Winter Woes Winter creates problems for first responders. You expected to perform flawlessly. I followed a few departments this month and was amazed how well departments performed flawlessly throughout the frigid Northeast.

Firefighters encrusted in ice as they battle and contain flames is nothing new. Do a search on Google Images for "Ice Covered Firefighters" and you will see that battling fires under adverse conditions is nothing new to us.

Despite horrendous weather conditions, responders throughout the country never let the weather stand in their way of doing a spectacular job to save John Q. Public. Firefighters in Brooklyn recently battled a seven alarm wind driven, below-freezing, blaze. The blaze was brought under control, but not before firefighters, equipment and the community was encrusted in ice. Rather than complaining, a firefighter stated that the fire could have been worse; “at least the wind was at our backs.” It is this type of attitude that makes all first responders special.

EMTs have the same problem. As soon as the first snowflake falls, they are faced with the dangers of traveling down unplowed roads, carrying patients over snow banks and down icy walkways. You do what you do because you care about the people whose lives you are saving. A few months ago, Buffalo, New York, was pounded by lake-effect snow.

Responders from all over the state left their homes to help their brothers and sisters get through the storm. Snowmobiles, trucks and, in the end brute strength, was used to carry people to safety. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to excellence in the emergency services.

I am amazed as I drive through my community and see fire hydrants covered with ice and snow, many not even visible. It is an impossible task for firefighters to travel through a community to dig out fire hydrants, especially during the time of an alarm. The community must be made aware that we need their help to make sure we can help them in time of need. Many junior firefighters go out and work hard to clear hydrants, but they cannot be expected to maintain and keep the snow away. Since most schools are closed during storms, fire departments should encourage schools to give community service credit to students who clear away the snow around the fire hydrants on the streets where the students live. They must look after the hydrant as plows clear away the snow on the street and push in back on the hydrants. Winter creates many problems for first responders. Overcoming these problems is a task that the community must participate in.

Networking: a Dying Art in the Fire Service

By Steve Austin Could a tried and true practice of learning and sharing be a thing of the past in the fire service?

If you are reading this article and a first thought is that networking has something to do with the Wi-Fi connection in your home you probably should read on.

Networking in the boomer generation is a preferred method of passing knowledge along in the fire service. Maybe the staple of past generations isn’t so much today.

The type of networking I am referring to is building personal relationships with others in the fire service that can be helpful to your career and potentially to the person you are interacting with.

I began thinking about this subject in a conversation with the late Harvey Eisner following the Baltimore Firehouse Expo last summer, only a couple months before he died. Harvey was and will always be “Firehouse.” He had a vast knowledge of the fire service, knew what kind of firefighters attended trade shows and why they came.

Tradeshow attendance in the fire industry has been tailing off for some time. The internet has a lot to do with this because it isn’t as necessary to attend shows to learn about new products. Also (sadly) there may not be the interest in some cases as there once was to hear speakers.

I suggested to Harvey an additional reason might be the fact that millenniums may not understand nor appreciate how to develop networking relationships with peers and leaders. In the past, fire trade shows were the place where people met face to face and often exchanged contact information and more. Part of the demise may be due to a different understanding of what networking is and what it can do for a person’s career.

Being connected electronically is not the same thing as having a level of trust with someone who you have known and interacted with for years. Alabama Football Coach Nick Saban who has won four national titles doesn’t text and has no e-mail address. In a recent article by Ben Cohen in The Wall Street Journal, Coach Saban was quoted, “If you can’t see someone face-to-face and look them in the eye the next best thing is to call somebody and have a conversation. It’s a lost art today.”

As someone who does text, Tweets and has a Facebook account along with running a couple websites, I don’t know that I would go as far as Coach Saban. I do think, however, that an over reliance on electronic communication may be diminishing the understanding of interpersonal relationships. Building a network is done the old fashioned way by seeking out and even waiting in line if necessary to speak with someone who has the information and the contacts needed to help you become a better member of the fire service.

That’s done at fire shows and training opportunities. Arriving home with a stack of business cards with notes scribbled on the back is the beginning of developing relationships that could last a lifetime. Using social media and texting can enhance that experience but it can never replace true networking.

I’m often asked how I know so many fire service people. I began

networking when there were no cell phones and the internet hadn’t been invented, so the only option was to get out there and shake some hands. It’s not a bad thing. The next time you are at a fire show try leaving your phone in your pocket for a while. You might be surprised who you meet.

On January 23, 2015, the Edgewater Fire Department responded to Russell Avenue for a reported fire. Companies arrived to find smoke in an apartment where plumbing work had recently taken place. As time progressed, fire in the walls extended vertically to apartments above as well as a common cockloft. Facing water problems, additional alarm levels were called and extensive mutual aid responded. Once the fire was ventilated, cold temperatures and Hudson River wind conditions aggressively spread the fire through the building. The building, an E-shaped 1000 x 200-foot complex containing 260 apartments, was rapidly consumed. Extensive mutual aid operated with exterior attack took place through the next day. There were no injuries during this incident.

