Terrorist Attack; What Would You Do? The 1960s was definitely a tough time for the FDNY and the NYPD. It was a time of civil unrest. Firefighters had to be prepared to handle physical attacks and sabotage while they responded to fires. Firefighters were pelted with rocks and bottles and demonstrators and criminals brought their fights inside the quarters of firehouses such as Engine 94/Ladder 48 in Hunts Point, NY. Chief Vincent Dunn (FDNY retired) wrote about the unrest years ago. “A fire truck, responding to an alarm during a street riot in upper Manhattan is fire bombed; two FDNY firefighters are badly burned. A North Caldwell, N. J. executive opens a mailed package bomb in the kitchen of his home and is killed by exploding shrapnel. On February 26,1993 a foreign terrorist bomb explodes in the basement of the World Trade Center, killing six people, injuring another 1,000 and destroying a half billion dollars' worth of property…” Then there was Oklahoma City, and, then 9/11. Suffolk County Fire Marshal Brett Martinez wrote a terrific article titles “Is There a Role for the Fire Service During SWAT and Civil Unrest Operations?” The link to the article is below. It covers many ‘what if” scenarios that can or did happen throughout history that involved firefighters. On the morning of January 13, 2015, the news covered two major fires. A threealarm fire broke out under Penn Station early this morning, causing subway and LIRR disruptions. The investigation deemed the fire “suspicious.” In Washington, DC, the headline read, “Subway System Remains Hobbled After Fatal Subway Fire.” Does the possibility exist that firefighters were responding to a ‘sleeper’ cell terrorist attack? The Islamic terrorist attacks in France revealed serious breaches and lapses in the French intelligence, surveillance and security systems, according to numerous counterterrorism experts and former government officials. Are you aware of any breaches in our security system? I’ll bet no one in this country will say we are all safe and have nothing to worry about. In Firefighter Nation (2011), FDNY Chief Joe Pfeifer was quoted, “… the FDNY — and the fire service as a whole — have undergone dramatic changes. Terrorism has forced the fire service to become an all-hazards response industry. As a result, training has undergone a major overhaul as well, and now includes drills, education and exercises that hone disaster preparedness skills and readiness.” As first responders, you must view all calls as a possible threat to your safety. It is imperative that you read the links below and discuss what you would do if some of the attacks of the past happened to you. You must plan and train for a worst case scenario. REDUCE LINE-OF-DUTY DEATHS
The leadership of Maryland’s Kentland Volunteer Fire Department believes aggressive firefighting and firefighter safety go hand-in-hand. That'’s why they’ve joined the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) in a video launching a new campaign to further reduce the number of firefighters who die in the line-of-duty. Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department Chief Marc Bashoor calls Kentland a leader in helping make sure that, “aggressive”and “safety” don’t become mutually exclusive terms. There is little doubt the most important element in firefighter safety is you, the firefighter. The contributing factors in the majority of firefighter deaths are the health of the firefighter, and the actions taken while responding to and returning from the scene of an incident. Make it your New Year’s resolution to take personal responsibility in creating a safer environment for all firefighters. Join the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation in a new goal of vastly reducing the number of firefighters injured, and to lower the number of line-of-duty deaths each year to below 50. This new goal was inspired by the work of firefighters and fire service leaders at the Tampa 2 Firefighter Life Safety Summit in March, 2014. The just-released Summit Report reaffirms that the 16 Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives (established at the first Summit in 2004) are still valid and should remain the blueprint for reducing firefighter injuries and deaths. In this video, Kentland’s officers and other fire service leaders talk about many of the key points addressed at the Tampa 2 Summit. These include not only personal responsibility, but accurate risk assessment, and the important role the company officer plays in safety and accountability. 3-Alarmer in Elmwood
On December 1, 2014, Elmwood Park Fire Department responded to 16th Avenue for a reported house fire. On arrival companies encountered a fully involved two-story, frame, private dwelling with all occupants out. A second alarm was requested followed quickly by a third as companies knocked down the heavy fire from the exterior before entering for an interior attack. Conditions deteriorated and companies reported an interior collapse forcing command to pull all members. After another brief exterior attack most visible fire was knocked down and companies made their way back inside to open up and extinguish remaining fire. Weymouth Twp. Pre-Fab Fire The Dorothy Fire and Rescue, Mays Landing Volunteer Fire Company and the Milmay Volunteer Fire Company responded on December 14, 2014, to Hickory Lane in the Oaks of Weymouth housing development for a structure fire after the homeowner discovered a fire. Mays Landing Chief John Saurwald arrived to a fire in the sun room of a one-story prefab home, with Dorothy Engine 1271 arriving immediately after with command being established by Assistant Chief Jesse Hand, F12701. Quick Work at Scullville Fire The volunteer fire companies of Scullville and Bargaintown responded to Jerome Avenue on December 12, 2014, for a report of a structure fire. Scullville Chief Michael Fiedor arrived and reported heavy smoke showing from the A, B and D, sides of a two-story, wood frame, single-family dwelling. Mutual aid brought an RIT response from the City of Somers Point. Command requested a second alarm, bringing the remainder of the Egg Harbor Township Fire Department, Cardiff, Farmington, and West Atlantic City along with one water tender from the Mays Landing. 2-for-1 in Cliffside Park On November 18, 2014, Cliffside Park Fire Department was dispatched to a reported working fire at a four-story apartment complex construction site on Walker Street. Arriving units encountered heavy fire on the top floor. With conditions deteriorating and a severe ember problem a second alarm was requested. The top two floors became fully involved, creating a collapse problem, and along with exposure issues and low water pressure, command requested a third alarm. North Hudson Squad 7
staged on Palisades Avenue and reported they had a fire there with fire in the cockloft as well as the top floor of a three-story frame. The fire had a good headway with heavy fire in the cockloft and all firefighters were withdrawn from the building. Conditions rapidly deteriorated. Additional companies made their way to this fire from Walker Street, many covered in ice from fighting that fire. Eventually the entire top floor and cockloft became fully involved.
During the fire heavy smoke would be driven to the ground by the winds creating zero visibility at times. A salt truck was requested from the DPW due to icing conditions from water spray. Multiple towns from Bergen County as well as North Hudson Units were called into the scene or provided cover for Cliffside Park. Numerous people were left homeless but only a handfull of minor injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was unknown. - Fire News photos by Peter Danzo

