Winter Blues are Almost Gone!

I really think we have had worse winters so far. Yes, it’s been cold, however on Long Island we survived an 18-inch snowstorm. In my early years as a firefighter, I looked forward to standing by at my firehouse for snowstorms. As I have aged, I find the warmth of my home a better place for me to ride out the storm!

Before I continue with my editorial, I would like to thank my company for riding past my home after a recent storm and taking the time to dig me out. Digging out the senior members of the Terryville Fire Department has been a tradition that is still carried out today. I know first-hand that snow standbys do not end immediately after the snow stops falling. The members traditionally ride past members in need to make sure their homes are cleared so that they can safely respond to calls. From a personal viewpoint, it hurts to stand on my driveway and watch my family of firefighters clear a path so I can continue to respond to calls. Thank you, Terryville Fire Department Company 2, for your help! I will have the coffee ready for you when you return after calls.

I would like to reflect on the recent rash of Line of Duty Deaths in our nations police departments. As I watched the live coverage at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in NYC of Detective

Wilbert Mora’s and Detective Jason Rivera’s funerals, I am not ashamed to say that there were times during the funeral service that I was teary eyed. I could feel the passion of His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan as he comforted the families of our fallen police officers.

I was genuinely moved by the outpouring of love from the thousands of police officers and other responders, who stood in the cold and snowy weather to show strength and offer comfort to the families of New York City’s fallen police officers. As I heard the voice of Detective Jason Rivera’s wife eulogize her husband. I became teary eyed. She brought back the importance of always hugging your family when you go to work as a first responder. You never know if you will return to hug them back. Like all responders, worldwide, we are present to help the members of our communities. I just wish that communities would realize this and encourage change to respect those individuals that are trying to make a difference.

According to the ODMP — Officers Down Memorial Page — nationally, there have been 35 LODDs in 2022.Thirty-one of those deaths happened in January! The causes of police officer deaths are varied. Visit www.odmp.org to learn more about police Line of Duty Deaths.

Spring is not far away. It is a time we see

our lawns return to their lush green color and we see our flowers start to emerge from the cold winter that is leaving us. In the fire service, it is a time of the year that we get out and resume our hands-on training at our fire academies and department training facilities. I am looking forward to spring 2022. Take the time to renew your commitment to training so that you are the best that you can be when you go into battle. I leave you with a quote I once heard, “Think positively and positive things will happen.”

Crews Operate at a Bridge Collapse in Pittsburgh

The Fern Hollow Bridge in Pittsburgh collapsed at 0639 on January 28, 2022.

When the bridge collapsed, there were five passenger vehicles and one Port Authority Bus on the span. It is unclear whether the collapse caused a large gas leak, or if the gas leak caused the collapse.

For around 30 minutes after the collapse, crews were operating on scene with a large diameter gas pipe free flowing. Police evacuated nearby homes and businesses until the gas was shut off. Due to what first responders found when they first arrived (and it was still dark out), a Level 1 MCI was declared, bringing in additional resources from both the city and surrounding areas.

Amazingly, there were only 10 minor injuries, with three requiring transport to the hospital. Some of those injuries were to first responders. As the scene unfolded, an offduty paramedic drove his pickup to the scene when hearing that crews were having trouble getting patients out of the ravine. The paramedic drove on a hiking trail to the scene and extricated one person in a Stoke’s basket and another person, who was uninjured, out to safety. After evacuating all of the victims, USAR resources, including K9s, were called in to determine if there were any victims underneath the bridge.

Luckily, there were none found.

The collapse occurred a few hours before President Biden arrived in Pittsburgh to give a speech on the bipartisan infrastructure bill. He did visit the scene. There were many responding agencies, including City of Pittsburgh FD, PD, EMS, Public Safety, Park Rangers, Homeland Security; Allegheny County Emergency Services; FEMA Pennsylvania Strike Team 1, PA Task Force 1; FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force; Secret Service; the NTSB; Ross/West View EMS; Baldwin EMS; Northwest EMS; The American Red Cross; The Salvation Army; Wilkinsburg Police; Swissvale Police; Port Authority Police; and Pittsburgh Public Works. - Fire News photos by Lance Lustig / Priority News Network

Dog Alerts Family to Fire At 1811 on January 16, 2022, Perkiomen Township Fire Company’s Tanker 66, Engine 66, Field 66 and an all-volunteer crew responded to a house fire on Hamilton Road in the township. Crews from Tanker 66 and Engine 66 found a smoldering fire near the fireplace with extension to the basement. Limerick, Skippack and Trappe No. 1 provided mutual aid. The homeowners were notified by their dog, Gunny, of the fire. Thanks to our volunteers and our mutual aid partners for responding.

