I am today had I not decided to return to school. Returning to school didn’t just earn a diploma; it allowed me to continue a lifelong quest for knowledge, and I have the Army to thank for that. I was blessed to be mentored, selected, and recognized by my fellow leaders and soldiers.

It was December 31, 2015, when I proudly retired after 37 years and 8 months in service. It was a day filled with the support of my brothers and sisters in arms. I spent part of that special day

reflecting on my life of military service. I had entered service as an enlisted soldier who had dropped out of high school and retired as a Senior Warrant Officer with a master’s degree. As I contemplated retirement, I realized I was entering a different journey of service. I would discover how to transition from a large family of fellow military soldiers to living with a much smaller, more special family.

The most important thing in my life today is to be able to spend the rest of my days with my lovely wife and our children.

I often wonder what life would have been like had I not chosen to join the Army. I would not have been able to share leadership skills with, fight alongside, or mentor some of the finest soldiers in the world.

DAMN SNAKES!

The King of Snakes I hear rustling in the brush. I look over, and my eyes are locked with a giant serpent. I reach for my weapon but drop it into the muddy water. The snake’s huge head stops moving, but his forked tongue darts in and out. I slide slowly backward without taking my eyes off the creature’s bigger-than-life fangs.

I’m scared shitless.

The King Cobra coils.

I slowly lower myself to kneeling, and the serpent rises to an attack position as I do. He must be four feet tall!

I hear my buddy say, “Don’t Move.”

The thirteen-foot-long king of snakes rears its head and spreads its neck to form a menacing hood. It begins to sway back and forth. Its fangs are at least half an inch long.

I wet my pants. I’m going to die right here, right now.

“WHACK!” The head of the King Cobra explodes.

I turn to my friend, “Thanks, man!”

Sneaky Bastard We were on a mission to check out some double agents and were walking through very heavy jungle.

We had to walk straight through the brush, not on a trail or anything. So, we are walking along, and I grab onto a branch to lift it over my head and walk underneath when a snake strikes me on the face just under my left eye. I didn’t realize what had happened; the team filled me in later.

After the strike, I took two or three steps and felt dizzy and lightheaded. I went down to one knee and tried to get back up but fell to the ground. I vaguely remember dreaming of my wife, Sharon. But, in the dream, she was kissing me very sloppily. I remember thinking, Ewe, gross, stop kissing me, that’s disgusting. I was half-conscious. What was really happening was that one of the Montagnards was giving me mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

Through hazy vision and a fog of bad breath, I do remember his face. He was saying, “I not kissing, I not kissing. Breathe in you! Breathe in you!”

They got me back up, but I was unstable and useless to my team. So, the Assistant Team Leader called in a Medevac. Luckily, we were in an area they could enter without getting shot down.

The Montangnards were amazing. They were so fast that the Montangnard, walking behind me and seeing me jerk away from the snake strike, could grab the snake and cut off its head. He then stuck the snake head in my front pocket for the medics to find.

The next day, at the hospital, the doctor shared that I was a fortunate man. The snake that had bitten me was an adult. Had it been a young snake, I likely would have died.

The National Institutes of Health recommends between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per day for adults. Studies show that less sleep could result in a higher risk of hypertension, diabetes, obesity, depression, heart attack, stroke, and a host of other disorders.

Veterans suffer from sleep issues much more than the general public. In a study of more than 5,500 post-9/11 veterans, 57.2 percent had insomnia. The study also found that more than 93 percent of veterans with PTSD also had insomnia, 77.7 percent of veterans with traumatic brain injury, and 69.6 percent of veterans with chronic pain also had insomnia.

