The Five Mile Beach Volunteer Firemen's Association (FMBVFA) welcomes you back to the Wildwoods for the state convention and expo. We are still adapting to convention life after Covid.

Again you will find the best companies serving both fire and rescue. On display is the finest in new technology in fire and rescue tools as well as the latest in fire apparatus. Take your time walking through the display tents

and lots so you don't miss out.

Again this year, Jitney service is scheduled to run from southern Wildwood Crest to the convention and expo area beginning at 0700 on Friday and Saturday mornings. You can catch the Jitney north on Atlantic Avenue from Jefferson to Farragut Road, then north from Farragut on Ocean Ave to the convention area.

Drop off and pickup will be on Andrews and Ocean Avenues.

Handicap parking is available between Baker and Montgomery Avenues on Ocean Avenue. Handicap placards or plates are required to park. Handicap drop-off is also available at Taylor and Ocean Avenues.

As Always, we hope you enjoy your visit to the Wildwoods and our beach and boardwalk.

Chiefs, Delegates, Life Members

The Officers and Executive Committee of the New Jersey State Firemen’s Association would like to welcome everyone to the 2022 Annual Convention. Although health and safety conditions have improved as compared to the last two years, we are still monitoring conditions and ask for your patience as we try to take care of the necessary business of the association.

The tram cars and jitney service will be operating on Friday and Saturday and you need to check or website www.njsfa.com for the hours they will be operating. If you want to continue seeing these services in future years, make sure you take advantage of their availability this year.

Friday’s session will contain the Annual Memorial Service and business meeting. Registration will be from 0700 to 1015. To try to keep the lines down, please limit those coming in to the Convention Center to just those individuals who have business there or are required to be there. Delegates and Life Members should have their white and red registration cards in hand as they enter the Convention Center to help speed up the registration process. The Memorial Service will begin at 1000 and the business meeting will immediately follow. We will be taping the Memorial Service so that it can be added to our website for viewing at any time. Although we do our best to not miss the listing of any members that pass, we are human and mistakes may happen.

If you notice any omissions from the list of our departed members, please see one of the officers after the meeting so we can investigate any unfortunate errors that may have occurred. Deborah Hospital will be onsite on Friday conducting the health screening that they do every year.

The election of your State Officers and voting on three ballot questions will take place on Saturday, September 17, at the Convention

Center from 0700 to 1200. Again, to try to keep the lines down, please limit those coming in to the Convention Center to just those individuals who have business there or are required to be there.

Delegates and Life Members should have their white and red registration cards in hand as they enter the Convention Center to help speed up the voting process.

We set up a “suggested” voting time schedule by county in order to try to keep the lines short. Although not mandatory, please try to adhere to that Robert F. Ordway schedule. Information concerning the President schedule is available from your local New Jersey State Relief Association Secretary. Anyone Firemen’s Association that attended their County Caucus was also given a packet of information which contained the suggested voting time schedule. You will be electing your State Officers for the coming year and even though we have no opposition, we ask for your support. The three ballot questions are required “housekeeping” questions and we ask you to vote “yes” on them. The American Red Cross will be onsite Saturday from 0900 until 1400 conducting a blood drive.

Fire & Safety Services Hits 21 Years with the Burn Foundation President David Russell of Fire & Safety Services, Ltd., of South Plainfield and Pierce Manufacturing, have committed to another year in support of the Burn Foundation. His dedication and support of the Burn Foundation has helped the burn care and burn patient communities going back to the new millennium.

Artist Joseph Getsinger will again be presenting an original, limited-edition Burn Foundation image for 2022 at the Wildwood Firemen’s Convention on September 16 and 17, 2022. It is the Burn Foundation’s most important fundraiser.

And Joe Getsinger’s art has been a major influence in the foundation’s successful fundraising efforts in Wildwood for 42 years.

Welcome Brothers and Sisters, On behalf of the Wildwood City Fire Department, it is my pleasure once again, as Chief of Department, to welcome you all back to our great city for the 145th New Jersey State Firemen’s Convention. I would like to start by thanking President Robert Ordway and his fellow officers, along with the members of the Five Mile Beach Volunteer Firemen’s Association (FMBVFA) for their hard work and coordinated efforts in making sure that the state convention is a success every year. This is no small task and requires the attention of all those

involved year-round.

We consider our role as the host city’s fire department a true honor and privilege.

Countless friendships and partnerships have been developed over the years as a result of the annual convention. This is something we, in the Wildwood City Fire Department, value deeply. The department remains committed to providing a quick response and ensuring the safety of our visiting brothers and sisters and their families.

In closing, I would like to thank all of you for your continued friendship and support for our department. We are sincerely

grateful that you continue to choose the City of Wildwood to be the host of the New Jersey State Firemen’s Convention. I wish you all a safe and enjoyable convention.

Fire News Welcomes You to the 2022 New Jersey Fire Expo!

It is hard to believe that 17-years ago, the dedicated staff at Fire News embarked on an adventure and created the New Jersey Fire News. Thank you to the photographers who shared their thoughts with me to make sure our newspaper represented the entire state of New Jersey. Many of you still visit us at our booth at the New Jersey Fire Expo.

It seems like yesterday that I remember traveling to Wildwood to participate in the convention, along with Publisher Frank Trotta, Chief Operating Officer (then-Executive Editor) Tim Edwards and Advertising Director Barbara Connolly. In 2013, Fire News was asked to become the official newspaper of the New Jersey Fire Expo. This honor, that we proudly embarked on, brought us closer to the New Jersey fire service. After nine years of working with the Five Mile Beach Volunteer Firemen's Association, we worked together, overcoming the problems of the Covid pandemic and other problems like a major fire in 2013 that forced firefighters to put everything aside to battle the flames on a major boardwalk at the Fun Town Pier in Seaside Heights.

Thankfully, as they say in theater, "The show must go on." And, yes, the fire went out and the NJ Fire Expo successfully went on.