Northampton Co. Fire Recently, the Northampton County Communications Center sent Bethlehem Utility 1, Engines 6 and 9, and Aerial 2 to 14th Avenue for an apartment fire. The caller stated that their kitchen was on fire. Utility 1 struck the second alarm, bringing in Engines 1 and 3, Ladder 1, and Utility 2. Engine 6 arrived to light smoke showing. Engine 6 stretched an attack line to the rear and quickly knocked down the fire. The balance of the second alarm was quickly canceled.

Perkiomen Assists At 1534 on January 24, 2022, Perkiomen Township Fire Company Tanker 66, Air 66 and an all-volunteer crew were dispatched as mutual aid to the 100 block of Larchmont Court in Upper Providence Township to assist Upper Providence and Trappe with a building fire. The initial report indicated “something upstairs smoking.” The residence was evacuated, firefighters secured the premises and the residents returned to the property an hour later.

Other companies providing mutual aid included Collegeville, Royersford, Phoenixville and Lower Providence.

Small Fire in Whitehall Firefighters from the Whitehall Fire Department responded to a garage fire in the 2100 block of Fuller Street on January 24, 2022. Crews were able to extinguish a minor fire in the building.

Greensburg House Fire Extends On February 10, 2022, crews responded for a house fire on Harrison Avenue in Greensburg. Additional calls from Seton Hill University reported flames visible from the school. The first line officer on the scene reported heavy smoke and flames from the rear of the house. The main house was a total loss after fire spread through the walls, with heavy damage to the neighboring home on the B side. There was minor damage to the home on the D side. Greensburg was assisted by all first and second alarm companies and crews remained on scene for approximately four hours.

Jordan Twp. Farm House Fire

On January 25, 2022, at 1314, crews responded for a house fire in Jordan Township, Northumberland County just east of the town of Pillow. Chief 63-1 of Herndon Fire Company arrived and confirmed the working fire. Pillow Fire Company 28 arrived, followed by mutual aid departments, and found heavy fire coming from the second-floor C side windows of 2 -1/2 story balloon frame farm house. Heavy smoke was beginning to push from an attic window on the B side as well as the eaves. The initial interior crews were met by hoarding conditions, but were able to make their way to the second floor and knock down an active room and contents fire. However, the fire had already made its way into the attic and eaves. Crews made their way to the roof via ladders, as other crews worked to chase down remaining fire from C and D sides. The request for second alarm was put out for extra manpower. Crews worked for several hours snuffing all lasting hot spots as a piece of heavy equipment was brought in to help with efforts. Units from Lower Northumberland, Upper Dauphin and Western Schuylkill Counties operated on scene.

Looking Back Philadelphia 1986 In July 1986 Philadelphia firefighters responded to Visions Strip Club and Inn, located at Philmont and Bustleton in Philadelphia. Careless smoking was said to have been the cause.

Philadelphia 1986 A newsstand caught fire at the corner of Bustloeton and Castor Avenues in Philadelphia, which had been in business for years. The attendant dropped a lit cigarette on a pile of newspapers, causing them to catch fire.

Wiconisco House Fire At 2352 on December 27, 2021, a call came in for a structure fire in the 200 block of Center Street in Wiconisco. Arriving crews found a 2-1/2 story wood frame with a basement and heavy fire on the A side. Crews pulled a 1-3/4 inch line and began to hit the heavy fire then sweeping to the left B side to wet down and protect the exposure, mere feet away. With mutual aid units arriving two firefighters worked their way on the A side porch to the entry door.

Following behind were two additional crew members hooking and pulling. With all the main fire knocked down crews turned to overhaul with numerous hot spots. Truck 22 working from the bucket on the A/D corner found fire in a part of the roof under slate shingles and from the eave. Additionally, interior crews found a small fire in the attic that had run the wall from the eave. After reaching the attic the fire flashed, igniting and emitting from the roof vent hole. A quick hit with a line from the exterior knocked down the fire and again overhaul continued. Crews worked for some time wetting down all the remaining hot spots.

One individual was transported from the scene while two others were treated and released at the scene. Two local residents knocked on doors to alert residents of the fire. One helped pull a man from the main fire building to safety.

