The Firehouse Table It was 1959 when I sat at my first firehouse table. I was a young kid who stopped by the quarters of Engine 233 in Brooklyn. The table was a long wooden table that was covered with black “battleship linoleum.” I remember having my first cup of tea at that table, made with sugar and evaporated milk. I also remember the conversation that was going on. The members were talking about a cartoonist named Ham Fisher. Ham was known for creating the comic strip Joe Palooka. Ironically he was a buff at a Brooklyn company. Before Ham took his life in his Brooklyn studio, he painted a scene of Joe Palooka on the kitchen wall of his favorite firehouse. Unfortunately, the scene was painted over by accident when a probationary firefighter was asked to paint the kitchen and painted over the last picture that Ham Fisher drew. The members of Engine 233 commented on and on about the mistake that was made. Yes, this was the first conversation I listened to at a firehouse table.

As I travel throughout the country and stop by local firehouses, I find that the tables have changed in appearance — some are works of art. One thing appears to have remained the same. The stories in every firehouse kitchen deal with a multitude of topics. The kitchen table is still where we discuss both good and bad calls, training, family, and where we share personal problems, and solve all of the problems of the world. Unfortunately there are times we sit at the table and stare into our coffee and never say a word. These are the times that we probably want to forget about. Maybe it was a fatal call, or possibly we suddenly lost a member who was loved by everyone. Sooner or later someone says something about that member and we all start to smile and add our own memories. Yes the kitchen table can be a sacred place where we lessen the effects of post traumatic stress. Numerous times members just open up to one another and share what is on their mind. When they leave, the remaining members will look at one another and say, “what are we going to do?”

Regardless of the location, the firehouse kitchen is a sacred place. Whether it is a round table, a long rectangular table, a couch and coffee table, this is where firefighters bond with one another and learn about their brothers and sisters. It is where we help one another cope with everyday situations. The next time you sit at your kitchen table, listen and learn. When my wife asks where I am off to, I tell her I am going for coffee at the “Table of Knowledge.” She knows what I mean and smiles. What is better than good company, good conversation, and the lasting friendship of the firehouse table.

FDNY, NATIONAL FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS FOUNDATION INAUGURAL NATIONAL STAIR CLIMB TO BE HELD AT CITI FIELD, PUBLIC INVITED TO PARTICIPATE National Fire Prevention Week this October will culminate with the National Stair Climb, an event honoring firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice. FDNY Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro joined leaders from the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF), United Technologies Corporation (UTC), Kidde Fire Safety, and loved ones of fallen firefighters to announce the event at FDNY Firehouse Ladder 20 and Division 1 on Lafayette Street. Seven members of this station died on 9/11. Previous stair climbs have focused solely on the 343 members of the FDNY who perished on 9/11. The National Stair Climb, scheduled for October 10 at Citi Field, will expand the scope of this tradition to remember all of America’s fallen firefighters, and is the first event of its kind to take place in New York City with the support of the FDNY. “Every day, here in New York City and across the country, firefighters go into harms way, through every obstacle and climbing every step needed to accomplish their life-saving mission,” said FDNY Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro. “The FDNY is proud to take part in this fitting tribute to every firefighter who has made the supreme sacrifice and to lend our support to the families they left behind.”

Participants will climb 2,200 steps in Citi Field. These steps symbolize the 110 stories of the World Trade Center Towers — the ascent that FDNY firefighters took on September 11, 2001 — and the ultimate sacrifice that 343 first responders made that day. It also is a journey of hope, raising funds to help programs for surviving family members of firefighters across the country. Approximately 100 firefighters die in the line of duty each year in the U.S. “The National Stair Climb is a tremendous way to honor all firefighters from across our country who have died in the line of duty,” said Chief Ronald J. Siarnicki, executive director of the NFFF. “This climb is also a way to let the families know the legacies of their loved ones are remembered by so many.”

The first 9/11 stair climb took place in Denver in 2005 when five Colorado firefighters gathered at a high-rise to climb 110 flights of stairs in memory of their 343 FDNY brothers.

