A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words, But…
ANNOUNCEMENTS PLEASANT PLAINS VFD 32ND ANNUAL FAMILY CHICKEN BBQ On July 20, 2013 (rain or shine), the Pleasant Plains Volunteer Fire department will kickoff it’s wildly popular family barbecue event. It will be held at the Pleasant Plains Firehouse, 40 Clayton Avenue, Toms River from 1200 to 1900. For $9 for adults and children (under 12), $6, you’ll get a half chicken, corn on the cob, salad, rolls, watermelon, and two drinks (extra beer and soda may be purchased by the glass, pitcher or mug). The last serving of chicken will be at 1800. Seating is inside and outside in tents. There will be music, raffles (a Harley Davidson will be raffled off), door prizes, food basket raffle, snow cones, ice cream, popcorn, pretzels and more with rides including a Moon Bounce, fire truck rides and pony rides, as well as balloons, face painting and a children’s ID program. SURF CITY VFC 3RD BEACH BLAST BLOCK PARTY
Thank you to everyone who called or e-mailed about my July editorial. I had some great discussions that made me think that our editorials are generating positive thoughts. Fire News is dedicated to promoting the fire service and honoring you, the first responder. One of the goals of our newspaper is for our subjects to be proud of who they are and of what they do exemplified by the spectacular photos that are taken by our national array of photographers. The hard part is choosing a photograph that doesn't leave Fire News open to criticism by its always vigilant and eagle-eyed readers. I can't tell you how many photographs we turn away because they are politically incorrect, show scenes that are too horrific for public viewing or simply don't make the cut for a number of other reasons. When you look at our photographs, we hope they make you feel — or at least replicate the feeling — of being on a call. The photographs tell a story, but as with all stories there can be different variations and interpretations about the event. Does the photo show a glass half empty or a glass half full? This is where “interpretation” comes into play and may distort exactly what happened when the image was taken. Did the firefighter forget to wear gloves? Or was the photo taken just before the gloves were being but on? Is the firefighter too close to the flame or is the depth of field in the image creating the illusion of proximity. Only the firefighter knows for sure what he or she did at the time the photo was taken. Rest assured there is not a chance we are advocating not wearing the appropriate equipment at any time. Last month, I viewed 1716 photographs for our six nationallyread editions. We choose photographs that we consider best depicts what happened at the call described. When Fire News arrives in your hands we know the photos are carefully studied by you, our readers. Occasionally, the firefighters may appear to be out of gear and not be wearing all their personal protective equipment and, yes, they may be out of gear. It is up to all responders to remember that the world is watching what you do. If a photograph is worth a thousand words, please let them be kind words. Wear all of your personal protective equipment so that you can go home without an injury. - Dennis
The Surf City Volunteer Fire Company will hold its 3rd Annual Beach Blast Block Party on Saturday, August 10, 2013, from 1600 to 2200 at 713 Long Beach Boulevard in Surf City. The party includes live music, food and beer, Children's activities, and a silent auction featuring sports memorabilia.
Where Are Your Department’s Photos?
The New Jersey Historical Commission awarded the Seaside heights Volunteer Fire Company Museum a mini-grant of $4494 for a newspaper microfilming and digitization project. Backstage Library Works of Bethlehem, PA will microfilm and digitize nearly 3000 pages of the Ocean County Review and other newspapers. The Review was published from 1913 until the late 1990s.
