Thank You to the John Feal Foundation Whenever I met Ray Pfeifer, I’d ask him how he was doing. He always responded to me by saying, “Not bad for a guy with Stage 4 cancer.” I never knew if I should laugh, smile or cry as we compared notes about our cancers. After a short conversation, Ray would give me what I coined the Ray Pfeifer Smile and I would snap his photograph. I learned about Ray’s passion for all 9/11 responders when I talked with him and followed him leaving the quarters of Engine 311 and Ladder 158 in Queens with the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund, to bring a piece of cherished WTC steel to Colorado. Yes, Ray was certainly in his element. I could feel the angels that tagged along with us as we headed to the George Washington Bridge.

When Ray passed, I attended his funeral and briefly shared a handshake with John Feal. I offered him my thanks for his dedication and commitment to all responders from September 11, 2001. From his handshake, I knew John Feal, like Ray, was a passionate individual who was going to continue to protect the first responders who were stricken with various cancers as a result of doing their job, searching for the victims of the World Trade Center tragedy.

Over the past few weeks, I intently watched a devoted team of first responders walk the halls in Washington, DC, to fight so that all responders stricken with 9/11 cancers are taken care of. I watched Detective Lou Alvarez speak with Congress and urge his listeners not to abandon the Victims Compensation Fund. I only hope that Lou’s voice haunts Capitol Hill and everyone can hear clearly as Detective Alvarez reminds our political leaders to, “Do the right thing!”

At Detective Alvarez’s funeral NYPD Police Commissioner said it best, “I’ll tell you this. We can thank God for Lou Alvarez, who stepped forward to make that demand on behalf of every citizen and resident of our country.”

Recently, my eyes popped out of my head when our future Presidential candidates quickly and unanimously raised their hands in support of giving health insurance to individuals who are not legally in the United States. Trust me, I am a caring person who believes in humaneness.

However, I strongly believe that we must help the people that live in this country and work hard.

Our citizens are the people who continue to make the United States a great place to live. Our 9/11 responders are the people who — without ques-

tion — need the unanimous support of our political leaders. Responders who have given their all, deserve the unconditional support of Capitol Hill.

I thank John Feal, Jon Stewart, Kenny Specht, Mike O'Connell, Rob Serra — to name a few — for their relentless push down the hallway to make sure no one forgets those who responded to the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

To quote John Feal, “Friends — Change is coming! Legacies will be cemented! And tens of thousands will be helped one more time! For you Ray and Lou! Stay tuned!”

Update: On July 12, 2019, the House of Representatives voted to reauthorize a fund that compensates victims of 9/11 and their families.

Holiday Interrupted in Latham

Maplewood, Latham, Boght FAST and Schuyler Heights were called to a structure fire on Marne Street in Latham. The family was in the back yard enjoying the holiday when the garage caught fire. When fire personnel arrived the fire had spread to the attached home quickly spreading to the second floor. Getting water to the scene proved to be a problem. Vehicles in the driveway also caught fire and tires could be heard

popping. Once water was supplied, the fire was quickly put out. Fire investigators were at the scene to determine the cause with the possibility of it being started by neighboring fireworks. There were three injuries, two treated at the scene and one firefighter treated after the incident. Two dogs, a hamster and a turtle were rescued by firefighters.

Basement Fire in Queens

3 Hurt in Brownsville Blaze

On May 29, 2019, the Queens Central Office started receiving phone calls for a fire in a private dwelling off Brookville Boulevard. Firefighters located and extinguished a fire in the basement and no injuries were reported.

On the morning of June 6, 2019, FDNY Engine Company 283 responded to a call of heavy smoke pushing out the fifth floor of a six-story, occupied, multi-dwelling on Union Street in Brownsville, Brooklyn.

Numerous people were reported trapped, and three people suffered minor injuries during the fire.

New Baltimore Mobile Home Fire

At around 1850 on June 18, 2019, New Baltimore, Ravena, Coeymans and Coeymans Hollow were dispatched for a structure fire on Route 9W. Selkirk was on stand-by at Coeyman. Fire departments had to make it up a very steep muddy driveway before reaching the fire. Crews then encountered a mobile home front porch area in flames. It took them approximately 30 minutes to completely extinguish the fire and nearby hot spots. There were no injuries reported - Fire News photo by Simon Lindmark

Albany Child Rescued

On May 20, 2019, just before dawn, police and fire units were dispatched to Third Avenue in the South End of Albany. Police arrived first and found a woman in the backyard who told them her three-year old was inside on the third floor. The officers found five men upstairs searching in the smoke who they told to leave.

