Well Done Boston Responders! On April 15, 2013, another horrific event challenged the dedication and skills of first responder when two pressure cooker bombs halted the Boston Marathon. Immediately, responders went into a different mode of operation and ran to help hundreds of people who were victims of the explosions. Three deaths resulted from this heinous act of terrorism and people were injured at the scene of this terrorist bombing. Emergency medical technicians at the finish line were there to help runners with blisters, sprains and aches. In the past, they occasionally would spring into action when a runner had more serious medical problems such as a heart attack. Never did they expect to be in the middle of a terrorist's act and have to spring into action to save the lives of children, moms and dads, spectators and runners alike. Many of the injuries sustained at the bombing were similar to injuries sustained by our soldiers as they continue to protect our freedom. Watching the event unfold live on television, you got a first hand view of how all responders ran to help the victims of the incident. They placed their lives on the line and never questioned their own mortality. I am sure thoughts of a third bomb ran through their minds as the second bomb rocked Boylston Street and Copley Square. The lives that were saved at the Boston Marathon Bombing were a direct result of the interdisciplinary training that goes on regularly in the fire, rescue and emergency services. The Mass Casualty Training that has gone on in the past and continues to go on between all emergency responders throughout the United States was tested in Boston that day. Hospitals were ready to handle the flood of victims who came to them with injuries that were anything but routine. Despite the three deaths and life altering injuries, many lives were saved. This was due to the constant training that YOU, the first responder takes seriously. Fire News would like to thank everyone who responded to the call of duty at the Boston Marathon. We would also like to thank our photographers who captured the moment in a professional and sensitive manor and risked their lives along side of the responders to document history. In the end, you continue to serve the United States of America as our First Responders. Congratulations on a job well done!

OPERATION WOUNDED WARRIOR FUNDRAISER The Nassau County Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior, has announced that The Charlie Daniels Band, with special guest, The Marshall Tucker Band, will hold a one-evening show at the Theatre at Westbury on Saturday, September 7, 2013, to benefit NCFF-Operation Wounded Warrior. Tickets ($65 to the public), will cost only $50, and $10 of each ticket sold is going directly to Operation Wounded Warrior. That money and more raised throughout the year by Nassau firefighters will be spent on our wounded warriors recuperating in hospitals in Bethesda, Fort Bragg, Camp Lejuene, as well as those receiving treatment in our own VA Hospital in Northport. Come early and join us for a PreShow car and motorcycle show outside the threatre. Doors open at 1700 and there will be music, food, and prizes outside prior to the concert which begins inside at 2000. Tickets may be purchased by calling Chris Baktis of the Franklin Square Fire Department, at 516-606-5987. The more tickets sold through Baktis, the more money for our wounded warriors.
CHRISTMAS IN JUNE On June 30, 2013, the Fire Riders of Nassau County FDNY MC is holding “Christmas in June” to benefit the children of St. Christopher’s in Sea Cliff. Sign up is from 0900 to 1200 at Applebees located at 938 S. Broadway (Rt. 107) Hicksville. KSU at 1200 and then to St. Christophers. A barbeque will follow at Tappen Beach. The cost is $10 per person, bring an unwrapped toy. Please, NO stuffed animals.
COLD SPRING HARBOR GOLF CLASSIC The Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department is hosting their 3rd Annual Golf Classic on August 12, 2013, at the Huntington Country Club in Cold Spring Harbor. Registration is at 1000 (Continental breakfast provided), and a shotgun start will go at 1100 (caddies provided; refreshments on course). At approximately 1600 a buffet dinner, raw bat, open bar will be held at the firehouse. Prizes will be awarded for men and women golfers. Fee is $175 per golfer. COMMACK SMOKE AND SMOKE The Commack Fire Department Company 4 will hold there 3rd Annual Smoke and Smoke. The event will be held on June 8, 2013, at 1600, in the park at the rear of CFD Headquarters. Abandoned Firehouse Burns in Central Islip
The Central Islip Fire Department received numerous calls on the afternoon of April 28, 2013, for a fire on the grounds of the former Central Islip Psychiatric Center (now the grounds of the New York Institute of Technology) at Lowell Avenue and Juniper Street. Chief of Department Ed Freudenberg arrived and transmitted a Signal 35, working fire, in what was formerly the Fire Department/Safety Department building for the psychiatric center. The building, over 100years-old, was being completely consumed by fire on arrival, resulting in the collapse of the roof into the structure within minutes. Operations consisted of the use of two aerials, two deck guns, and numerous 2-1/2 inch and 13/4 inch handlines.The Islip Town Fire Marshal requested that the Town of Islip provide heavy equipment to demolish the remains of the building due to the extensive damage. Central Islip responded on seven units with 86 firefighters. Mutual aid was provided by Hauppauge, East Brentwood, Islip Terrace, Lakeland, Brentwood and East Islip. Numerous brush fires were also contained to the north of the building, which were spread by windy conditions. Firefighting crews remained on the scene for over three-and-half-hours until the blaze was extinguished. There were no injuries reported during operations. -Fire News photos by Charles A. Malverne Fights Working House Fire Malverne firefighters responded to a house on Remsen Street in North Valley Stream on April 29, 2013, at 2150, after neighbors reported smoke coming from the home. On arrival, firefighters found a working fire on the second floor. The Malverne Fire Department, under the command of Assistant Chief Scott Rung, received mutual aid assistance from the other fourth battalion departments, plus Valley Stream and Elmont. Kitchen Fire Extends in Garden City The Garden City Park Fire Department responded to a house fire on Sycamore Drive on the evening of April 27, 2013. Extensive Overhaul Needed at Lynbrook Fire The Lynbrook Fire Department responded to the report of smoke coming from a house on Earle Avenue around 1630 on April 27, 2013. The fire seemed to have spread from the interior to the exterior of the home with considerable overhaul needed to control extension. Brentwood Battles Commercial Structure Fire