We would like to remind our readers that we are always happy to receive photos and stories from departments who have never been in our paper. Feel free to e-mail your photos to nj@fire news.com. We ask that any photo you do send be high resolution (300 dpi or better) and that you do not retouch, crop, alter or reduce your photos in size when you e-mail them to us. Please send two to four photos per incident. Also, include a brief write-up of the incident, event, or family news, which includes basic "who, what, when, and where information." PARKERTOWN VOLUNTEER FIRE COMPANY TO HOST A FUNDRAISER On Saturday, August 17, 2013, the Parkertown Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting New Jersey's Ultimate Firefighter Rescue Challenge at the Pinelands High School in Little Egg Harbor, to raise money to help the families of New Jersey first responders who suffered devastating losses from Superstorm Sandy. The Ultimate Firefighter Foundation was founded by members of the Parkertown Volunteer Fire Company (PVFC) - District 3, Station 70, of Little Egg Harbor. “Now it’s time to support those responders who lost so much while helping so many,” said Ultimate Firefighter Foundation President, Alfred Chesney The NJUFRC is a state-wide competition and the event will have several different activities. The main attraction will be the Ultimate Firefighter Rescue Challenge. This consists of an obstacle course for individual or teams of firefighters. The second attraction will be a vendor fair and live music. Finally there will be an apparatus show for those fire departments that wish to come and display their apparatus. “This is a great cause and a great event, and I'm proud that my department is bringing it together,” said Parkertown Fire Company Chief, Frank Runza. SEASIDE HEIGHTS VFC GETS GRANT TO PRESERVE HISTORY
MOTORCYCLE PARAMEDICS American EMTs — especially those in understaffed and/or widespread coverage areas — might be interested in what Australian paramedic Jason Learmouth does. He's half way through a three-year trial in the city of Melbourne to determine the feasibility of paramedics riding motorcycles. According to the story (which can be found at www.gizmag.com/melbourne-motorcycle-paramedic-ambulance/28093/pictures), he's not the first of his kind, either. Sydney has had motorcycle paramedics for 15 years, while Adelaide started in 2011.

ANNOUNCEMENTS BEAVER BROOK REGIONAL FIRE ALLIANCE SCORES FEMA GRANT The Runnemede Fire Department has been awarded a grant that is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. This grant was hosted by the Borough of Runnemede Fire Department and was part of a regional project, supported regionally by the Borough of Barrington, Bellmawr, Haddon Heights and Runnemede fire departments. Through the Assistance to Firefighter Grant Program the four municipal fire departments will receive $546,354.00 in operations and safety funds. These funds will be used to purchase 109 self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), and four Rapid Intervention Pack Finder Devices used to rescue a downed firefighter if they become lost or trapped. The new SCBAs will replace apparatus that are nearing the end of their useful life and upgrade to new breathing apparatus which meets the most recent standards, and assure that we are providing our firefighters with the best available safety equipment. Through the AFG program, grants are awarded to firefighters, emergency response personnel and first responders throughout the country to enhance response capabilities and to more effectively protect the health and safety of the public, with respect to fire and other hazards. This award is another step taken by the four fire departments that operate as the Beaver Brook Regional Fire Alliance. This alliance was formed through municipal resolution of the four communities to reduce duplication of equipment, standardize its equipment purchases, training, and operations guideline. This grant will save the taxpayers in their communities as this equipment would have been replaced within the next year via capital improvements. The alliance continues to improve the delivery of emergency services within their communities. 11 Displaced in Wharton Fire
The Wharton Fire Department was dispatched to a reported house fire on East Dewey Avenue, at approximately 0240 on June 17, 2103. The fist arriving units were met by heavy fire conditions from the 2-1/2 story, two-family home. Mutual aid was called from Mine Hill, Dover and Picatinny Arsenal. The fire took over an hour to bring under control. All of the residents escaped the building when they were awakened by the fire alarm. EMS crews from St Clair’s Hospital and Mine Hill First Aid Squad were on scene but there were no reported injuries; the Red Cross was called to assist with temporary housing for 11 displaced residents. - Fire News photos by Thomas Finnegan