Our goal of representing the New Jersey

fire service in a positive light has become a passionate issue to our staff and to the photographers who provide us with the stories for our publication. No one should ever lose sight that the photographers and department Public Information Officers are preserving the history of the New Jersey Fire Service. Fire News thanks everyone for their passionate service, and takes this responsibility seriously.

Since 2013, Fire News continued to represent the New Jersey fire service and continued to highlight our advertisers, keeping you up to date with our Industry News and Special Feature pages in our newspaper. We did this to highlight those who work hard to support all firefighters with the latest and greatest products that make the firefighter's job safer. Be sure that you stop by our advertiser's booths at the convention to discuss some of the new products that are available to you.

Every month, we reach your firehouse. As you look through Fire News, ask yourself if your department is represented in our monthly paper. It is important that your department is represented. If you do not see your department, give some serious consideration to appointing a department Public Information Officer who can send us news from your department. If you are worried about the tech-

Atlantic City Electric is Prepared for Summer Storm and Hurricane Season With summer now in full swing, Atlantic City Electric continues to perform essential work to ready the local energy grid to meet increased customer demand and keep homes and businesses powered all summer long. Each day, Atlantic City Electric performs maintenance and grid modernization upgrades to further enhance service reliability for its 565,000 South Jersey customers, and to harden energy infrastructure against the growing impacts of more severe weather as a result of climate change.

As a result of ongoing reliability projects and grid resiliency efforts to strengthen energy infrastructure against increasingly severe weather, Atlantic City Electric customers experienced the lowest frequency of electric outages ever in 2020 and again in 2021, which is a testament to the ongoing benefits of implementing best practices across the Exelon family of companies.

In addition to work to enhance the energy

grid, Atlantic City Electric completes hundreds of tasks to prepare for the summer season, including system work, testing and drills. As part of the Exelon family of companies, Atlantic City Electric shares best practices with its sister companies - BGE, ComEd, Delmarva Power, PECO and Pepco - and participates in collaborative emergency response training exercises to ensure it can provide seamless support and resources during a storm or emergency restoration effort.

Just as Atlantic City Electric prepares for summer weather and severe storms, the company encourages its customers to be ready as well.

Here are some tips: Assemble an emergency storm kit. Include battery-powered radio, flashlight, a first-aid kit, battery-powered or windup clock, extra batteries, medications, multi-purpose tool, and list of important/emergency phone numbers.

On October 23, 2021, Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Company Safety Officer Prioli, age 89, responded to the fire department for a call of a vehicle extrication that was ultimately cancelled. He left the fire house and was walking home when he experienced a medical emergency. Emergency personnel responded to the scene where they found Safety Officer Prioli in cardiac arrest. He passed away shortly thereafter.

Jersey City Fire Department Battalion Chief Ruddy, age 49, completed a 24-hour shift on December 8, 2021. During the previous 24 hours, he had responded to nine emergency incidents. These incidents included automatic fire alarms, a natural gas leak, and the report of a cooking fire in a restaurant. He arrived home shortly thereafter. Chief Ruddy complained to his wife of not feeling well and asked her to call for an ambulance. Chief Ruddy was transported by ambulance to a hospital near his home. Upon his arrival at the hospital, Chief Ruddy was conscious but lost consciousness shortly after his arrival. Hospital personnel attempted to treat and resuscitate him, but they were unsuccessful. Chief Ruddy was pronounced deceased at the hospital. His death was due to a heart attack.

Anthony Michael Carfagno Firefighter Atlantic City Fire Department Firefighter Carfagno, age 58, was exposed to Covid-19 during on-duty activities. He became ill and his health worsened. He died on December 21, 2021, as a result of Covid-19 complications.

Vincent Doffont Firefighter/EMT On March 19, 2022, Harrison Fire Department Firefighter/EMT Vincent Doffont, age 37, had returned to the fire station from a training exercise assisting newer members with structural roof venting. While in the shower, Firefighter/EMT Doffont collapsed and was found unconscious by fellow firefighters. He was immediately rushed to the University Hospital in Newark where he was pronounced deceased. The cause of his death has yet to be determined.

FMBVFA Partners Again with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital A few years ago, the Five Mile Beach Volunteer Firemen’s Association (FMBVFA; host of the New Jersey State Firemen’s Convention) teamed up with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to raise money and fight for a cure. Over the past five years, this partnership has raised nearly $35,000 at the New Jersey State Firemen’s Convention for St. Jude families across the country and in our communities. Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food — because all they should worry about is helping their child live.

This September 16-17, 2022, we invite you to join us at the NJ Firemen’s Expo at the Wildwood Convention Center to support the children at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital once again. January 26, 2022 North Wildwood Fire Department Ladder 2 & Wildwood Fire Department Squad 3 (A Platoon) were dispatched to the 200 east block of 24th Ave for a possible structure fire. Deputy 2 & Chief 3 arrived reported smoke coming from the dwelling.

Squad 3 arrived and started to extinguish the fire. Ladder 2 conducted a primary search & checked for extension. Do to the quick

response the fire was primarily contained to the exterior of the dwelling with minor extension to the 1st floor apartment. 2 occupants were evaluated for smoke inhalation. 1 of which was transported by Wildwood Crest EMS to the hospital. The incident is currently being investigated by the Cape May County Fire Marshals Office.

Wildwood Squad Co. 3 (A Platoon) responded on the North Wildwood Box Alarm to 1600 Ocean Ave. for a building fire. North Wildwood Fire Department Ladder Co. 2 arrived and reported smoke showing from the second floor. The alarm was upgraded to a 1st alarm assignment adding Rescue Co. 3 on the incident. Ladder Co. 2 conducted a primary search and rescued a dog located in the fire unit. Squad Co. 3 and Ladder Co. 2 made quick work of the fire holding it to the room of origin. There were no other injuries and the fire is under investigation by the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office. Due to an immediate response by properly staffed companies, damage was minimized and a family pet quickly rescued.