Nice Containment at Paterson 2-Alarmer

On January 14, 2015, the Paterson Fire Department was dispatched to Madison Avenue for a building fire in a large, unoccupied, 2-1/2 story frame dwelling. Companies immediately went to work stretching several handlines into the building to attack the fire, which had extended into the attic. Electrical wires in front of the building made it almost impossible to use aerial devices forcing Ladder 3 to go to the roof via an extension ladder for ventilation. As

soon as the roof was open heavy smoke and then fire issued from the vent hole as interior companies continued to push into the attic cautiously due to reported holes in the floor. A second alarm was requested by Deputy 1 for manpower and relief due to temperatures in the low teens. Firefighters were able to keep the fire to the original building despite both exposures being only feet away.

Blairstown Blaze

Firefighters responded to a structure fire on Hope Road in Blairstown on January 3, 2015. The building was fully involved when firefighters arrived. Responding departments were Blairstown, Hope, Stillwater, Fredon, Green, Allamuchy, Knowlton and Mountain Lakes.

Ice, Wind, Collapse Make a Difficult 3-Alarmer

On January 7, 2015, Warren County Communications started to get phone calls reporting smoke from a house on Jefferson Street. First arriving units found smoke coming from the basement and stretched a line and called a second alarm. The crews were quickly removed as conditions rapidly deteriorated with some of the first floor collapsing and heavy wind-driven smoke making visibility poor; temperatures were in the single digits. Crews tried one more time to make a push into the basement but were quickly forced out and command ordered a defensive attack as a third alarm was

struck and several master streams and ladder pipes were put into operation. Two ladders froze up and had to be taken out of service.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries. Units assisting: Tri-County, Independence Twp., Washington Boro, Allamuchy Twp., Mansfield Twp., Mountain Lake, Franklin Twp., Budd Lake, Schooleys Mountain, Netcong, Roxbury Twp., Teaneck (Bergen) de-icing unit.

Explosion at EHT-PW Yard The Bargaintown Volunteer Fire Company from the Egg Harbor Township Fire Department in Atlantic County responded on January 15, 2015, for a report of an explosion on Mill Road in the vicinity of the township’s public works yard.

Bargaintown Lt. Roy Merrill, responding to the station, also on Mill Road, reported a large fire in the public works yard with numerous exposures. Bargaintown Chief Eugene Sharpe arrived and established command and reported the fire to be in a jitney, a public transportation vehicle. One water tender and two engines were used to combat the fire, and the cause was under investigation by EHT Police and the EHT Fire Investigator.

Difficult Blaze in Belleville

On January 11, 2015, the Belleville Fire Department responded to a house fire on Floyd Street. On arrival companies found a working fire in the attic of a 2-1/2 story frame dwelling. An interior attack commenced but the attic became untenable and fire was also showing on the second floor in the rear, forcing command to pull all firefighters. After it appeared the main body of fire was knocked down,

companies re-entered the building but the fire was in the walls and in numerous voids in the attic and command was forced to pull everyone out again. After hitting the fire with numerous handlines, a deck gun and a ladder pipe, companies finally got the upper hand and went back in to complete extinguishment.

Structure Fire in Middletown

On January 11, 2015, the Middletown Township Fire Department was dispatched to a smoke condition in a 2-1/2 story house on Southview Terrace South in the Old Village section of the township.

Approximately 70 firefighters from five companies (Old Village, Middletown, Belford Independent, Belford Engine, and Community), under the command of Department Chief Rick Hibell, responded to the scene. First Assistant Fire Chief Tony Citarella confirmed a working structure fire in the second floor master bedroom. All the residents had evacuated. The fire extended

from the master bedroom through the second floor and into the attic before being extinguished. Also assisting on the scene were the Middletown Township Fire Department Air Support Unit and the Fairview and Middletown First Aid Squads.

On January 30, 2015, the City of Margate Fire Department was alerted for a working structure fire on the 100 block of North Lancaster Avenue. Margate’s Quint 24 arrived and reported flames showing from the Bravo side of a structure and requested a second alarm, bringing mutual aid from the Cities of Longport and Ventnor. Firefighters made quick work of the fire.

CONTINENTAL FIRE & SAFETY, INC. On January 19, 2015, just before lunch, firefighters from Budd Lake and Flanders were dispatched to Camp Pulaski Road for a car fire. Engine 59 quickly stretched their bumper line and started to knock down the fire and kept it from spreading to the house. The homeowner was transported to a local hospital with chest discomfort. Sadly, the newly restored Chevrolet El Camino was destroyed.