Lacey Three-Alarm Recently, Lacey units from Station 61, 60, 17 and 59 responded to a two-alarm blaze (the fire would eventually go to threealarms) on Arbor Ridge Drive. No Fire at Fire Road Call The Farmington Volunteer Fire Company #4 was dispatched June 8, 2013, to Fire Road for a report of an explosion with fuel actively leaking from a storage tank. Farmington Chief Len Tilley arrived to find a liquid oxygen tank spewing vapors, and upon an investigation by a Farmington firefighter who was an employee of the company, it was discovered the tank was overfilled and the Oring had blown off. A representative of the company arrived and it was decided to let the vapors evaporate as they posed no harm to the environment or the immediate surroundings. Car Fire in Budd Lake
On May 24, 2013, late afternoon Budd Lake’s Engine 59, Squad 56, EMS 61 and Car 51 responded to Route 46 at the entrance to Route 80 for a car fire. Upon arrival of Car 51 the car was 75 percent involved. As Engine 59 pulled up they used the bumper line, attacked the fire and knocked it down within 15 minutes. Garbage Truck Fire in East Brunswick
On June 25, 2013, an early morning garbage truck fire brought East Brunswick Fire District #3 and District #1 to the township recycling center. With the contents of the truck fully involved the driver averted losing the truck by ejecting the burning contents and giving firefighters full access to the debris. After the fire was knocked down, Dist. #3 and Dist. #1 members remained on scene going through the burnt material layer by layer, extinguishing any hotspots. Quick Stop at Buena Vista Blaze
The volunteer fire stations of Newtonville and Collings Lake from Buena Vista Township were dispatched to Meyner Lane on June 9, 2013, for a report of a structure fire. Car 12-600 arrived to find heavy fire showing from the rear of a one-story, single-family, L-shaped dwelling. Firefighters arrived quickly and made a good stop on the fire, and the BVT Fire Marshall was investigating the cause. The family’s pet German shepherd was rescued from the fire and was administered first aid by members of BVT Squad 12-9, as was one firefighter who suffered a cut hand. Squad 12-9 also administered O2 and first aid to a female resident of the home. Responding: Newtonville, Collings Lake, Minotola, Landisville, Buena EMS, N.J. Back to School in E. Brunswick On June 19, 2013, at 1815, East Brunswick Fire District #1 was dispatched to Hammarskjold Middle School for a report of a heavy smoke condition coming from one of the classrooms. The custodian who discovered the smoke activated the fire alarm and the building was evacuated in orderly fashion. The source of the smoke was quickly located by responders. A plug in air freshener had apparently ran out of scented oil and the unit overheated and began to melt. Dist. #1 members removed the plug-in device then vented the smoke. Ferry, Frag, Woods in N. Cape May A five-acre frag and woods fire burned out of control for two hours near the ferry terminal in North Cape May on Saturday April 27, 2013. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service C1, C1a and C41 did a ground attack while Charlie 1 helped with an air tanker attack, dropping three times to help stop the fire from spreading to the terminal. The NJFFS also used a plow to surround the wooded area to prevent it from spreading. Town Bank Volunteer Fire also assisted the forestry service to contain the fire. Hot Grill Sparks Fire The City of Northfield Volunteer Fire Department responded on June 1, 2013, to the 300 block of Davis Avenue for a reported structure fire. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke showing from a detached garage. After a quick knockdown, an investigation revealed the homeowner’s improperly stored barbecue grill ignited combustibles stored in the garage. Two-Alarm in Camden On May 31, 2013, a dwelling fire was reported in Camden City on Decatur Sreet. First arriving units encountered heavy fire conditions throughout the two-story end-of-the-row dwelling. Crews set up for master stream operations and command struck a second alarm. Cardiff MVA The Cardiff Volunteer Fire Company responded on June 30, 2013, to Route 40-322, the Black Horse Pike, for a report of wires arcing in front of Story Book Land. Chief of Department William Danz, Jr., responded and advised all responding units the incident was actually a motor vehicle crash, with a pole down and a vehicle on its roof. Somers Point Two-Car MVA The City of Somers Point Volunteer Fire Department responded to the intersection of Laurel Drive and New Road (US Route 9) for a two-car motor vehicle crash on May 30, 2013. Firefighters extricated one civilian from a vehicle who was transported by Shore Medical Center BLS to Shore Medical Center in Somers Point. Truck vs. Truck MVA in Little Falls At 0530 on July 2, 2013, Little Falls crews responded to an MVA at Route 46 east and Notch Road. An 18-wheeler rear ended a box truck and the tractor-trailer driver was heavily entrapped. Haledon MVA On June 23, 2013, at approximately 1300, the Haledon Fire Department responded to Belmont Avenue and Barbour Street for a reported overturned auto with entrapment. Companies arrived to find a two-door passenger car on top of a parked car. Mutual aid rescue was requested from the Paterson Fire Department. Two Injured in Somers Pt. MVA