The driver suffered minor injuries and was treated on scene. The accident is under investigation by the Wildwood Police Department.

Wildwood Squad Co. 3 (A Platoon) was dispatched with North Wildwood Fire Department on the North Wildwood box alarm for a reported dwelling fire on Ocean Avenue. While en route NWPD dispatch confirmed a working fire and the 1st alarm assignment was dispatched.

Deputy 2 arrived and reported smoke showing from the third floor of a single family dwelling.

Squad Co. 3 and Ladder Co. 2 made an aggressive interior attack. Companies found high heat and zero visibility on the 3rd floor. Crews located the fire in a third floor bedroom and quickly knocked down the fire. The CMC Fire Marshal’s office investigated and determined the cause of the fire to be accidental (electrical). Great work by the companies operating on scene containing the fire to the room of origin. Stone Harbor Fire Department provided coverage for the island during the incident. Also assisting were Anglesea Volunteer Fire Company No.1 , North Wildwood Volunteer Fire Company, Wildwood Crest Volunteer Fire Department and the Rio Grande Fire Company.

April 16 , 2022, the Wildwood Fire Department assisted the North Wildwood Fire Department with removing six occupants from a boat that was taking on water in Hereford Inlet. A great coordinated effort by all agencies involved was key in quickly removing all those aboard.

June 14, 2022, the Wildwood Fire Department Squad 3 (B Platoon) and North Wildwood Fire Department Ladder Co. 2 were dispatched to Ocean Avenue for a structure fire. Chief of Department Ernie Troiano III arrived to heavy smoke showing from the seconnd floor of a two-story motel. The alarm was upgraded to a 1st alarm which brings off-duty City firefighters, Wildwood Crest FD, Rio Grande FD, and Stone Harbor FD to the scene. Firefighters began an aggressive attack on the fire that was burning in the cockloft area. Heavy fire had taken possession of this void space between the ceiling and roof and a second alarm was transmitted bringing additional resources from the Villas FD, Erma FD, and Cape May City FD. Firefighters cut a trench cut in the roof of the motel which is used to stop the fire from spreading to uninvolved areas. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to one wing of the motel and prevent it from spreading to any of the surrounding properties. The fire was placed under control in about 90 minutes.

A third alarm was transmitted for additional manpower and station coverage. There were no injuries and damage is estimated at $500,000. The CMC Fire Marshal’s Office investigated the fire and determined it was accidental, caused by welding that was taking place on the property as part of renovations. Units operated on the scene for about 3-1/2 hours before clearing. Great coordinated efforts by all companies operating on the scene and thank you to those who provided station coverage for the city. Assisting were Wildwood Crest Volunteer Fire Department, Rio Grande Fire Company, Stone Harbor Volunteer Fire Company 1, West Wildwood Fire-Department , Villas Volunteer Fire Department , Erma Volunteer Fire Company Station 62, City of Cape May Fire Department, Ocean View Volunteer Fire Company, Green Creek Fire Company, Cape May Court House Volunteer Fire Company and the City of Wildwood Police Department.

Up and Down the Beach North Wildwood Trains Wildwood D Platoon attended in-service training on their new roof rope rescue system. With the city being a beachfront community there are few mid-rise buildings that cannot be reached by a ground ladder or aerial in the event there is a victim trapped on an upper floor. This system is designed to lower a firefighter to a trapped victim from the roof of the building. The training session was instructed by Captain Carter.

On June 16, 2022, 12 volunteer firefighters from the Anglesea Volunteer Fire Company 1 assembled to review attack hoseline advancement. The crews reviewed the standard attack hose setups on the engine and the ladder. The crew also reviewed the specific hose load style, the deployment methods and operation concerns.

The crew was then presented the opportunity to try the Triple Pack hose load style. This style was packed on the engine and then

deployed by the team. A discussion ensued on the pros and cons with using this hose pack style. Members then reviewed the proper way to restore the hoselines back onto the apparatus. This step, not always the favorite chore of firefighters, is crucial to the success of deploying the hoseline successfully and efficiently at the next incident.

President’s Message...continued from page 3 Committee, continue to move the Association forward in a very positive and effective manner. We currently have three programs that the NJSFA administers to assist our members and their families.

We have over 190 firefighters participating in the Health Care Program this calendar year, and since the inception of the program over 5½ years ago, 410 firefighters have received assistance. This reimbursement program is available to any member who is receiving care from a licensed caregiver working with a licensed health care firm. If the firefighter is receiving that care at home, an adult day care facility, an assisted living facility (the care portion of the charges and not the rent), or a rehabilitation facility, the reimbursement is an up to maximum of $6,000 per month on the net portion of the costs for care that is not being reimbursed from other providers. Starting this August, if the firefighter is in a long-term/nursing home type of care facility, the reimbursement is now an up to a maximum of $12,000 per month on the net portion of the costs for care that is not being reimbursed from other providers. This benefit is available to eligible member regardless of where they live in the continental US as long as the caregivers and the healthcare firm they work for are licensed in the state where care is being given. Contact your Local Relief Association for more information or call the NJSFA. Starting in January 2021, the Healthcare Program was opened up to spouses. Spouses of current members and non-remarried surviving spouses of deceased Qualified Firefighters are able to receive a monthly maximum of $2,000 in reimbursement. The reimbursement is towards the net portion of the costs for care that is not being reimbursed from other providers. On July 1, 2019, the Burial Benefit was raised to $12,000 and Line of Duty Burial Benefit to $36,000. Any Local Relief Association Officer can submit the initial online notification form and should do so as soon as you hear of a member passing, even if that member passed a number of years ago. The benefit payment will be prorated and paid based on the allowable amount on the date of their passing. In the fiscal year that just ended (June 30), over $12,000,000 was paid out.

