Is it the Coronavirus?

Let’s face it, you respond to hundreds, if not thousands, of calls a year and it is easy to become complacent. Even on the fireground, we can get in trouble when we assume the call we are on is going to be like the last call. Is there truly a routine call?

I bring this up to YOU because of the recent outbreak of the new strain of coronavirus. The coronavirus can be mistaken for common cold, unless you are trained and know what to look for. I am certainly not an expert on the topic, but I did do some research that I hope helps you give thought to this disease. Does your patient have the flu or a common cold? What differentiates between the coronavirus and the common cold or flu?

According to recent literature, symptoms for the new coronavirus, now known as COVID19, are similar to those we know as a common cold or flu. Common coronavirus symptoms can include fever, a dry cough, shortness of breath, aching muscles and fatigue. Less typical coronavirus symptoms can be, phlegm buildup, headache, hemoptysis (coughing up of blood or blood-stained mucus from the bronchi, larynx, trachea or lungs) and diarrhea.

Symptoms atypical for coronavirus are a runny nose and a sore throat. According to a recent article, runny nose, cough, sore throat

and fever are symptoms are often similar when one starts to feel sick. That makes it difficult to tell if the illness is a virus or a bacterial infection. I strongly recommend that to visit www.dw.com/en/coronavirus-cold-or-fluhow-to-tell-the-difference/a-52233885 to review what I have read about the corona virus.

As experts warn, the coronavirus spread needs to be taken seriously. Prepare emergency dispatch and EMS providers to identify the symptoms and communicate with public health officials. With memories of the Ebola virus, think about having extra drills on PPE donning and doffing, fit testing and the creation of plastic-lined transport vehicles. You must be very aware of the spread of disease and you must understand the signs and symptoms of the coronavirus and be prepared to look after our patients while keeping your own safety in mind.

According to AMTrauma.org, consider the following for specific EMS management and transport considerations: If the patient exhibits symptoms of a lower respiratory infection (fever, shortness of breath/difficulty breathing, cough), place a surgical mask on the patient AND obtain a detailed travel history to affected countries within the past 14 days or close

contact with someone under investigation for COVID-19. If there is a history consistent with concern for potential 2019-coronavirus (COVID-19), initiate standard contact and airborne precautions (gloves, gown, N95 respirator) and eye protection (goggles) for EMS clinicians. Notify the receiving hospital (according to local protocols) of potential infection as soon as possible to allow for emergency department preparation. Use caution with aerosol generating procedures. Properly doff and dispose of PPE according to protocol.

Clean and disinfect using EPA registered disinfectants with known effectiveness against human coronaviruses. Waste management per policy for medical waste (red bag).

I recommend that you sit down with your County Regional Emergency Medical Services Council and discuss unified protocols so that you are ready for the unexpected.

Chesterfield House Fire Stopped

Firefighters from Chesterfield Fire and EMS responded on January 23, 2020, at 2005, to the 10200 block of North Donegal Road for a house fire. Fire crews arrived to find the house heavily involved. The house is located in a rural part of the county without any hydrants, so a water shuttle operation was established utilizing tankers and portable ponds. It took firefighters approxi-

mately two hours to get the fire under control. The four occupants and two dogs were able to escape the home without injury. The Chesterfield County Fire Marshal’s Office

determined the fire was accidental, caused by discarded smoking materials placed into a flower pot on the rear deck of the home.

Bedford Structure Fire

Recently, Bedford Fire Department units were dispatched to Longwood Avenue (former Bedford Middle School) for a reported structure fire with flames showing. Chief 1 arrived at 0258 to find a two-story masonry building with heavy fire showing from the second floor. Engine 1 protected the immediate exposure, while Ladder 1 established an elevated master stream on the A/D corner.

Tower 5 and Engine 51 (Forest) were assigned to the Charlie side of the building, while Ladder 10 (Saunders) operated on the A/B corner. Rescue 13 established RIT at the command post. Engine 5, Engine 8, and Wagon 1 all reverse laid LDH to nearby hydrants to relay to pumping apparatus on scene. Units operating were: E 1, L 1, W 1, R 1, C 1, E 51, E 5, T 5, E 8, L 10, R 13, M 14-1, M 14-2, M 14-6, County 3, County 10, Town of Bedford PD, Town of Bedford Public Works, and the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office. The fire was being investigated by the Bedford County Fire Marshal’s Office.

5 Buildings, 14 Townhouses, More Burn in Fairfax Co. 4-Alarmer

On February 8, 2020, at approximately 0940, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue responded for reports of a building fire in the 2800 block of Poag Street in the Groveton area of Fairfax County. Units arrived on scene and reported an advanced fire from the top floor of a five-story building under construction. Extremely windy weather and no sprinkler system made fighting the fire difficult.