Where to get help The Mid Atlantic Post Deployment Mental Health Center, MIRECC, along with VA Health Care, has developed a comprehensive sleep guide using the CBT-i method to help veterans who have insomnia. This 88-page workbook discusses learning about your sleep, using a sleep diary, steps to improving your sleep, how to maintain your progress, and a series of worksheets and charts.

for PTSD and Trauma

Yoga is a lifelong practice of healing the Mind, Body and Soul. The breath is the most important and powerful part of the practice and has been shown scientifically to calm the nervous system. Mantras, as simple as the one-word, three-syllable sound of OM, have been proven to positively affect the brain and ease the severity of PTSD and trauma. The Mantra OM can be practiced alone, but when practiced collectively and shared in a group, the sound and the vibration of OM is even more beneficial. The physical practice of Yoga can be postures in a sequence. It can also be a where you learn to move with the breath, also known as moving meditation. The physical practice of Yoga can be restorative if practiced lying down in different postures while guided through a meditation.

Between these two types of practices are many other variations and intensities.

There is a practice for everyone in every body. We are all unique, and we all have special needs. To find that place of calm, your Yoga practice can be still or moving or a combination of both and will evolve with time and practice. I’M A RUNNER IF I HAVE YET TO MENTION IT IN THE LAST TEN MINUTES.

If you are a runner or know a runner, then you know how true that statement can be. Now, does running define me?

No. Being a father, son, friend, and career Navy Vet with 34 years (and counting) does. Running is just my main outlet for stress and keeping myself grounded.

I started in the Navy in January 1989, and over the last 34 years, I have always run because I had to. Bootcamp was running while being yelled at; later, at Little Creek, it was running on the beach and the surf, and of course, there was the twice-a-year mile-and-a-half run that I could rest for six months in between.

When I joined the SOF community, I realized I needed to run better. The team became stronger, so I had to as well. I couldn’t be the slowest, so I spent time putting in the miles and signing up for races to keep me motivated. By this time, I had transitioned to the Navy Reserve, and my “day job” was in law enforcement, so running was also a great way to stay in shape.

By 2015, I had retired from law enforcement and had the opportunity to mobilize to Afghanistan with Special Operations Joint Task Force-Afghanistan (SOJTF-A). I was mobilized for 14 months and then returned to the unit as a contractor for a combined 3 years in country. During this time, I sustained some injuries that kept me from running.

Once I returned, I was “broken” physically and mentally.

My knees were shot, my marriage was over, and my Run with Greg weight was hovering around at the VAN 235 pounds. I decided I would either be heavy with bad knees 5K Trail Run or run with bad knees, so I did February 10, 2024! what every military guy does…. sign up for a half marathon in Key West without training.

Thirteen miles was enough to reflect on what I needed to do to get back in shape, not just physically. That race was two years ago, and now I am 180 pounds, running several times a week, and I have signed

up for my first 50- and 100-mile races, which will happen early next year. I run a few road races yearly but keep those focused on VAN (Veterans Adventure Network) runs, law enforcement, and military-specific races. I have really found my place in the world of trail running. The community is closer and like that of the military. We all speak the same lingo and

share a camaraderie like in the military. Running the trails around Florida gives me time to reflect on myself, and I really enjoy being outside. I love pushing myself to the limit of what my body can do and then letting the mental side take over, knowing I can keep going. Running has helped me get to where I wanted to be, and I give thanks for that.

These days, it is easier than ever to get stuck in a routine and rarely make it outside the home and office. Hiking and the great outdoors offer profound benefits, especially for our military and veteran communities.

Hiking and walking are not just exercises to improve physical fitness; they are transformative journeys for the mind and soul. For veterans who may carry invisible scars, these activities offer an invaluable path to healing. With its revitalizing qualities, the fresh, open air can have a remarkable impact on mental health, providing relief and hope that is often difficult to find post-service.

Another benefit of these outdoor activities, such as Irreverent Warriors’ “Silkies Hikes,” is the camaraderie they foster. Veterans often share a unique bond forged by their experiences, and this shared understanding can be a lifeline.

The healing power of connecting with peers who have walked similar paths cannot be ignored. These connections create a support network that banishes isolation and encourages resilience.

