From the Editor’s Desk Dennis Whittam, Editor

Let me

Ramble This month I zeroed in on my monthly editorial after I finished having breakfast with 79 retired firefighters from the Fire Department of New York. I have been attending the monthly breakfast for several years and I look forward to receiving phone calls from my heroes like Firefighter John Maher-retired, Deputy Chief Joe DiBernardo-retired or Captain Lou Andrade-retired, asking if I am going to the breakfast. To some in the group, I am just a face that quietly sits down and enjoys breakfast. To others, I am the son of a firefighter they worked with, while to my table, I am a good listener, who is expected to be at breakfast, on time and with my camera in case that special Kodak moment arises. This group of heroes has made me part of their group and share their stories with me. What have I learned from them? I have learned that the basic principal of the fire service is still alive amongst this group of seasoned retired veterans. I have written about brotherhood before. It is a term that includes the women of the fire service, too. Even though all of these firefighters are long retired, the bond they had between themselves many years ago, is stronger than ever. As I age, I realize how precious life is. At the beginning of every breakfast, the group prays for our wounded and deceased veterans and the members of the FDNY who are ill. No one is forgotten.

I worry about the principal of brotherhood. At times I feel that this sacred belief is not as strong as it should be. Do the members of your department live and breathe this basic principal? Brotherhood is what keeps us safe when we leave the firehouse to go to a call. It brings us back safely to our families at the end of a stressful day. True brothers and sisters look out for one another all of the time. Are you there for your brothers and sisters when they need you? Being a firefighter is a lot more than wearing a shirt with a Maltese cross on it. A truly dedicated responder is upset when he or she misses a call that their brothers responded to without them. Only you can look into the mirror and answer whether or not you have the dedication and commitment to perform a service that is more than a job. I have learned from the Brooklyn Breakfast Group that firefighting is more than a job. To the people who make a difference, firefighting is a way of life. I hope when you hang up your coat for the last time that the stories about you will echo through the rooms of your firehouse and make people say what a great firefighter you must have been.

Propane Training in Albany

On May 7, 2014, 24 firefighters from the Albany area drilled to prepare themselves in the event of a propane emergency. Recently the risks associated with the transportation of combustible materials like propane and crude oil has been a major concern in the area. Firefighters received hands-on experience putting out multiple propane gas fires. At the end of June, nearly 175 firefighters and propane industry professionals joined forces at the New York State Fire Academy in Montour Falls to learn and share some vital propane safety information, response techniques and protocols which are critical to employ during emergencies. - Fire News photos by Tom Heffernan

Athens Truck Has Been Around and is Still … Truckin’ The Athens Volunteer Fire Department in Greene County has a very special multi-use ladder truck. Their 1985 Spartan LTI 75-foot ladder truck was originally in service with Beverley Hills (California) Fire Department. It was then purchased by the Catskill Fire Company and used for several years until the Athens Volunteer Fire Department purchased the truck in 2008. Athens has used this truck at many structure fires in their district and also responded to several mutual aid calls to neighboring company's. They refurbished the truck before it went into service. It looks showroom new and has won a few parade trophies as well. This is Athens’ fire department’s first ladder truck. - Fire News photo by John C. Miller

The Firehouse Kitchen Ray Cooney is heating up the airwaves with his hit show, Firehouse Kitchen. Besides being the host of a nationwide firefighter cooking show Ray is also a husband, proud father of three and a retired New York City firefighter. Ray’s path towards Firehouse Kitchen began in Richmond Hill, Queens. It was November 2003, and Ray and his fellow firefighters were responding to a massive fire. He was two-stories high and attempting to take a window. “I was the outside vent man. I was just trying to get the baby bars off the window, but I broke the window and I got a rush of heat in my face. It knocked me off the ladder.” Ray landed on his feet before collapsing to the ground, suffering compression fractures all down his spine. He needed multiple surgeries on his knees and ankles and eventually, a hip replacement. “I was in the ICU for, like, four days. I was intubated. Every day the firemen would come in and make fun of me … it was great.” Unfortunately, the tumble ultimately forced him to retire from the job he loved so dearly. In July of 2010, while recovering from one of his hip surgeries, he decided to use the down time as a chance to pursue his love of television and screenwriting. With help from his nephew, a film student graduate, they wrote their first screenplay. Thus, the beginning of Smoke Eater Films. Since then, Ray has created over 15 screenplays and wrote nine television shows. Ray’s most recent project, Firehouse Kitchen, blends two aspects of Ray’s life. One, it satisfies his love of film and all things fire department and, two, it gives him the ability to raise money for the Islip Town Fire Museum and the different burn centers in New York. Firehouse Kitchen debuted in April on WNYC-TV, and went national in May. Ray truly enjoys visiting his fellow firefighters in their Firehouse Kitchens. Be sure to check your local listings and tune into Firehouse Kitchen each week for delicious recipes, safety tips and stories of heroism. GLOBE AND 3M DONATE $20,000 TO TERRY FARRELL FIREFIGHTER FUND Corporate Supporters Raise Funds at FDIC 2014