Quick Work at Apt. House Fire

On January 19, 2015, Station 84 was dispatched as part of Task Force 821 (Chews Landing) for a reported fire in the La Cascata Apartments. FM 82 arrived to find a two-story, middle-of-the-row with heavy smoke showing and ordered Engine 822 to stretch an attack line to the second floor. Ladder 84 arrived as the first-due truck and split its crew, sending the interior team in to open the

walls and ceilings and the OV man to the C side of the building.

Engine 841 pumped Engine 822’s hydrant and sent its crew forward to pull a backup line. Interior crews found fire in the rear of the second floor extending into the walls and ceiling. Crews knocked down the fire and placed it under control.

Rutherford 3-Alarmer

Early on January 14, 2015, the Rutherford Fire Department responded to an automatic fire alarm in a two-story building housing a cafe on the first floor and offices above. Companies forced entry and started an interior attack however the fire had gained too much headway and with conditions rapidly deteriorating all members were ordered out. With heavy fire on both floors in the rear, the fire made its way into the cockloft and broke through the roof, which eventually collapsed. The fire went to three alarms with numerous mutual aid companies assisting.

Cigar Store Fire in Middletown

On January 19, 2015, the Middletown Township Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at the Cigar Lounge in Campbell’s Junction. Approximately 60 firefighters from four companies of the Middletown Township Fire Department (Belford Independent, Belford Engine, Port Monmouth and Community), under the command of Department Chief Rick Hibell, responded to

the scene. The Main Street building was unoccupied at the time.

Assisting on the scene were the Middletown Township Fire Department’s Air Support and Fire Police units. Middletown EMS units stood by during the incident.

Fatality at Paterson Blaze On January 18, 2015, the Paterson Fire Department responded to Gould Avenue for a possible fire. On arrival of the 1st Battalion chief he reported smoke showing from the roof of a 2-1/2 story frame dwelling. Companies found heavy fire in the attic and an interior attack was started. One victim was removed in serious condition during the primary search and transported to the hospital. With several lines operating on the interior, L-1 vented the roof, and, as heavy fire vented out of the B and D sides of the attic, exterior lines were put into service to successfully protect the exposures. After the fire was knocked down, interior crews located another victim deceased in the attic. A second alarm was transmitted for manpower.

Somers Point Pickup Fire

The City of Somers Point Volunteer Fire Department responded to truck fully involved. Its crew pulled two lines and proceeded to knock the K-Mart Shopping Center on Bethel Road for a vehicle fire on down the fire with assistance from additional Somers Point engines.

NJTP Triple-Fatal On January 29, 2015, Squad 75 (Runnemede), BLS 788 (Runnemede), Rescue 3629 (Mount Laurel), BLS 368 (Mount Laurel), and Virtua Medic 35 were dispatched to MM 31.3 southbound on the New Jersey Turnpike for a reported vehicle off the roadway into a tree. Medic 35 arrived confirming the report with three unconscious people heavily entrapped, requesting two helicopters and an additional rescue company. Battalion 75 arrived on location and assumed Turnpike Command. Rescue 32 (Bellmawr) and BLS 3 (Bellmawr) were added to the assignment. Rescue 3629 and Squad 75 arrived and worked together to stabilize the vehicle and disentangle the three patients. Rescue 32 was ordered to set up the LZ south of the accident on the Turnpike at which point command was notified the choppers were grounded due to weather conditions. All three patients were extricated and pronounced deceased at the scene. The cause and circumstances of the accident is currently under investigation by the New Jersey State Police.

Trailer Fire in Carlstadt On January 29, 2015, members of the Carlstadt Fire Department were dispatched to Gotham Parkway for a well involved tractor attached to a trailer. First-arriving Engine 703 placed two handlines in service quickly knocking down the fire. Engine 702 and Truck 1 assisted with overhaul.

Unusual Call in Haddonfield

On January 21, 2015, Task Force 14 was dispatched to West Cottage Avenue in Haddonfield for a reported dwelling fire. First arriving fire-fighters were met with a very unusual situation: the aluminum siding on the D side was energized due to a shorted out main-service cable. The fire grew in intensity causing the service connection to arc.

No water could be utilized and the electric company had no ETA. With the assistance of the Cherry Hill Fire Department, a plan was initiated to use dry powder on the fire. Reaching the fire was another problem as it was feared the siding was energized. Cherry Hill utilized a long applicator (resembling a navy fog nozzle) and applied dry powder to the area of the fire holding it in check until the electric company arrived. Haddon Heights, Barrington and Westmont BLS assisted. The fire did spread into the dwelling but caused only minor damage.

