Are You Into the Job? A long time ago, I sat at my first company meeting as a probationary firefighter, when the captain asked for volunteers to represent the company on various committees. I thought that as a probie I wasn't included. After all, I was attending the Suffolk County Fire Academy, and thinking about the long list of courses I wanted to take. How was I going to find time to represent the company on a committee? An ex-chief tapped me on the shoulder and said, “You’re with me on the Museum Committee.” To this day I have coffee with ex-Chief Martin who turned out to be my mentor and friend. Yes, I learned to fight fires, pump trucks, fill out squads to assist our ambulance corps and I represented my company and department on numerous committees. I soon learned that being a firefighter was a lifestyle and there was a

lot more to it than just responding to calls.

Like many of you, it didn't take long before I realized that the fire service was more than fighting fires and responding to EMS calls. For some reason, I started reading Fire News from the back to the front. I looked at the happy faces of responders in the Motley Crew section. I read about the events that were not EMS or fire related.

Yes, this crazy business we are in is a lot more than ‘just’ responding to calls. Count how many events we cover that are not related to calls. Fire News covers these events because you are there. We care because you care!

This year Fire News will be at over 23 expositions and attend countless other events that support you, the first responder.

Fire News is proud that we can attend your events and report on them. On a side note,

your department should have a Public Information Officer so that the word gets out about events you are doing to raise funds for various causes important to you and your communities.

Remember that you will be a better first responder when you continue your education in the fire service and become involved with the committees in your department.

Attend seminars and become an active department member who strives to be the best of the best. FDNY Lt. Joseph P. DiBernardo once asked, “Are you on the job or are you into the job?” I think many of you are definitely into the job. Fire News will continue to do what we have done successfully for over 43 years, support and honor you with coverage of every aspect of your jobs in our newspaper and on Facebook or Instagram. ... ANNOUNCEMENTS CHAPLAINS ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES FUNDRAISER FOR NYS FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS MEMORIAL

NYSAFC 9/11 MEMORIAL STAIR CLIMB AT FIRE 2015

The New York State Association of Fire Chaplains, Inc., is pleased to announce the establishment of a Challenge Coin fundraiser to benefit the New York State Fallen Firefighters Memorial.

Each coin is engraved with the seal of the Fire Chaplains on one side and the statue from the memorial on the other side and will be available for $ 10. From every coin sold, $5 will be given to the memorial fund which will help offset the cost of the memorial service each October.

Chief Chaplain Ken Hessel stated, “This is a great example of the Chaplains Association working in partnership with the memorial to continue to provide ongoing support to the men and women of this state who have given the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities.”

As of October 7, 2014, there are 2,390 names on the wall on the Empire State Plaza in Albany. The cast bronze statue was sculptured

by Robert Eccleston of Schuyler Falls and dedicated on October 5, 1998.

Coins may be ordered through the Chaplains website at nysafc.org or at the display booth at fire police, fire chiefs, and FASNY conventions.

Join the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs (NYSAFC) and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) on Friday, June 19, 2015, for the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb during the NYSAFC 109th Annual Conference & FIRE 2015 Expo at the Turning Stone Resort in Verona, N.Y. Participants will climb the Turning Stone Resort tower hotel stairwell multiple times for a total of 110 stories, representing the number of floors in the Twin Towers. Registration is $35 and is open to FIRE 2015 attendees and the public at www.firehero.org/event/stairclimb15-nysafc. Check-in and on-site registration is at 7:00 a.m. in the Oak Room located in the Turning Stone's tower hotel meeting room area. The climb starts at 8:00 a.m. Registrants will receive a photo ID of one of the fallen heroes of September 11th to carry with them and an event t-shirt. The climb at FIRE 2015 is limited to 100 participants. Participants wishing to make the climb in turnout gear and SCBA may do so if desired, but must bring their own gear and SCBA. This is entirely optional and not required.

City of Poughkeepsie LODD

On May 11, 2015, an estimated 2500 firefighters turned out to honor Firefighter Tim Gunther, a 21- year veteran of the City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department who passed away from cardiac issues after assisting in the rescue of a trapped male from a heavily involved structure on May 4.

Firefighters from throughout the area set up numerous tributes along the route from McHouls Funeral Home in Hopewell Junction. The funeral procession stopped at Poughkeepsie Station #2 on Main Street (where Tim was assigned to Group 2) and a brief service was held. The procession then continued down Main Street which was lined with firefighters, to the Mid-Hudson Civic Center where family, friends, and fellow firefighters all reflected on Tim’s life and the numerous contributions that he made to the lives of others. The Tim Gunther Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established in his honor and to continue his legacy of helping others.

