Refresh Your Driving Skills In 1959, I sat in the driver’s seat of a brandnew Mack C model pumper. I was no different than the kids of today, who visit our firehouses and sit in the rigs, dreaming of driving to a fire.

When I joined the volunteer fire service in 1992, who would have ever thought that I would become qualified to drive my department’s Mack CF and go on to become part of a team of dedicated drivers and pump operators that teach others to do the same.

Unlike the days of the past, today’s chauffers and pump operators are trained to teach others. For now, I will put aside pump operations and ladder operations and talk about driver training. Recently, the insurance companies that represent the fire services have set up a program that trains the trainer how to make sure your departments drivers can safely operate their vehicles. The driver “train the trainer” course is a 16-hour course that covers every aspect of driving. Once your department’s driving team takes the course, they are then qualified to set up a program that all drivers can follow to learn to drive and to refresh as recom-

mended by your agency. Now that the weather has started to warm up, the drivers in many departments re-qualify by taking a road test along with a cone course that challenges the driver’s judgement and skills. Drivers also take an in-class course that reviews emergency vehicle driving laws, vehicle dynamics, braking systems and a host of other topics that drivers must understand for safe vehicle operation.

The in-class portion of the training covers the proper use of emergency lighting and the use of sirens. Many organizations utilize Automated Traffic Control Systems. The classroom is the perfect place to review the system’s operating features and limitations. For the members who do not drive in your department, the course covers the proper use of hand signals and radio procedures when directing the drivers as they back up.

I could go on about the course, but I am sure you have your own driver refresher course. The purpose of my editorial is to remind you that springtime is the perfect time to refresh yourselves on the principles of safe driving and to

re-familiarize yourself with the driving skills that you may take for granted. It is the officer’s job to remind drivers to slow down when your adrenalin kicks in. When backing up, follow your department’s protocol to insure a safe backup operation. Wear your seatbelt and make sure the members riding with you are also wearing their seatbelts.

Springtime is the perfect time to hone your driving skills, so they are ready to react safely when something goes awry. Encourage your driving instructors to take an Emergency Vehicle Driver Training course.

Schenectady 2-Alarmer

Flames Light the Sky in Yonkers

On March 12, 2019, Yonkers firefighters were dispatched to Parkview Avenue for a fire in a structure built in 1929. Crews were met with light smoke showing from the top floor of the six-story apartment and a report from a Westchester County Police helicopter of fire on the roof. Firefighters encountered heavy fire which had extended into the cockloft. Command struck a second alarm, followed by a third, as residents were evacuated. Soon after, a fourth alarm was called as the fire spread throughout the cockloft.

A general alarm was transmitted bringing all off-duty members. As the roof began to soften up and conditions deteriorated, crews were

pulled and went defensive. Ladder pipes were put into operation, but a strong wind pushed the fire through the cockloft. All mutual aid covering the city was requested to the scene. The fire burned through the entire length of the cockloft and dropped down into apartments on the lower five floors through shafts and voids, as the roof and cockloft collapsed. The fire took over 10 hours to bring under control. Over 100 residents were displaced and multiple firefighters sustained minor injuries.

Possible Arson in Wappinger

Newburgh and More Stop 3-Building Fire

With the temperature at one degree, Dutchess County 911 dispatched New Hackensack, Town of Wappinger/EMStar Paramedics, and the New York State Police for a structure fire at a residence on Myers Corners Road. Personnel arrived to find a fire at the front entrance to the residence and quickly extinguished it.

No one was injured, and the cause of the fire was being investigated by the Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response Fire Investigation Division and the NYSP BCI. - Fire News photo by Bill Johnson

City of Newburgh firefighters, assisted by numerous departments, operated at a structure fire on Broadway. With the temperature at seven degrees, firefighters arrived to find an active fire with fire running the cockloft between three different buildings. Firefighters were able to quickly knock down the fire. The following agencies assisted: Beacon Professional Firefighters, Castle Point, Good Will, Winona Lake, West Point Professional Firefighters, Stewart ANGB Fire, Mobile Life Paramedics, and the City of Newburgh Police.

