Are you performing as expected?

In my recent travels, I have heard the same complaints being made about the volunteer fire service. It seems that many departments are experiencing the problem of members not making their required quota of drills, training, alarms and miscellaneous points. To me, this is not a new problem. It is a problem that pops up from time to time and like a cancer must be aggressively addressed as soon as the problem is noticed. When the problem is addressed, it must be done in a way that solves the problem and does not compound it. This month, I read an article by Harry R. Carter, Ph.D., FIFireE, CFO, ex-Chief and Life Member of the Howell Township Fire Company #1.

He touched upon ridiculous rules that don’t solve problems, but in fact might compound a problem and have a negative impact on what you are trying to fix.

The fire service is a paramilitary organization. If you decide to enlist in the military, you agree to stay for a certain length of time, you train for eight weeks or so, you continue and specialize in an area for another specific length of time. Then, you perform and work as you were trained to do. When your enlistment time is finished, you can decide to reenlist or leave the organization and return to civilian life.

The fire service is not that different. You join of your own free will, you take an oath to uphold the bylaws of the department, you enter a training program to learn the basics of firefighting and then you continue — or at least you are supposed to continue “ your training to become specialized in various aspects of the fire service.

What happens when you suddenly realize you cannot perform as expected in your department? As an officer I sat down with many young firefighters and tried to help them make their "points” by showing them how to do it. Those that listened succeeded. Unfortunately, there were times that I was not successful and I could not find a solution to help the firefighter live up to the agreed obligation.

Like the military, when it comes time to reenlist, you have to ask yourself is this for you? The same is true of the fire service. Ask yourself why you are here and ask for help from your officers and chiefs for ways that you can be an asset to your department. In the end, it is completely up to you to make things work.

NATIONALLY KNOWN AUTHOR RICK LASKY COMING TO DOVER Critically acclaimed speaker and author of Pride and Ownership: A Firefighter’s Love of the Job will be offering his only area speaking engagement on October 25, 2014.

Chief Rick Lasky a well-known, author, lecturer and consultant will be speaking at 0800 untill 1700 in the Dover High School Auditorium.

Lasky, a retired fire chief from Lewisville, Texas, is well known in the fire service as an author and lecturer.

Chief Lasky will be speaking about the fire service and leadership in a one-day event hosted by the members of the Local FMBA 60 career firefighters of the Dover Fire Department. The event will serve as a fundraiser for the Local.

“We are excited to host a speaker of Rick Lasky’s stature,” said union president Bryan Waagner. “To have a charismatic speaker talk about leadership and passion in the fire service is a home run. Chief Lasky will touch on things every department in this country let alone this area could struggle with.”

Chief Lasky holds no punches when it comes to taking an honest critical look at the fire service today.

FIRE APPARATUS MANUFACTURERS’ ASSOCIATION AWARDS 2014 SCHOLARSHIP The Fire Apparatus Manufacturers’ Association has awarded its 2014 Phillip L. Turner Fire Protection Scholarship to California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo student Gary Dominguez.

Dominguez graduated from University of California Santa Cruz with a degree in Business Management and Economics. He is currently a Fire Protection Engineering Graduate Student at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and maintains a 3.925 GPA. He received the $5,000 scholarship in recognition of his outstanding academic achievement and commitment to the fire service.

The award is given annually by FAMA and has been sponsored since 2009 by FAMA member Akron Brass Co., a worldwide marketer and manufacturer of high performance life-safety, fire fighting and emergency rescue equipment.

A presentation was made at the FAMA Technical Committee meeting held in conjunction with the FireRescue International conference in Dallas, Texas.

Join Fire News in Remembering 343 Fallen Heroes of FDNY Register for the 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb at Stony Brook University Show others that you will never forget the 343 members of FDNY who bravely gave their lives on September 11, 2001. Join the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation on Saturday, October 25, 2014 for the 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb at the Kenneth P. Lavalle Stadium on the campus of Stony Brook University in New York.

Participants will climb the stairs of the stadium multiple times to total 110 stories, representing the number of floors in the Twin Towers and symbolically completing the climb those fallen heroes were unable to finish. Everyone will receive a photo ID of one of the fallen heroes of September 11.