Recently, two people lost their lives in a fire on Bradley Street in Schenectady, which brought a ladder truck from neighboring Niskayuna Fire District 1 to the scene. Five police officers were treated for smoke inhalation when they tried to rescue one of the residents. The house was completely gutted and was torn down the next day.

Hopewell Biz Burns

On May 23, 2105, Dutchess County 911 dispatched the East Fishkill Fire Department along with the Village of Fishkills FAST unit for smoke coming from the structure at the William Tell Hardware Store on Route 82 in the Village of Hopewell. First arriving units encountered heavy smoke from the roof of the structure. An initial offensive attack was attempted, but the operation quickly went defensive due to rapidly deteriorating conditions. Despite the best efforts, the building was totally destroyed. Firefighters remained at the scene until the next day as an excavator pulled apart the build-

ing so crews could extinguish hot spots, and investigators could look for clues as to the cause. East Fishkill was assisted at the scene by Beekman, Glenham, Hughsonville, LaGrange, New Hackensack, Rombout, and Village of Fishkill, as well as Mobile Life Support Paramedics. The fire’s cause is being investigated by the East Fishkill Fire Department Fire Investigation Unit, the East Fishkill Police Department, and the Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response Fire Investigation Division.

Fatalities at Poughkeepsie Fire

On May 4, 2015, City of Poughkeepsie firefighters were dispatched for a structure fire at Church and South Cherry Streets.

Firefighters arrived to heavy fire coming from the front of a 2-1/2 story residence. They immediately went to a second alarm which brought in a FAST unit from Arlington, as well as coverage for the city’s now empty stations. As crews began their operations, a neighbor advised that there was a male occupant trapped. As a crew started its attack, a four-man search team made their way above the fire to search for the occupant. They quickly located the male unconscious on the second floor and with great effort, were able to bring him out of the structure where they then began to administer aid. The victim was then turned over to Mobile Life paramedics who transported him to Mid-Hudson Regional where he died from

his injuries. As crews were cleaning up and beginning their investigation of the fire, Firefighter Tim Gunther, began to suffer a cardiac event. He was transported to Vassar Brothers Medical Center for treatment and passed away on Tuesday May 5, 2015, with his family at his side. Poughkeepsie Chief Mark Johnson said, “Tim was an exemplary firefighter and friend” and “was trying to save the life of another person, and made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Train Sparks Major Brush Fires

On May 9, 2015, an eastbound train leaving Binghamton sparked multiple fires along the railroad tracks through Port Dickinson, Hillcrest, Port Crane and Sanitaria Springs. The largest of the fires was northeast of the Nowlan Road intersection and was estimated at nearly 55 acres before containment. During the incident dozens of agencies and hundreds of firefighters from Broome and Chenango Counties assisted in the effort. Every fire and EMS agency in Broome County, several agencies in southeastern Chenango County, police, New York State Forest Rangers, State Fire and a New York State Police helicopter assisted. In total, 31 agencies worked together on this incident to bring it to a positive end with no structures involved and only a couple of minor injuries reported.

Delanson Brush Fire

On April 19, 2015, firefighters and other personnel from several Schenectady, Schoharie and Albany County departments responded to a brush fire on Knight Road in the Town of Duanesburg, Delanson Fire Department District. Trucks were hampered reaching and attacking the fire due to soft ground. Several acres were burned in a fire started by a person open burning. The resident was issued a summons.

Queens Village Fire Units of the FDNY in Queens were called to the Elks Lodge in Queens Village on May 22, 2015. Smoke could be seen pushing from the eaves of a large building on 218th Street and firefighters quickly began to open ceilings and walls to expose the blaze.

Community Pulls Together at Sr. Apt. Blaze Firefighters responded to a blaze started in Hoosick Falls at the Westpark Apartments, a senior residence, on May 16, 2015. When Chief Paul Aleksonis arrived, he reported heavy black smoke and the 25 or so seniors being evacuated. He immediately called for mutual aid from Hoosick, North Hoosick, Buskirk, Johnsonville, Cambridge and Pittstown.

Nearly 1000 feet of large diameter hose was laid to the frame structure atop a hill. The fire was held to the original three apartments. There were no injuries, and thanks to the handson help of many local people the seniors were evacuated safely to a nearby church, where they stayed until a lodging could be found for them.