Relief applications are available to all members should a need suddenly occur in their lives. Completed Applications with supporting documentation are reviewed by the Local Association for approval. Retired Qualified Firefighters and surviving spouses of qualified members are also eligible to apply for relief. In addition, if the need is there, Special Relief and Supplemental Relief forms should be filled out and submitted to the State Office for approval. Once approved by the Advisory Committee, the State Office will issue a check for the amount and notice will be sent to the Local Association on that amount that they may pay towards the Supplemental Relief request. As always, supporting documentation must be submitted with the fully completed applications. The Relief Program is a calendar year-based program and all payments approved in a given year must be paid out by December 31 of that year and cannot carry over to the following year.

From 2019 forward, we made a change to the percentage calculation used to determine Qualifying Status. We eliminated the platoon system and lowered the minimum necessary percentage to 25 percent.

Active Firefighters from age 18 to 57 can now join our association.

Applications must be received in the State Office prior to the applicant turning 58. Local associations should be using State Office-supplied Applications for Membership with a revision date of either REV 5/19 or REV 7/21. Applications sent in with an earlier revision date will be returned and a new current application will need to be submitted. The physical on the application is now good for one year from the date of the physical and can be administered by and signed by a New Jersey licensed Physician, Physician’s Assistant or Nurse Practitioner.

We are up-to-date on conducting Field Exams and Local Applications for Relief were collected to be reviewed in the State Office. Once reviewed, the applications were returned by your County Executive Committeeperson. Going over the applications at the State office has allowed the review to ensure need, and that the proper additional documentation is attached to the applications. Everyone is

reminded that for Relief to be paid, “NEED” must be demonstrated and fully documented.

If you may find yourself needing the type of services offered by the NJ Firemen’s Home. Contact the Firemen’s Home or any of the County Managers to the home for information on the application process. The Firemen’s Home is funded by the same insurance tax that funds the Local Relief Associations and the NJSFA State Office. If you find that for some reason the NJ Firemen’s Home does not meet your needs, take advantage of our Health Care Reimbursement Program.

We urge our members and their families to take advantage of the “A Gift from Captain Buscio” program, Deborah Heart and Lung Center, RWJ/St. Barnabas Burn Center, and the NJ Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Please review the literature handed out at your County Caucus Elections and take advantage of their services.

Looking Back All-Hands Barn Fire for Indian Mills On September 8, 2021, Taskforce 28 was dispatched for a reported barn fire with a “big explosion” in the area of Manitoba Trail in Shamong. Due to a lack of hydrants in the area, a tender strike team was added to the assignment. Crews from Shamong, Tabernacle, Medford, Medford Lakes, Vincentown, Evesham, and Hammonton, operated for about two hours. No injuries were reported and the Burlington County Fire Marshal’s Office was investigating the cause of the fire.

Multi-Car Fire Extends to Dwelling In the early morning of July 5, 2021, Newark firefighters were dispatched to a house fire on Sussex Avenue. Crews arrived to find heavy fire in multiple cars in a lot adjacent to the given address that extended up the B side of a three-story flat-top multi-dwelling.

The on-duty deputy requested a second-alarm assignment due to the heavy fire conditions. EMS personnel provided medical attention/evaluations to several residents including a family of four (two adults and two children) who suddenly appeared during the firefight from the small alleyway between the car lot and the house where firefighters were operating.

Looking Back 3-Car MVA Leaves a Mess The Mays Landing Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched on October 10, 2021, at 1342, to Ocean Heights and Harbor Avenues to assist police and EMS for a clean up of a spill resulting from a three-car MVA. - Fire News photo by Ken Badger

Extrication at Farmington MVA The volunteer fire companies of Farmington and Cardiff, along with Egg Harbor Township Police, EMS, and Atlanticare Paramedics, responded to the 6500 block of Washington Avenue for a report of an MVA. The crash was the result of a high-speed impact between a Humvee and a pickup, trapping the driver in the pickup. Firefighters removed both doors and B Post and assisted EMS with patient removal. The cause of the crash was under investigation by the Egg Harbor Township Police Department.

Looking Back Woman Dies as Result of 3-Alarm Blaze A raging fire in East Windsor Township in Mercer County, on March 5, 2022, destroyed one home, damaged two others, and burned a 74-year-old woman so badly that she later died as a result of her injuries. It was 1425. when East Windsor firefighters and area mutual aid companies began being dispatched to Bennington Drive for a reported explosion and structure fire. While en route, Monroe Township Tower 57 reported a column of smoke in the sky and requested a second alarm. Firefighters arrived to find the middle-of-the-row dwelling fullyinvolved. The home’s sole occupant had already been pulled from the flames by a neighbor. Critically burned, she was flown

by NJSP medevac to the burn center at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, where she remained until her death on April 4.

Easter Sunday Plane Crash On Easter Sunday, April 17, 2022, the Fairfield Fire Department responded to the Essex County Airport for a plane crash. A 2020 Citation CJ3 was attempting to land when it overshot the runway and slid down an embankment into a brook. The three occupants were uninjured but the 400 gallons of jet fuel was spilling into the waterway. Nutley Fire HazMat responded to the scene as a dam was created downstream. West Caldwell responded with an engine and a rescue to assist with booms for the water.

Looking Back 11 Alarms for Passaic Warehouse Blaze A major fire destroyed a large factory/warehouse and pressed firefighters to the limit in Passaic on January 14, 2022. Companies initially dispatched to a car fire on Route 21 just before 2030 quickly realized they had more than a car fire when they reported a large column of smoke while en route.

On arrival, companies had a large factory, approximately 250- x 325feet, and a second alarm was requested, quickly followed by a third. The main exposure was a large warehouse that housed a pool supply company and stored a large quantity of chlorine; crews were successful in protecting that building. A total of 11 alarms were transmitted bringing over 200 firefighters from six counties to the scene. The fire was placed under control approximately 12 hours later.