“The 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb is an opportunity for everyone in the community to show their respect and admiration for these courageous men. It also reassures the family, friends and co-workers of the fallen that these firefighters are not forgotten,” said Chief Ron Siarnicki, Executive Director of the NFFF. “The Foundation is very pleased to be working with Stony Brook University for this event and we want to be sure that each of those firefighters are represented by someone climbing the stadium.”

The fee is $35 per person. All participants should park in the Stadium Lot and enter through Gate 2. Check-in begins at 0700 and the climb begins at 0830. The proceeds help the National Fallen firefighters Foundation create and maintain programs that support fire service survivors. Support of these 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb events provides assistance to the surviving families and co-workers of the 343 firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001.

“Stony Brook University is proud to host the 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb in honor of the fallen firefighters,” said Elaine Crosson, Vice President, External Relations of Stony Brook University. “We honor their memories and deeply appreciate the tremendous loss their families have endured.”

Fatal Structure Fire with Entrapment

On July 8, 2014, Tuckerton Fire Department was dispatched to a fire alarm at Village on the Green Apartments Building 3, on East Main Street. Chief Lee Eggert, Jr., arrived and found smoke showing.

Tuckerton Police Sergeant Chris Anderson attempted to enter the apartment, but could not due to heat and smoke. Complex management advised they believed an occupant was in the apartment on the second floor. Engine 50-21 took a wrap at the hydrant and drove into the courtyard to access the building. The crew of Lt. Dale Eggert, Jesse Doberenz, Gage Nist, Steve Makowsk and Andrew Tonnesen took tools, a thermal camera, and two handlines while pump operator Lee Eggert got water with the assistance of some residents pulling hose.

The victim was quickly spotted by use of a thermal imaging camera, and was taken outside. Engine 50-01 arrived with a crew of Ashley Linney, Kathleen Viola, and EMT Brett Golden. Golden checked the victim who, though badly burned, was found to be breathing. Rescue 50-23 arrived with Capt. Keith Emeigh, Anthony D’Amato, and Joe Mathis. Engine 50-11 came with driver Rich Deldonna. While Quality Medical’s crew loaded the victim for transport, firefighters completed extinguishing the fire, containing it to the apartment of origin. West Tuckerton Assistant Chief Danny Embrich arrived on scene quickly and assisted Chief Eggert with operations. West Tuckerton, Mystic Island, Eagleswood, and New Gretna fire companies along with Great Bay Regional Vol. EMS also assisted at the scene. Parkertown Fire provided cover up and landing zone services. Ocean County zone coordinator Jay Sonnenfeld was on scene as well as the Ocean County Sheriff’s and Prosecutor’s offices.The victim later died, making this the first fatal fire in Tuckerton since one occurred across the street at Bayview Trailer Park in the 1970s.

Pier Blaze in Edgewater Recently, the Edgewater Fire Department was dispatched to a reported fire at 45 River Road. Command requested additional resources to assist in fighting the fire under the pier. A request for one of the FDNY fireboats was made. Due to the fact it was low tide, the boat could not get close enough.

Several units operated for a number of hours.

Blackwood Handles Shed Fire In the early morning hours of July 3, 2014, Station 84 was dispatched to East Lake Avenue for an investigation.

Shortly after the assignment was toned, it was upgraded to a shed fire. Unit 8402 (Assistant Chief Maschke) arrived to find a fully-involved shed in a rear yard.

Engine 842 laid in and went in operation with a handline, while Ladder 84 assisted in overhauling the structure. The fire is under investigation by FM84.

Pot Fire in Cologne…

No, the Other Kind

The volunteer fire companies of Cologne and Mays Landing responded to Summersweet Drive in the Harding Run II Development off New York Avenue on June 17, 2014, for a report of a structure fire. Cologne Assistant Chief Paul Gramm arrived and requested a response from the Laureldale Volunteer Fire Company. Firefighters forced entry into the adjoining unit and discovered a pot on the stove. Firefighters ventilated the structure and removed the pot. Also responding were the Hamilton Township Rescue Squad and the Hamilton Township Police Department.