Connoquenessing Twp. House Fire

On January 12, 2022, around 0730, Butler County 911 received a call for a trailer fire on Meadow Drive in Connoquenessing Township.

Station 12 (Connoquenessing), Station 20 (Evans City), Station 3 (Butler Twp. Fire District) and Station 99 (Butler Ambulance Service) were dispatched.

Shortly after dispatch Chief 12 arrived to find a house fire with all occupants out. Engine 12 arrived and Engine 20 worked the fire attack. Station 3 units arrived and assisted.

Kecksburg Structure Fire At approximately 0115, on February 12, 2022, Kecksburg was dispatched for an unknown type fire along Mennonite Camp Road. First personnel on scene reported a fully involved maintenance garage. Multiple tankers were called due to the proximity of the nearest hydrant. Due to the condition of the structure, and a roof collapse, extinguishing the fire was difficult. The garage was part of the Laurelville Mennonite Retreat Center.

Allentown House Fire

Firefighters from the City of Allentown were dispatched to a house fire on North Hall Street on January 11, 2022. Crews arrived to find a small fire in a third-floor window. Crews used a can to knock down the fire and were on the scene for about 30 minutes for overhaul. Battalion Chief Sean O’Neill was in command. Battalion Chief Bryce Thompsen worked one of his last shifts as an OT Lieutenant on Engine 10. Bryce retired in January from the Allentown Fire Department.

Gas Leak at Mattress Warehouse

At 1641 on December 28, 2021, Perkiomen Township’s Tanker 66, Air 66 and an all-volunteer crew responded to the Mattress Warehouse retail store at the Shoppes at Upper Providence on Ridge Pike in Upper Providence Township. Station 66 volunteers were dispatched to assist Upper Providence Township Fire and Emergency Services, and Trappe Fire Company 1 for a report of a gas odor/leak.

Ladder 77 responded and was directed to the investigate the roof.

Engine 68 investigated inside. Crews from Tanker 66 checked the exposure buildings for any odor of gas. Engine 77 established a water supply and determined it was a roof unit leaking and that unit was secured. PECO was called to the scene and all units remained on scene for about an hour.

Lower Frederick Bathroom Fire

At 1421 on January 7, 2022, Perkiomen Township Fire Company’s Tanker 66, Air 66 and an all-volunteer crew were dispatched to assist Lower Frederick Fire Company Station 52 with a report of a fire in a bathroom in the rear of a townhome in the 100 block of Zieglerville Road in Lower Frederick Township. The residents were alerted by their smoke detectors and were able to safely evacuate.

Station 52’s crew found a small fire on the second floor and were able to contain it to the bathroom. Assisting were Lower Frederick Police Department, Plymouth Community Ambulance Association Medic 308, Upper Salford Fire Company, Skippack Fire Company and Upper Frederick Fire Company.

Philadelphia 3-Car MVA

Philadelphia Engine 62, Ladder 34 and Medics 6 and 20 were called to a three-vehicle MVA on the 10000 block of Haldeman Avenue in December 2021. One vehicle made a left, causing two other vehicles to crash. The injuries were serious but not life threatening.

Kitchen Fire Extends At around 0830 on January 22, 2022, the Carbon County Communications Center sent Stations 8, 2 and 4, Lehighton EMS, and Lehigh County Station 29 (RIT) to Main Street for a house fire.

The caller stated that his kitchen was on fire. Deputy 402 reported heavy smoke showing from a three-story twin. Engine 814 arrived and took the rear of the house, and stretched a 1-3/4 inch attack line to the kitchen. Tanker 831 supplied Engine 814 while Rescue 451 stretched a line through the front door, where they were met with heavy fire conditions. Deputy 402 requested two additional tankers, bringing in Tankers 131 and 336. Tanker 431 began supplying Rescue 451. Crews darkened down the bulk of the fire within 30 minutes and began checking for extension and found fire in the walls, which had extended to the second floor. A line was redirected to the second floor, where they extinguished the fire. Crews remained on scene for about three hours.

Lucky in Philadelphia MVA

A reckless driver bounced off curbs while driving on Academy Road in Philadelphia in December. He then veered into oncoming traffic, slammed into two cars before his car burst into flames. This accident caused three injuries, but no one was killed and all injuries were relatively minor. The parking lot of a nearby shopping center was used as a triage area. Engine 22 Ladder 31 and Medics 20 and 32 responded.

Car Runs Over Driver Engine 65 and Rescue 4 were dispatched to an accident in the parking lot of Parx Casino in December 2021. A male had exited his car with the vehicle not in park. As it started to roll backwards, the male tried to jump in. He was not successful and the car ran him over pinning him underneath.