At approximately 0500 on April 5, 2013, the Brentwood Fire Department responded to a working factory fire on Cleveland Street off Pineaire Drive. The building houses Inter Mold, Inc., a plastic injection molding company. Upon arriving, Brentwood encountered heavy fire coming through the roof that had already collapsed. There was also an air conditioning unit on the roof. Brentwood requested assistance from neighboring departments that included Commack, Deer Park, West Islip and EMS units from Islip Exchange and Wheatley Heights. -Fire News photos by D. Numerous Calls Received in Bethpage
On April 22, 2013, the Bethpage Fire Department received numerous calls for a house fire on Cambridge Avenue. Assistant Chief Debobes arrived first and transmitted a working fire. He was followed shortly after by Assistant Chief Urbanick. Heavy fire was showing from the exposure 3 and 4 sides of the house and a shed in the back yard was also fully involved. First arriving Engines 907 and 9044 picked up hydrants on their way in and each stretched two handlines to the house. Ladder 3 set up on the 1-2 side of the house, while Ladder 4 set up on the 1-4 side of house and their crews laddered, searched and vented the home. The searches were negative and the two people that were home at the time escaped uninjured. Multiple mutual aid units were called to the scene and for standby due to the extensive overhaul required. The fire was brought under control in about an hour with no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Mutual aid was provided by Farmingdale for a FAST unit, and additional mutual aid was provided by the South Farmingdale, Hicksville, Plainview, Syosset, Westbury, Jericho and Levittown. -Fire News photos by Paul Mazza and Kevin Imm

Basement Fire Beat in North Babylon
On April 21, 2013, the North Babylon Fire Company responded to a reported basement fire in a Bond Street home. Engine 1-8-4 was first due, picked up a hydrant and stretched two lines to the basement of the house. Additional engine crews and the crew from West Babylon Ladder 1-9-4 searched and vented the house with the searches negative. The fire was knocked down and under control in about 20 minutes with no reported injuries. Additional mutual aid was provided to the scene by the Wyandanch Fire Company for RIT and the West Islip Fire Department stood by at North Babylon headquarters. Fire News Honored by Suffolk County Burn Center
On May 19, 2013, the Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters Burn Center held their Recogniton Day at Stony Brook University (See page 111.) On behalf of Fire News, Editor Dennis Whittam accepted a plaque that recognized Fire News’ $12,000 donation to the Suffolk County Burn Center. In 2012, a total of $61,000 was contributed to multiple organizations, including the Nassau County Burn Center. The donations came from Fire News’ 9/11 Tribute edition and from the Heroes Fund, which was started by Fire News.

ManhassetLakeville Handles Car Fire On April 4, 2013, the ManhassetLakeville Fire Department was alerted to respond to a car fire on the Northern State Parkway just west of New Hyde Park Road. Flames Halted in Farmingville
On April 19, 2013, the Farmingville Fire Department was activated for a structure fire in on Lakeside Drive. Units arrived to find a working fire on the side of the house. Mutual aid was requested from Holtsville to the scene. Midnight Blaze Battled in Hempstead
The Hempstead Fire Department responded to the report of a house fire on Cruikshank Avenue just before midnight on April 17, 2013. Units battled a first floor fire which was quickly extinguished. Commack Responds to Chimney Fire
The Commack Fire Department responded to the report of a chimney fire on Gaymore Lane in Commack on April 30, 2013 at 2005. Upon arrival of firefighters smoke was visible and truck companies opened up to check for extension. The aerial ladder was thrown to the roof so the chimney could be checked and fire could be extinguished. Bedroom Fire Knocked Down in Central Islip Chief Edward Freudenberg and seven units from the Central Islip Fire Department responded to William Avenue at 1544, on April 2, 2013. A second floor bedroom of a residence was involved in fire and heavily damaged by the flames. Mutual aid was provided by the Hauppauge and Islip Terrace Fire Departments. The Suffolk County Arson Squad and American Red Cross were also requested to respond to the scene. The Central Islip-Hauppauge Volunteer Ambulance was on scene. Brush Unit Responds in Melville On April 30, 2013, the Melville Fire Department responded to a fire behind the Ruland Road Deli on Ruland Road. Brush Unit 2-5-9 handled the fire and extinguished the debris and brush burning behind the building. -Fire News photo by Kevin Imm
Small Brushfire in Manorville On May 3, 2013, at approx 1915, Manorville was activated for a brushfire on Grumman Boulevard just east of Line Road. Upon arrival of 5-16-30 he instructed 5-16-2 to stretch a booster line and begin fire suppression. The next unit in was 5-16-GI1, which entered the woods and knocked down the back end of the fire. The fire was about 50 x 25 feet in area - a small job for the MFD. Units were on scene for approximately 45 minutes under command of 5-16-30 and 5-16-31. Great Job at Glen Cove House Fire
