From the Editor’s Desk Dennis Whittam, Editor A long time ago, I sat at my first company meeting as a probationary firefighter. At this meeting, the captain asked for volunteers to step up to the plate and represent the company on various committees. I thought to myself that as a probie I wasn’t included in this part of the meeting. After all, I was attending the Suffolk County Fire Academy to become a firefighter.

I was also thinking about the long list of courses that I wanted to take to make me a better firefighter. How was I going to find the time to represent the company on a committee? Guess what, an ex-chief tapped me on the shoulder and said, “You are with me and you’re on the Museum Committee.” To this day I have coffee with ex-Chief Martin who turned out to be my mentor and friend in the fire service. Yes, I learned to fight fires, pump trucks, fill out squads to assist our ambulance corps and I represented my company and department on numerous committees. I soon learned that being a firefighter was a lifestyle and there was a lot more to it than just responding to calls.

Like many of you, I looked to reading Fire News when it came to the firehouse. It didn't take long before I realized that my mentor was right. The fire service was more than fighting fires and responding to EMS calls. For some reason I read Fire News from the back to the front. I looked at the happy faces of responders in the Motley Crew section of the paper. I also read about the events that filled up the paper that were not EMS or fire related. Yes, this crazy business

Are You Into the Job? we are in is a lot more than responding to calls. Count how many events in the paper that Fire News covers are not related to incidents. We cover these events in our newspaper because you are there. We care because you care!

This year, 2015, Fire News will be at over 23 expositions. We also will attend countless events that support you, the first responder. Fire News is proud that we can attend your events and report on them in our newspaper. On a side note, your department should have a Public Information Officer so that the word gets out about events you are doing to raise funds for various causes such as the Cancer Foundation, the Burn Center and unfortunate families.

When all is said and done, remember that you will be a better first responder when you continue your education in the fire service and become involved with the committees in your department. Attend seminars and become an active department member who strives to be the best of the best. Hear the words that FDNY Lt. Joseph P. DiBernardo once asked, “Are you on the job or are you into the job?” I think many of you are definitely into the job. Fire News will be there to support you and we will continue to do what we have done successfully for over 43 years and that is to honor you with coverage of every aspect of the firerescue and emergency services in our newspaper and on Facebook or Instagram. …Dennis

2 FFs Injured in Cranston

On May 29, 2015, just as Cranston firefighters were about to sit down to lunch, dispatchers began receiving calls for a house fire on Orchard Street. As the doors of Station 2 went up, heavy smoke was seen in the sky from the area.

Deputy Chief Bassett called a working fire from the ramp of the station and, on arrival, heavy fire was showing from the first floor of one house and extending to a second. Extra companies were requested. Numerous lines were stretched and operated in the main fire building, but everywhere crews opened up, they found fire. As conditions deteriorated, the IC ordered everyone out of the building and Ladder 1 put its ladder pipe to work. After the fire was knocked down, crews re-entered and performed extensive overhaul. The damage to the exposure was limited to the vinyl siding. Members of the RI Fire Marshals’ office assisted Cranston’s investigators to determine the cause of the fire. Two firefighters were taken to RIH to be evaluated.

Quick Work in Manchester

Fire broke out in a large mixed occupancy building on Main Street in Manchester (CT) just before noon on May 13, 2015. Companies quickly brought the attic fire under control within about a half hour. The blaze was battled by firefighters from Manchester’s Eighth District, as well as mutual aid from Manchester FireRescue-EMS, East Hartford and Bolton.

2-Alarmer in Abington On May 7, 2015, the Abington Fire Department responded to a house fire on Monroe Street. Abington Engine 3 reported heavy smoke showing from a distance, and arrived to find heavy fire throughout a 2-1/2 story wood framed dwelling. A second alarm was requested, bringing mutual aid from Rockland, Bridgewater, Whitman, Holbrook, Weymouth and Brockton. An East Bridgewater ambulance was on-scene for standby, and the Whitman CERT Rehab unit was also utilized.

Hanson provided station coverage. Crews quickly went to a defensive operation due to the heavy fire conditions. Numerous handlines were stretched, ladder pipes were used, as were Blitz guns. Abington Fire Chief John Nuttall said, “A steady wind blowing into the structure allowed the fire to quickly spread through the entire building. The fire also moved into many void spaces in the roof and floor areas, which required a great deal of firefighting effort to extinguish.� The house was a total loss.