Crews worked on the fire buildings, as well as trying to avoid extension to nearby occupied residences. The fire went to four alarms, drawing units from City of Alexandria, Arlington County, Prince George’s County and Fort. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries and were transported and evaluated at local hospitals. One civilian suffered minor injuries and was transported. The fire spread to five

Lynchburg Battles Structural Blaze On January 7, 2020, Lynchburg firefighters responded to a residential structure fire on Euclid Avenue in Lynchburg. Battalion 1 arrived on scene to find a two-story balloon frame structure with heavy fire showing on multiple sides.

Broken Bus, But a Good Field Trip Nonetheless

On November 1, 2019, students from Crystal Springs Elementary School in Roanoke were out on a field trip to Jamestown. On the way, their bus began to have issues on I-295, and eventually gave out at the intersection of Airport Drive and Washington Street. The bus had run up the curb and was dangerously sticking out into the busy street. Henrico Police Department blocked one lane off for safety, but needed to get the kids off the bus. Fire Station 3 stepped up and marched all 50 kids to the station, where they held the kids

in a picnic area. To make the most of the situation, and to keep the kids calm and entertained, firefighters saw this as a great opportunity to set up a Fire Prevention Show, let the kids tour the station and trucks, as well as use some of their thermal cameras. A special thanks to Station 3 and the HPD officers who stayed to turn this potentially scary situation into a field trip these kids won’t ever forget.

Rural Retreat Gets New Pumper/Tanker

The Rural Retreat Fire Department recently received this new gallon tanker and 1985 750-gpm pumper that were both worn out.

Bedford’s Special Ops Command

The Bedford County Department of Fire and Rescue’s (BCoFR) Special Operations Command (SOC) team was founded in 2003 as a result of the need for specialized services to support the department and because of the types of response and support needed after 9/11. SOC provides collapse rescue, rope rescue, USAR, trench rescue, confined space rescue, swift water rescue, large animal rescue, and hazmat response to Bedford County and outside the county when requested. What is great about this capability is that it is supported by highly dedicated and trained members of the volunteer departments within the county, as well as personnel from BCoFR. BCoFR SOC was notified in November 2019 that it was selected as part of Virginia’s build out of special capabilities, as one of the 19

swift water and flood rescue teams for the Commonwealth. SOC was just approved for a VDEM Homeland Security Grant to help procure equipment to expand its capabilities and provide a deployable response, while still being able to provide local coverage. Some notable deployments of the BCoFR SOC team include a joint VDEM request with Lynchburg Fire Department’s VA Division 3 Technical Rescue Team, to deploy in support of Hurricane Dorian; several large animal rescues, including one from Amherst County; tornado response in Campbell County; a gas explosion inside a residence; as well as calls for specialized rescue response throughout Bedford County.

Looking Back – South River FD

On June 29, 2019, crews responded to a garage fire on Red Hill Road in Fairfield. First-due units arrived to find a well involved garage. Firefighters from South River, Rockbridge Baths, Raphine,

Walkers Creek and Buena Vista came in to assist in efforts, along with the Rockbridge duty officer. The fire was quickly knocked down without incident.

On May 9, 2019, Waterway conducted hose testing at South River.

On May 1, 2019, crews responded to a garage fire on Possum Hollow Road. Mutual aid was brought in from Lexington, Effinger, South River and Buena Vista to assist.

On June 21, 2019, Captain Jonathan Wilmer’s dog Atlas was present and rode in the rig during the Raphine parade.

On June 28, 2019, crews responded to a structure fire in Augusta County. Firefighters arrived to find a well involved shed and quickly knocked down the fire. Assistance was brought in from Raphine, South River, Augusta County and Riverheads. No injuries were reported.

On January 30, 2019, firefighters responded to a structure fire on Old Providence Road. Crews from Raphine, South River, Riverheads and Stuarts Draft assisted in battling the blaze, along with the Augusta County duty officer.

On August 14, 2019, firefighters responded to a dump truck fire on Interstate 81 at the 201 mile marker in Fairfield. Pictured is Firefighter/EMT Kelly Jennings, and Firefighter/EMT Devin Jennings (mother and son).

Town Council Agrees to Purchase Old Chincoteague Fire House

This past October, the Chincoteague Town Council voted in favor of purchasing the fire department’s old firehouse. The firehouse (featured in the film Misty of Chincoteague) was originally built in 1930 in large part with funds raised by auctioning ponies brought over from Assateague Island during the annual pony swim. In 1957 the fire house was expanded to its current size which, in recent

years, the department has outgrown. After opening a newly built firehouse last spring, the old one sat empty and was put up for sale.

Hopefully the purchase will ensure the preservation of this historic landmark.