Globe Manufacturing Company kicked off its partnership with the Terry Farrell Firefighter Fund at FDIC 2014, the nation’s largest firefighter training conference and exhibition held in indianapolis in April. With its supplier partner, 3M, Globe invited attendees to try its latest turnout gear on the Globe Firefighter Athletic Circuit and committed to make a $10 donation to the Terry Farrell Firefighter Fund in each firefighter’s name. 3M generously matched each donation. In total, Globe and 3M donated $20,000 to the fund. Terry Farrell was a father, a husband, a brother, and a dedicated firefighter who lost his life on September 11, 2001, during the WTC attack. Among the 343 heroes who died that day, Farrell was in Tower Two when it collapsed. A decorated member of Rescue 4/FDNY and chief of the Dix Hills Volunteer Fire Department, Terry was a devoted firefighter who embodied the spirit of courage and giving. The Terry Farrell Firefighter Fund was established in his memory to assist firefighters and families across the nation with financial, educational and medical support, and to provide equipment donations for fire departments in need. “We believe in the mission of the Terry Farrell Firefighter Fund and have welcomed them into the Globe family,” said Rob Freese, senior vice president of marketing at Globe Manufacturing Company. “Globe has always given back to the fire service and we are delighted to be able to help firefighters and departments through this worthy

cause and hard working group of volunteers.” The Terry Farrell Firefighter Fund not only had a booth at FDIC 2014, but also manned the Globe booth with volunteers from chapters across the country in order to raise awareness for the fund and fundraising activities by Globe and 3M. “The Terry Fund has been given this great opportunity to partner with Globe. Globe not only makes some of the best and most innovative fire gear on the market today but also strongly supports the fire service through its direct assistance to the Terry Fund,” said Brian Farrell, chairman of the Terry Farrell Firefighter Fund and brother of Terry Farrell. “Firefighters across America will directly benefit from the strong financial support the Fund receives from Globe.” Also at FDIC, Globe unveiled new Terry Farrell commemorative turnout gear and will donate a portion of the proceeds from every suit sold to the Terry Farrell Firefighter Fund. 3M will also match Globe’s donation for every suit sold. “3M is thrilled to partner with Globe in supporting a great foundation like the Terry Farrell Firefighter Fund,” said Jennifer L. Sickmann, global segment marketing manager for 3M. “The engagement from firefighters at the FDIC event was outstanding.”

Responding firefighters safely evacuated the building and turned off the meters

stopping the leaking gas. Village of Fishkill Building Inspector Thomas Vantine declared the apartments uninhabitable until repairs could be made. It is believed that the weight of the snow from a recent storm contributed to the collapse of the awning. No injuries were reported but three families were displaced by the incident. Village of Fishkill Police Department and Central Hudson Gas & Electric repair crews responded to the scene. -Fire News photo by Kevin Barry

Vargas Honored at FDIC Congratulations to Lt. Edward Vargas, from Vischers Ferry Fire Department, on being the recipient of FireRescue’s Company Officer of the Year Award. Ed received the award while at FDIC this year. Ed was nominated by Lt. Liz Grebe also from Vischers Ferry FD. When asked why she nominated Ed for the award she stated, “I nominated Ed because he is an allaround great person, and because of his fierce dedication to training, safety, and to all of his personnel.” Her nomination letter shared nothing but praises for her mentor, “Ed is present for every work detail, Company function, District function, etc. He selflessly donates his free time to help his fire family with anything in their firematic, work, or personal lives, without a second thought. He encourages acceptance of all firefighters and a welcoming environment to assist recruitment, retention and morale. Ed takes everything seriously, but keeps the job and training fun. He is deeply passionate about the fire service, like no one else I’ve ever met. Ed works to instill this passion in his personnel, creating a sense of value in any and all of even the most tedious, routine tasks. He never assigns a task with which he is not willing to help. Ed always, always, always works alongside his crew, rather than delegating and stepping back. He works with newer and senior line officers to be the best leaders possible, through effective communication and an exemplary demeanor at all times. This behavior and communication continues through his public face; whether on calls,

social media, out in public in no way affiliated with the firehouse, Ed is an exemplary citizen. He is respectful towards everyone, would jump up to help a stranger, and is just overall an excellent representation of the traditional view of a firefighter as a ‘hometown hero.’ Ed is not afraid to ‘make waves’ by standing up for what is just and true, even if it is not the most popular decision or does not mesh with the accepted standard of, ‘Well, we've always done it that

way.’ Through this behavior, he has brought about many positive changes to our company’s way of life, and encouraged better attendance than we’ve seen in recent years.” (Above): Ed Vargas and Liz Grebe proudly displaying the award Ed received at FDIC. -Fire News photo by Lori Washburn