The City of Somers Point Fire Department responded to the intersection of Groveland Avenue and Shore Road on June 23, 2013, for a two-car motor vehicle crash. Firefighters arrived to find both vehicles off the road and in a parking lot from the force of the impact. Car into Pep Boys Sign Brings Out Dist # 2
At 1920 on June 24, 2013, East Brunswick Fire District # 2 was dispatched for a car into a utility pole with possible entrapment on State Highway Rt 18 South. Arriving first on scene Chief William Johnson came upon a Toyota Camry that had run off the road, struck several road signs then drove through a utility pole before coming to rest into a roadside Pep Boys sign. There was no driver entrapment. The driver was removed from the car and taken to Robert Wood Hospital in critical condition. Sleeping Driver Survives Rollover At 0600 on June 8, 2013, a Camry traveling west bound on Old Stage Road with the driver asleep at the wheel bounced off the curb then struck a tree and came to rest on its roof after rolling across the hood of an on coming car. East Brunswick Fire District #1 was dispatched with the possibility of entrapment. Upon arrival of Dist. #1 both drivers were out of their cars. Fatality at East Brunswick MVA
East Brunswick Fire District #1 and East Brunswick Volunteer Rescue Squad responded to a call of a car into a building on Route 18 North on May 4, 2013. The driver of the car reportedly suffered a heart attack while driving through the intersection of Route 18 and Rues Lane. The car continued straight into the paint store on the corner of the north bound lane. No one in the store was hurt. The driver was removed to a near by hospital with his condition unknown. Two-Car MVC in AC
The Atlantic City Fire Department responded on June 1, 2013, to the intersection of Tennessee and Adriatic Avenues for a report of a motor vehicle crash with injuries. Firefighters arrived on scene to find a two-car MVC with one vehicle on its side. Firefighters and EMTs from Exceptional Medical Transport treated and removed the people and they were transported to ARMC City Campus by Exceptional Ambulance. AC Water Tender TF Drill
The Atlantic County Water Tender Task Force held its semi-annual drill on June 23, 2013, at the Atlantic County 4-H Fairgrounds in South Egg Harbor in conjunction with the Atlantic County Foam Task Force. Multi-Scenario Water Rescue Drill in Fair Haven
The Fair Haven Fire Department conducted a boat explosion/water search and rescue drill on June 17, 2013. The scenario included a simulated boat explosion and two “victims� who had drifted away from the scene with multiple traumatic injuries. Foam was deployed to simulate protecting exposures, controlling a fuel spill, and extinguishing the boat fire. The Fair Haven First Aid Squad and Marine Unit were charged with water rescue and patient care. The scenario ended with a simulated Mayday situation involving a firefighter who had fallen off the dock in full turnout gear, requiring firefighters to shed their gear, enter the water, and rescue their colleague. - Fire News photos by Tom Brenner

E. Pennsauken Celebrates 100 Years
On June 1, 2013, the East Pennsauken Volunteer Fire Association, No. 1 celebrated 100 years of service. The streets were closed around the firehouse as fire service members, family and friends lined the street for a short ceremony. The Pennsauken Fire Department Color Guard and the Camden County Emerald Society Pipes and Drums led the way followed by all members of East Pennsauken, past and present. A short ceremony was held followed by a unveiling of the 100 years of service cornerstone on the firehouse. Howell First Aid Hosts MCI Drill On May 19, 2013, the Howell Township First Aid and Rescue Squad #1 hosted an MCI Drill. A donated commuter bus was rolled over and 15 “patients� were placed inside. Emergency responders from the Howell Township First Aid and Rescue Squad #1, Ramtown First Aid, FarmingdaleHowell First Aid, Lakewood First Aid, Freehold First Aid and Emergency Squad, Jackson First Aid and the Southard Fire Department responded. Extrication tools from Howell First Aid and Southard Fire went to work to extricate all patients. As the patients were removed from the bus they were loaded into the 11 waiting ambulances.A special thanks to Certified Auto Mall and MTS Towing for their assistance in getting and delivering the bus. The Egg Harbor Township Fire Department held its annual blood drive in support of the Red Cross on June 28, 2013, at Charles Maxwell Hall adjacent to the Farmington Volunteer Fire Company. Over 50 pints of blood were donated along with 100 percent quota for double red cell donations. LEE G. SHANLEY APPOINTED NATIONAL COORDINATOR FOR “TERRY FARRELL FIREFIGHTERS FUND” Lee G. Shanley, a resident of Farmingdale, New York, has been appointed to the position of National Coordinator for the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund. The not-for-profit fund directly supports the firefighters who serve our communities. Shanley is also an Instructor for Texas A&M University’s TEEX Emergency Management program and the former Director of Public Safety & Emergency Management at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, New York.