The Glen Cove Fire Department responded to a working house fire, at 1215, on April 27, 2013, on the corner of Landing Road and Rose Avenue. On arrival the house was covered in smoke from heavy fire on the second floor. Smoke was pushing out of the attic windows. First on the scene was 3rd Assistant Chief Bob Marino, followed by second Assistant Chief Phil Grella, with Chief Rodni Leftwich. First Assistant Chief Joe Solomito, manned the command post. First due Engine 529 was followed by 524. Sea Cliff Hook and Ladder was called to the scene for a second ladder. The first handline entered via the rear, where the fire had started and three handlines were advanced to the upper floors of the structure. Locust Valley Fire Department was contacted for a FAST unit. During the course of the fire more manpower was needed and a second FAST unit was called from Glenwood. Shed Fire in Massapequa At 2250 on May 11, 2013, the Massapequa Fire Department dispatcher put out a call for a house fire on Cherokee Place in Massapequa, around the corner from the quarters of Engine 634 and Ladder 636, which responded to the scene. Upon arrival the lieutenant of 634 advised the dispatcher they had a working fire. Further investigation showed that the fire was in a shed up against a house in the rear yard. The fire was quickly extinguished and there was no extension to the inside of the home. House Fire for North Merrick The North Merrick Fire Department was alerted to the report of a house fire on the evening of May 13, 2013. Arriving companies found a fire in a twostory private dwelling on North Drive. Engine and truck companies worked together to locate and quickly extinguish the blaze. Quick Knockdown in Deer Park

Exterior Fire Contained in Levittown
On May 13, 2013, the Bay Shore Fire Department was called to a house fire on Ackerson Boulevard. First arriving units encountered a 2-1/2 story home with fire showing from a second floor room on the exposure 2 side. Engine 3-1-3 was first due and stretched multiple handlines into the house, followed by Engine 3-1-5, who picked up a hydrant and supplied 3-1-3. The crew from Ladder 31-4 laddered, vented and searched the house, with all searches negative. Mutual aid was provided by the Brentwood Fire Department for RIT and additional mutual aid to the scene and for standby by West Islip, Islip Fire Departments and the North Babylon Fire Company. Smithtown Makes Quick Knockdown
The Smithtown Fire Department responded to a working fire on Merrivale Drive on May 4, 2013, at 1825. A fire broke out next to the home and quickly extended inside. Upon arrival of Engine 423, an aggressive attack was made, quickly knocking down the main body of fire. Units were back in service in 30 minutes. Quick Stop by Hicksville The Hicksville Fire Department responded to a working fire on East Marie Street on May 3, 2013, at 1115. The fire, which appeared to be accidental, broke out on the rear porch and extended to the house. Firefighters were quickly able to bring the flames under control with minimal damage. Occupants Assisted at Fire Damages Expanded Levitt Ranch Levittown Basement Fire
A fire of undetermined cause damaged a Sunset Lane home on March 14, 2013. The alarm, which was transmitted at 2108, brought all units of the Wantagh Fire Department to the scene to find fire in an expanded Levitt ranch. The fire was in the rear portion of the home on the first floor and had extended via voids into the second. Two handlines were taken into the home and two 2-½ inch lines were used to protect adjacent homes. The fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes. On April 3, 2013, the Levittown Fire Department responded to a house fire on Courtney Lane. Arriving units were met with heavy smoke and fire from the basement and rear of the home. A woman and child were assisted from their burning home by a Nassau County police officer and Emergency Ambulance Bureau AMT prior to the department's arrival. The fire had extended to the first floor of the structure. Crews were able to knock down the fire before it extended into the attic. Heavy Smoke in Hempstead Hempstead firefighters responded to the report of a basement fire on the afternoon of Wednesday May 1, 2013. Chief Clark was in command. Units arriving at the Tennessee Avenue home found a heavy smoke condition in the basement with extension to the upper floors. Great Stop in Terryville At approximately 1500 on April 29, 2013, the Terryville Fire Department was alerted to a reported structure fire on Halsey Street. Upon arrival of the first responding chiefs, smoke was visible from a second floor bedroom. The crew from Engine 12 quickly arrived and pulled a Mattydale, entered the structure and located the fire that was in a second floor bedroom. They made a quick knockdown of the fire, preventing the blaze from extending to the rest of the home. East Northport Battles Barn Blaze On Monday, May 6, 2013, the East Northport Fire Department was activated for a structure fire in a large barn at Johnson Farms on Cedar Road. Under the command of Chief Joseph Ervin, East Northport FD responded with three engines, a ladder truck, two ambulances and approximately 60 members. Chief Ervin quickly established command and called a mutual aid from the Commack and the Northport Fire Departments which stood by at East Northport's headquarters. The Town of Huntington Fire Marshal, as well as the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad, was called to the scene for an investigation. Second Hit in Plainview On April 8, 2013, at 1616, the Plainview Fire Department responded to their second car fire in a day. This fire was in a parking lot on Bethpage Sweet Hollow Road. The burning car was up against a trailer, but was knocked down by a firefighter at the scene before it had a chance to extend to the trailer. Foam Used at Amityville Car Fire In the early morning hours of April 16, 2013, the North Amityville Fire Company was called to a reported car fire on Essen Drive. Assistant Chiefs Harley and Collins, along with Engine 1-7-1 and Heavy Rescue 1-7-5, responded and arrived to find an Acura sedan parked in front of a house and fully involved. Central Islip Responds to Federal Court House On the afternoon of March 29, 2013, the Central Islip Fire Department received notification of a fire at the Federal Court House Complex at 100 Federal Plaza. First Assistant Chief Kevin McAteer informed dispatch that smoke was showing from the roof of the building. It was found that machinery in a cooling unit was involved and the fire was extinguished using standpipe operations. Mutual aid was provided by Brentwood (aerial to scene), East Islip (aerial to scene), Hauppauge (pumper to scene) and East Brentwood (engine to CIFD HQ). Also responding were the Islip Town Haz-Mat Team, Islip Town Fire Marshal, Central Islip-Hauppauge Volunteer Ambulance and additional ambulance companies. Flames Rage in Coram On April 21, 2013, the Coram Fire Department responded to the North Isle Village Apartments, for a rapidly advancing fire. Crews aggressively went to work to search for any trapped occupants in the 16-unit apartment building, while lines and equipment went to work. As fire made its way into the attic, Chief Tim Timms ordered an exterior operation. With the help of mutual aid from Selden, Mt. Sinai, Miller Place, Farmingville and Medford, the fire was safely brought under control. The Port Jefferson Volunteer Ambulance Corp responded to the scene and assisted with firefighter rehab. Wantagh and Seaford Handle Haz-Mat Call A Wantagh Haz-Mat Team Technician, under the protection of a Seaford hose line, removes an acetylene tank from the basement of a Jerusalem Avenue apartment complex in Seaford. The tank began leaking and caught fire as plumbers were working in the basement. Seaford firefighters moved into the basement and quickly knocked down fire that had extended from the tank. The Wantagh Haz-Mat Team was called to assist with the operation and determined that it was safer to quickly remove the tank and plug it outside then to compete with electrical panels and the water used to extinguish the fire. Fire Service Honors the Fallen from West, Texas The lives of the 10 firefighters who died battling the West, Texas fire and explosion were remembered during a memorial service that was held on April 25, 2013. Thousands of firefighters from around the country joined President Obama and the First Lady to pay respects to the families, friends and co-workers of the fallen. “We want to be sure everyone within the fire service can participate in this heartfelt tribute to these courageous men and their survivors,” said Chief Ron Siarnicki, executive director of the Foundation. “For that reason, the Foundation’s television partner, Crosscreek Television Productions from Alabama, volunteered to join the Foundation to provide live coverage of the memorial service to TV and internet audiences.” Live streaming was available on the Foundation’s website, www.firehero.org /westtexas Immediately after the tragedy, the NFFF was on the ground in Texas, offering assistance and support to the department, families and friends through the Local Assistance State Team (LAST). Because of the large loss of life, the Foundation expects to be there for a lengthy period of time, providing peer counseling, and support in many other ways. April 10, 2013, at 1218, the Cutchogue Fire Department was dispatched to Dean Drive for a reported structure fire. First arriving police and fire units were confronted with a fully involved house fire with fire already burning through the roof. tially deployed several hose lines to battle the blaze, while the crew from Engine 8-5-3 worked to protect the neighboring home. Water to fight the blaze was supplied to the scene by 8-5-1 that utilized a hydrant that was located in almost in front of the home. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad. Due to the efforts of the fire-
fighters, there was no additional damage to any neighboring homes and no injuries were reported for the operation that took over two hours to contain. Cutchogue was assisted by Mattituck at the scene with an RIT unit, while Southold provided standby coverage at the Cutchogue firehouse. Remembering a Tragedy 50 Years Ago
Fifty years ago on April 30, 1963, in Lynbrook, Engine Company 1 and Tally-Ho Engine Company 3 collided at the intersection of Hempstead Avenue and Peninsula Boulevard, while responding to a reported house fire on nearby Earle Avenue. Three engine company firefighters were killed in the crash, as was a Lynbrook crossing guard who ran into the roadway in an attempt to stop the engines. On Sunday, April 28, 2013, Engine Company along with the Lynbrook Fire Department membership, Ladies Auxiliary, Junior
firefighters, and state, town, and village officials, assembled at the Lynbrook Firefighters Memorial on Sunrise Highway to remember those firefighters on the crash's 50th anniversary. Dogs Saved in Brentwood
On May 1, 2013, at 1827, Brentwood Fire Department responded to a structure fire at on Spur Drive North in North Bay Shore. Firefighters, assisted by Suffolk County Police officers, were able to rescue two dogs trapped inside the home. One firefighter was treated at the scene for minor injuries sustained while removing one of the dogs. Busy Day in Deer Park On May 13, 2013, at 0820, the Deer Park Fire Department responded to a one-year old with burns to the arm from hot water. The burns were severe enough to airlift the child by SCPD helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital Burn Center. Chief Larry Bradbury 1-4-31 had the helicopter land at the Robert Frost Middle School football field. Across from the landing zone on Pitt Street was Deer Park Chief Phil Scarfi (1-4-33) who was handling a 91-year old male in cardiac arrest and CPR was in process. Car Burns in Bay Shore
On April 17, 2013, the Bay Shore Fire Department received multiple calls for an unknown type fire at 5th Avenue and Marc Court. When Engine 3-1-3 arrived they found a Honda sedan involved in the parking lot in the rear of an apartment complex, Engine 3-1-1 arrived shortly thereafter. The fire was extinguished in about 20

The Safety Officer Standard Operating Procedures (SOP'S) and Standard Operating Guidelines (SOG's) are important documents in making your incident operation safe. The procedure can be formal (written) or informal (something that's always been done). They also can be from memorandums and from directives and orders. They also can be developed from training manuals. These procedures, when used during training could ensure an appropriate response and put everyone "on the same page". According to (Dodson, 2007, page 20), "No matter what the source, the key component is that formal processes and evolutions are in writing. In taking this approach, the department achieves consistency in its operations." The safety officer can then use these procedures at the incident, as a guide.