The officers found the child and returned him to the mother. It was at this time that a fire was dispatched for what would be an alarm on Bradford Street.

Schenectady Fire Stopped from Extending

On April 30, 2019, Schenectady firefighters battled a two-alarm fire on Victory Avenue after Schenectady Police on patrol found a house with flames showing from the C side and extending into the attic.

Efforts to keep the intense fire from spreading to a neighboring

house proved successful and damage was confined to the building of origin. The house was vacant at the time of the fire, and the cause was blamed on squatters trespassing.

County-Wide Response in Rensselaer

Queens Village Fire Guts Upper Floor

On May 30, 2019, Rensselaer County dispatch alerted several fire companies in the northern part of the county of the possible need of interior firefighters at Northern Bennington College. Fire was found burning through the walls and up into the attic of a very large, old wooden building. Many mutual aid companies responded. The cause was thought to be old wiring.

FDNY units in the Queens Village section of Queens battled a fire on the second floor of a private dwelling on Hollis Avenue on the evening of May 10, 2019. The blaze gutted the upper floor and the overhaul operation was hampered by cluttered conditions.

2 Injured in Rte. 114 MVA On June 25, 2019, Winona Lake Fire Department responded with Heavy Rescue 323 for a two-car MVA on Route 114 at Route 17K. When units arrived they used adsorbent to mitigate the gas and oil that was on the road. One patient was transported by Mobile Life and the other by Town of Newburgh Ambulance. The accident was turned over to the police for investigation.

Man Pinned Under Car in Washingtonville On June 22, 2019, the Washingtonville Fire Department was called for a report of a person trapped under a vehicle in the High Grove Development off of Ahern Boulevard. Upon arrival, personnel found an unconscious, unresponsive male trapped under the front of the vehicle. The male was extricated and treated by the Blooming Grove VAC. He was transported to Saint Luke’s Hospital in critical condition.

Latham Handles Overturn On July 5, 2019, the Latham Fire Department responded to an MVA in a residential area off of Swatling Road. Brake Fire at New Baltimore Rest Stop At around 1905 on June 30, 2019, the New Baltimore Fire Department was dispatched to a vehicle brake fire at the Exit 21 Rest Stop on the Thruway. Units arrived to an abandoned box trailer on the ramp up in smoke. Firefighters extinguished the fire in a few minutes. It is unknown exactly how the fire started and no injuries were reported.

As I was going through my mail, I came upon a letter from a teacher To find out more about in Rocky Point (NY). It stated how her class was a big fan of the show, Firehouse Kitchen, or how to Firehouse Kitchen. She was excited and we set the date!

So began my trip to the northeast shore of Long Island. As one drives out that way, you cannot miss the feeling that you are in another place. The landscape goes from the suburbs to a more rural landscaping and is breath taking. For a moment, I forgot I was only 30 minutes from home! The class I was visiting, was a life skills class. The main objective in the class is to get the kids ready for the real world. What is more neces3 pounds of chicken sary in the real world than to know how to cook? Therefore, I Onions showed them how to cook a meal.

We went through a little Q-and-A and then got right to work. I thought chicken skewers would be perfect. I Teriyaki sauce did most of the cutting and they did most of the skewering.

South Bethlehem Structure Fire

Selkirk and Coeymans Hollow Fire were toned out for a structure fire on Willowbrook Avenue in South Bethlehem on April 14, 2019, at approximately 2230. “The fire appeared to have started in the front of the garage and worked its way back,” said Selkirk Chief Joe Michaniw. “The two-and-a-half story garage had walls with another room on the second story, and a high pitched metal roof

which made fighting the fire difficult.” Crews managed to extinguish the fire in the lower levels of the garage, but the upper level caused problems and required hand tools and ground ladders. An excavator was called from the town to tear down the structure. A neighboring home and garage received heat damage to its siding.