Perhaps the most significant impact of IW events is the camaraderie they foster. Irreverent Warriors is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a mission to bring veterans together using humor and camaraderie to improve mental health and prevent veteran suicide. In the company of fellow veterans who share similar experiences and challenges, individuals

can find their irreverence again, laugh in the midst of pain, and remember they are not alone. The bonds formed on these trails are lifelong connections that create a safety net of shared understanding, humor, and resilience.

Wherever you are, odds are that there is an IW community or event near you. Whether you would rather hike through Times Square or Yellowstone National Park, along the Florida coastline, or in London, Hawaii, or Normandy, an incredible experience awaits you. I think we tend to forget where medicine originally came from. God gave us plants to use as food. (KJV Genesis 1:12 And the Earth brought forth grass and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind and God saw that it was good. Genesis 2:5 And every plant of the field before it was in the earth and every herb of the field before it grew.) Hippocrates’ famous quote: “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.” These all point to the importance of what is now labeled as holistic or natural remedies, which have been around since the beginning of creation and are still used today.

A few of my favorites are: 1 Colloidal Silver.

Most of us are familiar with silver nitrate eye drops administered to babies after birth to lower the percentage of blindness, which became a common practice in the United States in the early 1900s.

Colloidal silver, which is silver in suspension at doses as low as 10 parts per million (ppm) to 500 ppm is a tremendous antibacterial, anti-fungal, and has even been found to serve as an anti-viral. In our household during COVID-19, we used 20 ppm. We swabbed the inside of our noses with it and took orally as preventive measures. 2 Peppermint Oil. Peppermint oil is an excellent versatile oil. It can be used internally for digestive issues, topically on the temples and behind the neck, and in the form of aromatherapy to ease migraines. It can be applied topically for muscle aches and to improve the skin and hair. Please note: Do not use the essential oils at full strength on the skin. All essential oils should always be mixed with a carrier oil such as almond oil, grapeseed oil or olive oil.

3 Bentonite Clay. Bentonite clay has been known to assist in pulling metals out of the body, thus promoting detoxification of the body. One of my favorites applications is to combine Sonne’s #7 liquid bentonite clay and Sonne’s #9 psyllium seed and husk (fiber) and drinking this first thing in the morning to detox.

4 Aloe. Aloe gel is great for external skin issues such as acne, burns, sunburns, rashes, bites and stings, and to decrease inflammation. Internally, the aloe juice (pure aloe juice is recommended) contains vitamins and minerals, and can relieve and soothe the

VOLUNTEERING

for Veteran Connection

I’m a helper; therefore, helping others has always been an integral part of my life. In my encounters with veterans, many are naturally inclined to help others. They also like working with a team and achieving missions, no matter the purpose. But when the contract is up, where does one go to find that team atmosphere and the purposeful mission?

Volunteer work may hold the key to grounding veterans in search of a new purpose and a caring community. The Mission Continues (TMC) provides one opportunity for veterans who want to continue their service to be part of a movement to transform communities. My first encounter with TMC was at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service event. I met many young veterans eager to help Learn and Serve Tampa Inc. and other partnering nonprofits as we cleaned up a city park. They worked alongside youth, families, corporate volunteers, and other veteran volunteers with organizations like the Travis Manion Foundation.

The mission of TMC is to connect veterans with underresourced communities and deploy veteran volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more. I asked the Tampa Platoon Leader, Tara Tilson, a U.S. Army veteran,

how volunteering had impacted her platoon members.

Tilson says, “Veterans that come out find that new or rejuvenated sense of purpose.” She added that the volunteer assignment might allow them to utilize the skills they focused on for so long during their military careers, furthering that sense of purpose.

Tilson says the scariest thing for many veterans, when they leave the armed forces, is not knowing what comes next, feeling alone. You’re no longer part of a team.

Volunteering with a group like TMC allows veterans to rejoin a team of people from the same background.

The name, The Mission Continues, says it all. They can continue to use their skills, make an impact, and be part of a team that sees the greater good.