Vineland Structure Fire

The City of Vineland Fire Department was dispatched on May 6, 2014, to Panther Road for a report of a commercial structure fire.

The structure was located adjacent to the City of Vineland Fire Department’s Station 5. Engine 53’s crew, from Station 5, entered the A side of the structure after hitting exterior fire on the A/D corner with their Stang gun. Engine 61 arrived and entered Division 1 and backed up Engine 5’s crew. Engine 42 arrived and gave their water to Engine 53 while their crew performed RIT operations.

Engine 61’s crew relieved Station 5’s crew and knocked down the remaining fire, pulled ceilings, and extinguished all remaining fire.

Soffit Fire in Somers Point The City of Somers Point Fire Department responded to Shore Hardware on Route 9 on June 18, 2014, for a structure fire. Somers Point Chief Frank Denan arrived to find fire showing from the front of the store. Company #1 Chief Michael Sweeney entered the structure and found no smoke in the interior. Truck 2 from Company #2 laddered the building and the fire was confined to a soffit in the front of the building, the result of an electrical malfunction. - Fire News photos by Carl Crossman

Hotel Fire in Longport

Volunteer Fire Departments from the City of Longport, the City of Somers Point, Scullville and Bargaintown responded to the Bay Island Inn on Longport Boulevard early on August 31, 2014, for a report of a structure fire. The Somers Point Fire Department arrived first and quickly knocked down a fire in one room, but the fire had extended into the roof. Somers Point Engine 47 laid an LDH back out to Longport Boulevard and fed their Squad 43 and 2 Truck.

Firefighters then laddered the roof and began opening up, holding the extension of the fire to the area of origin. One occupant was transported by EMS to the local hospital for burns to the leg, and a total of eight people were displaced.

Pennsauken Goes All-Hands

Recently, the Pennsauken Fire Department was dispatched to 39th Street for a dwelling fire. Camden City Engine 9 arrived first and reported heavy smoke showing throughout. Engine 1132 arrived and secured a water supply followed by a backup line. Crews faced heavy fire conditions on the first and second floors and eventually fire going through the roof. Evacuation tones sounded and master streams went into service.

Scullville Car Fire The volunteer fire companies of Scullville and Bargaintown responded on June 24, 2014, to Bishop Court in the Scullville section for a report of a vehicle fire. Scullville Assistant Chief Steven Prisament arrived and reported a pickup truck in the driveway of the property of a single family dwelling fully involved with the radiant heat of the fire melting the siding on the garage. Car Fire in Cardiff The volunteer fire companies of Cardiff and Bargaintown responded to Black Horse Pike and the Harbor Square Shopping Plaza, in front of the Burlington Coat Factory on May 23, 2014, for a vehicle fire. On July 20, 2014, Station 84 was dispatched to the area of Denny’s on Blackwood-Clementon Road for a reported vehicle fire. Battalion 84 (Captain Coucoules) arrived to find a vehicle well-involved. Engine 842 arrived, stretched the front-bumper line and put a quick knock on the fire. Engine 841 and Rescue 84 assisted 842’s crew.

Car Fire in Cardiff The volunteer fire companies of Cardiff and Bargaintown responded to Scarborough Drive for a report of a car fire on June 16, 2014. Cardiff Assistant Chief Steven Sear arrived and assumed command and reported a vehicle fully involved. Cardiff Engine 1516 arrived and pulled two foam lines and attacked the fire which was now involving a second vehicle and an exposure, a shed. The fire was quickly contained by Cardiff and Bargaintown firefighters who also had to dike off a culvert in the area due to the runoff, which brought a response from the Atlantic County Hazmat Team.

The Mays Landing Volunteer Fire Company responded to the Harbor Avenue gravel pits on August 16, 2014, for a vehicle fire.

Upon hearing this dispatch and knowing the locale, New Jersey Forest Fire Unit C-5 under the command of Section Warden Jeremy Webber, responded to assist. C-5 and the Hamilton Township Police arrived and determined the fire was too far off the road for conventional fire apparatus to reach. C-5 entered the pits and proceeded to knock down the fire utilizing a 1-1/2 inch line.