Crews used airbags and jacks to extricate him.

The man escaped with moderate injuries.

No, the Other Kind of Bank

2 Dead in 4 Vehicle Berks County MVA

At 0129 on December 28, 2021, Tanker 66, Air 66, Field 66 and an all-volunteer crew from Perkiomen Township Fire Company responded to the Perkiomen Creek bank in the 600 block of Gravel Pike (Route 29) in the township for a report of a vehicle in the creek. The vehicle was on the bank of the creek and a technical rescue was performed up the embankment. Thanks to the many mutual aid partners who were also dispatched including Skippack Fire Company and marine units from Collegeville Fire Company, Upper Salford Volunteer Fire Company and Jefferson Fire Company No. 1. Station 66 volunteers were in service for about two hours.

On December 15, 2021, units operated at a multi-vehicle MVA with entrapment in Berks County on Interstate 78 near the Route 61 interchange. Two people were killed in the crash which involved four vehicles. The driver of an empty school bus did not see traffic stopped in a construction zone and hit a car, causing it to become lodged beneath the bus, the Pennsylvania State Police said. The bus then hit another car, pushing it into a tractor-trailer, police said.

Units from Hamburg, Shoemakersville, Shartlesville, Schuylkill, Orwisburg, Schuylkill Valley, Mulhenburg and Western Berks operated for several hours.

Aspinwall Members Recognized for Their Service Just prior to the Aspinwall Volunteer Fire Department’s monthly meeting, on February 8, 2022, Allegheny County Emergency Services Chief Matthew Brown stopped by the Aspinwall VFD, on behalf of the Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald. Chief Brown presented Citations of Recognition to Lee Albacker, Nick Scheid and Gene Marsico, for their longtime, dedicated and continuing service to the Borough of Aspinwall.

Nick and Lee are former Chiefs and Gene is the current Chief. Together, they represent close to 150 years of service to the Borough of Aspinwall and surrounding municipalities.

Perkiomen Thanks Lower Frederick

In January, Perkiomen township Fire Company’s Engine 66, their primary frontline fire truck, was out of service with a mechanical issue. We would like to thank Lower Frederick Fire Company for allowing us to borrow Engine 52-1 (a 2000 Pierce Enforcer Pumper) to cover Engine 66 while the truck was down. As a small token of

appreciation our volunteers spent the night cleaning the truck inside and out. We would also like to thank Caddick Construction Company for providing us tow services to take Engine 66 to be serviced.

Donegal Extrication On February 7, 2022, Donegal crews and mutual aid responded to a call that came in as a triaxle accident with possible entrapment. First arriving units reported massive entrapment.

Additional companies were called for assistance in extricating the driver. Total time to extricate the driver was over an hour. Once in the care of mutual aid EMS, patient was airlifted to Level 1 trauma facility in Pittsburgh.

Obituary

Gratz’ Scott Dreher Scott E. Dreher, 55, of Gratz, passed away on January 4, 2022, at the Hershey Medical Center. Scott was born in Abilene, Texas, on December 30, 1966, a son of Ruth Ann Dreher and the late Palmer Dreher. Scott was President of Gratz Fire Company and was employed as a Foreman at Klinger Lumber Company for 33 years.

He was a member of St. Peters United Church of Christ, Lykens, President of the Gratz Fire Company, former second assistant Chief and a member of the Berrysburg Fire Company. He was a Youth Fellowship leader and Cub Scout leader. Scott enjoyed basketball, volleyball, golf, softball, camping, hiking, hunting, fishing, spending time with friends at their pool and day adventures to new places. Scott is survived by his wife of 31 years, Laurie Dreher, two sons, Scott (fiancé Kendra) Dreher, Pierce (fiancé Natalie) Dreher; sister, Stacey (Henry) Stehr and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by uncles, Larry Troutman and Paul Dreher, an aunt, Sandy Dreher, father-in-law, Larry Schnerr, grandparents, Paul and Ida Dreher and William and Grace Troutman.

Scott was a well liked, known and loved man. A service was held at the Valley Lighthouse in Lykens where fire apparatus were lined up with black drapery. Out front an American flag hung overhead in the cold January air from a Klinger Lumber truck. Inside after a visitation/viewing period a service was held remembering our brother Scott Dreher. Scott was that guy, the guy who was humble and kind and always had a smile and willing to help anyone. He will be missed.