Fairfield Lumber Blaze Shortly after 1900 on June 2, 2015, the Fairfield Fire Department was dispatched to the old Fairfield Lumber site on Thorpe Street for a building fire. First companies on scene found fire in the southernmost warehouse of the 3 buildings. The fire would escalate to a 2nd alarm and involve two more warehouses that made up the complex before being put under control by 2200. Members and apparatus from Bridgeport, Easton, Norwalk, Stratford, and Westport were called in as either manpower at the scene, or station coverage during the blaze. The drone used to take these photos and video was also used by Incident Command to check for hot spots and to see if master streams were being effective.

Fatality at Condo 4-Alarmer On May 5, 2015, the Arlington (MA) Fire Department responded to a fire at the Brookside Condominium Complex. The first-due engine ordered a second alarm as they were approaching the scene. Third and fourth alarms were ordered almost immediately thereafter. The fire was in a fully occupied 36-unit condominium. Firefighters from Belmont, Boston, Cambridge, Medford, Somerville, Waltham, Weston and Winchester assisted. The Incident Commander was Arlington Fire Chief Robert Jefferson. Unfortunately, one occupant perished in the fire, which was caused by smoking material discarded in mulch.

Garage/House Fire in Prospect On April 26, 2015, patrons of the Dunkin Donuts on Old School House Road called to report heavy black smoke coming from the woods behind the shop.

The Prospect (CT) Fire Department was dispatched to investigate and found a well involved garage fire quickly spreading to the residential exposure. With heavy smoke and fire billowing from the residence, companies stretched in lines and mounted an interior attack, quickly knocking down the fire but not before the residence sustained heavy smoke and water damage. Mutual aid came from Cheshire and Bethany for manpower and coverage.

East Providence 2-Alarmer On the morning of May 28, 2015, the East Providence Fire Department received a call reporting a fire on North Broadway. The dispatcher stated that there was a language barrier with the caller and he was trying to get more information. There was nothing showing on arrival, but upon investigation, Engine 5 found a top floor fire in an occupied three-story house. Lines were quickly stretched. While conducting a primary search, Engine 2 found two people on the second floor and assisted them out.

The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes.

Leominster What’s a Garage Totaled Neighbor For?

On April 30, 2015, Leominster firefighters responded to a fire on Jungle Road on the far southeast side of the city line. Engines 2, 4 and 3; Ladder 1; and Rescue 1; were dispatched. Prior to arrival a private ambulance on the Interstate observed a large column of black smoke visible from that area. Firefighters arrived to a large detached garage that was fully involved. Companies had to lay long four-inch lines due to the hydrant locations. The garage had an old truck inside that was being restored. Also inside were propane and acetylene tanks that were blowing off. It took about 45 minutes to bring the blaze under control. The garage and all items were a total loss.

A homeowner who was burning brush sparked a two-alarm fire that destroyed three summer cottages along Pascoag Reservoir on Whispering Pines Drive in Burrillville (RI) on April 20, 2015.

Firefighters were hampered due to the remote access and water supply issues. The fire was contained to the three cottages and the brush in the area.

2-Alarmer in Scotland

On April 14, 2015, the Scotland (CT) Fire Department, along with numerous other mutual aid departments, battled a two-alarm fire on Devotion Road (Route 97). The property had a barn with dogs kenneled inside, but was not affected by the blaze.

Bridgeport Blaze

Bolton Garage Fire

On May 14, 2015, Bridgeport companies arrived to find heavy fire in the rear of the dwelling that rapidly extended throughout the structure. Companies battled the fire for about a half-hour before withdrawing from the house for a defensive attack. Fire vented the roof areas in several places before being knocked down by Ladder 10’s pipe.

Gas Fire in Montville

Recently, crews from Montville and several area departments responded to Ridge Road, for a well involved house fire being fed by cooking gas from exterior 100-pound cylinders. The gas was secured, but not before very heavy damage was done to the residence. Montville FMO was leading the investigation.

Smart Move, Quick Work in Leicester

Leicester firefighters were called to a Stafford Street residence for a reported building fire on May 8, 2015. Upon arrival, companies found an automobile on a trailer, and still connected to a pickup truck, well involved. The owner had managed to get the car out of the garage before firefighters arrived. A tanker from Auburn Fire was called to the scene, as it is a non-hydrant area. Companies checked for extension and completed overhaul.