Eggertsville House Fire Recently, the Eggertsville Hose Company was dispatched to a house fire on Coronation Drive. Upon arrival, EHC 9 reported a working fire. Engine 1’s crew made entry and extinguished the fire within 20 minutes, containing the fire to the rear of the structure. Mutual aid came from Snyder and North Bailey, along with Amherst PD, Amherst OEM, Amherst Fire Inspector, TCA, and the Red Cross.

Cold Spring House Fire The Cold Spring Fire Department assisted by the North Highlands, Kent Cliffs, Garrison, and Village of Fishkill along with Putnam County/Transcare Medics recently operated at a structure fire on Parrot Street in the Village of Cold Spring. The fire, which heavily damaged the structure, left it uninhabitable.

Contained in Albany

The Albany Fire Department responded to a reported apartment house fire on Quail Street on May 6, 2015. Upon arriva, units found heavy fire on two porches, extending up to the roof of the two-story building. Firefighters did a great job containing the fire to the back of the home. Deputy Chief E.J. Seney, Jr., stated that all occupants self evacuated and that there were no injuries reported.

3-Alarmer in Bed-Sty A fire started early on May 16, 2015, after a car crashed into a building in Brooklyn. FDNY units responded to the fire in a building at Dekalb and Throop Avenues in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of the borough. Good Save in North Chatham

The Nassau Fire Department was on the road when they received a mutual aid call for a barn fire in North Chatham in Columbia County, on May 6, 2015. They arrived to a fully involved barn that was collapsing, with extension to the back of a neighbor’s house.

Nassau was able to attack the rear of the home with a handline.

Mutual aid arrived from Niverville, Tri Village, Clinton Heights,

South Schodack and Schodack Valley. Firefighters did a great job saving the structure other than the rear addition. The owner, who was at home, thought that she had lost her home, until told by the coordinator that there might be 15-percent damage.

Cooking with my Husband This month’s article is going to be written a little differently than normal. Since I am the one that is always typing up the articles for Firefighter Ray, and this month’s article is about me, we thought it would be interesting to get a take on filming from the guest’s point of view. First, let me introduce myself. I am Lori, Firefighter Ray’s wife. Secondly, let me inform you that the only reason I was a guest on the show was because he had a last minute cancellation and needed to fill the spot. Being the good wife, I agreed to help him out and we filmed our first episode together. This wasn’t the first episode for my family. You have all seen my father, Anthony, on the show every season. You can even catch my mother at the end of my episode.

With all that being said, it was a beautiful day in Bayport when we filmed. Like all shoots go, I was told we would start at 9 a.m. and didn’t begin until 10:30. Preparation, for the meal I was making on the show, began the night before. I was making twice baked, bone-in pork chops and breakfast potatoes (yes, for dinner). Firefighter Ray said he would help me prep the meal the night before, but as any wife knows, this was not happening (and I didn’t really want him in the kitchen, as he has mentioned on previous shows). By the time he arrived home that night, I had everything prepared and cooked what needed to be cooked.

Back to filming. Once we began shooting, Ray turned from my husband to Firefighter Ray. I only hope he doesn’t kiss all his guests!

We began preparation on the pork chops and potatoes. Firefighter Ray was trying to be helpful and cut the potatoes, but I had to take the task away from him We joked around back and forth. He has a great sense of humor, probably one of the reasons I have stayed with him all these years! It definitely wasn’t because of his cleanliness in the kitchen.

After all was cooked and the food was ready, we had another guest join us for the tasting. As I mentioned earlier, my mother came on and gave some stories of her own memories of Ray and I when we were younger.

Of course, when Ray tasted the pork chops, he said they were unbelievable. Best he’s ever had. He’s a smart boy!

Being married to a firefighter is sometimes hard. You never know if they are going to make it home after their shift or if you are going to get “that call.” You do learn to deal with it and not worry so much as time goes on, but it is always in the back of your mind.

I did get such a call, on our anniversary, 11 years ago. Ray had fallen,from a ladder,while venting a second story window. He sustained internal injuries as well as a fractured spinal cord and severe damage to his hips. With all this having happened, I would never tell him he couldn’t be a fireman, because it is what he truly loves doing. He pours all his love of the fire department into this show, as his way of keeping his fire department days alive.

The camaraderie and connections they make, while on the job, enforces his drive to do whatever he can to help others that are injured along the way. This is what Firehouse Kitchen is all about.