EMS ACROSS THE ISLAND Wandering Eyes P.D. and F.D. Cause Pileup on the LIE Respond to MVA
The Nassau County Police and Syosset Fire Departments responded to a serious accident on Woodbury Road north of Market Drive on April 30, 2013 at 1430. A Ford apparently lost control and struck a utility pole shearing it at the base before coming to rest against a tree. The lone driver was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated by firefighters. After being removed from the vehicle the driver was transported by the Nassau County Police Department ambulance to Nassau County University Hospital in East Meadow, suffering serious injuries. On April 19, 2013, the Holtsville Fire Department was called to the scene of a five-car MVA on the Long Island Expressway, in the eastbound lane just west of Exit 62. Due to rubbernecking of a disabled tractor trailer in the westbound lanes, traffic in the eastbound lanes came to an abrupt halt, causing the chain reaction accident. Melville Handles Service Road Heavy Rescue
Northport Responds to Three-Vehicle MVA
The Melville Fire Department responded to several accidents on the North Service Road of the L.I. Expressway, west of Bagatelle Road, on April 19, 2013. Firefighters used hydraulic tools to remove two occupants from an overturned SUV, which struck a light pole, then crashed through a fence and overturned. There was also a nearby rear-end collision that resulted in two additional aided. About 35 firefighters and rescue personnel were on the scene with four ambulances, an engine, heavy rescue, and fire police, under the command of Chief Michael Carrieri, and Assistant Chiefs Mike McKeefrey and Jason Bernfeld. The crash involved a Ford contractor's van that collided with a Chevy Tahoe and a parked Lincoln. East Northport and Kings Park assisted with two additional ambulances. Three female patients suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to Huntington Hospital by Northport and East Northport Rescue. Locust Valley Overturn Results in Haz-Mat Operation
On April 8, 2013, the Locust Valley Fire Department responded to the report of an overturned cement truck with entrapment on Piping Rock and Underhill Roads. Arriving units found an overturned cement truck with the driver self-extricated and uninjured. The trucks saddle tanks were leaking fuel and crews used sand to dike off the area. Mother’s Day Traffic Snarled in Lakeview The Lakeview Fire Department responded Sunday evening May 12, 2013, when a wayward box truck smashed into an overpass on the Southern State Parkway at exit 18/Eagle Avenue. Old Betsy Comes Home for a Visit
On April 21, 2013, Melville's old 2-5-16 unit returned home. The vehicle is a 1935 Mack Ladder Truck. It was driven to Melville Fire Department Headquarters from the Smithtown Fire Department. The truck was sold to Melville in 1960 and sold back in 2011 for one dol-

Medford Handles Rush Hour Blaze Around 0730 on May 20, 2013, the Medford Fire Department was activated for a reported motor vehicle accident on the eastbound Long Island Expressway at North Ocean Avenue. As units went on the road, dispatch advised the accident involved a tractor-trailer truck and another truck. The tractor-trailer became heavily involved in fire. The expressway was closed, eastbound, for an extended period of time. Mutual aid was requested from Yaphank for a tanker. Overturn Handled in Holtsville
The Holtsville Fire Department was activated for a reported overturn on Long Island Avenue and Wendy Drive. Unit 5-11-30 arrived to find a one-car accident with the car down an embankment and on its roof. The driver was able to get out of the vehicle and was treated by Holtsville EMS. Babylon Town Chiefs Honor Councilwoman McVeety On April 5, 2013, the officers and members of the Town of Babylon Fire Chiefs Association (BTCA) honored Ellen McVeety who recently retired as Councilwoman of the Town of Babylon. This year after Super Storm Sandy devastated the East Coast, a long time member of the BTCA called Vice President Jim Harrington to make a donation, but wanted to ensure it went to Babylon Town families. Vice President James Harrington and President Jeff Thompson contacted Town of Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer to set this up and Councilwoman McVeety was also brought into the planning. As a result, the Town of Babylon Chiefs Sandy Relief Fund was created. Ellen had recently finished her term as councilwoman and was honored by her colleagues in town at a retirement dinner in her honor. In place of any gifts she requested that all money that would have been given in gifts go to the relief fund. Chief Thompson’s term of office as President completed and Vice President Harrington was elected as President on November 21, 2012. All of the Town of Babylon Fire Departments and Wyandanch-Wheatley Heights Volunteer Ambulance Corps conducted a “fill the boot” event with members and apparatus stationed all around the town and raised over
$60,000 in four hours. A single donation of $15,000 was made by an individual a few days before Christmas. The officers of the Chiefs Association and Ellen walked door to door in heavily damaged areas searching for homes where children lived. When these homes were located a total of $15,000 was donated to them in the form of $250 gift cards for Toys Are Us.
A lottery system was set up for the distribution of funds and so far over $125,000 has been raised and distributed. Ellen has been there through it all and at the November 21, 2012 meeting now-BTCA President Harrington requested that McVeety be honored by making her an Honorary Chief and life member of the association. The request was passed unanimously by all members and departments and they also voted to hold a retirement party her honor. The North Lindenhurst Fire Department offered their firehouse to hold the event and all departments contributed to fund it. President Harrington along with the officers and trustees presented Ellen with a plaque and a jacket. Supervisor Schaffer and the town board presented Ellen with a plaque honoring her for her dedicated service to the town. Amityville Chief Charles Scudlo and North Lindenhurst Chief Brian Gassen also made presentations. Ellen is looking forward to continuing her work as co-chair of the relief fund and working together with the BTCA. Obituary Ex-Chief Stephen B. Feron, Hauppauge F.D. Answers His Last Alarm Ex-Chief Stephen B. Feron, a member of Engine Company 4, Hauppauge Fire Department, answered his last alarm on May 19, 2013. Steve had served over 48 years in the volunteer fire service. Steve was born in March 1940, in Floral Park, NY. After graduating from Floral Park Memorial High School, he joined the United States Army. In 1961, following his honorable discharge from military service, he joined the Alert Engine Company #1, Floral Park Fire Department. His late brother, Everett Feron, was also a member of the Alert Company. Steve held various jobs, including that of bank teller, before settling on a career with Con Edison in New York City. In 1965 he married Maud Holland of Stewart Manor. Their first child, Sheila, was born in 1966 in Floral Park. In 1968 they moved from Floral Park to Hauppauge. Maureen, their second child, was born in 1968 and in 1972 a son, Stephen A, was born. On January 4, 1971, Steve became a member of the Hauppauge Fire Department and was assigned to Engine Company 4. He came up through the ranks, serving as 2nd Lieutenant, 1st Lieutenant and Captain of his company. In April, 1983 he was elected 2nd Assistant Chief, in April 1985 he became 1st Assistant Chief and in April, 1986 he was elected Chief of Department, a position he held for three years.