Spring Street Fire in New Haven On April 16, 2015, newly-promoted Assistant Chief of Operations Matthew Macarelli conducted an on-scene debriefing at a two-alarm fire on Spring Street in New Haven (CT). The fire, which apparently started on a second-floor deck, caused extensive damage to the 2-1/2 story wood frame house in the city’s Hill Section.

All-Companies Blaze in Plymouth Plymouth (MA) firefighters responded to a possible electric fire in a three-story, brick commercial building on the Main Street Extension. The box was filled and, on arrival, a supply line was secured to Engine-1. Tower-1 set up at the front of the building. The first crew in the building found a smoke condition in the area of the CafĂŠ Strega Ristorante. The problem was found to be in an elevator hydraulic motor.

2 FFs Injured in Fall River 4-Alarmer

On May 24, 2015, two firefighters were injured at a four-alarm fire on Seabury Street in Fall River (MA).

Four adults and two children were displaced by the blaze and were assisted by the Red Cross.

Hydrant Woes Don’t Stop Quick Knockdown On April 1, 2015, East Hartford firefighters responded to a fire in a mobile home on Cheyenne Road.

Ladder 2 arrived reporting the mobile home well involved. Members were able to keep the fire from getting into the exposures even though they had water pressure issues from the hydrants in the complex.

Bathroom Fire Held in Worcester On April 14, 2015, Worcester firefighters extinguished a small fire in a bathroom of a mixed-occupancy building on Main Street. The fire originated in a second floor bathroom. Companies stayed on scene for a short time checking for extension.

1 FF, 1 Civ. Injured in Leominster 2-Alarmer

On May 25, 2015, Leominster firefighters got a call for an apartment house fire. Three engines and a ladder were on the initial dispatch. An off-duty firefighter passing by, stated heavy fire and smoke were visible, prompting Deputy Chief Daniel Kirouac to strike the working fire. First-due Engine 4 did a great job stretching two, 2-1/2 inch lines and giving the exterior a quick hit and then stretching into the building. Once the bulk of the fire was knocked down a third line was stretched for overhaul. A second alarm was quickly struck with the possibility of occupants still in the building.

The fire got into the apartments above the second floor as occupants fled, leaving their doors open, allowing the fire a great spread to the top floor. Mutual aid to the fire came from Fitchburg and Sterling. One occupant of the building was transported for smoke inhalation and a firefighter was transported for glass in his eye.

Numerous pets were rescued, though a few perished in the fire.

4-Alarmer in Central Falls

On April 14, 2015, a four-alarm fire tore through a single-story, Lshaped garage at Northeast Contracting on Washington Street in Central Falls (RI). Firefighters deployed big lines to protect the exposures as heavy fire and explosions occurred in the garage.

Security bars on the rollup doors hampered access. Incident command called for a haz-mat team to monitor the smoke being produced. No injuries were reported during the fire but a local middle school was closed for the day becaue of it.

Lancaster Garage Fire

Lancaster (MA), along with Sterling and Clinton firefighters, responded to a garage fire on May 7, 2015. On arrival, heavy fire had consumed a garage from front to back. Firefighters were able to make a quick knock down with extensive overhaul.

Busy Day for Johnston

Johnston (RI) Fire Department companies were tied up extinguishing a 10- to 15-acre wood fire at an old dump site, when calls for a building fire on Granite Street came in on May 5, 2015. Mutual aid companies from Providence, Cranston and Smithfield arrived to find heavy smoke and fire from a 1-1/2 story, wood framed Cape Cod. The fire also sparked a woods fire behind the house.

2 FFs, 1 Civ. Injured at Meriden Blaze

On May 9, 2015, Meriden (CT) firefighters responded to Crown Street for numerous calls reporting a building fire with people trapped and jumping. Due to the volume of calls and large column of smoke seen while responding, Car 3 struck a second alarm before companies arrived. On arrival, members had heavy fire conditions in an apartment building. One civilian was found burned on the ground outside. Two members were also transported to the hospital, one with burns. Many mutual aid departments assisted at the scene and covered.