BREAKFAST POTATOES (not just for breakfast) 6 medium size Idaho potatoes 1 large onion Salt, pepper, paprika Extra-virgin olive oil Using a large sauce pan, use enough olive oil to cover the bottom of the pan. Put on medium heat. Dice onion and put in once oil is hot. Clean, peel and cut into cubes the potatoes. Once the onion is beginning to brown, add the cubed potatoes. Cover with paprika and season to taste with salt and pepper. Mix all ingredients to ensure seasons are evenly distributed. Cover sauce pan. Check every few minutes and mix to prevent burning of the potatoes. When potatoes are soft (not mushy - when you can easily put your fork into one), they are done. Remove from pan using a straining spoon (to avoid the potatoes from sitting in oil in serving dish). Garnish with parsley and enjoy. Great with any dinner meal and in a morning breakfast omelette.

Queens House Fire

Queens firefighters recently battled this fire in a private dwelling on 148th Road. When Engine 314 arrived on scene they found heavy fire on the exposure 2 side and throughout the first floor extending to the second. No injuries were reported.

Ulster and Sullivan Cos. Brush Fire

From May 3 to May 9, 2015, volunteers from four counties, forest rangers and state police teamed up in an effort to stop a fire, which spread across the Shawangunk Ridge State Forest, burning more than 2000 acres. People living on the mountain in Cragsmoor were evacuated to the Walker Valley firehouse, as the fire moved towards the small village. Hundreds of volunteers spread out to quell the

flames, while rangers set backfires ahead of the flames to prevent the fire from jumping. Overhead, state police and military made airdrops, with larger planes able to drop 800-gallon loads. So far there has been a 25-year high in the number of wild fires.

Vestal Responds to MVA and Fire

Not a Good ‘Deals’ in Ozone Park

On May 25, 2015, Vestal Police were dispatched for a two-car MVA near the intersection of Vestal Parkway East and Jenson Road.

Once on scene it was determined that there were several injuries and one vehicle was on fire. Vestal Fire Station 4 and Vestal Ambulance were dispatched. Vestal Ambulance responded with two ambulances to assess and deal with several injured patients.

Vestal Fire responded Engine 32-4 for the vehicle fire and Utility 32-4 to assist police with traffic. Before Engine 4 arrived one of the vehicles had become fully involved. Chief 32B also responded. The crew from Engine 32-4 stretched a single handline and quickly extinguished the vehicle fire.

Walden Installation

Fiery Crash in Glenmont

On May 6, 2015, a collision occurred involving a pickup truck which caused a minivan to burst into flames on Route 9W at Corning Hill Road. The minivan was completely engulfed with heavy flames within minutes. Police had to shut down northbound traffic on Route 9W, diverting all traffic down Corning Hill. The Selkirk Fire Department responded to the scene, quickly extinguishing the fire. Albany County Paramedics, along with the Bethlehem Ambulance Service, also responded. Their were no reported injuries to the occupants of either vehicle.

3-Car MVA Albany Fire and EMS responded to a three-vehicle MVA with a rollover on Quay Street on the Hudson River. Upon arrival they found one Jeep on its side, a white sedan with heavy front end damage, and a second Jeep with minor damage. One person was transported to the hospital by Mohawk Ambulance Service with non-life threatening injuries.

Car Into Pole On May 27, 2015, the Castleton Fire Department responded to an MVA in the village of Castleton in which a car hit a pole, causing three injuries. One person had to be extricated. Schodack Valley and Castleton Ambulance with Bruen Rescue Squad responded.

Ravena Installs Officers

The Ravena Fire Department held its 2015 Installation Banquet at Anthony's Banquet Hall in Catskill, on May 2, 2015. This year’s Master of Ceremonies was Village of Ravena Trustee Joel Coye, who is also a former officer of the department. Trustee Coye also conducted the swearing in ceremony for both the fire line officers and executive officers. The 2015 Line Officers are Chief Travis Witbeck, Deputy Chief Jeff D’Ambrosio, Assistant Chief Aaron Santillo, Captain John Lennon III, Lieutenant Kevin Phillips, Lieutenant Brandon Hardy and Lieutenant Daniel Haight. At the

helm of the Departments Fire Police are Deputy Chief Mary Lou Lennon, Assistant Chief John Lennon IV, and Captain Bruce Roberts. In charge of maintaining the apparatus is Chief Engineer George Haight. Chief Witbeck presented Assistant Chief Santillo with the Most Drills Award. The Ravena Fire Department recently opened up its doors for an Open House in its latest efforts to recruit new firefighters. Located on Main Street in the Village of Ravena, the all-volunteer force has, in recent years, renewed its efforts to bolster their ranks with fresh recruits. While holding an open house is not a new concept to the department, the department is actively engaging recruits in conjunction with FASNY’s RecruitNY. This year’s open house gave potential firefighters a chance to participate in various activities intended to give them an idea of the duties expected of today’s firefighters. The Ravena Fire Department is pleased to announce they are currently in the interview stages of two potential recruits as a direct result of the open house.

