From the Editor’s Desk Dennis Whittam, Editor

Remember the Reason for the Season When an idea or thought strikes us out of the blue, I believe that our heroes from the past, who are on the floor above, guide us to press onward and to do the right thing. I almost forgot to put my firematic mode aside to make room for my holiday prayers and wishes. Let me share my thoughts with you. The holidays should be a special time for all of us. It is a time when we should put our differences aside and remember those that have been taken from us. Hopefully you gave thanks to a higher being for getting you safely through 2014. I hope that before you dove into a delicious Thanksgiving dinner, you paused to remember all of the fallen responders and their families. To date there have been 73 firefighter fatalities. Multiply that number by the average family size and you soon realize that there are a lot of people who need your support and could use comforting words to get them through the holiday season. No matter what holiday dinner you are enjoying with your loved ones, pray for the safe return of our troops who are away from their families. I know most departments escort Santa throughout their communities. I am always touched by the member of the community who holds up a sign that says, "thank you for saving my life." Yes, despite what you think, the community is also praying for your safety as a responder. I remember the words of an ex-Chief in my division who was taken from this world too soon. As a chaplain, Rick ended his prayers to us by saying, "Remember the reason for the season." He encouraged all of us to give thanks and to be watchful over each other. To all of you; may the true reason for the season be remembered. I wish all of you a New Year full of peace and hope. Let God's blessing inspire you to help those who need your prayers. Give thanks with a grateful heart. Season's greetings from the staff of Fire News. - Dennis

Flanders Fire Prevention Week

Members of the Flanders Fire Company #1 and Rescue Squad brought their smoke trailer to the Mount Olive Public Library’s Fall Festival during Fire Prevention Week, where they talked about fire safety in the kitchen and how to get out of a house filling with smoke. Youngsters learned about smoke detectors, rolling out of bed, checking doors before opening them and, when necessary, using an alternate means of escape, such as a window, and having a pre-selected meeting point for the family. Adults also learn about keeping their cooking areas safe, checking their smoke detectors monthly (and replacing batteries any time they change their clocks) and escaping from the home and meeting the family at a pre-selected meeting point. Brian fills the role previously held by Tom Tobiason. Tobiason

resigned from the position and left the fire market at the end of May. "We committed to improving the value of the Firehouse brand across all of our properties when I joined Firehouse two years ago, and I believe firmly that the addition of Brian, and Tim Sendelbach earlier this month, demonstrate our commitment to that promise," said Greg Toritto, Firehouse Group Publisher. "As the needs of the fire service evolve and change, we remain committed to meeting those needs." "I am very proud to be joining the Firehouse team," said Brian Cassell. "This is a great team of committed men and women and I am looking forward to having a positive impact for our exhibitors, sponsors and attendees at both Firehouse World and Firehouse Expo. There are many very exciting improvements coming for both events that will give attendees new learning opportunities, as well as provide exhibitors with the value they need." Brian joined the Firehouse Team on August 18, working from his home office in Tamaqua, PA.

Firehouse Kitchen With FF Ray Cooney

While going through e-mails, I noticed one recurring message. People kept e-mailing me about the shows I did with my father-in-law, Anthony Cino. It wasn’t so much the recipes they were talking about — as delicious as they were — but his strong on-screen presence. In our first show, he spoke about growing up in Brooklyn, smelling the foods from the other apartments and cooking with his mother. Our viewers were touched by the sincerity and heartfelt sharing of the fond memories of his youth. One thing about Anthony, though, he never stops! I had a hard time getting a word in. After he finished his dish, I told him that I had a dish to make. It was my famous Blue Glove Tuna. He looked at me with a smirk because I said, “You made fish. Now I’m going to make fish.” Blue Glove Tuna comes from my days of working in the New York City Fire Department. The first time I made it at the firehouse, the men came into the kitchen and leered at me in disbelief. Was I really mixing the tuna with blue EMS gloves on my hands? I told them to calm down and that I had washed them with soap and water before use. This was more sanitary than having my bare hands mixing it! I prefer to use my hands to mix the tuna, rather than a fork, because the hands give it a smoother

texture and ensure the ingredients are mixed evenly. Even though my Blue Glove Tuna gets rave reviews at the firehouse, my wife doesn’t leave me in control of the tuna salad at home! In the second show I filmed with my father-in-law, he talked about his present life, which includes his wife of 49 years, Roselie, his three beautiful daughters and eight adoring grandchildren. Anthony is like a second father to me because I have known him since I was 15. He has always made me feel like one of his own and has given me his unconditional support throughout the years. Come on! He even let me marry his youngest daughter! The two shows I filmed with him are very special to me. He has a standing invitation on Firehouse Kitchen. As for the public, please no more e-mails about him replacing me as the host! We are currently in preparation to begin filming the fourth season of Firehouse Kitchen. We are always looking for some firefighter chefs and firehouses to feature and share their recipes and stories. Also, this show wouldn’t be possible without the support of our sponsors. Westmont Dedicates 9/11 Memorial

On October 3, 2014, the members of the Westmont Fire Company #1 unveiled the 911 memorial in front of their station during a ceremony. The members worked to acquire pieces of the World Trade Center and create the memorial that will forever stand there. A Haddon Township resident who was a survivor of that day and was in the towers when the plane hit spoke of the incident. A Haddon Township family member spoke of his sister who was not able to make it out. The Fire Company recognized all the businesses that donated their supplies and time to make this memorial possible. - Fire News photos by Ted Aurig

Street Named for Oaklyn and Audubon Chiefs

Aerials from both Oaklyn and Audubon displayed an American flag outside the Camden County Emergency Training Center in Lakeland on November 5, 2014, as streets were dedicated for David G. Aron, a 60-year member of the Oaklyn Fire Department, the late Paul Hartstein of the Audubon Fire Department. Aron was chief in Oaklyn and Hartstein was chief in Audubon, and both were Camden County Chief Fire Marshals. Their work in establishing the training center and continued service led to the street naming.