Brush Fire in Cologne Requires Air Drop The volunteer fire companies of Cologne and Mays Landing from the Township of Hamilton Fire Department in Atlantic County responded to Walmart Drive on April 15, 2022, at 1733 for a report of a brush fire. Firefighters arrived along with New Jersey Forest Fire Service C-7 for a quarter-acre of wildland burning. Firefighters were assisted by an air drop of water from Airtractor 61.

2 Found Dead at Mullica Blaze The Mullica Township Fire Department in Atlantic County responded to a report of a structure fire in the 1500 block of Hamburg Avenue just after midnight on February 20, 2022. The house sat at the end of a long driveway and, because the Egg Harbor City Fire Department is closer, they also responded The fire was investigated by the New Jersey Division of Fire Investigators who found two deceased persons, summoning Investigators from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.

Looking Back Tabernacle All-Hands On March 17, 2022, Taskforce 43 was dispatched for a fully involved two-story, single-family dwelling that was well off with no car in the driveway.

Due to a lack of hydrants in the area, a tender strike team was alerted. The homeowner’s vehicle was in the garage, which prompted command and the NJ State Police to attempt to locate them. The homeowner was located in a nearby town.

2-Alarm Blaze Destroys Perth Amboy Home Two firefighters were injured battling a blaze that gutted a two-family dwelling in Perth Amboy, on May 7, 2022, at 1255. Perth Amboy firefighters were dispatched to William Street.

Upon their arrival, heavy smoke was showing from all floors of the 2-1/2 story structure and heavy fire was discovered in the basement. A second alarm was quickly sounded for mutual aid. Six people were left homeless as a result of the fire. Two injured firefighters were treated at local hospitals. Companies that operated on scene included Perth Amboy Engines 1, 2 and 3, Trucks 2 and 3, and Rescue 1, along with Engine 3 (Melrose) from Sayreville and Truck 6 (Woodbridge) and Rescue 8 (Hopelawn) from Woodbridge.

Rescues Made at Three-Alarm Trenton Blaze Two squatters were rescued from what was supposed to be a vacant apartment complex during a three-alarm blaze in the state capital during the early hours of June 10, 2022. Crews arrived to find smoke showing from the front of one of the middle buildings of what had once been the Clinton Court Apartments. The second and third floors on the building’s rear side were then found to be heavily involved. The incident was elevated to a third alarm shortly after 0130.

Looking Back 2 Die, 1 Injured in South Hackensack Blaze

At approximately 0315, on June 10, 2022, South Hackensack Fire Department was dispatched for a house fire on Agar Place. On arrival, companies were confronted with heavy fire from an occupied 1-1/2 story frame dwelling with two people reported trapped and a second alarm was transmitted bringing mutual aid to the fire. Under severe conditions, an elderly woman was located in the front first floor of the building and removed in cardiac arrest. As fire broke through the roof, a third alarm was transmitted and members were temporarily withdrawn from the building. As the heavy fire was knocked down, crews re-entered and located a male victim in the rear of the home, he was quickly removed and turned over to EMS in cardiac arrest. The fire was brought under control in about 90 minutes, however companies remained on the scene through the morning while an investigation was conducted by the South Hackensack Fire Prevention Bureau, county arson squad and county prosecutor’s office. One additional female was treated for smoke inhalation and no firefighters were injured. The home was a total loss and the two rescued people succumbed to their injuries.

Reflections on 9/11 and a Busy Fall Season As I write this editorial, the date is September 1, 2022. This editorial is my October editorial.

Sitting at my desk, my mind is reflecting ahead to September 11, 2022. Taking a few moments remembering the day our nation was attacked, it is our duty to never forget September 11, 2001. I remember driving to work on a clear crisp day.

The major story on the radio was about a “small” airplane that crashed into the World Trade Center. When I arrived at work, I immediately turned on the news and realized the airplane was not a small plane and my city was probably under attack. Yes, we were under attack. I reflected and shared my recollection with my readers for the past 21 years.

Last year, I attended as many memorial services as possible. One year later I find myself thanking many of my photographers who joined me and spread throughout as many communities as possible, capturing photographs of the memorial services. Fire News utilized our photographs in our 9/11 20th Anniversary-Fire News Remembrance and Tribute edition. This magazine was a work of art that remembered all those lost on September 11, 2001, and continued paying tribute to those that passed away over the past 20 years due to illnesses spurred by toxic chemicals generated by the attack. When I pass

Memorial Sloan Kettering Medical Center, it is still common to find an FDNY Firefighter Transport Unit waiting outside of the hospital to bring one of our loved ones back home.

As we move into 2023, try to think about something special your department can do to bring peace in our world. Plan on reflecting with your neighboring departments to never forget September 11, 2001. Remember to never forget those that continue to be lost to 9/11 diseases.

Never Forget!

As the summer months are passing us by and we enter the fall, are you prepared to do your job under different conditions? Already I am finding that the windows on my car are fogging up on the inside, making response a little slower.

Before you know it, the inside fog will move to the outside of your car windows, and you will be reminded that winter is not far away. Please take the time to clear off your frosted windows before you respond to a call. Think about the children who are waiting at school bus stops. Use caution while responding through school zones and bus stops. I have seen two students who were badly hurt when they tried to run across a busy street to catch a bus that they were late for.

Is your fire prevention program updated with new ideas to bring to the kids in your district?

Yes, September and October are busy times in the fire service. Polish off your ideas and incorporate new activities into your Safety Programs.

If you need help, meet with your Fire Prevention Committees to discuss what you can do to embellish your Fire Prevention Program.

Remember; if it wasn’t for the beep, you would still be asleep! Change your smoke and CO detector batteries or if you have 10-year detectors, check their dates to ensure that they are still good.

Cover Story

Manalapan House Destroyed

On August 19, 2022, at approximately 1600, the Manalapan Township Fire Department, along with Millstone, Freehold, Englishtown and Howell, were dispatched to a single-family dwelling on Regency Way for a report of a fully involved structure fire with animal entrapment.