2-Alarmer in McKeetown
The volunteer fire companies of Cardiff and Bargaintown responded to Glenn Avenue in the McKeetown section of the township on October 11, 2014, for a structure fire. Assistant Cardiff Chief Steven Sear declared a working fire, which automatically brings an RIT unit from the City of Northfield and an ambulance from the Egg Harbor Township Ambulance Squad. Command requested a second alarm, bringing an engine from the Farmington and a ladder from West Atlantic City. The fire involved two vehicles in the attached garage of a two-story, wood frame, singlefamily dwelling with a basement. Cardiff Engine 1514 was first in with their crew stretching a preconnect in through the front door and confining the fire to the garage. Heavy smoke consumed the structure, causing heavy damage. Bargaintown Engine 1522 layed a LDH from a hydrant 400 feet away and supplied the scene, feeding two engines and the Cardiff tower. Cardiff, Bargaintown Quick Knockdown
Recently, the volunteer fire companies of Cardiff and Bargaintown responded to Spruce Avenue for a structure fire. Cardiff Assistant Chief Steven Sear arrived and established command and had firstdue Cardiff Engine 1516 take up a position on the A side of a onestory block building with fire showing from the front and rear.
Engine 1516 led off with two preconnects while their second-due Engine 1512 laid a five-inch supply line to a nearby hydrant. Assisted by Bargaintown firefighters, the fire was quickly knocked down and overhauled. - Fire News photo by Ken Badger
Good Work at Netcong Apartment Fire
On November 30, 2014, the Netcong Fire Company was dispatched to Netcong Heights Apartments Building 23 for a report of a fire in a bedroom. First-in crews found heavy smoke coming from the windows of the apartment and stretched a 1-3/4 inch line. Command called for a second alarm as crews attacked the fire and had it knocked down within five minutes and vented the structure. The
fire was confined to a mattress and some furniture in the room. There were no injuries and mutual aid was provided by Budd Lake, Stanhope, Flanders, Bryam, Mt. Arlington and Roxbury on scene as well as station coverage; Stanhope/Netcong First Aid provided rehab and EMS coverage. - Fire News photo by Kevin J. Maloney

Close Call in Paterson 4-Alarmer
Early on December 18, 2014, the Paterson Fire Department responded to a fire on 4th Avenue and East 17th Street. On arrival E-5 reported a twostory frame heavily involved with extension into exposure B, a vacant three-story frame. Companies immediately initiated an interior attack and as heavy fire extended into the cockloft of exposure B a second alarm was requested. About 20 minutes into the fire, a Mayday was sounded for a firefighter trapped on the second floor due to deteriorating conditions; he was quickly evacuated via ground ladder with no injuries and all members were ordered out. A third alarm was requested as companies went into defensive operations on the original fire building, followed by a fourth. The original fire building was destroyed and the exposure suffered heavy damage but firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to any additional buildings. - Fire News photos by Peter Danzo