A Lasting Memory

The Fuller Road Fire Department were overjoyed to welcome their newest Honorary Member on May 31, 2015. Chace Foley, a fiveyear-old cancer patient was escorted from the Ronald McDonald house he and his family were staying at by an entourage of Colonie Police, Albany County Sheriffs and a plethora of motorcycle riders from the Punishers Motorcycle Club, whose membership consists of Police Officers. Chace’s favorite things in the world are police, motorcycles, the military, superheroes, ice cream and firefighters.

In one afternoon all of his favorite things came together to wish him well. Batman held his hand as he was walked across the street after being sworn in as an Albany County Sheriff’s Deputy by Sheriff

A large crowd gathered in front of Fuller Road Fire Department as Chace raised his hand to be officially sworn in as a member, stating “I Do.” Chief James Savoca and other members presented Chace with an official set of turnout gear, helmet and Fuller Road Explorer shield. Chace and his family and newly made friends then received a tour of the engines and trucks along with a tour by Colonie EMS of emergency vehicles.

Everyone was touched by the courage and strength of Chace and the smile he shared with everyone will be remembered.

Latham on Top

On May 31, 2015, a group of firefighters from the Capital Region gathered at Sam’s Club in Latham to help raise money for the Children’s Hospital in Albany. “Firefighters On Top” was originally set to take place on the roof of the building but due to severe weather conditions, the firefighters climbed upon a scissor lift and remained there all afternoon until their goal was made. It was a fun afternoon for all who participated and helped to benefit the children in Albany.

Elsmere Mourns Ollie Palmer

On May 28, 2015, ‘Jolly’ Ollie Palmer took his last ride on a fire truck as he lost his battle with cancer. Ollie was a member of the Elsmere Fire Company for 62 years. He will be sorely missed by the members of the Elsmere Company, as well as the other four departments in the Town of Bethlehem. Ollie was an avid stock car driver in his day, starting with racing midgets than moved up to stock cars, racing at Fonda and Lebanon Valley Speedways, as well as

Menands, Devil’s Bowl, State Line and Victoria Speedways. He was inducted into the N.Y. State Stock Car Association Hall of Fame. In recent years Ollie still showed up for parties at the firehouse. He was best known for his red socks, which he always wore. As a show of respect, all the firefighters that were at his funeral wore red socks. Rest in peace Ollie!

A Rochester Pioneer Retires

Therese Mancuso studied musical education in college, and never even dreamed she would later become the second female firefighter to be hired by the City of Rochester.

Twenty-six years later, she is the first female firefighter to retire from the line.

“I was never a sit behind the desk kind of person,” Mancuso said. After college she couldn’t find a job teaching, so she picked up a few different jobs, including one as an electrical apprentice.

When a friend of hers who was already a city firefighter suggested she take the civil service exam after a recruitment drive, she gave it shot.

She admits she was nervous and slightly intimidated at the academy. But all of the other recruits and instructors gave her a fair shake. She held her own, although she admits that starting the saw on the roof ended up being the most challenging part.

Mancuso says, “I can do anything a man can do,” adding that, “a lot of the job is in your mind. Keeping your nerves in check is a big part of staying focused on completing the task at hand.”

Throughout her career she worked at the former Engine 1, the former Quint and Midi 9 where she enjoyed going on medical calls and MVAs. “Everyone has their strong suits, even in the fire service,” she said. She found hers and used it. She finished her last seven years as the driver of the Protectives.

Rochester Fire Department in 1858. Today, the city supplies the truck and a driver and volunteers man the truck, which assists the rest of the fire department.

She says the best part of the job is making a difference in someone’s life. “We take a bad situation and make it better.” Most other firefighters speak highly of her noting her dedication to the citizens and her fellow firefighters.

The worst calls she tries not to remember, but doing CPR on babies tops the list.

The call she remembers most was a house fire on Averill Avenue where there was a woman trapped. She was on the hoseline and it took an extra long time for other trucks to arrive on scene.

When asked what she would like to be remembered for in her tenure as a pioneering woman firefighter in the City of Rochester, she replied, “I would like to think I may have changed their minds about females being on the job.

“Rochester has a well trained, committed fire department that cares about its citizens, and I was proud to be a part of it. Mancuso has always held a second job, which included woodworking and landscaping, which she will continue into retirement. Her favorite thing to do is build guitars.

Her advice to new firefighters coming on the job; constantly improve yourself, and always be a contributing member of the team.