3-Alarmer in Pawcatuck

On May 27, 2015, the Pawcatuck Fire Department received a box alarm for a River Road address. Dispatch also received a report of a fire on the third floor of a four-story, 200 x 400-foot mill complex. Units arrived to find fire on the third floor with an active sprinkler flow. Crews made the fire floor, to find the fire running the walls and above the sprinkler system. Command requested mutual aid from several CT and RI departments over the next few hours, including a fireboat from Mystic for drafting. Crews worked the outer walls and vented and opened up several layers of roofing to get at the confined fire.

Most of the fire damage was to the roof and outer wall area.

Three Providence Houses Damaged Just before shift change, on the night of May 23, 2015, a still box went out in Providence, reporting a house fire on Clarence Street.

Responding on the initial alarm were Engines 8, 6 and 14, Ladders 2 and 6, Special Hazards and Division 1. On arrival, Engine 8 reported heavy fire showing from two occupied houses and transmitted a second alarm. The fire appeared to start between two houses and Engine 8 immediately stretched a line to the driveway and attempted to knock down some of the heavy fire, but the fire spread to a third building, forcing the IC to call for additional companies. Mutual aid from Cranston and Johnston responded to the fire, while other mutual aid departments covered empty stations. It took approximately 45 minutes to bring the fire under control and no injuries were reported.

East Boston Fire On April 25, 2015, firefighters in East Boston responded to Sumner Street for a fourth-floor kitchen fire in a four-story brick structure. Arson in Hartford 2-Alarm

On April 2, 2015, Hartford companies reported heavy fire showing from a four-story brick, mixed-occupancy structure, located just outside of downtown. What was believed to have been a vacant building for years, turned out not to be; companies were forced to make a ground ladder rescue of a person dangling from a second-story window. A second alarm was transmitted as conditions quickly deteriorated and fire traveled to the floors above and through the roof. Three tower-ladders simultaneously surrounded the building with master streams to penetrate the deep-seated pockets of fire. The fire was deemed incendiary in nature, with an arrest announced later that afternoon.

Duxbury Garage Fire

Duxbury (MA) firefighters responded to a 911 call reporting smoke in a garage. First arriving apparatus found heavy smoke coming from a garage. Entry was made and the fire was extinguished. The cause of the fire was found to be flammable rags thrown into a trash barrel that ignited.

Route 184 Fire On April 29, 2015, numerous departments battled a fire in a large two-bay garage building on New London Road on Route 184 in the Wequetequock District of Stonington.

Torrington Kitchen Fire Recently, a kitchen fire in a three-story residential on Roosevelt Street in Torrington, which extended into the third floor, sent residents of the multi-family dwelling running from their apartments. First-due companies reported fire and heavy smoke showing from the second floor rear on arrival. With this report a second alarm was requested, initiating mutual aid from the Town of Harwinton and Winsted for station coverage. The fire was quickly knocked down but the damage displaced residents for the night. The Red Cross was called to help assist with shelter.

Plainfield Barn/Brush Fire

Historic Newport House Damaged

On April 16, 2015, Plainfield units were dispatched to Spaulding Road for a barn fire. First due found the barn heavily involved with fire spreading though the woods to the north. The blaze started with a lawnmower fire and spread to the barn and into the forest, burning six to eight acres. On April 10, 2015, Newport firefighters responded to Catherine Street for a house fire. On arrival, heavy smoke and fire were showing from an occupied, three-story house. As crews stretched in and began opening up, they found fire traveling in numerous walls and ceilings. A third alarm brought more firefighters to the scene to knock down the fire. All of the building’s occupants had made it out prior to the arrival of the fire department. The fire took approximately 90 minutes to bring under control.

Total Loss in Milford

Cranston House Fire

A two-alarm fire tore through a raised ranch just after midnight on April 5, 2015, on Highland Street in Milford (MA). A family of four and their dog escaped unharmed thanks to being alerted by smoke detectors. The fire department arrived to heavy fire conditions overlapping from the windows on the Alpha/Bravo sides on the basement level. The open stairwell assisted in the fire’s rapid progression to the upper level. A defensive attack was used, as the dwelling’s lightweight construction was severely compromised.

The cause of the fire was determined to be an overheated power strip that powered numerous devices including a space heater.

The house was a total loss.