HANNOVER FAIRS USA TO LAUNCH INTERSCHUTZ USA FIREFIGHTING EQUIPMENT AND SAFETY EVENT TO DEBUT IN PHILADELPHIA Hannover Fairs USA (HFUSA), the US subsidiary of Hannover, Germany’s Deutsche Messe - one of the world’s largest and most active organizers of capital goods trade shows - announced that it will debut INTERSCHUTZ USA focused on the North American firefighting equipment and safety industry. INTERSCHUTZ USA will take place October 13 to 17, 2020, in the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. INTERSCHUTZ is the world’s largest trade show for fire and rescue services, taking place every five years in Hannover, Germany.

The new five-day event will incorporate a global view of firefighting equipment and tactics.

INTERSCHUTZ USA will respect the traditions of the US fire service and will demonstrate firefighter safety solutions that incorporate current and emerging strategies and technologies in the US, as well as introduce what other industry experts and visionaries are doing globally.

“The US fire service has tremendous respect for the INTERSCHUTZ brand and its size and scope.

Many of the industry representatives we have been meeting with are incredibly enthusiastic about the launch of the show in America,” said Larry Turner, president and CEO of HFUSA. INTERSCHUTZ USA will meet the needs of a 21st century fire service, highlighting the latest in technology, strategy and operations, and firefighter safety and effectiveness. “We have a great opportunity with INTERSCHUTZ USA, not to modernize an existing event with the challenges that brings - but to build an event for current and future firefighting leadership,” added Turner.

RESCUE 1 SALES’ MIKE MARQUIS RETIRES May 31, 2019, marked the last day for Mike Marquis, Vice President of Rescue 1 Sales, here at P.L. Custom Body and Equipment Co., Inc. (PLCB) and the beginning of a well-deserved retirement.

Mike is capping off a 36-year successful career here in Manasquan. Over the years, Mike grew with the company, working first as an electrician, followed by developing our graphics department, then as a contract coordinator, and finally as the driving force behind our Rescue 1 division.

Initially sold as PL Custom Emergency Vehicles Rescue Trucks, Mike and Bud Smock developed the rescue division into what is now known as Rescue 1.

Formalized with that name in 1985, Mike became synonymous with the Rescue 1 Extreme Duty brand of rescues, command centers, haz-mat, and other specialty purposed emergency vehicles produced under the Rescue 1 moniker.

Under his watch, Rescue 1 has grown to enjoy a solid reputation as a custom manufacturer of Extreme Duty rescue trucks. Mike became intimately involved with each unit that was built here, developing strong relationships with our customers. In

discussing his retirement date, Mike said, “I have seen Rescue 1, and by extension, PL Custom, expand into new markets. The Rescue 1 brand has made tremendous strides and I look forward to watching the continued growth. Now I am looking forward to focusing on family and fishing. I have met and worked with many great people over these past three-plus decades, from customers, sales reps, vendors, and fellow employees. It has been a great career and I know that our past will shape our future.”

Today’s fire and emergency vehicle manufacturing industry is filled with daily personnel changes and company acquisitions. Just as PLCB remains a privately held, family-owned company today, Mike’s continuity with our Rescue 1 division is in stark contrast to the prevailing industry trend.

We look forward to hearing stories from Mike of his well-deserved retirement and know that he looks forward to spending time with his wife, Irene, his two sons, Michael and Matthew, and his dogs, Bro and Dude. On behalf of all of us here in Manasquan, we wish you all the best!

Trench Rescue in Brooklyn

Recently, the FDNY responded to the intersection of Flushing and Kent Avenues in Brooklyn for a construction accident. Upon arrival it was determined that a construction worker had a back injury and was below grade in mud. A high point was set up and, while companies packaged the patient, Rescue 2 set up ropes to remove him. 1 Dead in Bethlehem Apartment Fire

At 0200 on June 13, 2019, Town of Bethlehem fire companies and surrounding companies arrived to find an entire apartment building in flames. One person was unaccounted for and a failed effort was made to enter his apartment. The gas meter on the side of the structure was aflame reaching several feet in the air and could only be turned off underground. Hours later the deceased occupant of the apartment was found. The cause was under investigation.

Slingerlands Stove Fire

On June 14, 2019, Slingerlands, Delmar and Elsmere Fire were dis- kitchen. With everyone out of the building, firefighters put out the patched to a stove fire at the New Village Deli next to Slingerlands small food fire in the oven and then placed a few fans both in and Station 1 on New Scotland Avenue. Firefighters ran next door to out of the deli to ventilate.