Upon arrival, heavy fire was showing from the Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and Delta sides of the 2-1/2 story wood frame structure. Ten minutes later there was a full collapse on the Delta side of the building while defensive operations were underway. Additional tankers from the Monmouth County Tanker Task Force also responded to the scene. The NJFFS dispatched units to the area due to the Jamesburg Fire Tower reporting a large column of smoke. Brush trucks responded to extinguish any embers that were falling in the nearby brush. Unfortunately, the families two dogs were trapped and perished in the blaze. The homeowners were not present at the time the fire broke out. The rubble rekindled the following morning and was quickly extinguished by responding personnel. Car Fire on the GSP

On July 31, 2022, Berkeley Fire Station 20 was dispatched to the area of Exit 77 southbound on the Garden State Parkway for a reported car fire. Chief 2000 arrived to an engine compartment fire

with the car on the shoulder of the highway. Engine Tanker 2011 stretched the bumper line and quickly knocked down the fire.

Collapses at Paramus Blaze

At just before 0500 on June 17, 2022, the Paramus Fire Department responded to a house fire on Village Circle West.

While en route, companies were advised that police units on scene were reporting a working fire. The home, a large 2-1/2 story frame dwelling, was fully involved on arrival of fire crews. A 2-1/2 inch handline and a deck gun were quickly put into operation as command requested mutual aid to the scene. All occupants were confirmed out of the home as fire broke through the roof and some local collapses started to occur. Members were not permitted to enter the building due to the volume of fire and condition of the fire building. One tower ladder, 2 ladder pipes, a deck gun and several handlines were put into operation and the fire was placed under control at around 0710. No injuries were reported and the fire was under investigation.

Evesham Shed, Vehicles Burn

On July 5, 2022, while operating on a different incident, District 22 units were alerted to a possible structure fire on the southern end of town. Evesham Deputy Chief Zane arrived and found a shed and ATVs on fire. Engine 2211 arrived and extinguished the fire quickly. Crews remained on location to assist the fire marshal with an investigation. No injuries were reported.

Manchester House Fire On July 22, 2022, the Manchester Fire Career Staff Squad 13 and all volunteer houses were alerted for a reported fire in the rear of a home on 12th Avenue.

Squad 13 encountered smoke en route and arrived to heavy fire in the rear of a 1-1/2 story wood frame and confirmed the working fire. An engine, ladder, and RIT responded from Toms River as crews began an offensive attack. The bulk of the fire was quickly knocked down as extensive overhaul was conducted throughout the home.

Barnegat Ave. Rollover On July 31, 2022, Toms River East Dover Station 28 and Silverton EMS responded to Barnegat Avenue for a two-car MVA with a rollover. The rolled over vehicle was T-boned in the intersection, overturned and struck a tree. All occupants were able to selfextricate but one patient was transported to CMC for evaluation.

Trailer & Truck Fire On July 27, 2022, Toms River Stations 29 and 30 were dispatched to Fielders Lane for a trailer fire. First units on scene confirmed a fully involved landscaping trailer on fire with extension to the attached pickup. The first due engine from Pleasant Plains stretched a bumper line, quickly extinguishing the fire, while Silverton assisted with overhaul.

Hackensack 2-Alarmer

At around 0815 on April 3, 2022, the Hackensack Fire Department responded to Fair Street for a house fire. While en route, Deputy 4 reported a column of smoke visible. On arrival, companies were confronted with a two-family 2-1/2 story wood frame dwelling with heavy smoke pushing from the second floor and attic, and visible fire showing from two windows on the C/D corner of the second floor. A second alarm was requested. Mutual aid came from Teaneck, Englewood and Bogota, while additional mutual aid covered the city. Five handlines were put into operation as the fire extended into the attic. The fire was placed under control after 90 minutes. One firefighter and one occupant suffered minor injuries. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental.

Evesham All Hands On August 4, 2022, District 22 units were dispatched for reports of an explosion and fire on the back porch of a dwelling in Evesham. Deputy Chief Zane arrived and found smoke showing from the Charlie side. Engine 2231 arrived and quickly knocked down the fire on the deck and held it to minor extension to the dwelling. No injuries were reported.

Units from Voorhees, Waterford and Medford also responded.

Quick Stop Saves Hackensack Row At around 2215 on June 17, 2022, Hackensack Engine 2 was dispatched for an outside smoke condition in the area of Summit Avenue and Thompson Street. On arrival Lieutenant Parisik requested the box be filled out for a heavy smoke condition in the area from an unknown source. The remainder of the first alarm was dispatched as E-2 continued to search for obvious fire. The fire desk received an additional call through HPD of a garage fire on Cambridge Terrace and E-2 responded to that location and confirmed a working fire in a garage located in the center of a row of about 20, all with a common attic space. Heavy fire was venting through the roof as two lines were stretched and the ladder gained entry. The fire was quickly knocked down with minor extension into the garages on each side but the fire was kept from spreading throughout the row. Deputy 3 placed the fire under control in approximately 45 minutes.

Church Fire in Ocean Gate On the evening of July 14, 2022, the Ocean Gate Fire Department was dispatched to East Bayview for a church on fire. On arrival, heavy smoke was found showing from a large two-story wood frame church and mutual aid was requested to the scene. Bayville Station 17 and Forked River Station 60 along with the Ocean County Fire Marshalls responded. Crews found heavy fire in the basement where a transitional attack was utilized to knock down the bulk of the fire. Entry was made to extinguish the remaining fire and the fire wasn’t placed under control until nearly an hour after arrival.

Loaner Spartan from Upper Greenwood Lake This 1995 Spartan / 3D pumper was originally built and served the Upper Greenwood Lake Fire Company 5 of West Milford. It was recently replaced by a brand-new Pierce pumper that was delivered earlier last year, and is now on loan to a neighboring department while one of their pumpers is out for repair.