In 2010, they partnered with the NFFF to hold a series of climbs around the country. The National Stair Climb is open to the public and to all ages. Proceeds will benefit the FDNY Counseling Services Unit and the NFFF. “We are proud to partner with the FDNY and NFFF to help support the launch of this unique tradition in New York City,” said Jim Ward, president, Kidde Fire Safety, a global leader of residential fire safety products and sponsor. Kidde is a part of UTC, the climb’s presenting sponsor. “Whenever there’s a call for help our nation’s firefighters respond without hesitation. They put their lives on the line every day. The funds raised from this climb will help ensure that survivors of the fallen will continue to receive outstanding assistance as they navigate through challenging times.”

Participants will receive a name badge honoring or in memory of the firefighter for whom they have chosen to climb and an event t-shirt. Early registration is $35 until August 31. For more information and to register, visit www.nationalstairclimb.org.

Passaic 5-Alarmer

On May 3, 2015, the Passaic Fire Department responded to a five-alarm fire, which displaced approximately 80 people. The fire was located only a couple blocks from the Eastside firehouse and companies arrived on the scene within minutes to find heavy fire involving a 21/2 story frame church and a three-story frame mutli-family. Battalion Chief Szczygiel transmitted the second and third alarms upon arrival

and requested companies to bring in water.

Although an interior attack was attempted, all members were ordered out of the buildings five minutes after arrival. With fire spreading to two single-story garages in the rear and other homes severely threatened, a fourth alarm was sounded and a request was made to the Passaic Valley Water Department to boost pressure as two tower ladders, two ladder pipes, a deck

gun along with multiple handlines and ground monitors were put into operation. With the exposures covered, companies started making some progress darkening down the main body of fire, and a fifth alarm was transmitted for manpower. Companies remained on the scene throughout the night and into the next day.

2-Alarmer in Highland Terrace

On June 3, 2015, the Orange Fire Department responded to Highland Terrace for a reported structure fire. Companies arrived to a heavy fire and quickly struck a second alarm. Onscene companies faced water problems, which lead to a full evacuation and defensive operations. Aberdeen Garden Apartment Blaze

Fire companies in Aberdeen Township, as well as mutual aid from surrounding areas, responded to a working fire in the Ken Gardens Apartments on May 22, 2015. Located in the Cliffwood Beach section of town, the garden-style apartment complex suffered a loss of 10-12 units in the fire. Several aerial streams were established with a water supply stretched down the road. Reports indicated an initial request for a pipeline due to water supply issues. Mutual aid

responded from North Centerville (Hazlet), Union Beach, Matawan, Aberdeen, Naval Weapons Station Earle, Cheesequake (Old Bridge), Keyport, and Middletown. Displaced families were assisted at the scene and the NJ EMS Task Force Mobile Ambulance Bus (MAB 6) assisted with rehab.

Cover Story

Magnolia 2-Alarmer Destroys Home

On May 31, 2015, fire heavily damaged a 2-1/2 story occupied dwelling on Ashland Avenue in Magnolia Boro, Camden County.

First arriving units were met with heavy fire venting from the rear of the house. The fire eventually spread thru the walls and into the attic. Fire crews initially called to the scene came from Magnolia, Lawnside, Cherry Hill, Hi-Nella and Runnemede. A second alarm

was sounded bringing Gloucester Township and Voorhees units.

High temperatures and humidity took a toll on the firefighters and additional BLS units were summoned. The fire was placed under control in just over an hour by Magnolia Fire Chief Paul Wolf.

Unfortunately, the home was destroyed and the family displaced.

Not Exactly What Dumping the Load Means

On June 17, 2015, members of the Hackensack 2nd Platoon responded to Temple Avenue for a truck driver trapped after the tailgate malfunctioned when dumping a load of stone. Members of Rescue 1, Ladder 1 and Engine 5 secured the truck with struts before removing the driver with Ladder 1's aerial.

Truck Overturn

The volunteer fire companies of Richland (Station 12-1), East Vineland (Station 12-2) along with Squad 12-9 responded on May 29, 2015, to Cumberland Road just past the intersection of Harding Highway (U.S. Route 40) for an overturned vehicle. Richland Chief Anthony Monfredo, Jr., arrived and established command and

reported the overturned vehicle was a tractor-trailer on its side with no entrapment but did have a fuel leak. Just an Overturn in Bloomfield

Recently, the Bloomfield Fire Department received a call for a rollover with possible fire on West Passaic Avenue. Engine 3 and Truck 1 were assigned. Truck 1 arrived to find that they had an overturned vehicle with no entrapment, no injuries, and no fire.