Cardiff Structure Fire
The volunteer fire companies of Cardiff and Bargaintown responded to 4th Avenue in the Cardiff section on December 22, 2014, for a report of a structure fire. Cardiff Lt. Gil Zonge arrived and established command and initiated defensive operations. The fire involved an aluminum carport that was enclosed with an addition constructed onto the side, and contained car parts and machinery, which were on
fire along with numerous motor vehicles inside and outside also on fire. Command requested a second alarm and also requested that Atlantic County Emergency Management respond with Purple K to extinguish the magnesium that was discovered. A lengthy overhaul ensued. - Fire News photos by Ken Badger

Blackwood Vehicle Fire On October 14, 2014, Station 84 was dispatched to the Quail Ridge Apartments for a vehicle fire. Chief Vannoni (8401) arrived to find a vehicle fully involved. Lumber Yard Fire in Richland Richland and East Vineland with Squad 12-9 from Buena Vista Township responded on November 23, 2014, to Tuckahoe Road for a building fire. Richland Chief Tony Monfredo, Jr., arrived and established command and reported a fully involved one-story workshop with an attached lean-to. East Vineland firefighters responded immediately. An LDH supply line was stretched for the East Vineland water tender. Two lines were stretched, and upon the arrival of the Richland engine, their crew pulled a line to the B/C side of the structure. An extensive overhaul was performed due to a large amount of lumber stored in the structure. Car Fire at Home
On November 14, 2014 the Bargaintown Volunteer Fire Company, was dispatched for a car fire on Stony Creek Drive. The female driver of the vehicle arrived home and parked the vehicle in her garage and heard an alarm sounding in the vehicle. She exited the vehicle and went into the home and notified her husband. When she went
back into the garage, smoke was coming from under the hood and she backed the vehicle out of the garage and then called 911. On December 29, 2015, Mt. Olive Dispatchers received several calls for a car on fire in the driveway of a River Road home. The volunteer fire companies of Scullville and Bargaintown, responded to Mystic Drive on November 22, 2014, in the Scullville section for a report of a structure fire. Bargaintown firefighters, who were already on the air for a special detail, responded immediately. Car 1520, under the command of Safety Officer Ken Badger, arrived and informed dispatch the fire appeared to be out. Paterson 3-Alarmer Guts Houses Leaves 8 Homeless
On December 18, 2014, while the members of the Paterson Fire Department were operating at a four-alarm fire, another blaze was reported on 5th Avenue. An off-duty deputy chief reported a working fire on the first floor of an unoccupied 2-1/2 story frame dwelling under renovation. Mutual aid companies, which were responding into the city for cover, were directed to this fire. Deputy Chief Brian McDermott arrived and took command as Hawthorne Tower 2 arrived, followed by a ladder tower from Wayne, West Paterson E-2 and Clifton E-2. Companies encountered two bad hydrants, which delayed the water supply and the original fire
building and the exposure became fully involved. A moderate wind blew large fire brands throughout the neighborhood, but no other structures became involved. The fire eventually went to three alarms and companies placed three ladder pipes, two deck guns and at least three handlines into operation. The fire took several hours to be placed under control, and both buildings were destroyed with at least eight people left homeless. This fire occurred directly across the street from another three-alarm fire, which occurred in an unoccupied dwelling two nights prior. - Fire News photo by Peter Danzo

3 Injured in Hackensack MVA
On January 7, 2015, Hackensack Engine 1, Rescue 1, D/C 1 and Hackensack UMC BLS responded to Hudson and Kansas Streets for a two-car MVA involving a mini bus. Car Fire on Black Horse Pike
The volunteer fire companies of Cologne and Mays Landing were dispatched on December 17, 2014, to the eastbound Black Horse Pike between Cologne Avenue and Wal-Mart for a report of a vehicle fire. Blackwood MVA On January 2, 2015, the Blackwood Fire Company Rescue 84, Gloucester Township EMS and Virtua medics were dispatched to Church Street and the Black Horse Pike for an MVA with entrapment. Chief Vannoni (8401) arrived to find an SUV under a box truck with negative entrapment. Extrication in Scullville The Scullville Volunteer Fire Company responded to Robert Best Road south of Zion Road on December 28, 2014, for an MVA with entrapment. Scullville Chief Michael Fiedor arrived and established command for a single-vehicle accident off the road and into the woods with one person trapped; a second occupant self extricated. The driver’s side door was removed by Scullville Rescue 1537 firefighters and EMTs. Lauderdale Car Fire The volunteer fire companies of Cologne and Laureldale were dispatched on November 21, 2014, to Route 322 (Black Horse Pike) westbound, west of Wrangleboro Road for the report of a motor vehicle fire. Car 1830, Laureldale Chief Chris Tilley, arrived and established command and reported the van fully involved. Camden County MVA
On November 6, 2014, Rescue 84, BLS 807 and Medic 46 were dispatched to the Shoprite on Blackwood Clementon Road for an MVA. As units were en route, Gloucester Town Police Department amended the location to College Drive in the area of Broadacres Drive for a vehicle into a pole with a patient on the roadway with live wires on top of them. Rescue 84 requested the company retoned and Rescue and Engine 82 (Chews Landing) were added for manpower. Once power was secured, crews from Rescue 84, Engine 842, and Rescue 82 assisted EMS with patient care and removal. The person was transported to Cooper Hospital. - Fire News photo by Michael Breyer