In January 1990 Steve was appointed to the position of Deputy Fire Coordinator in the Town of Islip. In 2000 he was honored with a Community Service Award by the Hauppauge Rotary Club. He was a member of the Smithtown Chief’s Council, the Islip Chief's Council, the Suffolk County Chief's Council and the Floral Park Fire Department Benevolent Association. He also served as a Trustee with the Hauppauge Volunteer Firefighter’s Benevolent Association. Steve was an active member of the Hauppauge Fire Department right up until his passing, serving as an active member of the Fire Police Squad. Steve leaves his children, Sheila (and her husband Robert), Maureen and Stephen A. (and his wife Kelly). He also leaves four loving grandchildren: Stephen Robert, Anna Maureen, Jack Joseph and Stephen Thomas. Chief Feron was interred at Pinelawn National Cemetery next to his late wife, Maud. Chief Feron was an icon in the Hauppauge Fire Department and he will be deeply missed.
The members of the Hauppauge Fire Department salute him for his friendship, loyalty and dedication to his community and to the volunteer fire service he so proudly served.

Saving Our Own On April 15, 2013, at approximately 1725, the Coram Fire Department ambulance was returning from St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson after bringing a patient to the emergency room. While en route back to Coram, the employed paramedic began experiencing chest pain and notified the driver of the ambulance he needed to go back to the hospital. Shortly thereafter the paramedic became unresponsive. The driver immediately alerted the Terryville Fire Department dispatch of the situation and advised them he was responding to the firehouse for assistance. The ambulance responded to the firehouse just as EMT-CC Kevin Bader walked in. Bader was advised of the situation and found the paramedic on the ground in cardiac arrest. EMT-CC Bader aggressively treated the patient with Basic Life Supportive measures including CPR. EMT-CC Bader was given the cardiac monitor from Coram’s ambulance. After assessing the patients EKG rhythm, he was found to be in ventricular fibrillation. Once EMT-CC Bader recognized that the patient was in a lethal cardiac rhythm he managed to successfully defibrillate the patient. Once this life saving action was completed, the patient had a return of spontaneous circulation. The patient regained consciousness during the transport to St. Charles Hospital by a combination crew of Terryville Fire District EMS and Coram EMS personnel. Locust Valley Installs 2013 Chiefs
On April 8, 2013, the new chiefs of the Locust Valley Fire Department were sworn into office by the Board of Fire Commissioners. Brian Nolan was sworn in as the new Chief of Department, with Peter Greenfield as First Assistant Chief, Kevin Barry as Second Assistant Chief and Andrew Akapnitis as Third Assistant Chief. “I am both humbled and honored to continue in the legacy
of the Chiefs who have served before me,” stated Nolan who is the 54th Chief of Department in the departments 120-year history. Also taking office is Philip Converse who will serve as Secretary and Michael Bono who will serve as treasurer. Dr Jorge L. Gardyn Re-appointed by Unanimous Vote to Nassau Community College Board of Trustees Jorge L. Gardyn, MD, FACP, of Garden City, has been reappointed by a unanimous vote of the Nassau County Legislature to the Nassau Community College Board of Trustees. In his remarks to the County Legislature, Dr Gardyn stated that, “Nassau Community College is one of the gems that the County has,” and, “provides a springboard for our young people to be able to make a successful career, to be able to use the education process to further their goals and aspirations and to become productive residents of Nassau County.” He added, “It’s the students who come first, but there is also a fabulous faculty at the college, and there is a wonderful administration all working together.” Dr Gardyn’s appointment was greeted warmly during the legislative hearing. Legislator Francis X. Becker, Jr. complimented Dr Gardyn for his community service. “You are a true humanitarian. You truly put people first in your life,” he said, adding, “You’re really a blessing to each and every one of us and a blessing for Nassau County.” Dr. Gardyn is a Board Certified Internist who is currently the Division Chief of Occupational and Corporate Medicine at Nassau University Medical Center. He has been in private practice since 1990, and in 1995 he started Island Occupational Medical Resources, IOMR, which is an Occupational Testing and Medical Resource practice specializing in providing high quality medical exams to the firefighting community and corporations on Long Island. Dr. Gardyn is at the forefront of understanding and clinically evaluat-
ing cardiovascular strain and disease in firefighting. His ability to understand cardiovascular risk and evaluate that in his clinical practice with the Fire Service (e.g. fitness for duty, return to work, and other clinical risk assessments), has made him a leader in his field. In 2007, IOMR, through its partnership with the Nassau University Medical Center, began to provide the OSHA medical examinations for the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office, Nassau County Police Department, Nassau County Department of Social Services, Nassau County Department of Public Works, and the Nassau County Parks and Recreation Department. As Division Chief at the Nassau University Medical Center, Dr. Gardyn also runs the Employee Health for the hospital. In this role he established the first computerized Mask Fit Program for any hospital on Long Island, and established the protocol for the hospital's Respiratory Protection Program in accordance with OSHA guidelines. Dr. Gardyn, and the entire IOMR team, are strong supporters of the Firefighter Cancer Support network and continuously work to advance the care of fire service members and their families through all aspects of the medical community. In March of 2011, IOMR moved to its new state-of-the-art facility on the border of Nassau and Suffolk counties. Through its strategic partnerships, it can provide its patients with a full array of ultrasound and noninvasive vascular testing, cardiology, orthopedics and physical therapy. Their commitment is not limited to an annual physical exam, but to support firefighters medical needs throughout the year.