FDNY companies in the Flushing section of Queens battled a threealarm blaze in an occupied multiple dwelling on Franklin Street on June 8, 2019. An apartment fire on the sixth floor extended into the cockloft warranting multiple alarms. Extensive roof operations were undertaken and the blaze was brought under control.

Close Call for Selkirk Boy

The Selkirk Fire Department, Albany County Paramedics, and Town of Bethlehem EMS responded to Maple Avenue for a sixyear-old boy reportedly electrocuted. Selkirk Chief Joe Michaniw radioed that the boy was not electrocuted but had been shocked by an uncovered outlet. Paramedics examined the child at the scene before deciding to take him to the hospital. The child did not lose consciousness according to Bethlehem Police. An examination of the building revealed several code violations and determined the living conditions were not suitable in any of the apartments.

Hastings on Hudson Basement Fire

On May 29, 2019, Hasting-on-Hudson firefighters were dispatched to Kent Avenue for a structure fire. On arrival crews found heavy smoke coming from the building. Firefighters entered the building to find heavy fire on the first floor which they were able to quickly knock down. As they advanced lines they also found heavy fire in the basement and had to battle the fire through hoarding conditions. The fire was knocked down in around 30 minutes.

EMTs Recognized for Off-Duty Save

Village of Chatham Honors Firefighters

On June 17, 2019, Mobile Life EMTs Shelagh Sweeney, 23, and Zach Bundschuh, 25, from Mobile Life Support Services, the largest emergency medical service provider in the Hudson Valley, provided life-saving care to an apparent stabbing victim. Both EMTs received commendations for their quick action and heroism. The two, not equipped with their gear or a rig, were forced to improvised until members of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) arrived.

Sweeney is also a Captain at the Hurley Volunteer Fire Department in Hurley and was the first female in the history of the department to be recognized as the Hurley Firefighter of the Year. Bundschuh has been a Mobile Life employee for three years. He also volunteers at his local volunteer fire department in West Hurley, and is a graduate of SUNY Ulster in Stone Ridge.

On June 8, 2019 four Chatham Firefighters were honored by the American Legion, Department of New York District 3, as the District 3 Firefighting Unit of the Year.

Mayor John Howe accompanied Chief Paul Rideout, 1st Assistant Chief Eric Barnes and Firefighters Greg and Alex Horst to the Joseph E. Zaloga Post #1520, 4 Everett Road in Albany for the ceremony. The firefighters were awarded Certificates of Distinction. In the photo, (left to right) are Firefighters Gregory Horst, Alex Horst (brothers), Assistant Chief Eric Barnes and Chief Paul Rideout.

FDNY Holds Paramedic Graduation

Up Close

More than 300 paramedics will hit the street after graduating from Paramedic school recently. Many of the recruits will end up in Canarsie, East New York, Brownsville and East Flatbush sections of the city. Their graduation was held at the Christian Cultural Center.

Volunteer Firefighters Taylor Kahn and Peter Schreiber meet an Australian firefighter who, like them, came to New York City on May 4, 2019, for the 5th Annual Memorial Stair Climb at 3 World Trade Center. All three firefighters successfully completed 80 floors.

FDNY’s

Lt. John Moran With regret, the FDNY announced the death of retired Lieutenant John T. Moran, of Ladder 41, who retired on April 14, 2007. Lt. Moran passed away on June 21, 2019.

This member bravely served this Department protecting life and property in the City of New York in the rescue and recovery at Manhattan Box 5-5-8087 World Trade Center.

The heartfelt sympathy of the entire

department is extended to the family, relatives, and friends of the deceased in the midst of the great loss that they and the department have sustained.

Lt. Moran’s funeral took place at the Yorktown Funeral Home in Shrub Oak, NY on Tuesday, June 25, 2019, and was followed by a Mass at St. Patrick’s Church, in Yorktown Heights, NY. - Fire News photo provided

Bethlehem Honors Veterans on Memorial Day

The Town of Bethlehem held its annual Memorial Day Parade on May 27, 2019. Starting at the American Legion and ending at the Bethlehem Memorial, the parade had a huge turnout. From the Bethlehem High School Marching band to all Bethlehem Fire

Districts, many people lined up on the side of the roads to watch and get involved with the parade as candy was thrown into the crowd.

The parade lasted for 40 minutes and there was a Memorial Ceremony held after.