Medevac for MC MVA On July 31, 2022, the Silverton First Aid Squad responded to Fischer Boulevard for a MVA involving a motorcycle. Severe injuries required a medevac, so Island Heights Station 53 was tasked with securing the LZ. Engine 5301 cleared the ball field next to their station where Robert Wood Johnson LifeFlight landed to transport the patient.

Rollover on Gladney Ave. On July 28, 2022, Toms River Stations 25 and 26 along with Island Heights Station 53 were dispatched to Gladney Avenue for a reported rollover with entrapment. Chief 2500 arrived and determined all occupants were self-extricated with one minor injury. The assignment was held to Engine 5301 only to assist with the cleanup and await a tow truck. The SUV struck a parked car, rolling over on its roof.

Looking Back Maple Shade - 2014

Mullica Twp. - 2014

On November 8, 2014, a panic alarm was received by Maple Shade Police reporting a fire in the building at South Jersey Mowers. As the fire continued unchecked, the flames spread to a showroom and vented out the front windows and spread into the shop area. An allout battle took place for an hour before the fire was knocked down.

Collingswood 2014 On October 29, 2014, Task Force 16 was dispatched for a dwelling fire on the unit block of Crestmont Terrace in Collingswood. Crews reported fire extension into the attic and placed multiple handlines in operation to knock down the fire.

Paterson Commercial Fire

Paterson firefighters from the 2nd Battalion made quick work of a fire in a commercial building early in the morning of June 17, 2022.

At just around 0430 companies were dispatched for a possible structure fire in the area of River and East 13th Streets. On arrival, companies encountered heavy fire through the roof of a singlestory commercial building which was occupied by an auto detailing business. Multiple 2-1/2 inch lines were stretched as the trucks opened up and gained entry. Once companies made entry, the fire was knocked down and placed under control in 45 minutes with no injuries.

AC Expressway Truck Fire

On September 3, 2022, units responded to the Atlantic City Expressway for a vehicle fire. On arrival, a fully involved pickup truck was found. The fire was quickly brought under control with no injuries.

On August 31, 2022, the Pleasantville and Ocean City fire departments squared off in a friendly softball game. The game remained close but in the end Ocean City was able to capitalize on Pleasantville for the win. A great time was had by all.

The Bergen County Firemen’s Home Association BBQs

It was a spectacular day for a barbecue! After having to cancel our June Barbecue because of bad weather, we lucked out on our first barbecue on July 10, 2022, when we had the most spectacular sunny and warm day with no humidity. It was the same for our second barbecue on August 21. Clear sunny skies and low 80-degree weather had the residents of the NJ State Firemen’s Home coming out in droves to enjoy good music and delicious food.

The crowd included a large contingent from the Maywood Fire Department to help celebrate the 99th birthday of Maywood’s own George Steger, a guest at the firemen’s home and member of the Bergen County Firemen’s Home Association. Maywood delighted the crowd with their 1938 Ahrens Fox pumper and their Truck 17 aerial.

The menu included hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecue ribs and chicken, corn on the cob, baked beans and chili, macaroni and potato salads and fresh watermelon prepared by the home’s chef. Baked goods were prepared by a member’s wife for dessert and residents and members had a wonderful lunch under the shade trees and tents that were set up on the lawn outside the home.

We were entertained by the Bloomingdale Jazz Big Band during lunch and the Bergen County Pipe and Drum during the break.

Thank you to all the members of the Bergen County Firemen’s Home Association for making this possible and to all the firehouses who contribute each year with donations to make these wonderful events happen.

Fairfield 2-Alarmer

On August 17, 2022, the Fairfield Fire Department responded to Cleary Place in Fairfield for what would become a twoalarm house fire. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire above the front door and through the roof. A dog was also rescued from the home.

Toms River Parking Garage Fire

On July 19, 2022, Toms River Stations 25 and 26 were dispatched to the township’s parking garage on Water Street for a car fire. Fortunately, both houses were staffed for the evening, prompting a quick response. Engine 2671 arrived to heavy smoke showing from the structure, where a car was on fire in the middle of the first floor. A line was stretched and the fire was quickly knocked down by crews from both Engine 71 and Engine 2501. Damage was done to two other vehicles and crews remained on scene for nearly 30 minutes evacuating smoke from the structure and overhauling before the building was reopened.

Fast Knockdown in Brick

On July 22, 2022, Brick Stations 21 and 22 responded to a home on Fire Company, and RIT from Point Pleasant Station 75. The fire was Regent Circle for a fire. Crews arrived to smoke showing from a 1- quickly knocked down by Ladder 2115 and Engine 2231, while crews 1/2 story wood frame and transmitted a second alarm, bringing all continued to open up and check for extension.

1 Civ Fatality, FFs Injured at East Orange Blaze

Just after midnight on July 22, 2022, the East Orange Fire Department responded to an apartment building on Prospect Street for a fire. Crews arrived to heavy fire in a five-story, occupied, multi-dwelling. A second alarm was struck as heavy fire consumed the upper floors of the building. Crews were eventually pulled from the building and a defensive attack was initiated.

Multiple handlines and ladder pipes were put into operation as the fire burned throughout the night and into the next morning as mutual aid companies from surrounding cities were rotated through the scene to assist. These photos were taken nearly seven hours after arrival as deep seated pockets of fire still burned. One civilian fatality and multiple firefighter injuries came from this multi alarm fire.