Mays Landing Chief John Saurwald arrived and established command, and instructed firefighters from Engine 1813 to assist in the extinguishment. C-5, responding back out to the roadway to get refilled by Engine 1813, ferried firefighters back to the location of the fire where they completed extinguishment. Also responding were the Mays Landing Rescue Squad.

Restaurant Fire Contained

On July 6, 2014, firefighters responded to the Clay Oven, an Indian cuisine restaurant on Route 46 in the Succasunna section of the township. Upon arrival of the first units smoke was showing from the 2-1/2 story restaurant. Within minutes a second alarm was transmitted putting the RIC team from Netcong to work and bringing Mine Hill and Randolph Township units to the scene as well as an RIC from Picatinny Arsenal. Numerous handlines and an aerial were used to knock down the fire. The fire was contained to the second floor and the roof area of the restaurant. One Netcong firefighter burned his hand and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. The fire was brought under control in under a hour. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Border Boat Fire

A 22-foot boat on fire was quickly extinguished by crews from the Philadelphia and Camden city fire boats, as well as Palmyra, Riverton and Cinnaminson Township fire departments. The incident occurred on August 3, 2014. The occupants were picked up by another boat and were not injured.

Car Fire in Mays Landing

The Mays Landing Volunteer Fire Company responded on July 13, 2014, to Denbigh Court in the Oakcrest Estates for a vehicle fire.

Mays Landing Chief John Saurerwald was informed by the fire dispatcher the fire was knocked down but still smoking. The fire dispatcher received a second 911 call that the vehicle was on fire again. First-due Mays Landing Engine 1812 arrived and its crew was instructed to pull the front bumper line. Crews began knocking down the fire and there was a blast of magnesium which lit the area up. This prompted a switch to foam operations which successfully brought the fire under control.

FFs Injured in Clifton Blaze

On August 26, 2014, the Clifton Fire Department responded to Mountainview Drive for the report of a house fire. A working fire was found with heavy fire in the rear of the 2-1/2 story frame dwelling and already through the roof. A second alarm was requested as companies attempted an interior attack, however fire conditions forced command to order all members out of the building.

After a brief exterior attack, crews re-entered the building but were again forced out as heavy fire conditions prevailed. Two aerial streams and several exterior handlines were put into use to eventu-

ally knock down the fire and, as the heat and humidity started to take a toll on firefighters, command requested a third alarm. It is reported that the home housed a pet sitting business and that several animals were killed. Several firefighters were injured with nonlife threatening injuries and transported to the hospital. The fire destroyed the home and took over two hours to get under control with units remaining on the scene for several hours more. Passaic, Paterson, Bloomfield and Montclair departments assisted.

MVA, Car Fire in Bargaintown

The Bargaintown Volunteer Fire Company responded to Ocean Heights Avenue on August 3, 2014, for a report of a motor vehicle crash with fire. Bargaintown Chief Eugene Sharpe arrived and established command and had first-in Bargaintown Engine 1526 stretch a line to knock down a fire in the engine compartment. Apparently, the vehicle left the road and struck several trees, causing the fire. All occupants were out of the vehicle upon arrival.

Structure Fire in Goshen

On July 31, 2014, the Goshen Fire Department received a call for a working structure fire in the Goshen section of Middle township on Goshen Sweeten Road. The fire started in a garage and quickly spread throughout the residence through a common attic. Goshen was first on scene and quickly called for Cape May Court House, Rio Grande, Dennisville and Stone Harbor to assist in water supply due to lack of hydrants in the area.

2-Car MVA in Mizpah

The Mays Landing Rescue Squad, Hamilton Township Police and Atlanticare Paramedics responded on August 10, 2014, to Route 40, west of Pittsburgh Avenue, for a motor vehicle accident. HT Police arrived to find a two-car MVA with one vehicle on its side with the driver still inside. The second vehicle came to a rest along the shoulder of the highway with its driver still in the vehicle. Mays Landing Rescue Squad requested the response of the Mays Landing Volunteer Fire Company for extrication equipment. This also prompted a response from the Mizpah Volunteer Fire Company, in whose area the crash was located. Before the arrival of the Mays Landing extrication team, Atlanticare medics entered the overturned vehicle through the rear hatch and extricated the trapped person. While this was unfolding, rescuers removed the person from the second vehicle, and both persons were transported via ground to the hospital. The cause of the crash was under investigation by the Hamilton Township Police Department.