On the morning of March 21, 2015, both Scituate and Cranston began to receive calls for a house fire on Seven Mile Road, a road which shares a border with both communities. Scituate’s Hope Jackson Fire Company arrived first and reported a working fire on the Cranston side of the street. Cranston companies arrived shortly after Scituate and assumed command. The fire began in the basement of an occupied house and quickly spread through the home. Crews battled the fire on both the basement and first floor, but first floor companies reported that the floor was sagging into the basement and the order was given to evacuate everyone. An exterior attack was begun and knocked down the fire.

A Long Afternoon in Hartford

On April 30, 2015, Hartford firefighters were dispatched to the intersection of Cleveland and Hampton Streets in the city’s North End. While en route the dispatcher reported multiple calls being received. When the district chief arrived he found the rear porches fully involved and transmitted the working fire. Firefighters proceeded to attack the fire from the outside because the building was vacant and boarded up.

4-Alarmer in Fitchburg

On May 1, 2015, firefighters responded to a report of a fire on West Street in the Greek Town part of they city. As apparatus arrived, a heavy volume of fire was racing up the backside of a three-story woodframe building. The first and second floors were vacant. An occupant on the third floor was awakened by the smoke and was able to get out as firefighters arrived. The intensity of the fire had firefighters going defensive on arrival. The fire grew quickly to four alarms due to the exposures and the speed it was moving. Numerous handlines and a ladder pipe were put in action. The back of the home was on a very steep slope making it difficult for firefighters to get to the rear. It took about an hour to bring the fire under control.

Working Fire in Worcester On May 30, 2015, Worcester firefighters responded to Pine Hill Road for a fire in a single-family residence. The fire occurred approximately an hour after a propane company had made some repairs to a hot water heater. Engine 7 arrived to find heavy fire coming out a window. The crew made a great stop as other companies had to travel a good distance to reach the fire.

5-Alarmer in Spencer Spencer firefighters struck five alarms for a fire in an occupied frame in the tight downtown area on May 18, 2015. Firefighters made a great stop. The area is known for its woodframe houses placed extremely close to each other.

Spencer is a call department with a full-time chief. Mutual aid was called in quickly. Police were first to arrive and attempted to remove the remaining occupants of the multi-family apartment building. Everyone was evacuated as a propane tank on the rear porch started venting. There was some extension to an old block construction building that once housed the Spencer Rescue Squad, the town’s EMS provider. The fifth alarm was sounded for relief purposes.

Vacant Waterbury Bldg. Blaze After having a trash fire on the second floor of an Orange St r e e t b u i l d i n g , two nights prior, Waterbury fire fighters responded to the same three-story wood frame structure on May 18, 2015.

Upon arrival, command reported the second and third floors fully involved with the fire through the roof. With the heavy fire load, and the only exposure also vacant, the decision to go defensive was made. As all first-alarm companies were going to work, an additional engine was requested for RIT. Though the building was damaged beyond repair, fire crews were able to hold the fire from spreading to the exposure.

Worcester 2-Alarmer

On May 4, 2015, Worcester Engine 11 was sent out for a report of an outside fire on Burncoat Street. When they arrived the outside fire had extended to a house, traveling up and into it. Eventually, fire was seen venting from the roof of the single-family house, and a second alarm was struck. The house, located on a hill next to Quinsigamond University, proved particularly tricky to fight as the winds were whipping around the top of the hill.

1 Fatality, 1 Close Call in Woonsocket A three-alarm fire claimed the life of a 66-year old, first-floor occupant on May 5, 2015 on Logee Street in Woonsocket (RI). This was the second fire at the residence in two days. This time, firefighters arrived to find heavy fire on the Alpha side on all floors. Exterior lines knocked the fire down enough to allow firefighters to enter, search and attack the three floors of fire. Members found the tenant on the first floor during primary searches and began resuscitation efforts on the sidewalk. He was transported to Landmark ER where he was pronounced. A firefighter on the third floor had to issue a Mayday when he was trapped in an apartment. The apartment door leading to the interior stairwell was blocked by a ceiling collapse. He was safely rescued as the FAST unit deployed. The fire progressed through the balloon framed dwelling up to and through the roof. Ladder pipes were used to knock the fire down before firefighters could reenter to mop up.

2-Alarms in West Hartford West Hartford, Ct had a 2nd alarm on 5/27/15 just after noon.

They arrived at 198 S Quaker Ln. to heavy fire showing from the 2nd floor porch. Mutual aid covered their stations and they were able to make a quick knockdown.