Students Paint Manorville Logos
Ex-Captain Chris Steel of the Manorville Fire Department Company # 4 worked on a community service project with Art Teacher Joe Bridgwood of the Eastport South Manor High School. The project focused on having some students paint the New Company # 4, 111 Roadrunners logo on murals to hang in the new Manorville Station # 2 on Halsey Manor Road and County Road 111. Two, 4-foot by 4-foot murals were painted by seven girls in the high school. These two paintings will be proudly displayed at Station # 2, the home of the Company # 4, 111 Roadrunners. One additional 2.5-foot x 2.5' foot painting was painted by one of the seven girls. This smaller painting will proudly be displayed in the New Hurricane Wings and Grill opening on County Road 111 in Manorville. These Girls did a tremendous job on these paintings. When the paintings where all completed, the members of Company # 4 invited the two teachers and seven girls for a small thank-you event. We presented each girl a certificate of appreciation for their artistic talents, along with let-
ter of thanks, which also included 10 hours of community service time for their efforts. The two co-owners of Hurricane Wings and Grill were present, so they could receive the smaller painting from Jessica DeAngelis, the girl who painted this image by her self. Drill Challenges Brookhaven Memorial Hospital
On April 19, 2013, EMS agencies from throughout Suffolk County came together to participate in an MCI drill in support of Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. The drill, code named SurgEx 2013, was designed to test the hospital’s ability to deal with a 20-percent increase in patients arriving at the emergency room during a short time frame. Approximately 150 first responders participated in the drill that was commanded by South Country Ambulance Chief Gregory C. Miglino, Jr. Also participating in the drill was the Hagerman Fire Department, representatives from Suffolk County FRES and Suffolk County EMS coordinators. During the exercise, firefighters and first responders rescued “victims” from a “crash” involving a passenger bus. The victims — portrayed by students from Bellport High School and members of the Hagerman Fire Department Junior Squad, the South Country Ambulance Corps Junior Squad and the Mastic Ambulance Corps Junior Squad — were treated for their injuries and transported to Brookhaven Hospital. Fire News Attends CFSI On May 8-9, 2013, the Congressional Fire Services Institute hosted the 25th Annual National Fire and Emergency Services Dinner and Seminars in Washington, DC. It was an opportunity for fire service representatives to engage Congressional leaders and administration officials in discussions about federal programs and legislation addressing the needs of local first responders. Throughout the two-day event, CFSI hosted a series of seminars focusing on issues that directly relate to the safety of first responders. Covering important topics such as inter-operable communications, federal grant programs, health and safety, and pending federal legislations, the seminar program helps fire service leaders understand the role of the federal government in training and equipping local first responders. Suffolk County is Ready with MERV
What is a MERV? It’s the type of vehicle first responders hope they will rarely have to activate. But having the new Medical Ambulance Bus or “Major Emergency Response Vehicle” (MERV) on hand for large scale emergencies is a tremendous benefit to an area. The vehicle is designed to provide mass casualty incident response and transport, medical evacuations, on site triage, firefighter and EMS rehabilitation and medical support for long-term emergency incidents. This resource is the first outside the City of New York within the state, and a collaborative effort by regional Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI). “This bus will be a huge resource across the region when it comes to providing emergency services,” said Commissioner Williams. “It can be activated during large scale fires, evacuations, bus, train or ferry accidents, and, weather-related emergencies when there is a need to treat people at the scene or transport them to hospitals.” The 42-foot unit comes equipped with stretchers to accommodate 20 patients and medical personnel for transport, patient monitoring equipment, metered oxygen, electrical capacity to supply power for necessary medical equipment, and rehab supplies, all in a climate controlled unit. The cost for the vehicle was $380,000 and it was purchased through a federal grant provided by the Department of Homeland Security. “These funds have been put to great use,” said Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone. “We are just a few weeks away from the start of hurricane season, which provides a constant reminder that we have to remain vigilant when it comes to protecting our region.” The Medical Ambulance Bus is housed at the County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Service and will be available for activation as you read this. “This could not have been made possible without the hard work and efforts of numerous agencies,” said Robert Delagi, Director EMS and Public Health Emergency Preparedness. “The service will be available not only throughout Suffolk County but the entire state, making this another prime example of shared services as a cost efficient strategy.” The first MAB/MERV was received by the FDNY. Mastic F.D. Takes the Chili Title On May 11, 2013, three chili cooking teams gathered at the Mastic Fire Department for the 1st Annual Chili Cooking Contest. Three teams from the Mastic Fire Department, the Mastic Beach Fire Department and the Mastic Ambulance Company gathered together and created their individual style of chili. The judges for the contest were Town of Brookhaven Councilman Dan Panico, Tri Hamlet editor Jo Vega and Fire News editor Dennis Whittam. After a lengthy and delicious tasting contest, First Place was granted to the Mastic Fire Department. Master-of-Ceremonies Harry Acker introduced fellow Commissioners Peter Gunther, Dr. Jack Geffken, Gus Zeis, and Kurt Martin. Following an Invocation