Fatality in Turnpike Truck Crash On November 19, 2014, three tractor-trailers were involved in a rear-end collision in Cranbury, with the third of the vehicles hitting a guardrail and bursting into flames. Camden County MVA On October 30, 2014, members monitoring police and fire radio heard BLS units being dispatched to Highland High School for a multi-car accident. Chief Vannoni (8401) responded and found a twocar accident on Blackwood Clementon Road with one patient heavily trapped. Rescue 84 responded with six members and removed the side of the SUV. Out with the old, in with the new: The City of Northfield Volunteer Fire Department recently took delivery of a 2014 Pierce engine. On December 21, 2014, the members stripped the old Engine 65, a 1983 model, and put the new engine into service. Birthday Surprise for Dorothy Chief Gibney
Friends, firefighters from the Dorothy Fire and Rescue Company, along with members of the New Jersey Forest Fire Service surprised Dorothy Fire and Rescue Chief Robert Gibney on November 10, 2014, with a belated birthday celebration before the start of their business meeting. Chief Gibney kept his birthday, in August, a secret. Santa Claus made a stop at the City of Northfield Volunteer Fire Department in Atlantic County on December 5, 2014. Along with listening to the children’s wish lists, Santa and Mrs. Claus were later taken around the city and visited several homes to distribute gifts. Shop with a Cop Program The Egg Harbor Township Fire Department in Atlantic County assisted the Atlantic County PBA with their “2014 Shop with a Cop� program that is sponsored by Wal-Mart. The program is designed for special needs children to partner with policemen to shop at their local Wal-Mart where each child is donated $100 to shop for Christmas presents. Collingswood Fire Prevention Night On October 17, 2014, the Collingswood Fire Department held Fire Prevention/Public Safety night at the firehouse. Hackensack Plays Santa
On December 16, 2014, members of the Hackensack Fire Department IAFF locals 2081 and 3172 purchased gifts for 50 children, ranging in age from three months to 17 years old. They are all part of the Youth Consultation Services (YCS) of Bergen County which is located in Hackensack. Most, if not all, these kids do not have parents, or have been taken away from their parents.
Members of the department wanted the children to be in the holiday spirit and were glad to assist YCS with this toy drive. “Without our drive, these kids would not have received presents for Christmas,” said John Taylor vice president of IAFF local 3172. “The look on the kid’s faces when they received their gifts [was] priceless.” - Fire News photos by Justin Dervyanik

Wayside Foam Drills The Wayside Fire Company travelled up to the Middlesex County Fire Academy on October 18, 2014, for a live burn drill using foam. Members split up into crews to practice on applying foam onto fires which contained flammable liquids, starting off with oil drums which eventually led up to a full sized flammable liquid transport tanker. Remembering the Fallen As part of the Wallington Fire Department’s 13th Annual Holiday Parade, five members were honored. During this year's parade, tribute was paid to three members of the Wallington Fire Department, as well as well as two pillars of their own communities from Wood-Ridge and Mahwah. From Wallington
ex-Chief Greg Barnas who died in the line of duty fighting a fire in town, along with his son John Barnas who died of pneumonia, as well as past member Russell Gavlak, were all honored. In addition to the members of the Wallington Fire Department, ex-Fire Chief Thomas “Skip” Bischoff of Wood-Ridge and ex-Chief Patrick

Fair Haven Fire Company Celebrates 110 Years
On June 7, 2014, the Fair Haven Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 celebrated 110 years of service to the borough of Fair Haven. The day consisted of a photo shoot consisting of the company and apparatus including varies separate organizations within the company including First Aid, Fire Police, Water Rescue, Auxiliary, Future Firefighters, and varies other groups. Following was a nice lunch provided by both Fairwind’s Deli and Brennan’s Deli.