Big 3-Alarmer in Hartford

Several dozen residents were left homeless following a major apartment building fire on the evening of April 16, 2015. Hartford firefighters responded to a Main Street address in the North End for a reported structure fire. First-arriving Ladder 3 found a very large, four-story, brick apartment complex with heavy fire showing from porches on all floors of the D side. A second alarm was immediately transmitted as companies stretched lines and evacuated residents. A handline began darkening down the heavy volume of exterior fire, but not before it had already began running the building’s cockloft. A third alarm was called as fire broke through the roof and traveled. With conditions rapidly deteriorating, all companies were ordered to evacuate. At the height of the blaze, three tower-ladders and several large caliber handlines worked simultaneously from all sides. Ladder 4 positioned themselves in a gravel lot off a parallel street for master stream operations on the C side. Firefighters remained on-scene well into the night hitting pockets of fire in what was one of the city’s biggest blazes in quite some time.

Garbage Truck Burns in Cranston

On March 25, 2015, Cranston firefighters responded to the Waste Management Center on Pontiac Avenue for a truck fire up against the building. On arrival, Engine 4 reported the contents of a garbage truck on fire and that the fire was inside the building. A driver was quickly located and was able to back the truck out of the building and dump its payload on the concrete pad. Two lines were stretched and operated and the fire was extinguished.

Bolton Brush Fire

On May 4, 2015, firefighters responded to a brush fire in Bolton (CT) off French Road.

Forest Fire in Scituate Recently, a multi-alarm woods fire broke out in a remote area along the Scituate Reservoir and Tunk Hill Road in Scituate (RI). Fire companies with brush apparatus were requested from northern Rhode Island and nearby Connecticut. Several thousand feet of forestry line were run through the dense area to extinguish the fire.

The fire was reported to be crowning in the trees 30-feet high at times. All-wheel-drive trucks and ATV units worked for days along with structural engines drafting from the reservoir, wetting down the wooded area.

Leicester Brush Fire May 4, 2015, proved to be a busy day for Leicester firefighters. The hot and humid weather combined with the dry ground conditions and wind were the perfect combination for brush fires. Leicester firefighters were first called to Auburn Street for a brush fire behind some residences. As firefighters were picking up from the Auburn Street fire, they received reports of a brush fire in the Rochdale section on the other end of town. That fire appeared to have a good head start and burned down a shed in its path. Firefighters were able to get water on the shed to stop extension to a nearby house. The fire consumed a lot of acreage before being brought under control.

Egremont Covers Mount Washington Egremont (MA) fire crews responded to a brush fire on East Road in Mount Washington. Mount Washington is a very small town of 130 residents and does not provide its own fire protection. However for many years the Egremont Fire and Rescue has covered their occasional needs. Crews were on scene for about an hour and no injuries were reported.

Marsh Fire in W. Haven

On May 7, 2015, the West Haven Fire Department started receiving multiple calls for a brush fire on nearby Interstate 95. First-in companies found a rapidly advancing marsh fire. The box was filled out bringing additional companies. A second alarm was requested along with a special call for New Haven’s fireboat. The fire rapidly progressed toward the train tracks where it burned overhead cantan-

ery wires causing two large electrical arcs. Train service was halted until the fire could be brought under control. Ironically, the train tracks would serve as a natural firebreak allowing companies and the fireboat to get control of the blaze.

Sandwich (MA) firefighters responded to an MVA on Tupper Road. A vehicle was rear-ended as it exited a bank parking lot. Firefighter/Paramedics evaluated several occupants who were transported to the hospital.

Freak Accident Kills 1 in Worcester

Worcester Ladder 7 was responding to a report of a structure fire, assigned as the RIT, when, while traveling through Kelley Square, were flagged down by passerbys. They noticed a tractor-trailer that appeared to be stuck outside of a bar. Firefighters investigated, and found that the truck had taken down a metal light pole and pinned two people under the rear of the trailer. Rescue 1 responded to the accident, cribbed up the back of the trailer and attempted to use air bags to lift the trailer off the victims. One victim was removed quickly. The Special Operations truck was called to the scene for its vast array of cribbing. A heavy-duty wrecker from a local shop was called in to assist in stabilizing and lifting the trailer. Unfortunately the second victim expired on scene as the trailer was lifted off of her in this very freak accident.