The volunteer fire companies of Bargaintown and Farmington responded to the Garden State Parkway entrance on Fire Road, Exit 36, on July 22, 2014, for a vehicle fire. Bargaintown Engine 1528 arrived and Safety Officer Ken Badger, Sr., established command and found a single vehicle well involved. Firefighters began extinguishment while Farmington firefighters put a hydraulic spreader into service and opened up the car’s hood. Egg Harbor Township Police shut down the highway during the incident, and no injuries were reported. Also responding were the Egg Harbor Township Ambulance Squad, New Jersey State Police.

Clinton FFs Band Together to Help Fight Childhood Cancer Worldwide, every three minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer. In the U.S., one in five children with cancer will not survive. This is unacceptable to a group of volunteers at the Clinton Fire Department who are prepared to make a bald statement. The firemen will be shaving their heads in solidarity with kids fighting cancer while helping to fund life-saving research with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

Firefighter Challenge

On June 1, 2014, Rockaway Borough Chief Ron Hamman hosted a Firefighter Challenge for surrounding departments. This competition was revived from challenges that were held several years ago. The events tasked were a hose evolution, roof venting, and Pittsburgh Drill.

Rockaway Borough, Dover, and Rockaway Township competed in this year’s challenge.

RBFD Team 1 posted the best times for the Hose Evolution and the Pittsburgh Drill, while Rockaway Township won the Ladder evolution.

The overall trophy, which will be held by the winner until next years competition was won by Rockaway Borough Team #1.

Little Silver Dedicates New Apparatus On June 14, 2014, Little Silver Fire Company hosted a truck dedication for their new Ladder Truck and Fire Police Unit. Local fire companies from the area attended the event to celebrate the new pieces as the Little Silver Mayor Neff and the Council blessed the new apparatus and a proclamation was presented by Monmouth County Freeholder Curley. Little Silver Fire Company members prepared and served excellent food to all guests, live entertainment was performed by multiple bands and there were bouncy houses for the younger attendees.

Firehouse Kitchen

By Firefighter Ray Cooney It was a beautiful, chilly morning when the Firehouse Kitchen crew and I made a push to Somerset, New Jersey, to cook with father and son team, Alan and Alan Lantanzio, Jr. We were here to make Alan senior’s “Chicken Jambalaya” and Alan junior’s really garlicky “Garlic Bread.” Somerset, New Jersey, is a short ride from Manhattan. We were cooking in the East Franklin part of Somerset, a beautiful little suburb.

When I arrived at East Franklin Fire Department, there was a memorial statue honoring one of their fallen. I decided to open the show in front of the memorial, thereby informing America about Firefighter Kevin Apuzzio, who died in the line of duty. Firefighter Apuzzio was trying to save the resident of a house fire when the first floor collapsed into the basement. Both Firefighter Apuzzio and the resident didn’t survive.

The reason I decided to open the show with this story was not only due to the magnificent nature of the statue, but to remind all that firefighting is not just about the meals and brotherhood. It is also is about the possible risk of a firefighter’s life while trying to help others. As I’ve said in many shows, when the job is good, it’s good, but when it’s bad, it's very bad.

With that being said, let’s get down to cooking.

Firefighter Lantanzio, Sr., is larger than life. We talked about how jambalaya is a great firehouse meal because it feeds the masses. As we were cooking, I noticed that Alan junior was quiet and reserved —just watching — and I decided to

include him in the conversation. Well, this quiet son came alive. First I asked young Alan why he became a firefighter. He said, “Because East Franklin needs at least one good looking Lantanzio in the fire department.” Alan senior smirked and that’s how the rest of the show went.

I tasted the food in the rec-room with other members of the Lantanzio family and a bunch of East Franklin firemen. It became a little bit of a contest as to what was better, the jambalaya or the garlicky garlic bread (soaked in butter!!). It was too close to call, so I had a solution. I dipped the garlic bread into the jambalaya and magic! The East Franklin Fire Department and Lantanzio family made me feel right at home. I am looking forward to cooking there again.