Multiple Calls, Different MVAs on GSP

On May 30, 2015, Car 30 received a call on his personal cell reporting a major MVA with rollover and entrapment on the Garden State Parkway North. Truck 1 and Engine 4 also responded. Upon arrival command reported multiple parties were trapped and requested more BLS ambulances. After flipping from the fast lane to the slow lane a van had rolled and wrapped itself around live wires, which required PSE&G to respond.

Complicating matters was a second MVA in the southbound lanes, which after some confusion turned out to be minor in nature. Three were transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital. - Fire News photos by Mark Rosetti

Palmyra Blaze

Recently, Task Force 801 was dispatched to 500 block of Arch Street in Palmyra. Units arrived to find fire throughout the second floor.

Companies from Palmyra, Riverton, Cinnaminson, Delran and Maple Shade placed the fire under control in under 30 minutes.

The City of Somers Point Fire Department responded to Bay and New Jersey Avenues on June 6, 2015, to assist the City’s EMS with a fall victim. The victim was on the roof at the rear of a structure.

Firefighters assisted EMS with a ground ladder and Stokes rescue basket to remove the victim from the roof. After EMS bundled the victim, he was transported to the hospital. Somers Point Police were investigating the incident.

Car Fire in Somers Point The City of Somers Point Volunteer Fire Department responded to the Somers Point Shopping Center on Bethel Road on June 8, 2015, for a report of a car fire. Fire Company #2 Assistant Chief Michael Sweeney arrived and established command and reported a fire in the engine compartment of a BMW. Firefighters pulled two lines and confined the fire to the engine compartment.

2-Car/1-MC MVA Injures 2 On April 13, 2015, Blackwood Rescue 84, Gloucester Township EMS and Virtua Medics were dispatched to the area of Blackwood Clementon and Millbridge Road for a motor vehicle accident. Initial reports indicated a three-vehicle accident involving a motorcycle. Rescue 84 and Engine 841’s crews assisted in packaging the motorcycle’s driver and passenger, who were taken to the hospital. Rescue 84 remained on location for more then three hours assisting Gloucester Township Police with lighting as they investigated the incident.

Somers Point MVA into Structure

The City of Somers Point Volunteer Fire Department responded to 5th Street on June 13, 2015, for a report of a vehicle into a structure.

Firefighters arrived to find a vehicle into a structure with the A side of the structure collapsed. Somers Point Chief of Department Frank Denan established command with Assistant Chief Mike Sweeney on operations. Command, seeing this was going to be a prolonged oper-

ation, requested the Scullville Volunteer Fire Company for station coverage. Operations had the front of the structure shored, then the vehicle was removed. 1 Dead, 1 Saved from Floodwaters

On June 15, 2015, following heavy rains, two workers inspecting a departments from all over Passaic and Bergan counties and Northern bridge in Passaic were swept away. Bystanders were able to pull one New Jersey assisted in the search. Wood Ridge Memorial Service

On May 20, 2015, the Wood Ridge Fire Department held its Annual Memorial Service at their firehouse on Humboldt Street. Master of Ceremonies was Exempts President Thomas Bischoff, Jr., who read the names of the 124 members of the Wood Ridge Exempts Association who have answered their last call, and who have had

their name placed on the memorial. During the reading of the names, each member of the department in attendance placed a white carnation on the base of the monument in honor of each past firefighter.

James’ Journey to Recovery

A gala benefit for James Sear, the six-year-old son of Cardiff Volunteer Fire Company Assistant Chief Steve Sear, whose grandfather is the past-Deputy Chief of the Egg Harbor Township Volunteer Fire Department, was held on June 20, 2015, at the Charles Maxwell Hall adjacent to the Farmington Volunteer Fire Company. A beef-and-beer was held to help offset the medical costs for James who recently had three strokes. There was also a Chinese auction, door prizes, and much more. All of the surrounding fire

companies turned out for the event, as did many politicians, fire school instructors, police and local celebrities. Radio Station KOOL 98.3 FM DJ David Allen Pratt donated his time to MC the event. Hasbrouck Heights Barbecue

On June 3, 2015, Engine One in Hasbrouck Heights welcomed company and department members and their families to the Eighth Annual Engine One Barbecue at the firehouse. The barbecue has become an anticipated event every summer and was attended by over 40 department and honorary members and their families.