Volunteering is a way for veterans to learn new skills, meet new people, build a new team, and be productive members of society. It can also give a veteran a reason to live. Tilson says, “I believe that having a sense of purpose or reason, no matter how small or large, for you to get up each day, put on your pants, and walk out your front door, is super important.” She has heard firsthand that being a part of a volunteer mission, being invited, and joining a team has saved lives.

So, make a goal this year to volunteer, and invite other veterans to volunteer with you! You might save a life.

Spirituality

Spirituality can be found in many ways. The spiritual definition is simple: you recognize a feeling, sense, or belief that something greater exists than yourself.

We find solace in a quote from the movie Stigmata (1999) where Frankie says, “The Kingdom of God is inside you, and all around you, not in mansions of wood and stone. Split a piece of wood...and I am there, lift a stone...and you will find Me.” Stigmata may be a horror movie, but this message strikes home.

Another great move from the ‘90s, The Seventh Sign, starring Demi Moore, where Avi, a young Jewish boy, asks a Preist, “ Who’ll be saved, Reverend? The Jew doesn’t think it will be the Muslim. The Muslims don’t think it will be the Christian. The Christian doesn’t think it will be the Buddhist. What if nobody is saved? What if we’re all wrong?”

The Priest never actually answers this question in the movie. It all centers around faith. So, we ask Chaplain Don Hinst for his thoughts...

What is faith?

Where can I find it?

It’s much more than a one-way ticket to heaven. Faith is the key to confidence, peace, contentment, and joy. ”Do not be afraid, for I am with you” Isaiah 43:5. Even though you walk through the valley of the shadow of death, you will fear no evil, for God is with you.

We will probably mess up today and again tomorrow, which doesn’t affect God’s promise: “I am with you.”

There’s no stipulation of where God resides. God is omnipresent; that’s everywhere, not only in religious buildings on certain days and times of the week.

Your Heavenly Father is available 24/7. That’s why I became a chaplain to share with our veterans at the most unlikely places. All too often, people feel uncomfortable attending a house of worship.

Consequently, never learn about their Heavenly Father.

Serving as a chaplain presents the opportunity to share and proclaim God’s promise: “Do not be afraid, for I am with you.”

WITHOUT GLORY After finishing my NCO leadership course, I was assigned the position of assistant team leader for Sergeant Billings’ “A-Team.”

Smitty, Gator, and other men chosen for the Commandoes joined us for several weeks of intensive training. The instruction is not as easily paced as the leadership course was. There are no more hot showers or hot meals. Sleep is limited to a few hours at a time.

The training aims to see how we handle ourselves under stressful situations. We study small unit movement, theory on guerrilla warfare, sabotage, escape and evasion, demolitions, mines, Viet Cong booby traps, communist weapons, artillery, and mortar fire. When we think we’ve reached the end of our ability to learn more and stay awake, more training is added: air support, infantry weapons and deployment, rifle and grenade launchers, machine guns, recoilless rifles, hand grenades, claymore mines, defense positions, and helicopter deployment.

Not everyone made it through the training. Those who did make it want to be here, and with training complete, we can officially be called Air Commandos.

Our team, A-Team, consists of two squads: the demolition element and the security element.

The demolition element is the command-and-control section. It includes the team leader, a radio operator with PRC 77 radio, a medic, one rifleman, and two demolition specialists.

The security element provides protection during movement, in danger areas, such as roads, open spaces, or river crossings, and at the location of the bomb site.

I am responsible for carrying out those assignments as assistant team leader. The element includes the assistant team leader, two machine gunners, and three riflemen.

He is tall and thin, weighing only 135 pounds. He has fiery red hair that is never combed, dark brown eyes, and tons of freckles.

TEMPERAMENT: cheerful and happy but never stops talking.

SHORT-TERM GOALS: get out of the jungle with all his parts.

LONG-TERM GOALS: be a disc jockey like his idol, Wolfman Jack FAVORITE SAYING: “My, my, my, this is your Wolfman.”

Medical Specialist: James Shepardson, Airman First Class, a.k.a. “DOC” Doc is 20 years old and comes from Bay City, Michigan.