15 Displaced by Newburgh Blaze

City of Newburgh firefighters, and numerous mutual-aid departments, recently operated at a structure fire on Broadway.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire throughout a 25- x 75-foot, two-story structure. The cause of the fire was under investigation and left at least 15 people homeless, many who were lucky to escape.

Firefighters quickly knocked down heavy fire and rescued a dog.

Florida Barn Goes

8 Displaced in Amsterdam

The Florida Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a barn fire on McGraw Road in the Town of Florida on January 26, 2019.

The barn was heavily damaged but first arriving crews put a stop to any extension. There were no animals inside. Assistance came fromFort Hunter, Tribes Hill, Fultonville, Cranesville, Fort Johnson, Burtonsville, Mariville, and Pattersonville, Montgomery County EMO, Montgomery County Fire Coordinators, GAVAC and Town of Florida Highway. - Fire News photo by Mark Perfetti

Amsterdam firefighters responded to a structure fire on February 27, 2019, on Jay Street. Eight residents were displaced, when the blaze ignited in a second-floor apartment bedroom, with the room sustaining heavy fire damage. The remainder of the second floor sustained smoke and water damage, while the first floor only had water damage.

Difficult Time at Latham Fire

Maplewood, Schuyler Heights, Shaker Road-Loudonville Duty Crew and Boght FAST fought a structure fire on Harvard Road in Latham. The fire, which was believed to have started in the rear of the building by the fireplace, proved to be difficult to contain as the apartment had a unique overlapping roof line which allowed the fire to spread.

Good Work Stops Garage Fire at Children’s Home

On March 15, 2019, Maplewood, Latham, Verdoy, Boght and Schuyler Heights responded to a structure fire at the St. Coleman’s Home on Haswell Road. The facility aids and houses children who are orphaned or have developmental disabilities. The facility’s garage, which housed two vehicles and a work area, was engulfed when units arrived. Water supply was hampered due to a malfunctioning hydrant. The vehicles were destroyed. No one was injured and no other buildings were damaged.

3 FFs Hurt in Red Hook

On March 7, 2019, Engine Company 279 transmitted an all-hands for a fire in a two-story commercial building around the corner from their firehouse. Battalion 32 transmitted a second alarm upon arrival for heavy fire from the Golden Star Smoked Fish warehouse on Smith Street in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Three firefighters suffered minor injuries.

In March, the Washingtonville Fire Department was alerted on a to work. Gorham Handles House Fire

Could Have Been a Bad One in Hillcrest

On March 17, 2019, the Gorham Fire Department in Ontario County was toned out for a chimney fire on County Road 18. Chief 12-0 arrived to heavy smoke showing and requested mutual aid for manpower and tankers. The fire was in the walls and made it hard to get to. The fire extended into the second story part of the house and crews were on scene for several hours.

The Hillcrest Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Trailside Place on January 18, 2019. As firefighters advanced the first line into the home, it was discovered that the fire had burned through the floor from the basement. Under the command of Chief Chris Bowers, mutual aid companies were requested, searches and ventilation tasks were completed, and the fire was soon placed under control. The family escaped without injury prior to the fire department’s arrival. In a fairly rare occurrence, it was the second working fire in Rockland County within an hour.

By Samantha Cooney This month’s article was written by my daughter, Samantha Cooney.

It is not about cooking or the show, but about me. I feel her essay helps to give some insight into how firemen think and feel. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Growing up, my dad was famous, to me, for saying two quotes: “You can't worry about what you can’t control,” and “Firefighters always find a way.” Being the eighth of nine children, my dad constantly felt he had to fight to be noticed. He did not have the patience and concentration required of sports and music. If he grew up in my generation, he would have been classified as ADHD. It was the love and understanding from his mother that helped keep him connected with his family. My dad always said she was the one person who truly understood him. I say this in the past tense because, unfortunately, she passed away when he was 24 and wasn’t able to help him through 9/11 and a career-ending injury from the FDNY. My grandmother, Barbara Ann Cooney, lived her life for her children. At 52-years old, she was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer and was given six months to live, but her will to be there for her children gave her strength to live three more years. While dealing with this, my dad needed financial help to open a martial arts school. His mother, seeing the passion in his eyes for the martial arts, knew he would be successful and funded the venture.