Organized by Engine One Firefighter Justin Watrel and under the direction of grillmaster/First Assistant Chief Angelo Roccamo, and with the assistance of Lieutenant Bernie Valente and former-Lieutenant Tim Moots, members and guests enjoyed hamburgers, hot dogs, Italian sausage, baked beans, potato salad and a firefighter barbecue favorite, homemade baked ziti.

Liberty Corner Takes First Place at Tri-County Comp The annual Tri-County Firematics competition was hosted by the Stirling Volunteer Fire Company on June 13, 2015, at their firehouse. Chairing this event were Stirling’s Deputy Chief Alex Gallo and Firefighters John Melluso, Nick Pepe and Joseph Cerami. More than 200 firefighters and their families from 10 volunteer fire departments attended this test of precision, skills, and speed. Participating fire companies were Basking Ridge, Bernardsville, Chatham Borough, Far Hills, Green Village, Liberty Corner, Martinsville, New Vernon, and Peapack-Gladstone. The competition consists of four events, three which remain the same each year plus a new special event created by the host fire department, which changes every year. Each team consists of five firefighters. The overall winners of the competition were: 1st Place: Liberty Corner Fire Company; 2nd: Chatham Borough Fire Company; 3rd: Bernardsville Fire Company. The winner of the special event was the Basking Ridge Fire Company.

Dorothy Annual B-B-Q Kicks Off Summer

It’s officially summer as of June 7, 2015, because that’s when the Dorothy Volunteer Fire Company in Weymouth Township, Atlantic County held its 58th Annual Chicken Bar-B-Q at their station on Tuckahoe Road. The members began preparing at 0430 to cook the

2,250 chicken halves. A fun filled day followed with corn-on-thecob, clams, hot dogs, games for the kids, hay rides, cake sale, and a special visit from Smokey Bear.

Cooking with Friends

Making my way into Red Hook, Brooklyn is always fun. Fighting the traffic is the highlight of the journey. At the end of this journey, awaited a great reward — Friends of Firefighters. FoF is a firefighter charity that was created after the attacks on 9/11. Its quarters are actually located inside an old firehouse — the original Engine 202, Ladder 101. “It is a sanctuary for New York City firefighters,” said Nancy Carbone (one of the charity’s founders). When I arrived, I was greeted by Tony Catapano and Pete Calascinoe, both retired from Engine 202.

“What are we cooking today?” I asked my two Italian friends. They said we are going to make chicken oregenata and pasta insalata. “Pasta insalata?”

I asked. “What’s that?”

Pasta insalata is a delicious pasta salad served room temperature with uncooked sauce. They were surprised that I never heard of it, knowing my history of being married to an Italian woman. As we were preparing the food, we spoke of the old days in the fire department. Tony, being a 42-year veteran of the FDNY, made me feel like I was in the kitchen again cooking with the senior men. It was comical cooking with these guys. They were stepping on each other’s words, questioning each other on what to put in the recipe and then agreeing on what to and not to add. It was like watching an old, married, Italian couple!

One thing they were both passionate about was FoF. They both have been involved almost from its conception. FoF provides counseling, support and health services, such as yoga, acupuncture, etc., to the FDNY. This is a dynamite cause and is why I am getting involved. Being a 9/11 firefighter myself, this charity really hit home. This is why the next season of Firehouse Kitchen will be aiding in the raising of funds for FoF. PASTA INSALATA Large can of whole tomatoes Garlic Cloves Olive Oil Basil Parsley Romano Cheese 1 lb. of penne pasta Boil water for pasta. When water boils, place uncooked pasta in pot and cook, stirring occasionally. While that is cooking, pour can of tomatoes into large mixing bowl and squish with hands. Press out garlic cloves and add to taste. Mix 1/3 cup of olive oil, chopped basil and parley to the sauce and garlic mix. Mix together and add Romano cheese to taste. Set aside tomato sauce and let sit for approximately 20 minutes.

Strain pasta when cooked. Pour tomato dressing over pasta and enjoy.

Millville’s Hess Retires The City of Millville Fire Department’s Chief Kurt Hess retired with a gala celebration held for him at the City of Millville fire station on May 29, 2015.

Chief Hess joined the Millville Fire Department as a reserve firefighter in June 1975, following in his father’s footsteps. In June 1976 he was voted into the regular membership of the department. In April of 1977, he was appointed as an apparatus driver. In April 1984, he was appointed Lieutenant and quickly rose through the officer ranks over the next few years and was appointed Deputy Chief in 1988. In October 1998, he was elected volunteer Chief of Department by the membership.