MVA Rollover in Carver Carver (MA) firefighters and EMS responded to Route 44 West at Route 58 for an MVA. On arrival they found a vehicle that had rolled over and two occupants who had been ejected. Two Medflight helicopters were called for traumatic injuries, but one was cancelled and the patient transported by ground to South Shore Hospital. The second patient was transported to the LZ where Medflight took over care of a 24-year-old female with head trauma. The patient was transported to Rhode Island Trauma Center.

Rollover in Whitman Recently, the Whitman Fire Department responded to a twovehicle MVA with a rollover at the intersection of Temple and Bedford Streets. Ambulance-247, Engine-2, Car-3 and Rescue-1 responded. Companies arrived to find one of the vehicles on its side. The lone occupant was reportedly uninjured and was assisted out by firefighters after the vehicle was stabilized with cribbing. The occupants of the other vehicle were also reportedly not injured. Ambulance-247 cleared the scene with three patient refusals. Engine-2 remained on-scene until the vehicle was righted.

On April 9, 2015, firefighters responded to Tamarac Lane and Birch Mountain Road in Glastonbury (CT) for a person trapped under a tractor in the woods. With mutual aid from Bolton Rescue, members used jacks, shoring and a chain/come along to extricate the driver.

Body Recovery in Abington On April 13, 2015, the Abington Fire and Police Departments responded for a report of a body found at the Island Grove Park. Abington Engine-2, Ambulance-4, and the Forest Fire responded, along with the deputy and fire chief. Companies gained access to the scene off of Lake Street, and found a victim they determined to be deceased. The OIC requested Forest Fire respond to the scene with the boat. The boat retrieved the victim.

Rescue in Yantic On March 11, 2015, the Yantic Fire Department, American Ambulance and Norwich Police were requested to a homeless camp about a quarter-mile off the road for a sick occupant. Crews hiked in about two feet of snow to find a solar-powered teepee and a man with a medical issue who was unable to walk. Crews evaluated him, decided to use the Stokes basket as a sled and hauled him down hill to the ambulance.

PCTRT and the National Guard Tech Rescue Training On May 21, 2015 the Plymouth County Technical Rescue Team and the National Guard trained in Bridgewater with low angle rescue equipment. The two organizations set anchor points, hauling, lowering systems, and utilized a Stokes basket for several evolutions that were held at the campus of Bridgewater State University. The teams were tasked with two different evolutions, which required the ‘victim’ to be brought up a slope.

The second evolution had a five-foot drop at the end, adding an additional element of difficulty.

The 2015 Boston Marathon was held on the rainy, windy and raw day of April 20, 2015.

This was its 119th running. Over 32,000 runners left the starting line in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, and ran the 26.2 miles into the City of Boston, ending at the Boylston Street finish line.

In order to keep both runners and spectators safe, a massive public safety effort was put forth along the entire course. Fire, EMS and police departments worked to ensure that the route remained safe.

Boston EMS has a large medical staging area just after the finish line on Boylston Street.

Any sick or injured runners can be quickly brought into the medical tents for treatment, or transported to local hospitals, if needed. EMS and fire crews stand-by near the end of the race, in case anyone needs medical treatment.

Many public safety employees also participate in the Boston Marathon each year. The Boston Fire Department puts together a marathon team of firefighters from the area.

Members of the marathon team raise money for local charities. Boston Police Commissioner William Evans is also a veteran runner of the Boston Marathon.

Obituary

Sharon’s Chief Steven O. Cummings Deputy Fire Chief Steven O. Cummings, age 58, of Westborough and formerly a long time resident of Foxboro and Mansfield passed away unexpectedly on April 17, 2015.

He was the loving husband of Alice (Lowe) Cummings, devoted father of Kevin B. and Stephanie M. Cummings, and was predeceased by his son, Michael A. Cummings.

Born in Norwood, he was the son of the late Berton C. Cummings and Elsie B. Cummings Albro.

Steve’s professional career was dedicated to the fire service. He retired from the Sharon Fire Department in 2012 after 39 years of service. He started his career in 1973 with the Foxborough Fire Department as a Junior Firefighter. On September 17, 1978, Steve was hired as a permanent firefighter for the Sharon Fire Department and promoted to Deputy Fire Chief in 2000. During the course of his career, he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Sciences from Salem State College.