He has 30 months in service. In school, he was class president and honor society. He is married to his wife, Paula, and has a son, James. He is of average height and build, with blond hair, blue eyes, and a thin mustache. He

Demolition Specialist: Gary Smith, Airman, a.k.a. “SMITTY” Smitty is 19 years old with only 14 months in service.

Raised in Panama City, Florida, Smitty was not an athlete in school. He looks and acts like “Beaver” on the Leave It To Beaver show. He is the smallest among us at only 5’3” and 125 pounds. He wears dark-rimmed military glasses, thick like coke bottles, and constantly pushes them back in place. He is known for what we call his “Smittyisms.”

He is married to his wife, Karen, but has no children.

You Can Be Part of the Solution

The public is shocked at the suicide rates amongst our service members, veterans, and lawenforcement population. We hear about it all the time through the many active and working organizations attempting to impact reported numbers positively. As a community, we can support these efforts through donations, but what is another way that we can become part of the solution?

The Veteran Health and Wellness segment of FireWatch Magazine is shifting gears for this January edition with a focus on what we can do as a community to honor and support the military and first responder communities.

Dr. Derrick “TC” Copper found himself in an emotional dilemma. A Navy veteran, TC had provided behavioral health services to the Department of Defense, U.S. Army, and Army Substance Abuse Program for 35 years.

In each of these assignments, TC was deeply involved in suicide prevention education efforts.

During his tenure with the U.S. Army, he became a certified LivingWorks ASIST trainer.

When his retirement finally arrived, he admits, “I was done. I had worked in the behavioral health field for so long, I just needed to get away and focus on something else.”

That was, until one day, TC saw a news report of a young person who had taken their own life at a local park. He felt anger and could not understand how this young person’s family, teachers, and friends had not recognized the signs.

“I heard God speak to me,” he said, recalling his struggle with that young person’s story, “God said that I could be part of the problem or part of the solution.”

It became clear to TC that he needed to do something with the knowledge and experience he had earned over his career. He realized his commitment to suicide prevention education remained paramount, resulting in the establishment of the Suicide Prevention Training Institute, a Florida notfor-profit organization.

What Can I Do?

There was an experiment on social media recently. A middle-aged man was walking along a bridge in a busy city. He was rolling an old, battered suitcase alongside him. The area he was walking was a tourist site, and many people were there on the bridge. The man was suddenly distressed, grabbing at his heart and falling to the ground, where he remained sobbing, afraid, and obviously needing help.

For many moments, the crowd continued to walk past him. Some turned and looked back, but they did not stop.

Finally, a man and woman walked past. The woman turned around to look at the man. She let go of her partner’s hand and approached the man on the ground. Her partner followed. It was only then that others began to stop also.

Why did it take so long for anyone to help? Why, once one person stopped, was it a green light for others to stop as well?

It turned out that the man was okay. He was experimenting to show that many people don’t respond to someone in distress. They want to avoid getting involved.

It doesn’t necessarily mean they are bad people. Out of fear, people don’t want to do the wrong thing, and in that split second, they believe they aren’t good enough to help. Someone better suited will come along.

How to React

Regarding suicide awareness and prevention, Dr. Copper explains, “You don’t have to be anything but the person who keeps them alive right now. If you learn to recognize a sign, you can make a difference, even for that moment.”

You can’t assume someone else will help or reach out when someone is at risk. But how do you even know if someone is at risk? There are documented warning signs, but how would we know what they are? What would we say most importantly, and how would we react to someone we may not know?

Moral Obligation

As important as it is to know CPR or basic first aid, we should also know how to prevent suicide from impacting even more community members. Through education, we can learn to identify the risk factors for suicide and equip ourselves with effective intervention skills.

The Suicide Prevention Training Institute (SPTI) is educating to save lives. With Dr. Copper at the helm to share his vast experience and authority to provide the LivingWorks ASIST training program, you too can become part of the solution.