In December 2001, the City of Millville decided it was time for a career chief to run the fire department. Chief Hess was sworn in as a full-time chief and hit the ground running to move the fire department forward.

The Chief has obtained numerous upgrades for the department, replacing aging equipment, and renovating and reconfiguring the firehouse. During his tenure, he doubled the size of the career staff, lowering the responses needed from the volunteer staff to prevent burnout.

Chief Hess has made the department’s meeting room an approved training facility certified by the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety. This required technology upgrades to suit the needs of educating firefighters in today's times. Recently Chief Hess has

sought another set of building renovations that will make the classroom and second floor handicap accessible.

Hess is a graduate of Millville High School Class (1971) and West Virginia’s Wesleyan College in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education. He was hired by the City of Bridgeton Fire Department (December 1978 to December 2001).

He is married to Katherine K. Hess and they have three children; Sara, Alexander and Caroline. In his spare time, he enjoyed attending Alexander’s football games in high school and college, and the same with Caroline’s field hockey games. He is an avid fisherman, and takes pleasure in riding his PWC on the Maurice River.

His uncle, Fred Reichsteiner, taught him the craft of tinsmith. Chief Hess mainly reproduces products from the American Revolutionary War, i.e. canteens, lamps, and fife cases. He supplies the G. Gedney Godwin Company Inc., of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, which has furnished major motion pictures. Most notably, some of his products have been used in the movies The Last of the Mohicans, and The Patriot.

Some of Chief Hess’ products can be found in the Fort Pitt Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and being used by reenactors of the Revolutionary War in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Elizabeth FFs Recognized for Community Service Elizabeth Firefighters FMBA Local 9 was a recipient of the Community Service Award by Missionaries on a Mission, for community involvement, outstanding leadership and outstanding achievements. The award was presented by the President Missionary Cerise Simmons at the Missionaries on a Mission Block Party and Community Awareness Day held on June 20, 2015. Local 9 Vice President David Bialas was on hand to accept the award on behalf of the organization. Missionaries on a Mission is a faith based organization that focuses on charity work in Elizabeth and surrounding areas in the county. This past year, FMBA Local 9 worked with Missionaries on a Mission on Thanksgiving food baskets with a donation of turkeys and hams, and a Holiday Bicycle Giveaway in honor of late Elizabeth Police Department Det. 2nd Annual Halbruner Surf Fishing Fundraiser

The City of Cape May Volunteer Fire Department presented a check to Kirby Reed from The American Cancer Society from money raised at the 2nd annual David Halbruner Fishing Tournament. The event raised $4000 for a donation in Lt. Halbruner’s name. The three-day event is held on the cape beaches from Higbee’s Beach Rocks to Poverty Beach in Cape May. The top three striped bass are the winners. An entry donation of $50 allows anglers to fish, they are given a tournament t-shirt and an after party beef-and-beer, where prizes are awarded. The after party is also open to the public for a $25 donation.

The event was held on June 4, 2015. David was a Cape May native who, like many, enjoyed fishing for striped bass. David started as a

volunteer firefighter, was hired to the career department and eventually became a career City of Cape May Fire Department Lieutenant.

David was diagnosed with cancer after over 30 years of service to the City of Cape May. He worked until his illness forced him to stop.

David, sadly, never made it to retirement. Lt. Halbruner passed away July 29, 2010, after a long battle. Members of the fire department decided to have a memorial striper fishing tournament to honor David and his love for fishing, and also for cancer research. All of the proceeds raised from the tournament are donated to The American Cancer Society in Lt. Halbruner’s name.

Linden Rescue Training

The Linden Fire Department has recently completed the final stage of a four-part Technical Rescue Training class for 28 members of the department, which was made possible through a $92,000 FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant. The technical training consisted of three disciplines: high angle rope rescue, confined space rescue, and trench rescue. Each stage of the training was a one-week class held at the Linden Fire Department’s training classroom and the Union County Fire Academy and taught by START Rescue Training. The 28 participants were the newest members of the department. Linden Fire Chief Joseph Dooley stated, “I truly believe that this training places the Linden Fire Department at a higher level of preparedness and we are better able to meet the challenges our profession faces.”