Trailer Fire Doesn’t Extend On July 1, 2022, the Toms River East Dover Fire Station 28 was dispatched to Garfield Avenue for a trailer fire in close proximity to a residence. A Station 28 officer arrived in his POV and confirmed a fully involved trailer and lawnmower fire with exposure issues to a single-story wood frame. A garden hose was used to cool the home until Engine 2801 arrived to extinguish the fire with their jump line. Seaside Heights Fire On July 12, 2022, while on patrol, Seaside Heights Police Boardwalk units observed a heavy smoke condition coming from the top floor of a building at Fremont and the Boardwalk. Fire crews arrived to a small fire within a kitchen vent system on the top floor. One line, with a few extinguishers, were stretched to address the fire. Command held the response to one engine and a truck once it was determined there was no extension.

EHT Garage Fire

On August 15, 2022, the Egg Harbor City and South Egg Harbor Fire Departments were dispatched for reported smoke coming from a garage. Car 100 arrived and confirmed a working fire. Units

stretched an 1-3/4 inch line and quickly extinguished the fire. The building was ventilated and scene was turned over to investigators.

REGISTRATION NOW OPEN FOR FDSOA 2023 HEALTH AND SAFETY CONFERENCE The Fire Department Safety Officers Association (FDSOA) is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 2023 Health and Safety Conference. The Health and Safety Conference will be held in conjunction with the First Responder Center for Excellence (FRCE) Health and Wellness Symposium January 17-20, 2023, at the Tradewinds Island Grand in St Pete’s Beach, Florida. Pre-conference programs will be held January 15-16.

Registration for the Apparatus Conference, held January 8-10, 2023, at the Gilbert Fire Academy in Gilbert, Arizona, will be available soon.

The FRCE has held successful cancer and behavioral health symposia over the last five years and aims to take a more holistic approach with this year’s event.

Combining the two events provides for a more robust group of speakers and allows participants to attend both conferences for one great price.

There are other significant additions to the Health and Safety Conference in three co-sponsors. Apparatus New and Not-So...

Recently South Wall placed a 2021 Pierce Arrow XT heavy-duty walk-in rescue into service. Jackson Cassville Fire Station 56 purchased a 2015 Arrow Xt 4000-gallon tanker which was scheduled to be delivered to PDVSA in Venezuela. The truck was refurbished and retitled as a 2021 where it now serves as Tanker 5618.

Hot Socket in East Dover On July 15, 2022, East Dover Fire Station 28 was dispatched to a residence on Goose Creek Road for a report of smoke in an attic. Chief 2810 confirmed a smoke condition in the attic and requested the assignment to be filled out, which brought Silverton Stations 29 and 26 RIT to the scene. Ladder 2865 laddered the roof while interior crews checked for the source of the smoke. Ultimately the issue was narrowed down to an overheated outlet, with no fire extension.

Thanks to FFs, Maybe They’ll Make it to Easter

On June 18, 2022, Toms River Station 25 and 26 responded to the Marquee Cinema complex for a mulch fire. Crews arrived to flames showing and stretched a line.

During overhaul members located a handful of newborn bunnies and were able to save a few of them and relocate them to a safe location where animal control was called to respond to check on their well being.

Hackensack Oven Fire

At around 1400 on April 27, 2022, Hackensack Fire Department transmitted a full assignment for a fire on Newman Street. On arrival, E-2 reported heavy smoke in an apartment on the top floor of the three-story OMD. Several lines were stretched into the building as searches were underway. Interior companies reported heavy smoke, which was pushing from the exterior, however they were unable to locate the source. As ventilation started to take effect, the companies discovered a fire in the oven of the fire apartment. As it turned out, the occupant was using logs in her oven which created the smoke condition. The fire was quickly extinguished with no extension. One occupant of the building was evaluated by EMS for smoke inhalation.

Toms River 100th Celebration

On May 14, 2022, the Toms River Fire Department Station 26 held their 100th anniversary parade and celebration. A lights and sirens parade was held through downtown Toms River ending at Huddy Park where multiple vendors and a live band were set up to help celebrate. The majority of the festivities were completed, thankfully, before a heavy rainstorm came through the area.

Trench Rescue On June 30, 2022, Howell Stations 19-2 and 19-3 were dispatched to a home under construction on Carmine Way for a worker trapped in a trench. Upon arrival a special request was made for Asbury Park Confined Space Team and Brick Technical Rescue Team to respond to the scene. Multiple vacuum trucks from Monmouth County Public Works also responded to assist in clearing dirt from the trench. After over two hours in the trench crews removed the victim who was uninjured but was transported as a precaution.

Obituary

Sea Bright’s Michael Hudson Mike Hudson, a “pillar” of ocean rescue in New Jersey and around the world, was being mourned after his sudden passing. He was 53 years old.

He was known for his larger-than-life personality that included being the aquatic stunt safety coordinator for MTV’s “Jackass” team and for Discovery Channel’s Shark Week.

Hudson was a technical rescue contributor for Fire Engineering and had a recurring column in JEMS. He also taught hands-on water rescue seminars at FDIC International and JEMSCon. “Chief Hudson was the pillar of Ocean Rescue, a true waterman,” a post on the Sea Bright Fire Rescue Facebook page reads. “His commitment and efforts lead Sea Bright to be on the forefront of modern-day surf lifesaving. We stand together with our brothers and sisters of Sea Bright Ocean Rescue during this difficult time.”

Hudson, a former Navy Corpsman and military special operations medical instructor, was one of the last of the original City of San Diego paramedics. He spent more than 18 years traveling the country leading rescue teams in Wyoming and in the Colorado Rockies and supervising technical ocean lifeguard programs on both the East and West coasts.

During the winter, he worked the streets of central New Jersey and the Jersey Shore as a mobile intensive care paramedic. In addition to coordinating shark diving safety operations for Shark Week, Hudson did the same for the BBC and National Geographic’s Shark Fest.

He also provided Covid containment services for Guy Fieri’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” and got Fieri to film at a number of Mike’s favorite “dives” down at the Jersey Shore.

Atlantic City Air Show The Atlantic City Air Show was held August 23 to 24, 2022, and attracted approximately 400,000 people. And with a crowd that size, a monumental task of support is needed for police, fire, and EMS.