Two years after opening his school, the second dream of my dad’s came true. He became a New York City Firefighter. His grandfather, father, and oldest brother all shared the same honor. This new connection with his family helped to fill the void of the loss of his mother.

My father always said that being part of the FDNY was like having

a second family. Firefighters live, eat, save lives together and look out for each other just as a brother and sister would. This is why the events of 9/11 tore my father’s heart out, as it did every other firefighters’. From working at Ground Zero, to the hundreds of funerals for his fallen brothers, it became part of his daily routine. Firefighters ask themselves, “Why not me?

Why did I get to live?” Just like my dad’s mother, he knew that those fallen firefighters would want him to push on and keep doing his job. On November 9, 2003, my dad suffered a fall off a ladder while battling an apartment fire. This was the beginning of the end of his FDNYcareer. He suffered extensive hip and back injuries and was put him into early retirement. These injuries also ended his career in kickboxing. Two of his passions were taken away in a matter of seconds.

No one knew then that these tragedies would shape who I would be.

With each tragedy, my dad learned how to not let something hold you back. He has since begun his own production company and has a little show called Firehouse Kitchen on national television. He continues to show me that when something knocks you down, you stare it straight in the eyes and push through.

Our life is only what we make of it.

Mahopac Falls Goes to Work

On March 11, 2019, Mahopac Falls received a call for smoke coming from a house on Barrett Hill Road. Both fire stations, Carmel Police and EMStar responded. Arriving units found downed power lines and fire with a heavy concentration of smoke. While stretching hose, calls were put out to Putnam Valley Fire and Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Mahopac, Mohegan and Carmel, and

NYSE&G. Incident Command was Captain Chris Tompkins.

Mahopac School Transportation Supervisor Steve Troost responded and coordinated student drop off with Mahopac Falls Fire Police officers for everyone’s safety.

Athens Fire Displaces Family

On March 9, 2019, the Athens Fire Department, along with West Athens Fire, Catskill Ambulance and Greene County Medics, were dispatched to a house fire on Union Street in the Village of Athens.

Athens Assistant Chief Anthony DelVecchio III was met with fire and smoke coming from the home. DelVecchio immediately called for assistance from Catskill, City of Hudson, Coxsackie and

Greenport. Crews encountered heavy fire on the first and second floors of the two-story, single-family dwelling. Residents escaped safely and the fire was brought under control within an hour.

Greene County Fire Cause and Origin team was called to investigate, and the Red Cross was called to assist the displaced family.

- Fire News photo by PuckStopperPhotography.com On March 14, 2019, Greene County Volunteer Firemen’s Association (GCVFA) Fire Victims’ Assistance Fund Chairman Frank Roberts, presented the Thurman family of Athens with a check from the GCVFA. On March 9, 2019, the family were victims of a house fire and GCVFA wanted to do their part to help.

Pictured are Frank, Richard and Anna Thurman and their three children. The Assistance Fund was established to assist members of the community who are victims of house fires. A letter is required from the fire chief where the fire was located. One financial resource for the fund are the clothing bins throughout the county.

A percentage of the money collected is deposited into the fund.

Just after 1800 on March 12, 2019, Yonkers Fire Control took multiple calls for smoke from the roof of a large six-story apartment building on Parkview Avenue near Garrett Place, on the city’s eastern border. Upon arrival, units found heavy smoke from a welladvanced fire in the cockloft and shaft work, originating from a top-floor apartment. Reaching a fourth alarm in just 20 minutes, 110 firefighters worked for more than 10 hours to extinguish the fire. Mutual aid came from seven area departments. Twelve firefighters were injured. A cat was removed from the fire building unconscious, revived at the scene by Empress EMS and transported to a nearby vet.

FDNY Captain Cusumano Honored There was a great turnout on March 13, 2019, for the FDNY Columbia Association luncheon, which honored Captain Sal Cusumano of Ladder Company 129. There were a lot of faces from the past, including the senior man who broke Sal in at Ladder 13 way back in the 70s. The younger guys included both companies (E273/L129) that briefly stopped by to offer congratulations to Captain Sal. Sal was presented with a new company jacket and said he will it wear proudly.

On March 3, 2019, Brown’s Brewing Company held its 9th annual Center. The winners this year were Troy for the Judge’s Choice and Firefighter Chill Cook-Off.