Firefighter Alan Latanzio East Franklin F.D. Somerset, NJ Chicken & Chorizo Jambalaya Ingredients: 3 lb. chicken breast cut into 2" pieces 1 lb. chorizo, diced 2 cups green pepper 2 cups parsley, chopped ½ cup green onion, chopped ½ cup celery, diced 1 cup sweet onion, diced 2 garlic cloves, sliced (1) 15 oz. can of tomato sauce 5 cups of rice 10 cups of water Salt Pepper Cayenne 10 quart sauce pan Directions: • Add oil to bottom pan under a medium high heat • Add chorizo & cook about 5 minutes • Add chicken, stir together with chorizo for about 10 minutes • Add pepper, onion, green onion, parsley and garlic • Stir and cook until onions are tender • Add rice, tomato sauce. Blend together until sauce boils • Add water, salt, pepper, and cayenne.

Stir together until water is no longer on top of mixture • Lower heat to simmer. Put on lid and simmer for 45 minutes. Do not touch • After 45 minutes, serve and eat.

The Cape May City Council honored outgoing Cape May Fire Chief Jerry Inderwies, Jr., for 26 years of service during its August 5, 2014, meeting. Mayor Edward Mahaney said Inderwies provided, “Tremendous leadership and revolutionized the department.”The mayor and council presented Inderwies with a plaque as he received a lengthy standing ovation from the audience. Inderwies said he

41 Graduate From AC Fire Academy

The Atlantic County Fire Academy graduated its spring 2014 class on July 7, 2014, at the Anthony “Tony� Canale Fire Training Center in Egg Harbor Township. Pompton Lake Memorial Rediedicated In 1963, The Pompton Lakes Volunteer Fire Department erected a small memorial to recognize all Pompton Lakes firefighters that had served and would serve the borough of Pompton Lakes.

On May 14, 1974, the fire department was called out to a structural fire in the basement of a small supermarket. Firefighter Cahill and other firefighters entered the structure to find the seat of the fire. He became trapped amid the rubble, and despite several attempts by his brother firefighters to help him, firefighter Cahill died when his SCBA ran out of air. He was just 49 years old and left two children, 9 and 14. This was the first (and only) LODD in Pompton Lakes.

In 1975, the area around the monument was named Cahill Square in his honor. Over the years, the monument slowly deteriorated, and the department wanted to construct a new one that would be dedicated to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Firefighter Cahill’s LODD. The new memorial’s centerpiece is a black granite stone in the shape of a Maltese Cross

with the Pompton Lakes shield and motto engraved on it. The 1901 bronze bell from the original memorialwas sent to a foundry for repair and refinishing, and was reinstalled. The third facet is a bronze casting of bunker gear located on a pedestal to the right of the main monument.

The dedication was attended by FF Cahill’s son and daughter, townspeople, and Pompton Lakes Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary personnel. Anyone who wishes to donate to the memorial reconstruction can send a check to the Pompton Lakes Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 74, Pompton Lakes, NJ 07442, designated Memorial Fund. Millville Muster

On August 17, 2014, the Glasstown Antique Fire Brigade held their 34th Annual Muster at the Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center in Millville. Over 50 pieces of fire apparatus attended, both privately and fire-department owned, and came from as far away as Virginia. A flea market was set up inside the village as well, selling many old and new firematic memorabilia. There were also teams that competed in both a fire bucket brigade and barrel fight. Awards were presented in many different categories, along with the results from the fire bucket brigade and barrel fight.

Farmington FD’s Link Retires

Long time Egg Harbor Township employee William “Bill” Link and life member of the Farmington Volunteer Fire Company retired after 30 years on August 20, 2014, and was feted by the Egg Harbor Township Mayor and Committee, fellow employees, firefighters,and family in an SRO ceremony. Mayor James “Sonny” McCullough cited Bill’s many achievements including his career as a dozer operator for the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, Life

Member of the Farmington Volunteer Fire Company, mentor for alcohol abuse victims, and public works employee. Mayor McCullough stated that Bill is so friendly, he was nicknamed “The Mayor,” and tooted the horn on his public works vehicle at people so much it fell off.