Atlantic Co. FFA 92nd Memorial The Atlantic County Firefighters Association held their 92nd annual memorial service and reorganization meeting at the Egg Harbor City Fire Department on January 28, 2015. Thirty eight names were read for those who answered their final alarm in 2014 as ACFFA Executive Committee Vice Chairman Oscar Dutch, Jr,. tolled the bell. Members of the United States Congress, New Jersey Assembly and the Atlantic County Freeholders board were in attendance and provided remarks. Freeholder Chairman Frank Formica announced that bids are out for the proposed Central Dispatch Center, a project that has long been sought after by Atlantic County Firefighters.

Monument to Union Hose’s Robert ‘Hawk’ Meyers Dedicated

On October 11, 2014, the Knights of the Inferno Firefighters MC presented the Union Hose Fire Company of Union Beach with a very special monument. The monument was donated through the work of the motorcycle club members and was dedicated to the memory of Union Beach and Middletown Firefighter Robert “Hawk” Meyer who lost his life in the line of duty on June 8, 2014. Brock Farms of Colts Neck donated the statue of the firefighter. The solid granite stone base and inscription were donated by Joseph Uras Monuments of Middletown. Mike Pantina Landscaping and Design did all of the paving stones and landscaping.

Firehouse Kitchen

By Ray Cooney While going through my e-mails, one in particular jumped out at me. It was from Firefighter Scott Belguard from the Hightstown Fire Department in New Jersey. The e-mail spoke of Scott being a chef and how Hightstown Fire Department would love to host Firehouse Kitchen.

As soon as I read it, I gave Scott a call.

Scott was surprised at my immediate reply because he had just sent the e-mail two hours prior. I told him that I try to answer all my e-mails, but it wasn’t everyday I received one from a bonafide fireman chef (Scott went to the famed Johnson and Wales Culinary School).

We scheduled our shoot for January 24, 2015, but had to reschedule because it was the first of two snowstorms that would hit the Tristate Area. When I finally did get there, I was greeted with a huge marquee sign that read “Welcome Ray Cooney and Firehouse Kitchen,” as well as a group of Hightstown firefighters. We filmed two shows that day. The first was with Firefighters Bill Havens and Carl Dye, two salty firemen with over 40 years on the department. They made a delicious pork loin that I called “Pork, on pork, on pork,” because it was pork loin stuffed with pork sausage and then wrapped in bacon. It was to-die-for. During this

episode, I interviewed their chief, Scott Jenkens. He informed us on the background of Hightstown Fire Department, as well as telling us about their operations and procedures. A little side note: Hightstown has on of the largest aerial ladders on the East Coast with a height of 135 feet.

In the second episode, we filmed with Chef Scott, the main reason I came to Hightstown. He made these unbelievable “Beef Shank Tacos with Homemade Guacamole,” The homemade guacamole, or what I should call guacamole salad, really brought out the flavor. Being a small town in New Jersey, the Hightstown Fire Department had that “real” fire department feel. From a chief with a passion for the department, as well as the men who serve under him, to the “chefs” that like to cook for them. I have a feeling you will see Hightstown and Chef Scott again on Firehouse Kitchen.

STUFFED PORK LOIN WITH SAUSAGE & PISTACHIOS

1 Center cut boneless pork loin 2 lbs. fresh ground Italian sweet sausage out of casing.

1 cup unsalted toasted pistachios.

1 Tbsp. Orange zest.

3 Tbsp. chopped (preferably) fresh sage, rosemary, and thyme. ½ cup chopped parsley. ½ pound sliced bacon.

Butchers twine.

Butterfly and pound the pork loin thin and then lightly season with salt and pepper. Set fat side down. In a bowl mix the sausage, pistachios, orange zest and 2/3 of the chopped herbs. Spread the stuffing evenly over the pounded pork loin.

Firmly roll into a long log. Truss tie the roast and sprinkle remaining mixed herbs. Wrap the stuffed pork loin with bacon and roast at 375 until 165 degrees internal temperature.

Operation Code Blue Hosted by Bishop Schaad School in Vineland

Operation Code Blue is a program to provide warming centers for the homeless during particularly bad weather. Designated centers operate when the temperature is 32 degrees or lower with precipitation, or 25 degrees or lower without precipitation. 2 Robertsville FFs Graduate from Fire Academy Two newly graduated firemen have joined the ranks of the Robertsville Volunteer Fire Company of Marlboro Township, Monmouth County. On January 22, 2015, Nicholas Milano, of Marlboro, and James Smith, Sr., of the Morganville section of Marlboro, received certificates indicating they had now completed the nearly 200 hours it took to achieve their goals. Both men were challenged by the newly implemented state standards in the Firefighter 1 program used at the Monmouth County Fire Academy in Howell. They were certainly up for the challenge. Long Branch 2015 Installation

On January 1, 2015, with over 100 people in attendance, the swearing in ceremony was held in the Mayor and Council chambers at City Hall in Long Branch. The newly appointed Chief is Kevin Stout and his Assistant Chief is Ron Guidetti. Both men were given their badges and sworn in by Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno.