Water Rescue Training in N. Wildwood
On June 26, 2013, the North Wildwood and Wildwood Career Fire Departments held their joint Water Rescue quarterly discipline. The training consisted of a two-hour classroom portion followed by several hours of the skills portion taking place on the North Wildwood beachfront. This year’s instructors consisted of Chief John Schreiner of the Long Beach Township Beach Patrol, (formerly NJ State Police Sergeant 1st Class and founder of the Open Water Rescue), Captain Dominick McClain of the North Wildwood Fire Department, and Chief Stocks and Captain Schneider of the Wildwood Beach Patrol. Bound Brook FD Celebrates 125 Years
The Bound Brook Fire Department in Middlesex County celebrated their 125th Anniversary on June 22, 2013, by hosting the New Jersey State Exempt Firefighters Convention and then holding a gala parade. Before the parade there was an inspection of the apparatus by the New Jersey State Fire Chiefs Parade Judges Association, of which 138 pieces of apparatus from three states participated. Plainsboro Honors Roy and Ted Wagner
The Plainsboro Fire Company honored life members Roy and Ted Wagner for 45 years of active service to the community as volunteer firefighters at a special meeting in the firehouse on June 3, 2013. The Wagners joined the fire company on June 4, 1968 when Plainsboro was a rural, agricultural community with a population of about 1,600, and mainly known for its farms. Forty-five years later, the twin brothers are still answering the call. Roy currently serves as the fire company's assistant chief and Ted is Chairman of the elected Board of Commissioners of Plainsboro Fire District No. 1. Among them, they have served as chief of the fire company for 20 of the fire company's 53 years in existence and have been Top 10 Responders for their entire firefighting careers. Lanoka Harbor FD Chief Kevin Perrone Funeral ceremony held at Lanoka Harbor Fire Department Station 61 for Chief Kevin Perrone. Chief Perrone was battling kidney failure when he suffered a major and fatal complication. He served with the LHFD for 31 years. Obituary Marlboro Police and Fire Mourn Loss of Joseph Walker On June 27, 2013, the township of Marlboro in Monmouth County honored the life of a man who was an integral part of the beginnings of their police department. He was a wellrespected fire commissioner and firefighter as well as a father figure to any firefighter who needed him. Retired Police Chief and Fire Commissioner Joseph Walker, 77, died on June 22, 2013. Chief Walker, an Army veteran, started out as the business administrator for the growing township, according to the police department website. In the 1960s, a town of mostly farms and new neighborhoods, they decided there was a need for a fulltime police agency. Walker was one of the first patrolmen and was quickly promoted to sergeant to oversee the three-to-six man department. In 1968, he became the first Chief of Police in Marlboro and served honorably until his retirement in 1996. Walker was a member of the Marlboro Township Fire Company #1, District 28-1, for over 60 years and was actively serving as a fire commissioner. Joseph Walker was laid to rest at Old Brick Reformed Church in Marlboro.
