Terrorist Attack;

What Would You Do? The 1960s was definitely a tough time for the FDNY and the NYPD. It was a time of civil unrest. Firefighters had to be prepared to handle physical attacks and sabotage while they responded to fires. Firefighters were pelted with rocks and bottles and demonstrators and criminals brought their fights inside the quarters of firehouses such as Engine 94/Ladder 48 in Hunts Point, NY. Chief Vincent Dunn (FDNY retired) wrote about the unrest years ago. “A fire truck, responding to an alarm during a street riot in upper Manhattan is fire bombed; two FDNY firefighters are badly burned. A North Caldwell, New Jersey executive opens a mailed package bomb in the kitchen of his home and is killed. On February 26, 1993 a foreign terrorist bomb explodes in the basement of the World Trade Center, killing six people …” Then there was Oklahoma City, and, then 9/11. Suffolk County Fire Marshal Brett Martinez wrote a terrific article titled “Is There a Role for the Fire Service During

SWAT and Civil Unrest Operations?” See the link below. It covers many ‘what if” scenarios that can or did happen to firefighters. On the morning of January 13, 2015, a three-alarm fire broke out under Penn Station causing subway and LIRR disruptions. The investigation deemed the fire “suspicious.” Does the possibility exist that firefighters were responding to a ‘sleeper’ cell terrorist attack? The Islamic terrorist attacks in France revealed serious breaches and lapses in the French intelligence, surveillance and security systems, according to numerous counterterrorism experts and former government officials. Are you aware of any breaches in our security system? I’ll bet no one in this country will say we are all safe and have nothing to worry about. In Firefighter Nation (2011), FDNY Chief Joe Pfeifer was quoted, “… the FDNY — and the fire service as a whole — have undergone dramatic changes. Terrorism has forced the fire service to become an all-hazards

House Burns in Hillcrest

On December 19, 2014, the Hillcrest Fire Department was toned out for a structure fire on Tauber Terrace. Further updates advised of a room and contents fire. The 2-1/2 story home had heavy fire showing from the first floor, rapidly extending to the second. As the first engine arrived, the fire had advanced to most of the first floor, some of the second and extended into the attic space. Several lines were

stretched and the fire was eventually extinguished. Firefighters from Hillcrest were aided by Spring Valley, Monsey and Thiells. One firefighter in the initial attack suffered minor burns. The cause of the fire was believed to be a lit candle. The family of five was able to escape unharmed. - Fire News photos by Kenny Flynn

Suspicious Fire, Vandalism in Albany

Fire and police officials are trying to determine if a working house fire and slashed tires on two vans owned by Albany’s Refugee and Immigrant Support Services of Emmaus (RISSE) building on West Lawrence Street are connected. The fire was reported early on December 2, 2014. The right side of the building received the most serious fire damage, Deputy Fire Chief Joseph Toomey said. New York State Fire Investigators were on the scene assisting Albany police and fire investigators. The former two-family-home serves as an office and instructional space for the church’s programs to help immigrants and refugees adjust to life in this country, according to Craig Middleton, the Sexton at the Emmaus United Methodist Church. “We serve people from about 14 different countries here and help them with English, how to get medical help, living arrangements and other everyday needs,” Middleton said. - Fire News photo by Tom Heffernan

Schuyler Hts. FF Loses Home On December 18, 2014, David Plouff, a life member with Schuyler Heights Fire Department, was finishing his shift with Colonie EMS when a call came in that his home was on fire. Units from Schuyler Heights, with assists from Menands, West Albany, Boght, Latham and the Watervliet Arsenal fought the fire for over three hours. Upon arrival, flames, which had originated in the basement, were shooting through the roof of the twostory wood frame home. The home, which was set far back off the street, made access hard for the departments. The location of the property also made movement hard for the firefighters who at times had to wade through water eight inches or more deep. The firefighters were unable to make an interior attack at first, as the second floor had partially collapsed. Watervliet Arsenal assisted by using their aerial deck gun. The only injury happened to Plouff who upon arrival slipped and dislocated his shoulder. He was taken to a local hospital and released. Plouff lost everything he owned including EMS memorabilia he had been collecting since 1975, which he was going to donate to an EMS museum in Massachusetts. Within hours, the emergency services community pulled together and started fundraising to help him rebuild his home and life, raising over $40,000 in 24 hours. - Fire News photos by Lori Washburn and Martin Miller

Showing What Brotherhood Means Two of the Town of Colonie firefighters, Chief Meghan Sammons and past-Chief Jason Wheatley, are struggling with severe medical problems which allowed the community, and firefighters from over five counties to join together and show support for them and to aid them in recovery. Chief Sammons, of the Midway Fire Department, the first female chief in the Town of Colonie, is suffering from Stage 4 colon cancer. Her department threw a huge fundraising event, which consisted of selling t-shirts, bracelets, allowing people to dunk firefighters from various town departments in the dunk tank, a firefighter Zumba class, as well as a petting zoo. The event, held on September 20, 2014, raised over $15,000 to help defray medical and transportation costs. On October 4, 2014, the Verdoy Fire Department held a fundraiser for past-Chief Wheatley who was injured in August while responding to a fire. Jason received a severe head injury when he fell against the engine. He is responding well to treatment in Boston and the department and his family look forward to seeing continued improvement as the days and weeks go by. Even though it was a rainy day, hundreds of people showed up to the Shaker Road-Loudonville pavlion to show their support for the Wheatley Strong project. Thousands of dollars in donations were raffled off and firefighters and chiefs took turns sitting in frigid water of the dunk booth to help raise funds and morale. Both departments continue to support their chiefs and their families with ongoing fundraising events. - Fire News photos by Lori Washburn

Queens Box 22-7889 Remembered

On December 20, 2014, a ceremony was held at the quarters of the Corona Tigers, Engine 289/Tower Ladder 138. The ceremony commemorated the tenth anniversary of a tragic fire that occurred in Jackson Heights on December 15, 2005. On hand to say thank you to the firefighters for saving their lives was Naomi Siguencia, Alexandra Sandoval and Carolina Sandoval, along with the members of Rescue Company 4. Unfortunately, the three children lost their parents in the terrible fire. For the past 10 years, the Corona

Tigers never forgot the girls who survived the blaze. They have been there for the children as they grew into the beautiful young adults that they are today. To read about the fire and the heroic acts by numerous firefighters who responded to the call, download the 2005 FDNY Medal Day book at www.nyc.gov/html/fdny/html/ medal_day/2005/fire/pdf/medal_day_05.pdf. - Fire News photos by Dennis Whittam