There are more than two centuries of history regarding the American Female in service to her country. It begins with Loretta Walsh, who, on March 21, 1917, became America’s first official enlisted woman in any service when she joined the Navy amid World War I. Even before Loretta Walsh, women have served our armed forces as nurses, seamstresses, and cooks for troops in camps as far back as the Revolutionary War. Some women are also reported to have entered Revolutionary War combat disguised as men. It wasn’t until World War II that all branches of the military enlisted women into their ranks to fill the many non-combat roles required as more than 16 million Americans stepped up to serve the front lines.

In 1948, the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act was signed into law by President Harry S. Truman, allowing women to serve as full-time, permanent members of all branches of the Armed Forces. There were caveats to this law that restricted the number of women who could serve to only 2% of each branch, limiting the ability of women to achieve officer rank, enforcing automatic discharges of pregnant soldiers, and prohibiting women from commanding men or serving in combat positions.

Female service members have made continued strides over the century, but only in the face of significant challenges. Many of which continue to go unspoken, unresolved, and unrecognized.

In the next few editions of Veterans Voices, we will share our conversations with women who were active members of our armed services across the 20th and 21st centuries. We asked them to share the challenges they have faced and their ideas on improving inclusion, representation, and appreciation for our mighty female forces. This month we begin our series with Anna’s story.

ANNA 1977 – 1981

I began my military career in the Air Force in 1977 and was stationed at MacDill AFB for four years.

I lived on base amongst other female service members on the third floor of the barracks, which was for females only.

That didn’t stop this one guy who would hang around the female barracks at night, go into the female showers, and menace everyone. He attacked me one dreadful night, and the security police didn’t want to take my report. They were insinuating that I brought it on, asking me, “What were you wearing?” and “What’s the matter, you don’t like being touched?”.

My First Sergeant was furious and ultimately assisted me in filing a report that eventually banned the attacker from the base. But, there were other incidents during my time in the Air Force; one offender was my Master Sergeant.

Later, while serving in the Army and stationed in Bosnia, where I met my second husband, a Marine, I was sexually harassed. Again, they refused to take my report, requiring my then-husband to get involved and force the issue. This time, it ended up in Article 15 for the offender. Why did getting anyone to pay attention require a man to be involved in the complaint?

Despite these events, my experience in the Army wasn’t all bad. To enter Army service, I was required to take basic training. I was 37 at the time. I was part of the first flight of females to wear men’s fatigues. Just a week before, the women were still in skirts. It was a good experience because, alongside the younger Soldiers, we all worked as a team. When I got my Sergeant rank back and was again in charge of people, I tried to be a good leader, be fair, and do a good job. But there were always those who only saw me as a woman and couldn’t offer respect.

I was ultimately medically discharged due to a serious back injury and elbow injuries resulting in several operations. I left the military with 10% disability.

After my service and over the years, I struggled to maintain relationships. I would find myself in situations that would take me back to dark places. At my home in Massachusetts, you had to go down a long hallway with cement walls and no windows to get to the bathroom. I couldn’t go down there by myself. It reminded me of the barracks.

It wasn’t until 2013 that I got signed up at the VA and had a good female doctor who asked me about my military experiences. That was the first time I talked about my sexual trauma in over thirtyfive years. I was assigned a female therapist and saw her weekly for a while. I didn’t realize I had been having anxiety attacks. I never understood why I always had the urge to run. In my civilian life, I would catch myself running to the bathroom at work in tears. I just never connected everything. The VA determined that I suffered from PTSD, and my disability rating was adjusted.

Fast forward to a recent experience. I was in the emergency room and had been waiting for many hours. There was another veteran there waiting also and he could tell I was in much pain. When they called his name, he said, “You know what? Give my slot to her. She’s in more pain than me.” I was very grateful.

Other male veterans show much more respect now than when we were on active duty. It could be because we no longer wear the uniform and live by rank. We aren’t competing anymore.

The military has come a long way for female service members, but we will always be a minority. In civilian life, seeing more veteran support groups centered around female veterans would be excellent.

I would even reconsider organizations like the American Legion and DAV if more females were involved in those groups.