by Chaplain Paul Heglund, Commissioner Acker administered the oath-of-office to the new Chief of Department Nicholas Feeley. Chief Feeley installed First Assistant Chief Brian Mark, and Second Assistant Chief Thomas Boyd. Ex-Chief Paul Heglund was installed as Deputy Chief Chaplain, Dr. Jack Geffken as Deputy Chief Medical, and Steve Silverman as Deputy Chief Photographer. Company officers installed were as follows: Engine Company No. 1 - Captain Luis Moreno, First Lieutenant William DeSantis, Second Lieutenant Christopher Cunningham. Engine Company No. 2 - Captain Larry Burlingame, First Lieutenant John Stevenson. Eagle Truck Company - Captain Bruce Waring, First Lieutenant Robert Simpson, Second Lieutenant Kyle McLaughlin. Rescue Squad - Captain Andrew Aberham, First Lieutenant Debora Thide, Second Lieutenant Lawrence Donnelly. Fire Patrol - Captain Samuel Jones. Outgoing Chief Andrew Stevenson was recognized for his dedicated service as chief from 2011-2012, and presented with an award depicting the badges of all the offices he has held as well as his Chief's helmet. Top Fire and Rescue Responder Awards were presented to members that answered over 100 rescue and 150 fire calls last year. The recipients were Brian Beinwald, James Feeley, Kyle McLaughlin, Joseph Morency, Steven Peters, George Puga, Peter Reilly and Edgardo Marcucci. Awards for answering over 150 fire calls went to Larry Burlingame, Elias Felluss, Peter Hahn, Andrew Heglund, Paul Heglund, Robert Simpson, Andrew Stevenson, and Bruce Waring. Awards for 100 rescue calls were given to Larry Donnelly, Dr. Jack Geffken, Steve Jones, David McGovern, Debora Thide, and John Knoph. The Rescue Squad Member of Year Award was presented to outgoing Captain Michael Ryan. The Harry R. Northport Hosts Chuck Varese Extrication Tournament The sixth annual Chuck Varese Extrication Tournament was a big success this year, due to the participation of 24 teams from 15 departments, and the generous support of sponsors. The event was hosted on May 11, 2013, by the Northport Fire Department, and held in the memory of Northport Firefighter Chuck Varese, 25, who was killed by a drug-impaired driver in April 2008. Chuck is the son of Northport Ex-Chief Robert “Beefy” Varese, who said that the tournament is a, “Labor of love and my gift to my son every year.” It’s held as a ‘working memorial’ for Chuck, who was active with the department’s JOLT Team. Beefy said that the competition promotes great camaraderie between the departments, as well as being a good training experience for the teams. First place honors were awarded to Northport Fire Department Hook and Ladder, Second Place to the Huntington Manor Fire Department and Third Place to the East Northport Fire Department. The Best Evolution Time Award went to Huntington Manor, and Garden City Park received the Sportsmanship Award. Ex-Chief Jack Kennedy Mourned in Medford The Medford Fire Department announced the passing of ex-Chief Jack Kennedy. Jack passed away after a brief illness. Councilwoman Honors Silver Medal Winners
Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia (far left) recently took special occasion to recognize Assistant Chief of the Syosset Fire Department Mark Mianulli, Jr., and ex-Chief of the Syosset Fire Department Joseph Fasano (third from right and far right, respectively), who received the Silver Medal of Valor from the Nassau County Fire Commission for their extraordinary efforts during a structure fire in July 2012. Their efforts directly contributed to the saving of Lt. Jack Lord of the Syosset Fire Department, a victim in the incident. On hand for the event and to thank these two members for their heroic actions was Louise Lord (second from right), mother of Lt. Jack Lord.

Babylon Firemen Man the Rails of Their Original Storm Engine at Maryland Fire Museum On May 4, 2013 Chief Paul Twardy, 1st Assistant Chief Mike Sasuk, the Babylon Fire Department History Committee and a group of ex-Chiefs attended the opening day of the Maryland Fire Museum near Baltimore. Part of the historical displays in the museum is an 1853 Hand Pumper which was the first pumper put into service by Babylon in 1881 and became the Storm Engine Company # 1. This hand pumper was brought to the fires and the volunteers would set it up and manually pump the long handles drafting water and feeding two 2-1/2 inch discharges where the hose lines were connected. The nozzles were approximately two-feet long and the members pumping would be able to produce a sizable stream of water. Opening day of the museum was extremely special as the Storm Engine was scheduled to be part of the festivities, allowing visitors to pump it throughout the day. When the chiefs and members arrived at the museum, the pumper was in the building on display as it usually is. The crew from Babylon was allowed to work with the crew from the museum taking the pumper out to the outdoor display area where a large portable tank had been set up from which to draft water. It was very exciting for the Babylon firefighters to actually set up the pumper just as it had been done in 1881. The pumper has a series of steps to lower and engage the pump handles, chock the
wheels, set up the suction and discharge hoses and nozzles. The crew from the museum taught the Babylon crew how to get the pump primed and get the water flowing through the discharge hoses. A discharge is opened slightly allowing the air to escape as the pump handles are slowly rocked up and down — walking the pump — filling it with water. Once the water comes out the discharge the crew stops long enough to open the discharges so that the water flows into the hoses. As the demand for more pressure is needed the crew pumps harder and faster. After a short time of doing this it became apparent how many people it must have taken constantly rotating and relieving each other to
make this operation come together. What a great cardio exercise ... manpower instead of horsepower! It was an honor and created a special memory for all those present at the museum and for the entire Babylon Fire Department to have been able to relive history and actually pump the very first pumper the department owned.