Steve was the beloved brother of Berton C. Cummings (Wendy) of Taunton, Merlyn Cummings (Dottie) of Easton, Alan Cummings

(Patricia) of Foxboro, JoEllen McNamara (Gerald) of Foxboro, Judy Cummings of Foxboro, and Peter Cummings (Eric Allen) of East Providence. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Steve’s greatest joy in life was his family, closely followed by several passions including the collection of fire memorabilia and photography of apparatus. When he took time away from firefighting, he enjoyed traveling and always came back with a good story to share. As a longtime member of the Foxboro cribbage league, he will continue his quest for achieving a 29-hand. Steve will always be remembered for his infectious smile and warm bear hugs.

Steve was waked on April 22 and a funeral service was held on April 23 at the Bethany Congregational Church, in Foxborough.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Steve’s memory may be made to the Last Call Foundation, c/o Boston Firefighters Credit Union, 60 Hallet Street, Boston, MA 02124.

Cooking with my Husband This month’s article is going to be written a little differently than normal. Since I am the one that is always typing up the articles for Firefighter Ray, and this month’s article is about me, we thought it would be interesting to get a take on filming from the guest’s point of view. First, let me introduce myself. I am Lori, Firefighter Ray’s wife. Secondly, let me inform you that the only reason I was a guest on the show was because he had a last minute cancellation and needed to fill the spot. Being the good wife, I agreed to help him out and we filmed our first episode together. This wasn’t the first episode for my family. You have all seen my father, Anthony, on the show every season. You can even catch my mother at the end of my episode.

With all that being said, it was a beautiful day in Bayport when we filmed. Like all shoots go, I was told we would start at 9 a.m. and didn’t begin until 10:30. Preparation, for the meal I was making on the show, began the night before. I was making twice baked, bone-in pork chops and breakfast potatoes (yes, for dinner). Firefighter Ray said he would help me prep the meal the night before, but as any wife knows, this was not happening (and I didn’t really want him in the kitchen, as he has mentioned on previous shows). By the time he arrived home that night, I had everything prepared and cooked what needed to be cooked.

Back to filming. Once we began shooting, Ray turned from my husband to Firefighter Ray. I only hope he doesn’t kiss all his guests!

We began preparation on the pork chops and potatoes. Firefighter Ray was trying to be helpful and cut the potatoes, but I had to take the task away from him We joked around back and forth. He has a great sense of humor, probably one of the reasons I have stayed with him all these years! It definitely wasn’t because of his cleanliness in the kitchen.

After all was cooked and the food was ready, we had another guest join us for the tasting. As I mentioned earlier, my mother came on and gave some stories of her own memories of Ray and I when we were younger.

Of course, when Ray tasted the pork chops, he said they were unbelievable. Best he’s ever had. He’s a smart boy!

Being married to a firefighter is sometimes hard. You never know if they are going to make it home after their shift or if you are going to get “that call.” You do learn to deal with it and not worry so much as time goes on, but it is always in the back of your mind.

I did get such a call, on our anniversary, 11 years ago. Ray had fallen,from a ladder,while venting a second story window. He sustained internal injuries as well as a fractured spinal cord and severe damage to his hips. With all this having happened, I would never tell him he couldn’t be a fireman, because it is what he truly loves doing. He pours all his love of the fire department into this show, as his way of keeping his fire department days alive.

The camaraderie and connections they make, while on the job, enforces his drive to do whatever he can to help others that are injured along the way. This is what Firehouse Kitchen is all about.

BREAKFAST POTATOES (not just for breakfast) 6 medium size Idaho potatoes 1 large onion Salt, pepper, paprika Extra-virgin olive oil Using a large sauce pan, use enough olive oil to cover the bottom of the pan. Put on medium heat. Dice onion and put in once oil is hot. Clean, peel and cut into cubes the potatoes. Once the onion is beginning to brown, add the cubed potatoes. Cover with paprika and season to taste with salt and pepper. Mix all ingredients to ensure seasons are evenly distributed. Cover sauce pan. Check every few minutes and mix to prevent burning of the potatoes. When potatoes are soft (not mushy - when you can easily put your fork into one), they are done. Remove from pan using a straining spoon (to avoid the potatoes from sitting in oil in serving dish). Garnish with parsley and enjoy. Great with any dinner meal and in a morning breakfast omelette.
